Loving this series Colin! Every child in the world has imagined having secret tunnels and bunkers in their house, I know I certainly did when I was younger. Thanks for making my dream something that I can see actually done. One thing you could do to really nail it, you mentioned a lift in the pantry. I'm picturing a SECRET lift, to follow the theme of the series. Like, you pull a fake box of tea bags or a book, like in the movies, and the floor just psssssh's down. Thanks again, I hope you see this.

The fact that you manage to make something that is absolutely devilish with details of planning and consequence so ingestible for a layman is really what I love about this. It's comments like "we need to do this to stop that from happening" that really trivialise how complicated and hard it is to do what you're doing. The last episode with the foundations of the house etc, just the diagram you drew made it look so elementary in nature that even a layman could just say "Oh yeh of course", but the reality is that you had to realllyyyyy graft and put in the hours to make sure every part of planning is done and covered - and even allowed (from a council perspective). You hide all of those boring parts and break them down into easily ingestible parts and for that, I thank you :)

I’d love to know the practical elements from this build:
-Did you have to get city approval?
-How much would this cost? (The material cost seems insane)
-How much did this increase the value of your house?
Based on the amount of steel he's using and how much the value of steel has gone up, this is a ludicrously expensive project. Because he is an incredibly successful youtuber, he is basically one of the few who are capable of even considering this project, not even including the skills and engineering knowledge/connections to make this project get off the ground.

It's worth as much as someone is willing to pay, and since it's not on the market, nobody knows.
Other comments have summarized the approvals and permits Colin went through.
2m x 1m x 2mm cold rolled steel sheets are about £100, and you'd need about 4 of them per 1m section of tunnel. At a *very* rough guess, it looks like about 1.5 - 2 cubic yards of concrete per 1m section, which would cost of around £125 delivered. Electrical, plywood, taxes, other odds and ends, would push the total up to at least £575/m in my quick estimation, assuming Colin and friends do all the work.
As for increasing the value of his house, I wouldn't take that as a given, at least not for the appraisal price. Builds like this can be a liability. It seems to be built well, but even so, not everybody wants a tunnel or a bunker, and there would be required insurance and maintenance (or risk causing problems above ground or in the house). But, hey, it's fun as hell, and *I'd* love a house with a tunnel, so I guess if you find the right buyer, who knows.

IDEA TO REPLACE THE PANTRY : A lift would be awesome, especially if it still looks like a pantry.
You could push one on the tiles to activate the lift and then the whole room goes downstairs ! After that, the wall on the right would unlock and open. You just have to push it like a door to enter the tunnel :) it's much cooler than a simple lift and acts like a secret passage
Every "secert" tunnel needs a "secret" entrance. Like the standard head bust with a button on it. Or bookshelf with book lever. Maybe pantry has that too. Twist a bottle and the door opens.
Yes! Maybe there's a possibility of a collaboration with James Bruton and a 3D scanner to print out a bust.

@@jonniiinferno9098 Probably not as bad as you think. Cost drops when you buy in bulk or have hookups. Time to completion drops with experience as well. I remember taking apart my car interior.... first time took me easily 8 hours. Subsequent times took me less than 1 hour. If I had to guess, this tunnel probably took ~3 months and around 100k but it really comes down to how much he is working (8 hour days vs 12 hour days).

The cost will have been far higher in my estimates.
But sponsors will have covered much of the cost, I'm sure. No doubt some of the tooling/equipment was covered by sponsors of previous jobs too.
So in truth, it all comes down to how you break down what the "cost" was.

Full send option- line the walls with shelves so as to disguise it as a regular pantry and retain the pantry's functionality, but the floor is a secret elevator that can slowly descend or ascend up and down the shaft at the pull of a concealed lever disguised as a food item. That would undoubtedly be the coolest option. Like a batcave entrance. IMO.
Have the down downstairs sign light up and it will reveal the opening to the tunnel.
Maybe he could get an old British telephone booth and build a floor like that for the front of the house haha

When I was younger my mum had a basement added to the house, no issues at all getting planning.
Hey Colin, my suggestion is to finish the cut board so it look like a finished pantry. But, when you step in and close the door, the floor hydraulically lowers into your tunnel. A secret entrance of the sort. Plus it would be great for groceries when you get the front tunnel completed. You could trigger the floor by tugging on the Colin Furze spice on your spice rack or something like that. Great channel, keep up the awesome work.

