- I get asked a lot about how to glaze furniture over chalk paint. So in this video, I’m showing you exactly how I glaze with Valspar Antiquing Glaze.
You can glaze over chalk paint with a few simple steps, transforming any piece of furniture into a masterpiece.
Adding glaze to painted furniture accents the details and makes them pop, but also deepens a dark color, or antiques the paint color a bit!

Omg, I just liked on your video and couldn’t believe you are making over the same furniture piece I have in the garage. I have to get busy now and make it over!

Fantastic work! Love your step by step explanation... this is my 'go to' video when I'm working on a project... Thank YOU!
I love it! It is a lot of work but well worth it. I'm going to try glaze.
I found you at the right time. I’m right between projects and I wasn’t sure if I should glaze right over chalk paint… you just saved my project. Thank you for this video 😘
You do a really great job. Professional and not half "peached."

varathane is my favorite too but I just bought some hemp oil and I am going to give it a try.
You absolutely make me want to paint my sons old bedroom set for ME to use in that exact color. Love it.!! Excellent job.
Thank you!!
I've only tried glaze like this a few times. You're making me want to practice!
I would love to see you glaze a piece!
Just discovered A Ray of Sunshine and I love it. Katie you are one of my VERY favorite!
I love this tutorial. No nonsense, you get right to the point, describing all the steps and giving the necessary tips. I would love to see this with a lighter color of chalk paint and then a dark glaze. I will look through your other videos and see if you have anything like that. Thanks for this excellent tutorial.
Thanks for the video. Great tutorial and the piece turned out beautiful!
Thank you so much!

