I know there is a lot of planning off-camera, but watching you just go at it and build like mad is real inspiring. I like that "just go and build" mentality.
An important point about building a shed in a country with as much rain as England (where I live). Make provision for a gutter along the sides as otherwise the walls will rot quickly at the bottom where all the water runs off the roof. The polythene backing to the feather edge boards will speed up that process of rotting as the boards will not dry out readily. If you use polythene then you should nail the feather edge to vertical battens to create an air gap. This cost very little extra.
There are so many issues with the way he did this, I think it best to just advise people to research elsewhere. They literally threw money away and wasted time (lead tucked underneath the slate? Plastic sheet against wood? No air gap? The whole weight of a slate and lead roof on a single timber over a wide door cavity? Huge gaps around expensive insulaton?). This is considered entertainment for some people, but please don't think it is good building advice - I'd hate to see people with less resources waste them.
"It's raining but it's England. So let's get on with it" My French friends when planning a day will say "what do we do if it rains?" I invariably reply "We get wet, so what ? Are you made of sugar?"
Fascinating English construction style. Here in the US, we'd use galvanized steel or aluminum sheet metal for the drip edge and roof top flashing. Lead is certainly an interesting product to use. We would also have put the drip edge under the layer of water-proof membrane on the roof so water would drip over and off, but anyway, very cool project! I love how you built the really solid and insulated door!
It is the traditional method...as in, we haven't used these techniques widely in the US since the late 1940's. They are still used occasionally for remodeling and refurb of historical structures. Even very fancy homes would use soldered copper flashings, not lead. In the US you'd have to special order the lead and you'd be lucky to find a historical building specialist who'd know how to do this work. This is really keeping the older trades alive. Great shed!
This was the inspiration for the large and very solid shed I built this summer. I used treated 4x2s for the frame and went for a polycarbonate roof so there's plenty of light inside. I then installed a large Lister generator which powers the adjoining garage and probably, in time, the house. The shed floor is 6" thick reinforced concrete to cope with the weight of the generator and insulation in the walls reduces the noise.
I’m building a shed/workshop using polycarbonate roof as well only problem is condensation on underside however I’m still building & their gaps not finished yet I’m hoping condensation goes away after I finish, putting polystyrene insulation in walls if any one has any suggestions to this issue please advise, maybe time of year & plus side it’s not dripping!

The bottom wooden rule in the walls has probably rotted now. Normally you put a rubber strip underneath, alternatively, roofing paper between the wooden bars and in your case, the bricks. If you have them in pressure-impregnated wood, it will last even longer
Of course, the downside to watching this video is lots of shed building videos being recommended to me in the next few months and years... still, i found this interesting and entertaining, nice one furziepops!
Must be nice to know you could always fall back to doing DIY videos and take over the industry (no offense intended I know you can and are doing much more). Seriously, this is one of the best shed building videos I've ever seen. This is textbook content updated for a modern audience rather than the current offerings that resemble a TV show shoehorned into a digital platform, IMO. Really well done. Great use of the medium to your advantage which, I think, is the key reason your ceiling is so high. Thanks for providing such great content.
@2:13 Am I the only one who thinks the weight of the roof (beam) is not spread out enough? I would have put a nice header there above the door and some thicker door frames to transfer the roof weight down to the floor. Similar for the other side of course. So putting stone and lead on the roof does not add up to a "really SOLID" shed in my book. But I'm sure it will hold.
Yes, he should have put a header over the door and doubled up on the posts framing the doorway. Doorways and windows always require headers and extra frame posts. He should also have put the ridge beam support directly under it. As it is, the entire weight of the roof rests on a few screws. He didn't even use any metal brackets. The lumber for the sills should have been treated against rot as well. Raising them up on a single row of bricks isn't enough. You can tell from the color that he used untreated lumber throughout. All that said, he's probably right that what he built is sturdier than one of those cheap metal garden sheds that you can buy at most home improvement centers.
+Marc Jacobi - You're right, he should have a header across the door, supported by jack studs. Placing a point load directly on a single 2 x 4 (on the flat) is asking for sagging and shows a general lack of knowledge of framing. This is not his only mistake. I was chuckling and shaking my head at his framing methods the entire video. But, at the end of the day, It's just a shed to hide the entrance to his sex dungeon, so a good laugh can be had about it. I would be very concerned if someone was attempting to frame a house in this fashion.
When you screw ply to a stud partition in this way you make a 'structural wall' with enormous strength. You could park a jumbo jet on top of this thing......
That shed will last a long time even in England with its wet climate compared to California where I live. Our sheds aren't even close to the quality that shed has especially its roof. I built one on the rainy side of the big Island of Hawaii, and used all marine studs, and plywood, but only used inexpensive corrugated metal roofing. That roofing material wood have made it look way better.
