      Depends on what you call fun. When I used to play complex strategy games friends would tease me about playing excel simulators. Then there's DCS. Where you can turn on an airplane by yourself. Realistically, flipping like 200 controls in order.
      Still the way Mac describes this, this is not the fun kind of boring.

      Well, those 400-800p manuals do have some pictures in them, everybody likes pictures! :p
      Anyhoo, if you could actually identify eg poisonous plants by sight orso ... an actual skill which could be used in a second playthrough (or even in reallife, like learning to fly an aircraft, or develop tactics), learning in games would be fun....
      But from what I see, this is a typical Ubisoft game, do something 20x ... level up -> new skill unlocked

      I guess it’s because they take a lot of time to make so they feel like they have to make you watch them because it took them a long time? I don’t mind cutscenes in a story driven game but some games have way too many and they go way to long. I do prefer games with no cutscenes but if they done right they can be a good part of the game

    Honestly I'm loving the game. I'm way into survival/exploration games and the progression system is very rewarding. It's definitely not a game for everyone, but if you want a game where you're going to take your time and survive and just kind of enjoy the little things (swinging through the trees, saving other apes, leading predators into other predators so they get dragged into the water by a crocodile after eating your baby, etc). I'm having a great time with it just taking it easy. Not really going into it with the mindset of reaching end game, but of playing a really fun and engaging survival game.
    Also if you mate multiple hominids and then give birth, all of the pregnant lady apes will give birth, cutting the cut scenes in half.

    Your clan should ALL gain (and keep) the knowledge that you learn. The idea that you need "x" offspring to keep "y" knowledge and for the rest that you don't have enough offspring for you have to relearn thatseems rather stupid in terms of a design choice.
    So as long as you keep a SINGLE ape alive from your clan and you start a new family you should retain all the knowledge you've learned as you progressed, why on earth is it not like that? that would seem rather straightforward how to do it and not be annoying or anything.

    • @CommDante
      @CommDante 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So, there isn't much punishment for dying? Mario style, lose a life? Just get some more babies?
      Current system would be fine for hard mode or game+ orso, but yeah ... most people wanna enjoy a game, not have a second job. They could've let every offspring being unable to learn certain abilities, but different ones. So, next offspring could learn from another previous offspring who DID learn, etc etc...so, you would loose some skills depending which offspring you choose to play as. This also makes the game more strategic, and could actually mean ape A is used for gathering, B for hunting etc
      More like that old evolution game...would probably have been a lot more interesting, also opens up coop mp...

    • @gyloir
      @gyloir 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@CommDante The punishment for losing knowledge imo should only come into play if you lose "everyone" in your clan, not if you lose "x" person while still having others to carry on.
      I mean does it make sense, if you discover "fire" would you not pass that knowledge to the others within your group? So if one person dies the group doesn't suddenly forget it.
      Then when the next-generation of offspring are born that is just general knowledge that's passed down to them (so they know it without you having to re-do it all).

    • @TheReZisTLust
      @TheReZisTLust ปีที่แล้ว

      Locking in the knowledge by kids is basically the kids being taught that specific skill and happening to remember it. If you don't have kids taught this and that to pass down the knowledge it's gonna go

      im 4 years late to this but the skill keeping really isnt a big deal usually you cant even get enough neurons in a generation to use all your locks and if you got to many you can find meteorites on the map which double the locks for all babies that visited it meaning you can get 12 locks out of them also grinding those points back if you did lose them isnt as bad as it sounds there are many things you can do to instantly get all of them back by either examining dead apes or concuring your fear and if you do somehow lose your whole clan except 1 you can find and recruite outsiders which means you can get new babies to

    Love the concept, always wanted this exact kind of game - shame it hasn't been executed right. This seems more like the player is passively observing evolution rather than playing a role in it. It's not fun when success or failure is totally dependent on unlocked skills/perks. I get that they wanted to be faithful to the idea that evolutionary developments makes later generations more successful/intelligent, but in terms of gameplay it strips agency from the player and hands it over to the progression system - so in effect the player is just watching the game play itself. Boo

    I brought the game two days after your review and I've got to say i am one of those weirdos that is enjoying the game..., Definitely a steep learning curve but I refuse to look up how to do things (I think that is part of the charm how it doesn't really hold your hand) I had to start a new clan about 3hrs in which is frustrating but it didn't take long to get back to where I was second time around.
    With the ancestry point for the next generation, I get upto six to play around with not sure why you where getting only two (it kind of makes sense to me generations do lose skills over time). Now I agree 100% with climbing through the trees this is the most unenjoyable part but that again takes time to master (which I am no where close of mastering pretty much only go up if need be). All in all I am happy with my purchase.

