why is it that on 0:59 it doesn't give you a straight up percentage. It just estiamte it at being 49-57% for one and 47-54% for another and the sister being 46-53%.

In reality its more like a way to seperate people to remember diffrent parents. Because a brother & sister is a brother & sister regardless of one comes from another parent or not. That doesnt change.

I have 4 half siblings that tested with Ancestry. We share anywhere between 2,047 and 1,685 CM. They were clearly marked as half siblings on my results and marked as half 1st cousins on my daughter's test.

Interesting. I'm not disagreeing but most of my contacts had already changed the labels to be more descriptive. I deliberately got screenshots from people who had left the default Ancestry description.

I found out my sister was my half sister because her daughter (my niece) did 23/Me. It was a while before I realized the centimorgan number with my niece was off by half.

I hope you are able to talk to your parents about this.

Thanks. I never thought about half anything before but after my sister and i tested, it only showed 2152 cM. We match on our mothers side but nothing matches on fathers side.

I’m an only child but I have grandparents on both sides of my family who are half-siblings and their kids have tested along with me and one of my grandparents. This where family history and knowing how to interpret centimorgans (cM) really count. It took me awhile to get ahold of this and I sent one or two unfortunate messages out before I got to understand what I was doing.

I'd say that you are among many other people who have had a similar learning experience.

@@DataMiningDNA This gets interesting with me because, like most African-Americans, roughly 30% of my ancestry is European so it is always interesting to see where those white people pop-up (hint: it isn’t always during slavery). That makes the whole half-sibling thing take on a new dynamic when you find someone who shares only a white male ancestor with you. Needles to say whenever I message a white person with just a question a benign question about someone on their tree and they see that we are related and I am Black….I’ve yet to get messaged back😄
