  • 2006 Dodge Ram Stalling Issue: Truck is stalling when I come to a stop. It also will stall on occasion when I stop in reverse and shift to drive. The problem is intermittent. Some days it will driver perfect other days it stalls or at least bogs down at stops. The truck always immediately restarts and runs great. Thoughts I had were
    Torque Converter - A rebuilt unit was just installed with the tranny rebuild
    Speed sensor

    Hi!
    I'm 15 and my mom had a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 that had this problem instead of fixing it she got a new car, now the truck is mine.
    I've been researching a lot and i found that the MAP sensor can get corrosion and it wont work as well and can cause stalling or idle problems, so far it seems to work but i only have a learners permit so i can't really be 100% sure ^_^
    Hope it helps

    Loathe, that's how mine started, start paying attention to your idle when slowing down at stop lights and see if it idles down. From what I've been told you can not service or clean the iac. Its part of the throttle body and must be replaced at the same time. I have not yet replaced the iac. Most people that have say it doesn't solve the problem... I'm hoping to do that in a month or so.

    I read you sold this truck but in case anyone else reads this. I just had an 06 come by my shop doing the same thing.
    If you have a code then get that dealt with first. You need to look at all the modules. Not just the ECU! Most cheap scanners will only read the ECU. But you especially want to check for codes in the TCM and TIPM. If your truck runs like crap or has a loss of power at times then that's different and get that dealt with. If your truck runs good but idles crappy then that's also different. Also if it shakes a whole bunch before stalling that's probably different too.
    HOWEVER! If your truck runs good, idles good, stalls very abruptly, starts right back up every time and does not set a code then it could very well be with the transmission. If the fluid isn't good or the transmission has a sealing issue then they can be susceptible to having the torque converter lockup clutch be slow to release. This'll either stall it right out or will cause it to shudder when you take off from a stop. Can also cause the truck to shudder when creeping along.
    So make sure the level is good and isn't aerated (lots of bubbles). Go for a good drive to get it nice and warm, park on a level ground, shift through the gears and check it in NEUTRAL. They have long dipstick tubes so make sure you check multiple times to ensure you don't get a false reading from fluid sticking to the tube. You want to see a nice even line where the level is.
    If the level is low then you need to fix the leak and fill it up. Make sure to put ATF +4 in it. I would stick with MOPAR fluid. Don't bother with aftermarket ATFs. If you can't find the leak then check the transfer case. The transmission can leak past the output seal and fill up the transfer case. So pull out the fill plug on the transfer case. If the level is really high and it pours out then you know that's the case. If it only dribbles out then that seal is fine.
    If the level is good and it's still stalling but the fluid has lots of bubbles then you can try removing the transmission oil pan and replacing both tranny filters. The spin on filter has a male threaded coupler that sometimes stays in the tranny when you take the filter off. It's plastic and not reusable. Make sure to pull it out so you can spin in the new filter. Put some fluid around the rubber o-ring of the filter and spin it on snug without over tightening it. Just be careful starting it. Sometimes they want to start crooked and can cross thread easily.
    The flat filter has one torx screw holding it in. Check the seal in the transmission for that filter. If it looks good and has a metal outer ring then just leave it in there. If you have to change it then be really careful taking it out. Don't scratch the aluminum surfaces. Also make sure your new one is good. A bunch of aftermarket filters come with cheap seals that have an outer plastic edge and are just garbage. You want to make sure you get a good metal one even if it means going to the dealer. It's cheap anyways. Make sure the neck of the flat filter is wet with tranny oil and put it into its place. After you put the screw in push up on the edge where it goes into the valve body and make sure it's fully seated.
    If that didn't fix it then you may still have an issue with the valve body or solenoid pack but I'd leave that to a transmission specialty shop. A transmission repair shop has a lot more experience than a general automotive repair shop when it comes to transmissions and the price will be the same. That's not just my bias speaking because I work at a tranny shop!

      E Urban i have a 99 dodge durango it starts up fine but when i take off then come to a stop it acts like it want to stall but stays running if i push on the gas a little and it spits and sputter while i drive and acts like it wants to stall sometimes even while i push on the gas and it recently just started only going up to 30 mh and only lets me go to 3rpms what could cause this?