You can buy cheap and nasty sheds in the UK too. Always a false economy though in my view. There's no substitute for proper construction. Always better to build it yourself, if nothing else for peace of mind that it is actually sturdy and all the wood has been treated properly.
all I can say is I wish I actually watched you back in 2016 but only just now heard of you this past week and so far have gone thru like a hundred videos their addicting
That's what I would figure, but the seam between the slate and the lead would allow water to seep in. Here in the US we run the shingles, slats, slate, etc. to run off the edge and put in a drip line to keep the water from coming back towards the structure.
not needed its a triangle ...to make it sag above the door it will have to push the walls out and to do that it will have to stretch the wood above the door ...you cannot stretch it and make it sag at the same time
In the uk, and would do it your way as well, also never seen screws holding down slate :/ I guess colin is a plumber by trade so i wouldn't expect him to be too familiar with roofing.
So everytime you want fish and chips you have to dart from Riverside to Model just to get the perfect blend? I wonder what one of your vehicles'd be the fastest at getting it.
Your electronics are always listening to you. As an experiment, use an unusual word or phrase many times in a short period of time (e.g. "speed boat", "licorice", " wheelbarrow", "rubber boots", etc.) and see how long it takes ads to pop up for you.
I'm pretty sure he could Just make a video saying "i'm moving house do any of you 3 and ah half million people want a house with a bunker?" and sell it easy xD
How strange, Colin furze building something practical that can actually be helpful for a lot of people, instead of something ridiculous and spectacular.

I ask because I am a sheet metal worker, and I typically do very large buildings, but have never seen lead used on any building for many years. in th United States. We use galvanized steel for cheaper buildings, stainless, copper, and zinc. The idea of lead is nice because you can easily form it on site, but it doesn't look as nice.

I would have wagered he burn down the shed sooner than the boards rot.
Don't question the master
+colinfurze you should make a survival kit video
Did you just set it on top, or do you have some wood foundation underground? it seems like you just plopped it on top, and a hard knock might jostle it out of place.
rewatching this for when i get a garden. Still amazing 👏
GREAT JO AND BUILD COLIN!! i LIKED THAT YOU DID NOT USE A SAWZALL. USING A HAND SAW WILL BE A LOST ART...
ALSO BUILDS MUSCLES SAWING,! LOOKS LIKE AMHAGONY WOOD SIDING, WITCH SHOULD LAST A LONG TIME, WHEN PROPERLY SEALED. I WAS A CARPENTER WHO FRAMED HOUSE FOR 30+ YEARS.
4 BUILDER ALL OVER THE USA. BUILT MANY TYPES OF SHEDS.
* DICEDED TOO BUILD MY OWN A FEW YEARS BACK.. I WENT WITH 2X4S T+G PINE INSIDE, STEEL SIDING, EVEN CARPET!
ANY AND ALL SHEDS, HELP DE CLUTTER YOU HOUSE OR BASEMENT ETC.. NICE!!!!
Watched this a million times. Building my own shed soon and this is great inspiration. Nice one Colin 👍🏻
Have to agree, I'll be following the steps on this build, beats B&Who
A million???
@@thomaswykes3647 well, maybe not a million but a lot. That comment was also 2 years ago and the shed is now built 😊
Lovely! Now you can start growing weeds in the bunker! :)
The bottom wooden rule in the walls has probably rotted now.
Normally you put a rubber strip underneath, alternatively, roofing paper between the wooden bars and in your case, the bricks.
If you have them in pressure-impregnated wood, it will last even longer
Agreed, that's probably the only bit where the wood should have been tanalised.
just put DPC membrane on the engineering bricks before you put down your wood and you'll be fine.
@Hello Ronnie Larsson, How are you doing?
Best video on TH-cam...period!
Of course, the downside to watching this video is lots of shed building videos being recommended to me in the next few months and years... still, i found this interesting and entertaining, nice one furziepops!
A guy in a tie is the perfect look for a construction worker.
Anyone else like how humble Conor is
Jay Cartwright who the fuck is Conor?
Brilliant job love the added slate on the roof that should really be a stranded on all sheds
5:22 This kid has an amazing childhood for sure
Must be nice to know you could always fall back to doing DIY videos and take over the industry (no offense intended I know you can and are doing much more). Seriously, this is one of the best shed building videos I've ever seen. This is textbook content updated for a modern audience rather than the current offerings that resemble a TV show shoehorned into a digital platform, IMO. Really well done. Great use of the medium to your advantage which, I think, is the key reason your ceiling is so high. Thanks for providing such great content.
i noticed that behind your house there is a field, and its always windy on your videos, why dont you build wind generator?
Because, as you said, it's already windy.
You could ask him about a wind _turbine_, though.
rip
lol!
he probably doesn't own the land back there?
+Jack Sainthill Holy shit that was perfect.
Colin, i wish i has a friend like you. I love your videos man !
I'm sure 2:53 spreads the weight of the roof enough to stand on top of it
Yes, he should have put a header over the door and doubled up on the posts framing the doorway.
