Fun fact. The .243 win has almost the same case capacity as the magical 6.5 creedmoor. I run a hotter charge in my Sons 243 than my wife’s 6.5 cm. Ballistic prove more velocity and only slightly lighter bullet. 243 all the way.

@@joshradford1989 well some of the reason I think the 6.5 is good because you can get as low I 90 grain to use for wolves coyetes and then 156 grain that can take down a moose and the cm is a flatter shooting cartridge then some others and it’s long aerodynamic bullets retains more energy.

    • @joshradford1989

@@jordandesjardins9330 I can complete agree with that only because the factory built 243’s typically come in 1:10 twist barrels and factory ammo stop at around 100 gr. But a custom 243 with a 1:7.5 twist barrel with 20thousands free bore and I promise it will shoot the same bullets as the 6.5 faster. Now with that being said I understand it’s not apples to apples but the shoulder angle and case capacity are more ideal for velocity

It’s definitely weak compared to the bigger cals though. I own a 243 and it’s all about shot placement and bullet choice. You get idiots choosing a varmint or light projectile and then taking a hard quartering shot and the bullet never reaches the vitals that’s the problem. Nice placement! Looking for ballistic results on .243 for an idea for ammunition buying for this years hunt and ran across your video. My son doesn't head shoot em, and he blows rib bone out the other side with a Remington 100 grain Core Lokt. My first rifle is a .243 Remington Model 788 (look it up). Remington stopped making it because it is a never die, tack driver. Vortex, trigger job, and a sling is all I have done to it. My son has claimed it, when he moves out I'll be left with only my .308 Savage Axis. Down here in Texas, a .243 is all you need. 100 grain Remington Core Lokt round will plow right through the shoulder bone of a medium hog at 100 yds. I can sell, this almost 40 year old rifle, for over 400 bucks what I paid for it. When he gets it, terms is that he never sells it. Though he will be allowed to sell it back to me for 150 buck original price.

Heaviest projectiles accurate in the individual rifle make a difference with light calibres like 243. And slower kill better, inertia over splat. Recall about 2600 fps behind 105-110 gr was ok in the 243. 80gr in a BLR are noticably light, but needed as heavier ones are inaccurate due to rifling twist vs projectile length

I’ve taken 11 deer in the past 3 years. 9 out of 11 have dropped dead in their tracks. Range is between 90-185 yards. Shooting 100grain Remington bullets. Some of my buddies have 7mm, .270, 30-06, etc. shooting 150grain or what have you, and still have the deer run off 50,100, and so forth yards. At the end of the day, if you know proper shot placement on an animal, you have nothing to worry about. By the way, I’m not a hunter who takes neck, spine, or head shots.

Once 110 deer have been shot the statistics will be more robust & not possibly just a good or lucky run. The loss rate should reverse at 200m+ with the calibres mentioned.
Heavier calibres have more leeway for error and difficult situations. What many don't accept is some are overpowered especially at close range, or too powerful for the shooter to use accurately. .243's are underpowered for large animals, still nice to shoot select shots with.

    • @devinb3397

@@johnmead8437 I agree. Some people shouldn’t be using 243’s because they don’t understand the limitations. A 243 does not penetrate very far with most store bought ammo, if you hit a hard quartering shot by the time the projectile hits the vitals it’s not doing much damage and it probably won’t exit. Meaning lots of people lose deer. So it’s really not the cartridge that’s a problem it’s the users. I like my 243 and know it’ll put deer down but I’m not stupid enough to shoot a buck up the ass. With my 7mm rem mag and mono projectiles I can shoot through an elephant though and take a lot more shots

its not the ammo but the placement. if you use a high shoulder shot it will drop them in their tracks not matter what caliber you use. if the deer was hit in the lungs or heart it would have taken off running. still would have died but just not in its tracks.

It may or may not run with a heart or lung shot. You just can't predict for sure. I've double lunged deer that have run 50 yards, and I've done the same and it was instant lights out, DRT. Seen it both ways multiple times. The funny thing about terminal ballistics is that it's almost impossible to predict exactly what will happen.

Anyone that believes a .243 Winchester cartridge chamber rifle will not effectively kill a white tailed deer has his head where the sun can't shine!!!
I have a Remington 700 youth model with a cheap 4x12 scope mounted that a record of 5 for 6 shots with 4 different people operating the rifle feeding it with the cheapest Winchester 100 grain projectiles from Wal-mart. Longest distance was over 200 yards and the shortest distance was about 25 yards. 4 bucks and 1 doe. The doe took 2 shots, second was to put her out of misery due to the 1st shot was a high lung shot. Bucks went down with 1 shout with no tracking required.

Anyone who has lost a few when perfect shots are not on offer and achieved. A .22 does if hit in the right place. It's the failures that count, and there is no substitute for calibre at the right speed (not always the fastest speed)

I can tell you right now knockdown power on deer is a myth.. over here in Australia ive shot 2 dozen fallow and sambar deer with a 243, 270, 308 and 7mm rem mag. If you hit spine or head they’re down no matter the cal. If you hit behind the shoulder it all depends on the deer. I shot a small fallow with my 7mm and blew a 6 inch hole out of it and it still ran like nothing happen even . Meanwhile with the 243 if you hit near the spine they drop. I still use the 243 and trust it if I can make a good shot.
There’s nothing wrong with the 243 or small cals. You just have to know your limitations. With the 7mm rem mag and a monolithic 140gr at 3200fps, I can take hard quartering or completely front or rear on shots because the bullet goes a long long way and does lots of damage. I’d never take those shots with a 243. If they’re dead broadside or ive got a headshot the 243 works perfectly fine

  • @lbbradley55

If you have had a problem with Deer running off with a 243 then shoot the Ballistic Tips ! They won't go 10 YARDS...! the only problem with them would be if you hit a limb or twig in-between you and the Deer !
But that's true with any Hyper round.!

  • @Jeremy.r97

I know how much power the .243 has. I shot a doe probably bigger than that spike, and shot her through the heart, and she never left her tracks.

A country boy can survive. Nice shot. I hunt the Caddo National Grasslands WMA in the Bois D'Arc section near the Red River but I did not get anything this season, not even a feral hog after the end of deer season. Where I hunt is so heavily wooded that shots are more likely to be 40 to 50 yards or less. But so overgrown. So, I bring a backpack with a hoist and gambrel because I will need to skin and quarter to get the harvest out of there.
The closest I got to venison was some from a colleague in business. And Kountry Boy Pork and Venison Sausage. My wife grew around there and also, Chapel Hill sausage, which is made not too far from that.

jimmy pesto I'm about the same size. ( a bit taller and maybe 5 pounds more. Much younger tho) and hell. You could handle a 270. Its in between the 308 and 243 for recoil and power. And if you are comfortable for "higher kicking" I would go for 308. But for low recoil and higher stopping power. 270.

    • @johnmead8437
      @johnmead8437 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@thedodob1rd Check the relative case sizes for recoil and shooter comfort, and the .308 is every bit as an effective killer at any range, although without the very flat trajectory and overpowered close range issues
Recoil-shyness is an individual thing irrespective of size, & .308 is nicer to shoot than the long cartridges.