    • @ecwurban
      @ecwurban 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds engine related. I'd check the basics. Tuneup, air filter, etc. Might also have plugged exhaust if you can't go past 3000rpm. If you have a bad misfire then you're not burning the fuel that's being sprayed in the cylinder. Raw fuel can burn up the cats in short order.
      But could be a lot of things. Sometimes you just have to look at what's good to try and narrow things down. I'd start with checking the spark plugs. And while you have them out throw a compression gauge in there to rule that out.

    My 2003 Ram 1500 is currently doing the same exact thing as your Ram did (even the part about that it drives fine on some days and acts up on others). I realize the video is 4 years old but can you tell me what was the fix for this issue you had?

  • @tweker69
    @tweker69 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    my 05 ram 1500 4.7 v8 does the same thing. its the idle air control valve if you do not want to drop 60 buck on a new one you can go get a can of throttle body cleaner and pull off the i.a.c.v and clean it up.mine did not start doing it till about 6 months after i installed a forced cold air intake. all the oil in the filter was going down the tube and gumming up that valve. inside of it theres this tube that slides opens and close and as it gets gummed up it starts sticking , which is what throws of your idle. i clean mine every oil change and never had a problem with it again. only cost me a can of cleaner and about 2 hours

      Tweek I have been jump starting my 98 Ram for a week. It is my secondary vehicle so I don’t drive it as much. This morning I jumped it warmed it up and half way down the street it stalled. I turned it on again but I had to jump it again. It turned on but only stayed on while my foot was in the gas. If I let go of the gas it stalls. Is it possible that the battery is so shot? I know the alternator kicks in after starting but I just wondering

    I tried all the common fixes for this common issues on the 5.7 hemi in a ram, transmission fluid was good, unplugged the egr, cleaned the throttle body swapped the map sensor with a known good one, no change the vehicle still dies..... another tech here at dodge had a used throttle body swapped it and I could not get the truck to die after this. In my instance the truck needed a throttle body. Mopar one is $425 just a heads up. This fixed the issue on the truck I was working on.

    A jumpy low idle is usually a idle air control valve. If you stop and it just stalls it’s typically a dirty or broken mass airflow sensor or a bad air filter. Aside from that the exhaust gas recirculation valve gets clogged with carbon and may need replaced. The last thing I can think of is a vacuum leak. Hope that helps.

    I changed so much stuff out on my truck to find my stalling issues. I changed the PCV valve ,EGR valve, spark plugs, ignition coils, fuel pump. All the stuff needed to be changed out but did not solve my initial issue. it ended up being 1 1/2 quarts low of transmission fluid. After I added the transmission fluid it fixed my issues. There was no check engine light codes. I own a Snap-On solus ultra computer and I was not familiar with this dodge issue.

    I just had this same issue on 2009 Ram 1500. No Engine light but PCM would say low hydraulic pressure. Took it to dodge dealership, they tried a number of things to fix it but to no avail. Turns out the stall is due to the torque converter not having the correct pressure to disengage. To fix the issue I have to get a rebuild kit on the transmission pump and a new solenoid block. I would say when this happens have someone with a scan tool run diagnostics on your truck. There are a number of things that could be wrong and the scan tool should help out with that. I do know one thing always user dodge OEM transmission filters and oil for all transmission maintenance. After market filter and oil cause froth and it will mess up your pump and solenoid block. 545RFE or 45RFE transmissions are delicate POS's. Also found out that speed sensors will cause the same behavior if one or both are not working correctly. After the work was done trunk run and shifts better than it did before. Hope this helps if it does please pass it on.

  • @Roller76

    First things first, are there any check engine codes? If you have a check engine light on then it has codes. They will narrow it down. My guess though, is the Throttle Position Sensor. Buy a Standard Electric brand, or product, because they give you a lifetime warranty. Also, there is a sensor in the transmission pan. Its the Transmission Pressure Sensor. It can and will cause rough shifting and stalling. If its not the TPS then I'd guess that sensor. But buy a good quality transmission pan gasket, Fel-Pro, with new quality transmission filters, Raybesto, and NOT FRAM CRAP lol. Messy but simple job. Oh and replace transmission fluid lol.