    • @sticks7857
      @sticks7857 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm in the same boat and I don't think we're the weirdos in the same way mack isn't a weirdo for liking all those formula 1 racing games. If I were to review one of those I would say its boring and I stopped playing it after 2 hours like mack did in this review of ancestors because I find seeing who can drive around in circles the fastest to be a huge snorefest but that doesn't make the game inherently bad and thats why I think this review does a huge disservice to ancestors and drives off people from playing it that might really like it.
      Its a really fun game and even though I had to restart after playing for hours like you did because I accidentally left my clan behind starting a new settlement and they all died when I went to the next generation I didn't mind doing it at all because the core gameplay loop is fun and unique and having to do more if it is hardly a punishment.
      As for the climbing through the trees bit I think its safe to say I've mastered it and it is really enjoyable once you do and I use it as a faster mode of transportation than walking in any area that has dense enough trees to go from tree to tree. Theres something that really changed the game about tree climbing for me and If you want to try and figure it out yourself then don't read on beyond here but it took me awhile to figure it out and I'd be sad if some people never did. You can actually grab onto the leaves by holding spacebar while you're falling and use the momentum to jump forward again so if you go up to the highest point in a tree you can jump from tree to tree through the canopy quite easily without even landing on any branches by just swinging through the foliage like apes actually do in the wild.

      3. _"Think of it this way... Thinking everything you are taught in school is correct, is like thinking everything on the internet is correct."_ This is the crux of the problem. The moment somebody's ignorant gut feelings and intuitions tell them the science is wrong, they immediately conclude that *everyone on the planet* who believes, studies, uses, or accepts that science is just a mindless sheep who blindly believes what they were taught in school. But that's just a cop-out; a lazy _'solution'_ to the problem of actually doing the work to _show_ people they're wrong and blindly believing. Ever noticed how flat-earthers never use maths? Ever noticed how Creationists never 'debunk' what the science says, but a straw-man argument instead? I'm guessing you didn't notice, because conspiracy-theory thinking is just the laziest of lazy ways of approaching the pursuit of truth. The combat makes sense if they are going for even a higher level of realism as success of a counter would be based on how soon you realize what they are doing and how fast your limbs can react. The sooner you press the right button the better. Just that real life has damn near infinite amounts of buttons to press in every situation while this only has a few. Though too soon should be part of it too. It should have been a bit more of noticing it at the start of the window and holding it to the end of the window to be even more "realistic".

    Agreed. I think the game does have a niche audience, but, this review you've made is accurate.
    I played it for a long time before my old computer shat out, since I've got a new one, I have it downloaded but have this question in my head "Do I feel like it?" and the answer is "Nope, not now."
    I totally agree with the mention of how they should've dialed back/dumbed down the evolution by natural selection aspect.
    But.. above all else, the fact that it was one of those timed Epic Exclusives that started everything off, to me, is an indicator of the lack of attention to these things.
    Very few games which started off as timed Epic Exclusives have turned out to be as good as they seemed like they would be. I mean, Mechwarrior 5 should've been an easy job; the IP is solid, Mechwarrior 4 laid all the groundwork through the core game and its expansions to make the game shine from the getgo. Yet, it flopped for a few reasons, not only the lack of ethics involved by the devs who took Steam preorder money and then Kickstarter money and then last moment went "Oh, yeah, despite all this money, we decided the game would be better with more money from Epic, so fuck you and yours if you bought the pre-order on Steam or pleged on Kickstarter because it was going to release on Steam, we're out." all the while, the game that they released looked nothing as good as Mechwarrior 4. One can debate that the upped visuals were a plus, but, Mechwarrior 4 is abandonware, and has a cult following of modders who can circumvent that. but, even when I tried playing it through Xbox game pass, I was not only disappointed with the experience, the performance was horrid. I got a key for it from, I think a humble bundle, for Steam after it launched there, and... not much had changed on the performance side and the gameplay was very very on-rails feeling. I have the game now, and, I'll admit, they've done things to rectify that mess, and good things in general with DLC that do add things, but, even now there's weird performance bugs in this game that I don't even get when I run Cyberpunk 2077 on full settings, and, I've got a better rig now soo...
    Other than MW 5. It seems to be the same story for the other games that were timed exclusives too... I mean, ffs, Stardock used to make some pretty solid games. Galciv 3 was not a good example, but, Galciv 2 was as well as Galciv. They just shat out Galciv 4 on Steam and, its been "in development" on Epic through and exclusive for a while and we're getting update patches from the dev announcing on this 1.0 "Hey guys, sorry the game is a mess, remember, it's an Early Access!!! It will take time to make this game good." Umm... where the fuck did the money go when it was on Epic? What the hell was the development while it was on Epic? How can you bake a game for a year with an up front payment for a not-small amount of money from them and still cling to the "remember, it's an Early Access" line especially since the game that launched on Steam launched with a paid DLC included with the price of the game... ffs. This stuff is not directly related to Ancestors, but, at the same time, to me, it's a sign of the caliber of quality that goes into games, even from IP's that are verifiably good with otherwise good devs which ends up a big fucking mess more times than there's a success.
    What success? Satisfactory... and, even with that title, it's not the best example of a game, but, they're still working on it, I'll give them that at least.