Wow! Just beautiful. Your technique is flawless and just used your 10% discount to get jitterbug. What a transformation and just beautiful result. Using the color combo also. Thanks Nathalie.
Thank you so much!!
It did seem like a lot of work, but OH MY what an end result!!! I may try this after I've worked a bit more on re-doing old furniture 🙂
Let me know when you do try it!
Wow that is amazing job 🌹
Thank you so much!
So beautiful!
Thank you so much!
I would love your ideas/opinion on how to apply glaze or wax on just such a project but that has lots and lots of detail in the furniture. I have a shabby table with loads of carved detail.
Great question! I would probably still follow the same method as in this video and use a rag to get into the details as best you can. It will be more tedious and time consuming, but I think it might still be the best way to do it. If the details are too small and intricate you could try using a very small detail paint brush for those areas. If only you could spray wax or glaze in a sprayer then that would be amazing and so much easier! 😜
Looks beautiful!! Thank you!!☺️
Absolutely beautiful!! I’m going to paint a dresser and Kendall charcoal with silver hardware would you have any idea what glaze would be pretty over it??? Thanks so much!
Beautiful!😍
So if the wood is dry and u use chalk paint and polly then the wood has no t been nourished.
Can u use oil polly?
Or oil paint.
I noticed hardly any flipper uses oil paint. The smell is amazing and it is flourishing for wood.
The glaze is cool. U use dry baby wipes?
And u use it cos they r lint free?
The droors don’t get stuck to the base being sealed while still closed like that?
Did u use brown or black glaze? It looked black but I heard you mention brown. I’m just about to glaze a blue dresser with black but you’ve got me wondering if I should try the brown. Thanks for the tutorial!
Why keep drawers in while painting? I took mine out, should I put them back in then paint? Im using a brush btw. Ty in advance 😊
It just saves me space and it makes it easier for me. and so I don’t have to bend over to spray them all… I have back issues and it hurts to bend over to spray them.
There is no right or wrong when spraying.
I love your custom colour combo! I'm definitely trying it out. Thanks for the informative video on glazing. I tend to avoid it because it's so fiddly.
This is STUNNING😍 I’ve never watched your videos before but just subscribed! Quick question: what did you do to the top of this piece? I noticed in the before it was quite scratched up
Thank you! I sanded it and stained it. 😍
One question about the baby wipes? Any particular thing we should know - avoid scented baby wipes or ones with baby oil. I am so grateful to see this video. It's exactly what I want to do with my old dresser.
I usually use just plain old wipes. Not scented or anything. But that’s what I use with my babies anyways. I’m sure that some are better than others, but I haven’t tested many. Haha I just use what I have.
@@ARayofSunlightthe wet wipes? Correct?
Hi, interesting video. I have been watching and learning about chalk paint and glazing. You are the first one to suggest that the poly goes on first and then a glaze. I am redoing my kitchen and wanted some distressed cabinets using different tones of chalk paint with a glaze up top. I would have put the poly on at the end as a top coat. I am now more confused, I understood that the glaze worked with the chalk paint not against it?
If you put glaze on top of the porous chalk paint it will soak right in and you won’t be able to remove it or play around with it to your liking. Then when you’re done glazing you put more poly on the top to seal in the glaze. Do a little test on some scrap wood to see what you think.
@@ARayofSunlight I am still on testing boards so will try both ways. Key is that my kitchen is painted white, I will be using a primer first, I am not painting directly on wood.
I've never seen poly prior to glaze either. Most people use a damp cloth or buy extender to get the glaze to wipe up. I'm confused now
So glaze gives the piece an antique look ?
Yup!
Wow!!!
I chalk painted a kitchen table and for my protective coat I sprayed 5 coats of Rustoleum Chalked Protective Topcoat. Not to happy with the finish. Wonder if I can use the Varathane Polyutherane over the Rustoleum top coat. Anyone know? Thanks. A Ray of Sunshine... Katie Scott (whose work i love) suggested her viewers check you out. Glad she did.. your work is phenomenal.
Oh no! Yep you can put Varathane’s water based polyurethane over the Rustoleum. What didn’t you like about the Rustoleum’s finish?
Thanks so much for the love!! Glad to have you here! Katie is great isn’t she?
Is the glaze necessary after the Varathane water poly?
Nope, only if you want glaze. This video was specifically if you want a glazed look over the chalk paint.
I used Valspar antiquing glaze and after letting it dry for 3 days, when I applied another coat it lifted the first layer of glaze. I repainted, glazed again and let it dry a week. It still lifted. Won't use it again.
After chalk paint, I waited more than 24 hours to glaze. A part of my dresser top is not drying. When I rub off the glaze in this area, the glaze rubs off showing the chalk paint. What can I do? I used Rustoleum chalk paint and Rustoleum glaze.
Can you get the same result if you don’t start with chalk paint?
Yes! Though be careful if you are topcoating the glaze. Some paints don’t do well with topcoat.
What paint sprayer do you have?
All of the supplies and tools that I used are linked in the description. 😀
OMG ..I was just looking at this paint and these two colors in particular! I’ve never tried it before, but sounds like you recommend trying it - and wow the mix of the two is gorgeous! If you didn’t glaze this piece would you have needed to top coat it?
Wow! What timing! These two colors on their own are my absolute favs from their line.
It would still need to be top coated without the glaze. I just put 3 coats of poly on if I don’t glaze.
@@ARayofSunlight but I thought this paint had a built in top coat like Fusion paint
@@dianealves8060 hmm. I’m not sure what other paint you’re thinking of. But country chic paint doesn’t have a topcoat built in. If you don’t topcoat it, it will get dirty really really easily and you won’t be able to scrub it if it gets anything on it.
Just rubbing my hand on country chic paint that hasn’t been top coated will leave a dirty streak.
@@ARayofSunlight good to know- I saw another video where the person said it was an all in one paint with topcoat built in.. Fusion Mineral paint doesn’t need to be top coated. I hate using a top coat - makes me break out in a sweat! Drips just make me crazy! Still might try it- will use your coupon!! 🙌🏼
@@dianealves8060 hmm I’m not sure why anyone would say it has a topcoat built in.. I mean, it’s decently durable on its own, but it’s definitely not like fusion mineral.
Honestly, if I had to brush poly on, I would hate it too. I absolutely love spraying it on though.
Have you ever tried putting it on with a sponge? Country chic paint has a painting sponge that helps poly go on without streaks. I get the sponge a little wet first and then I dip it in the poly. That’s the only other way I can stand to put on poly.
LoveIt
So I am not sure I am seeing it well , but I don't get what's the point of the glaze? Is it to darken the existing color? Because to me the dresser looked dirty after you are finished...please clarify
That was my thought as well. I thought it looked better before the glaze.
@@anupriyasingh2302different tastes. It’s called ANTIQUING glaze. To make it look older and a little dirty. That was the point. She said you don’t have to use a tinted glaze. You can do a clear glaze. This isnt hard.
I was told you don't have to sand before you chalk paint.
I got the same effect with dark wax. This is too much work in my opinion
Mmmmm think it’s way tooo much work. Maybe for a piece I am
Wanting to keep for myself for a specific property we want thy look
‘Just and
I don't know why you bother with expensive chalk paint if you're just going to spray varathane on it; you'd be saving time and money by using regular paint.
What do you recommend?
hot
Too complicated.
Bad choice for color to show glaze work. You cant even see it.