    Although I can see the value of a K&N filter, I shouldn't have too. It would be a band aid to the real problem and I'm about 99.9% it wouldn't fix the issue. I'm using a filter that is clean and spec'd for the engine. It shouldn't need anymore air than it's getting.

      Hi Shawn, I have an '08 Ram Hemi and my truck always stalls after I put in new fuel until I drive it a few miles. So, I have the same problem as you. I bought mine in 2012 at 4 years old (had 14,000 miles on it) and I've taken it to mechanics and even the Dodge dealership over the years, but they could never fix the problem. So, I've learned to live with it and simply baby the truck when I buy gas. But it's really annoying and I want to get it fixed. I was talking with someone last night who had the same problem with their 2009 Ram Hemi (different generation though) and they told me to check the alternator, but after searching TH-cam, it led me to this video where this video shows the stalling issue. My truck is now showing a dashboard light and it's the EGR. It occurs once a year. A mechanic I go to still believes the problem is with the EGR and also the evap system. So, they're going to dig into the issue again this week. But I'm finally happy to finally find people who have the same problem after all these years. I hope I can get it solved. I really love my truck. But now from my friend with the '09 Ram Hemi has informed me my truck has the Hemi tick, ugh, which appears to be a common problem on many Ram Hemi's, even the newest ones. From what I've seen on TH-cam, the Hemi tick means a new motor or replace the cams. I hope your truck has been repaired.

Now I added 1 more pint or little less. So I will report how truck performs and I will also send you pictures and measurements of oil height on dipstick after 40 mile drive on highway, so you can check your oil level by yourself. Do you tow with your truck? I'm just asking so I can figure out your max trans temperature.

    My 06 Ram 1500 was doing the same thing. When rolling up to a light the engine would just turn off, power everywhere else. At speed the truck would "buck" or "skip" and the check engine light would come on, blink and/or stay solid. A couple times the engine stopped. First, take it somewhere to see if there is a trouble code saved in the computer. This will tell you what the issue is. For me, the problem was the Crank Sensor. According to my mechanic, the crank sensor detects a certain spot and if it doesn't hit that spot perfectly, the engine shuts down. Replaced the sensor (less than $200 total) and the truck is working fine.

    Unfortunately no, I haven't had any luck. I thought it was relearning it's shift patterns for awhile and that was going to resolve the problem but it hasn't. The problem is more sporadic but I think that's just because I've changed my driving habits to work around the stall issue. I think it's a computer or a sensor thing. So I finally installed temperature sensor on #3 pressure test port. Yesterday when outside temperature was 38°F/3°C oil temp barely climbed to 120°F/50°C and today with outside temperature around 48°F/9°C oil temp. climbed to 135°F/58°C. Yesterday I done 40mi highway at around 80mph and today just around 20mi at 70mph. In both cases I travelled about 2miles from highway to driveway and only at that point when speeds were bellow 30mph oil temp. started to rise. On highway temp. gauge didn't move from starting point (104°F/40°C). I suspect this is because of no load on transmission (no trailer). So when oil temp. was about 135°F/58°C level on dipstick way about 36mm(1.4inch) from start when it should be around 44mm(1.7inch) this is at first hot hole mark. So if your scenario is about there and oil level is not at first hot mark, then there is high probability that oil level is too low. I will add oil on monday and report how much oil I added and if jerkiness when I shift in morning from P to D is gone.

      Make sure the gas cap is in good condition first (the rubber gasket isn't torn) then just check around the engine bay to make sure theres no sign of other issues like fluid leaks and if it's really similar to this it's most likely the throttle body just clean it out with engine cleaner don't mess with the two screws on the throttle blade and pretty much it will help if there's still a problem you need to get the throttle position sensor which is on the side of the part I'm talking about

I almost always use tow unless it's a light load, then I might not need it. it's pretty flat in michigan so gear hunting is limited.
