Constantine is a brilliant character. Love the dark ethos of his story. His tv series is underrated but excellent. I look forward to seeing Constantine in the major movie of Justice League Dark!
I use to haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate Constantine with a passion when I first read about him in JLD(and the movie didn't help much either), but then I read a few of his other comics, and saw the first season of his tv show and he grew to be one of my favorites. Good job with the video guys!
now I know he's from Liverpool all I can imagine is Constantine talking to demons with these creepy voices and then talking back is Constantine sounding like Stevie Gerrard..
I would argue that the reason I got interested in Constantine was because of the Keanu Reeves movie. So in my opinion, it served its purpose, or I would have never known of Constantine.
I'm guessing I said something a bit negative about the movie in this video, which, to be fair, is very old at this point. Well, regardless of whatever I said back then, you do make a great point. That movie, for all its flaws, also introduced me to Constantine.
I read somewhere that Constantine's character was inspired on Cugel, a anti-hero of the Jack vance dying earth novels. Don't know if it's true, but i see the resemblance,
Matt Ryan was my introduction to Constantine and when I read Constantine I just envision matts voice as the character because to me Matt absolutely IS John Constantine. I have a lot of passion for this character as he’s so unique and the nature of his character is so intriguing. Similarly to how Walter White made some horrible decisions John does too challenging you rooting for the character morally. I love when they do that in fiction where you’re not sure you should root for the protagonist purely because of the awful irredeemable acts they do. The Hellblazer comic run is unmatched in storytelling, atmosphere and its themes. It’s not simply a horror/ supernatural series. It very much grounds all the demons magic and rituals in reality, as they made John’s world much like our own. Often the main story wouldn’t even be some new demon or vampire, but they’d tackle the state of britain in the 1980s and touching on issues like racism or homophobia. By the end it isn’t a happy ending, which reflects real life. John Constantine will never get a true haply ending and his battle will never actually end, which is both depressing, yet also somewhat fitting. I truly hope that even though the series got canceled and WB got rid of Matt Ryan that with enough fan support we can get a Constantine series that goes fully mature and goes to the darker and grittier places like the Hellblazer comics do. And of course we need Matt Ryan back in the titular role. There is no one else to play John, but Matt Ryan to me.
THIS IS THE HELLBLAZER I KNOW & LOVE!!!(Vertigo)The New 52, not so much. The DC Black Label Hellblazer Is much like the original Vertigo series. This iteration is under Neil Gaiman's Tales of the Dreaming Series. Very Good..!!!
Hello from the future, there are now also a few animated films featuring Constantine that are fittingly dark (pun only semi-intended), and interestingly enough seem to hybridize the depictions from Hellblazer and New 52. Off the top of my head, I recall Justice League Dark, Constantine City of Demons and Justice League Dark Apocalypse War. And good lord does that last one live up to the name.
Ah, man. Good video like always. I randomly stumbled upon the TV show and I only read one arc of Original Sins TPB. The one with that eating demon I think. Unfortunately, Constantine just was not my cup of tea and the artwork just felt so dated. There were also many panels where I felt like I was just reading paragraphs, but to each his own.
Chandasouk it all really depends on what Hellblazer you are reading. Not all of it was great, but some of the stuff I read was genuinely amazing. But glad you liked the video.
MbmXPGamer what never happened? the earth 2 videos? We have a lot of requests (I personally have over 60) so they aren't getting done overnight, I'm afraid. We do as many as we can, but I try to pick content everybody can enjoy, which isn't always what is requested.
mndrew1 not directly, but I do refer to some things established from the books of magic, even if none of the content made it to the already long video. I found four Books of Magic with Constantine in it. That did not feel like it needed any further discussion than what I used.
