  • How to paint furniture, learn how to glaze furniture, or what the dresser makeover process is all about? This video shows a how to paint a dresser a dresser using latex paint and wood stain for glazing. Join my Furniture Painting community on Discord. New painters welcome!: / discord
    -SEE MATERIALS AND STEPS BELOW.-
    Step 1: Top was stripped (not shown) then sanded with 120 and 220 grit sandpaper.
    Step 2: Minwax Wood Conditioner applied prior to staining. Let sit for 10 minutes. Excess wiped off after.
    Step 3 (not shown): Minwax Dark Walnut oil based stain applied. Let sit for 15 minutes. Wiped and blended. Let stand for 6 hours. Second stain application brushed on and wiped as above. This was to acheive a darker tone.
    Step 4: Cleaned with TSP. Wiped again with damp rag. Sanded with 150 grit sandpaper on a Black & Decker Mouse sander. Dust brushed off.
    Step 5: Three coats of Valspar Signature "Mystique" white in a satin finish painted on the body.
    Step 6: Minwax Dark Walnut oil based stain brushed on and wiped off immediately in sections to glaze/antique the piece. Satin paint must be used to acheive the same look.
    Step 7: Drawers prepped, painted, and glazed.
    Step 8: Top coat applied in 4 coats using aerosol Minwax Clear Lacquer in a satin finish. Sanded with a 3M 320 sanding sponge between coats 3 and 4 to acheive a smoother finish. Light coats are best. Ventilation a MUST.
    Step 9: Hardware reinstalled and minor repairs made.

    Enjoyed watching and listening to you as your created your renewed piece. As a new practioner it would be helpful to hear explanations literally one step at a time..including when you dust off with a dry, clean paint brush to remove dust particles....Using the exact brands and names and where to purchase is really appreciated as well. Explanations on why or why not to choose a particular step is very valuable as well! You are gifted. Thank you!

    I was inspired a couple of years ago to re-invent a desk I had. With all my time and efforts, today it sits in my bedroom, with a table cloth on it, hiding my hideous paint job! Nice job on this!

      Thank you. I tend to choose products that have high quality value but also priced fairly enough that it doesn't eat too much into my profits. There are some great products out there made specifically for DIYers that are a bit pricey but you just cant find anything that compares for home use because they are designed by.... DIYers :D I know what you mean though. I try not to focus too much on products, and to be honest I forget to list or show them and people chew me out for it. XD

    I just found a beautiful fruitwood French Provincial Dresser that is in pretty nice condition (the top needs to be sanded & refinished, but the rest is in remarkably good shape). Hardest part was deciding how to refinish...after checking out Pinterest and TH-cam, decided this is the look I want. This is classically beautiful! Thank you for sharing tips on re-finishing..Have refinished cheap furniture before, but this is the first really nice piece I have attempted, and am a bit nervous about it. I appreciate all the steps you listed and I intend to follow to a "T". Thanks again...can't wait for the finished product!

    Just a tip... you should use a foam sanding block for sanding your edges. It's easier to handle and conforms to the shape of the edge and any non-flat surfaces.

    • @ThatShabbyGuy
      @ThatShabbyGuy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tip but I've pretty much got things down by now. I've used the same sander for four years. I get things done a lot faster. Foam blocks rip apart too fast for my liking. The only time I use a foam block is a 320 grit for my final sand down during top coating.