If I'm reading the illustration correctly.. It looks like the section that is complete is the short section. So that means you have a ton of work left to do for connecting the bunker! I don't envy the work! But I can't wait to see the result!

For your Q&A: How are you disposing of all the rubble? Your neighbors have to be pretty used to your shenanigans by now, but it would be fun to hear their take on your new tunnel. What part(s) of the process have been the most difficult? Come across anything interesting in the digging process? Artifacts?

@@matoatlantis Colin grew up after having kids of his own. No more clearing snow off the front yard with a pulsejet. His courtesy towards neighbours is sold as this tunnel being a secret project and thus not wanting to make a noise while neighbours are at home.
He puts a bit in his trousers, then goes for a stroll. The entire neighbourhood is a few centimeters higher elevation now.

When I helped my mate Pete build the tunnel from the base of his tower (Tower has a five storey periscope inside it*) to the underground dry dock we made sure the tunnel was curved so you couldn't see how long it was :)
I wish I could share pictures of it.
*The periscope made a support for the winched platform and a great datum as the tower was built.

That's the kind of down to earth, practical, common sense advice we watch these videos for.
Maybe this will pioneer a new way to think about house design? I must admit that I already considered building secret passageways into my house (build from scratch) and some of the ideas I get from watching this are a lot easier when you can do it as you build the house in the first place :D

It's got to be an absolute insane amount of money. That steel alone costs a fortune. I don't know if he's using a weathering steel like COR-TEN, but I would hope so, especially as moisture rich as the UK is. But that would be an incredible amount of money.

Speaking of current events: Make the hatch able to be hydraulically assisted in opening. Even a bottle jack would work. Or you could adapt the mechanism from a floor jack. If there are several hundred pounds of debris laying on top of the hatch from a building collapse, you’ll need something like that to get it open.

@@zTribalstylerz there will be pockets and cavities you don't have to lift all the debris but an assistance device would lift more than you could on a ladder that maybe a nice addition and another video idea
The mower shed might be the best bet in that case, lightest building of the three.
And cathodic protection so all that steel doesn't rust away before you need to use it
or you could just go through one of the many other hatches...
I would add:
- a fireman pole
- fake window inside the tunnel so u can see the rocks (might look cool with some led lights)
- One entrance that looks like The Hatch from the show LOST (or u know, replica of on of the rooms from inside the hatch)
A fake window wouldn't be very functional, the entire tunnel is lined with concrete.

Two things I love, is youtubers who are super passionate and who puts in a lot of effort for just an ad, most ads I skip cause the classic stand infront of a camera. Love the shark and love the engineering behind every part of this project.

Colin, do you plan on getting a house appraiser to re-appraise your house after its complete? Im super curious how much value this would increase your house by. I also really want to see the appraiser's face as they explore it all.
In a previous video he mentioned that there's basically no way he could ever sell the house because of codes and regulations and things
@@Jmross808 no quite true, he stated that the bunker would have to be sold with a house instead of a house with a bunker. So basically the bunker would be listed first.
In some earlier Video, he mentioned that if he wanted to sell it, it would be better advertised as a Bunker with an attached house. Not the other way round

Question, how are you planning on, keeping the steel from rusting out over time? I see some of the steel, being in direct contact with the soil.
Quite a bit late in seeing this, but have to say hats off to you for this unique project! it reminds me of Wallace and Gromit's house from the films with all the contraptions, saying that I'm sure you would easily create a pond that doubles as a driveway when flipped over.

Will you be installing any Smoke or carbon monoxide alarms in the tunnel? Now that it has gotten extensive, and you will be working inside the tunnel extensively in the future, it would be nice to have a monitoring system to keep you safe until your completion, or even from now on?