    I saw footage a couple of months ago and I thought "This is pretty cool alpha footage, hope they get this off the ground" and then it turns out they weren't actually going to improve the climbing at all and it was proper gameplay of the nearly finished thing... It honestly looks like a finished mobile game

    Wonderful concept, that's all it is. It's not a game.

    This game actually looks cool. They got my $40. I don't care what scores it gets, it looks like a great game for a Sunday afternoon with nothing better to do. I'll probably wait and pick it up on console, though. I don't use Epic. I'm hoping Xbox will have it on gamepass, but if not I'll pick it up on the PS4.

    It looks really cool, but yeah if it's not fun or intuitive, and it punishes the player it's not fun. Even as an app for a university, if it's taking away the skills that's students' time wasted. They likely haven't updated it as it's almost 3 years on now. Oh well

      It doesn't punish you at all. If you die your clan carries on. Not intuitive? That just says that you are literally dumber than an Ape!

    It looks like you're just bad at the game. Eventually you learn how to do things like swing on branches and fight off predators, and when you do it's rewarding to use all the knowledge you've aquired. The large learning curve can be frustrating and turn off impatient people who are used to instant reward. For those of us that like slow paced survival games it's very fun. If you don't want to play it yourself I highly suggest watching TagBackTV's Ancestors playlist, he's made it interesting and entertaining to watch. Some of his streams are 2+ hours long, because it's a long game. Stick with it, figure out how to play and you'll hopefully find that learning how to properly survive and explore the immense map is highly rewarding.

    Completely disagree mate.First of all all cutscenes can be skipped, combat is easy and fun, you can relearn all skills in about 20 seconds with analyzing elder corpses, climbing and jumping around on the trees is awesome, the graph is okey for this kinda big world, etc, etc.Seems in this case you were unprepared to review this game.Imho this game is a gem and i hope ppl. will support it.

    Curious as to whether this game has matured (Evolved...?) over the past couple years. It could be an interesting concept if the gameplay is good. It's on sale on Steam right now, and I was wondering if it was worth dropping 10 bucks on?

    this should have been a MMO could have been the best new and different survival game of 2019...would have been so cool playing with others and watching how they evolved how large their families are etc. .. DEVELOPERS ADD MULTIPLAYER!

    Glad those apes had the patience to redo things.. now we know . From a gameplay experience might be not so good , but the actions and the way we evolve are very accurate , reason why is normal to lose the skills . Same as in reality , your kid won't know shit until he learns .

    Noah the preservation of species would be a great concept as well. at least it wouldn't be based on a fairy tale called evolution.

    Just want to note that this game employs Lamarckian evolution mechanics, so it's not even a good educational tool for demonstrating *actual* evolution. Boring and not even a good simulation.

    • @TyrDrum

      That's what gets me. What's the point of adapting the evolutionary theory as gameplay if the gameplay isn't fun and the theory isn't even accurate.
