For instance, a lot of these runs are written for the celesta, intended to give a starry, ethereal effect. Now consider the clarinet - what can a clarinet do to produce an ethereal effect within the confines of the instrument? The chord is already spelled out in the rest of the ensemble. Use the fifth instrument to provide the sparkle in a way unique to it. I think that's the approach you should take in these instances. It will be less literally translated, but it may be more effective and playable.