Idea for your hatch: Fireman's pole with an automated foot-plate that you can stand on to go up or down. You don't need to use it on the way down, but would make it awesome to get back up AND have the benefit of sliding down the pole!

You should definitely put one of those water slide drop tubes in that room and a pool at the bottom so when you get in the tubes it counts down then you drop into you bunker swimming pool 🥳

I've seen many many ads, so I like to consider myself an ad expert. I can say that, without a doubt, this Surfshark ad was the best one I've ever seen.
I love that logo in the intro, good job whoever designed that!
Speaking of current events; Install a landline. Regardless of what happens, if you're stuck down there due to a cave in, exit blockage from a storm, or even if a criminal forces you to hide down there, you'll need a means to call for help. Cell phones are not reliable when their batteries go dead, or if you don't have it with you.
So, I say install a landline and set it up at the mid point. As you grow the tunnel, extend the line for another emergency phone. I also suggest adding a bell pull system to the outside of the garage and in the house. That way you can pull either to alert those nearby that you need help or they for your help. Because calling on a phone can waste time.

The land line needs to connect directly to the line with no batteries in the phone.
This is a very sensible, and practical idea... And I approve wholly. In keeping with the Furzesque nature of the channel however, I feel like an SOS button that triggers an air-raid siren, fireworks, and calls Optimus Prime would be keeping in theme. Maybe.
He'll have 4 different exits by the time he's done, if he can move enough to reach a phone he can probably get out too.
@@raymondhayes3299 , I wonder how many people today realize that old timey phones didn't need any electricity, except from the line and that one could make a phone call purely off the power coming from the phone line itself.
Build in a lift that has all the kitchen necessities built into its wall, so that it just looks like a cupboard. That way, all the equipment you'll need for tea and toast goes to the bunker with you.

It would also be nice if it had the option to be manually operated (maybe retrofitting an hand crank winch) or, either, wouldn't require external power at all to go down (obiously at the apropriate speed).
That way it could still be used in an emergency even if there's a power outage or the main driving system fails.

Yes! A lift made from metal beams making a cage, with rails and maybe a pulley system of some kind that he can operate with a crank, alongside an electric version if he doesn't want to crank himself up and down. Only issue is that there's no space for it.

Two suggestions: 1/ A geological window, just a strip from top to bottom (or all the way around) where you still can see the the clay and limestone layers, would be interesting to see where you come from, possibly polished or with some nice lights. Second suggestion: Please tell us a little bit about the permitting procedure or whether you got a structural engineer, or are you really allowed to do whatever you want? Really curious about that, and I think many others as well.

1) How have you accomidated for ventalation throughout the entire tunnel? Do you have something to move the air around or filter from the outside?
2) Have you thought about an emergency notification system to people outside of the tunnel that someone is down there? Example: What you or someone else got hurt in the tunnel but could not physically climb out, maybe they have no cellphone and cannot physically move to the bunker?
3) Have you textured the ladders in any way to help prevent accidents suchs as materials drop on the steps? Example: Any oil or loose rock that some how falls on the ladders could cause dangerous accident.
4) Have you considered possible drainage incase there was a leak into the tunnel? Example: In the unlucky chance, say the water pipes in the kitchen burst and water floods into the tunnel. Would all of the electrical be safe and would the water have directed areas to drain or be pumped out?
5) Is there an consideration on additional storage in the house or underground now that a the pantry has less storage space?

These are the type of questions a health and safety manager would overract with, If you watch all videos closely you can see fans and the core ventilation holes Colin has drilled throughout the project. This project is not finished yet, and Colin will find a way with the ventilation no doubt. Question 5 isn't necessary, some newly built housed don't even have pantrys. Everything else is just common sense...
If this were my tunnel project, #4 would be my top concern, but I have a phobia about drowning that is somewhere below my phobias about heights and slugs.
The whole complex is very cool. I remember when you built the bunker. My thought then was "what about rust protection?" It's a legitimate concern. I wonder how much rust has accumulated on the exterior of the bunker?