YESS!!!!
I have no desire to build a shed but I'm watching this anyway!
Who's the guy that's always helping out Colin?
His mentor from plumber days
+mihkelhint luigi
Rick. He's also pretty insane.
I’m getting as much great information from the comments as the video itself. Thank you Colin and everyone else! 🙏🙏🙏
When I saw “SOLID shed” thought he was gonna reinforce it with metal or something like that. Still a great video though.
Solid, meaning structural integrity.
Or that he'd fill it to the brim with concrete after building it, to make it truly 'solid'.
The gf/wives living next door must be like 'Look Jeremy fuckin Colin is building a nuclear fallout shelter and you can't even do the washin'
ahahahahaha 😂😂😂 fuck me XD
Bravo!
True Story! 😁
that's because washin is women's work. now go make me a sandwich
a
all I can say is I wish I actually watched you back in 2016 but only just now heard of you this past week and so far have gone thru like a hundred videos their addicting
It's interesting, we build roofs quite differently here in the US. But that shed though, wow, it's beautiful.
His ridge beam is held up by tooth picks. No header above the door to spread to the load.
thats because our roofs have to with stand 10 tonnes of rain
Hint: Always wear a tie when using a chop saw. The outcomes can be so amusing. But GREAT shed!
This is the first project in which you do not blow up, or potentially blow up, anything.
Hey! For All We Know, He Rigged It To Blow With A Press Of A Button!
Aren't bunkers to protect you from, blowing up?
Your friend
I did that a few times growing up, but myself have no explanation.
man after haveing to fix other peoples mess it was good to see you bulled this thing right to make it last as long as possible.
Great attention to detail however, I wouldn't expect anything less from a builder wearing a shirt and tie!...seriously, good job man:)
What's your favourite chip shop in Stamford Mr Colin Furze?
riverside for fish ,model for chips
So everytime you want fish and chips you have to dart from Riverside to Model just to get the perfect blend?
I wonder what one of your vehicles'd be the fastest at getting it.
colinfurze Cheers fam, will check them out.
I was talking to the wife about a new plan to build a new shed. Never mentioned it, or googled it before and this pops up on my recommendations
Your electronics are always listening to you. As an experiment, use an unusual word or phrase many times in a short period of time (e.g. "speed boat", "licorice", " wheelbarrow", "rubber boots", etc.) and see how long it takes ads to pop up for you.
Dennis Davis I know mate thanks for sharing and am aware of the SkyNet. Just never want to believe in it I guess and I’m denial 🤷♂️🤣
Dennis Davis ps I will try the “Speed B” sample and let you know
Must be a very good friend, he is helping you with all your projects ;)
@Hello maxhouseman, How are you doing?
The way you speak about it is well shed
7:51 i was thinking, whats he doing with that old school exhaust silencer on the shed roof?! 😆
Putting a shed up while wearing a shirt and tie.. legend!
Everyone appreciates a decent Garden Shed and this one is Proper!!!
What if your mum and dad or you wanna sell the house "yeah 4 bed and a underground bunker"
haha i don't live with my parents but nice thought
sure hope you own the place lol!
I've always wondered what the neighbours think of your antics...
Are you going to build an air filter for the bunker?
I'm pretty sure he could Just make a video saying "i'm moving house do any of you 3 and ah half million people want a house with a bunker?" and sell it easy xD
why would he want to sell it if he owns it? plus he has a bunker.
He needs to work with Guy Martin. they would be the ultimate combo
That would be insane
I wonder what mad contraption they would come up with?
How strange, Colin furze building something practical that can actually be helpful for a lot of people, instead of something ridiculous and spectacular.
Its not exactly secret when million of people know about it.
I don't know what you're talking about, all his builds are useful. A pulse jet has numerous household applications.
+JacksonNomad Yea, I can think of a ton of uses for a firework rocket launcher
Best shwd i've seen built to date. Slate roof is a killer. Anyone seen nicer shed plese show me. Good work lad! Cheers from Poland
Neighbor diary day no.16,341:
For once he is building something normal... wait... is hat a slate roof!?
Yanuchi Uchiha: Anime, Games and Ramdomness lmao
Ha finally a good comment that’s not self promoting or a quote,
Good job mate 👍
I only wonder why he didn't put solar panels on it!
interesting points ,if anyone else trying to find out backyard storage sheds plans try *WoodBlueprints. Com* Ive heard some decent things about it and my colleague got cool success with it.
is lead typically used for roof flashing in England?
yep
Aluminium, that's all we ever use over here
Yeah n a bout £200 worth - This shed cost a lot more !!
Copper? Lead is much cheaper then that. Then again, in the UK they got plenty of lead.
When his child goes to school and his teacher tells him to be safe with scizzor 😂😂
The earlier they use tools, the earlier they learn to use them safely.
I enjoyed seeing the finished shed it looks real quality. You made it look too easy, great job.