IDEA: You should live streak digging the tunnel just mount a camera onto the roof of the tunnel so that it doesn't get in the way and BANG you can livestream. i am sure a lot of us would like to see you build the tunnel in real time and see how close you are to completing it. i know i sure would. Also definitely put in a firefighters pole that would make it so much quicker and easier to get down and be much more fun. Love the vids keep up the good work and happy tea making

Speedy phase 2 Fix!
1. Dig tunnel to bunker from above ground with back hoe.
2. Prefabricate steel tunnel sections above ground and lower into trench then stitch together.
3. Back pour concrete and top off with soil.
Honestly, I'd have added more storage cubbies along the side of the tunnel. Multi-use the space. Maybe have a hidden safe for your valuables or the like.

For the entrance to the tunnel in the house, have you thought about having a batcave style entrance with a switch that moves a bookcase? Or maybe a slide or chair that takes you down like in thunderbirds? Definitely make the entrance concealed in the house to go with the feel of the whole project. Great work so far though.

If you're thinking of replacing the trap door as part of a future project, may I suggest the secret entrance to the bat cave. This would be a combination of a fireman's pole to get down, some form of motorised or hydraulic platform to bring you back up, and to top it all off a secret opening pantry shelf that opens when you tip the cookie jar.

His whole tunnel system is inside the border of his house fence, if im not mistaken, he has a 5-6ft brick wall with a gate on it. if you mean, if someone breaks in and the door is locked, then his shop door would also probably be locked.

Yes! Underground garage with hydraulic lift for the car - can't wait to see that one finished! These tunnels look like the inside of a submarine - captain Nemo would like that. I hope no problems with condensation and moisture will arise in the future.

I've got a question for your Q&A video: Are there any regulations considering digging tunnels under your garden or house in the UK? Do you need permission from your local government and if yes, what paperwork is needed?
He got permission. I'm sure you can find the paperwork pretty fast.
I suspect you'd probably just need planning permission from the council and an evaluation by a civil engineer to ensure the house doesnt collapse once you start digging. His property, and it's not visible from above ground, so I doubt there would be too many issues.

He made sure that everything is above board, because someone will report him just for the sole purpose of causing trouble or to ruin projects. Probably because a perceived slight or jealousy. Ive seen it happen with other you tubers particularly off gridders to local authorities and pilots to FAA or national aviation regulators for perceived violations for those reasons.
Looking at the planning permission docs, Colin actually only applied for planning permission for the bunker after the work had started, csnt find any planning applications for thesr new tunnels as I imagine it falls under permitted development

..amazin Colin, brilliant. Best part by far was the Colin Furze branded jars and boxes of tea in the pantry, so funny and done just right, not too serious, fair dues mate, fantastic work!
A few suggestions for your bunker/ tunnel system.
1. A air scrubber system (for worst case real-world scenarios)
2. Automatted closing and locking doors like a panic room. Pneumatically/hydraulically powered of course.
3. A parrascope or visual aid other than camera system to see the outside world.
4. Surveillance/security system to monitor your Fort.
5. To fix the window issue install flat screens on the walls that replicate the outside world or better yet that are hooked to cameras that show the outside world.
6. Radio system and other communications system. I know this project was for fun but if you have it available why not be ready just in case.
7. A back up heat source other than your boiler system.
at that point, he should just dig a bunker UNDER his current bunker for a panic room.
edit: and definitely hydraulic instead of pneumatic. fluid does not compress, air does. A pneumatic door could be forced open.
I’m addition to a lift you could install a mobility aid for anyone who you want to show off this tunnel system to that may not be as mobile as you (disability, age, whathaveyou).
I’d definitely get some cages to secure around the lights in case you bring anything large down their that might accidentally smash into them. The lights could also be computer controlled so you have not only an emergency lighting system along the floor but also coloured lighting for the ceiling (because why not).

Make a fireman's Pole but with an optional lift base!! You slide down and when you want to go up a square or circle shape section of the floor around the pole lifts you to ground level
