This dude cracks me up. In a good way. You can just see that he is so passionate about comics. Good for you dude. As a fanboy myself I look forward watching your other videos.
Thanks for the recap. I have been a Constantine fan since the early 90s, but I did miss a few years when I quit collecting in the early 2000s. I too am a writer, and Hellblazer and Sandman are the titles that both motivated me to write comics and kept me in comics when the superhero genre's spiraled into stupidity as they so often do. Keep up the good work.
Oh year, I just watched the premier of the television series. They did a good job keeping with the source materiel. It is cleaned up a bit for network, but still dark, and so far he is still good old con-job.
NBC fuicked up bad cancelling constantine.... im glad matt ryan was on arrow but it should of been a 2 episode ark at least.. but i hope hes in it again or they bring it back... networks only worry about veiwing numbers.... thats not how tv is rated.... its all about dvring and rewatching. the dvd sales... cause when or if constantine comes out on blue ray and dvd. and when it gets on netflix its gonna blow up and get really popular
I can't believe how well you managed to break down all that cool history in less than 20 minutes...and made some sense of it. Hellblazer was such a cool series and had so many sub-plots and interesting storylines long before being "gothic" was the rave. It's a dark and lonely path he tread, but always fascinating to follow, and you did a great job piecing it all together. Well done!!
Trying to tell constantine's story is tough, theres so much of it. I think you did a good job. Ive been a fan for many years now and u basically hit all the big points.
Enjoyed yr review...I don't know yr other work, but what I thought would be dry was engaging, focused, and increased my interest in the work reviewed, which is the definition of good criticism, no? I look forward to seeing your other videos...thanks for taking the time to help us newer Constantine fans. I only started my adult reading of graphic novels and/or comics when Stephen King 's "Dark Tower" series came out. Thanks again!
I was shocked you didn't mention anything about Papa Midnight or why John sold his soul. You mention a lot of character in rapid succession, but don't really say who they are. Maybe perhaps you did that intentionally so we'd read the comics, but for some who don't have the time or can't located the old archives of the Hellblazer comics, it's just a tad confusing. I got the majority of what you said in your video here, and I thank you for breaking it all down. I was pretty shocked when you said him and Zatanna had gone out. side note question: Who does the production on your videos?
ItsSuperEffective But you can exceed more than an hour of video on TH-cam. Not sure if you make a scripting reference sheet to use for your program to refer to when delivering your speeches to the viewers. Just thought it would help, do whatever you feel comfortable with I suppose.
I know, I have multiple videos that are an hour long, but a 20 minute video in itself takes about 17 hours to make without stopping, not including the writing process, and considering I do over 4 videos a week now, that's just not possible. Maybe I'll do a more in detailed special one day, but for now, its physically impossible for me to do "an hour long history" Videos are hard work xD
I had know idea that Constantine was a comic. All I ever knew was Keanu. Tonight I saw a trailer during a commercial break. I so need to get my hands on the original story! Your video made my day with all the info you presented. Thank you!
he is such a relatable awesome character being calm and controlled while so many horrible shit goes around , but still manages to help the people because he feels like it , hes also a person that doesn't give a damn society but care about saving lives which is more important.
thank you so much for this short go through. i have hated US comics ever since i was a kid (22 now) but this story is so intriguing i decided to read it to see if i can finally finish a series. he's probably my favourite DC character behind batman but i hardly know anything about him, haha.
Nice summary...you didn't mention his crossover into the Sandman universe via Neil Gaimen, which was great, but still a fine job of catching the laymen up to the story. I feel like the new show will seem a little plastic at first, kinda 'Supernatural', but grow darker and more true to the source material as it gains steam...
You forgot to make note of Constantine's involvement in the Books of Magic and Sandman (greatest comic series ever) although the latter was merely a couple cameos really
Awesome history :) John is my favorite character in the Vertigo comics / universe. I'm currently picking up the re-released trades / graphic novels of Hellblazer which is a fantastic series.
Excellent review. Johnny is my very favorite character and you did a great job of covering his bizarre history. And yep--the area you jumped over... that didn't work for me, either.
Very good video, but there needs to be a massive spoiler tag on this. Some things (like John's childhood) aren't revealed to the reader until at least thirty issues in.
I don't think it spoils it to know some of the childhood details, and in particular relation to the birth storyline, that only becomes relevant in the story that it first appears. In fact, in the Family Man story arc, Tom actually gives a completely different story for the circumstances of his birth.
I really want to get into Constantine. I'm a bit picky on the artwork though.. prefere modern artwork. What issue/collected work would you reommend for me? Preferably a origin story of sorts.
Simon Pettersen You might be interested in the rebirth series for Hellblazer. Basically a reboot with newer graphics. It doesn't have quite the same punch because it's censored since it's part of the family friendly DC comics.
It did a version of the Dangerous Habits story arc...wasn't terrible, but also could have been much better with a blond, jaded British guy as opposed to Keanu fake coughing the whole movie...,
I think the only terrible thing that movie did was having Shia Lebouf(sp?)...I didn't mind Keanu Reeves as Constantine, if it had been Sting from The Police, it would've been even better, and hell, I think even Alan Moore would've liked it since he created JC to look like Sting.
Alan Moore hated it, as well as From Hell, V for Vendetta etc, he does not like any for them. That is why in the film adaption of The watchmen he has no credit at all, instead the credits go to the The fella wo did all the artwork, as Alan wanted nothing to do with after watching IP that he did not have rights to, in his eyes, being bent over and given a good goosing.
This was Super Informative! thanks! i just bought HELLBLAZER original sins collection with the first 9 issues, and some swamp thing tie ins, cant wait to read em now! so what happen between 85' and 88' with constantine? just swamp thing appearances?
probably the only comic that actually scared me, and has a character i can strongly relate to ( as odd as that may sound). thanks for the run through - there is so much out there, its tough to get the order right w/o a list. if not to much trouble, could u do an order of available graphic novels? I've only read 2 and they seemed pretty self contained; didn't have much trouble just jumping in.
Thanks for doing this video, I'm new to comics and love Constantine, but I only know about his time in the New 52. Maybe when I get the time and the cash I'll check out his Hellblazer series. I'm also really excited about his new series coming to NBC, I have a felling that it's going to be a hit.
Well we now have our first look at the Matt Ryan playing him, and I have to say... HE IS DEAD ON :) cdn-s3.thewrap.com/images/2014/03/Matt-Ryan-Constantine.jpg People, be sure to check this show out when it's on NBC
Convoluted? You mean the transgender angel, the Buffy gun, the silly mystical mumbo jumbo and feet in a bucket of water as a protection from the fires of hell made perfect sense in that flick? LOL That movie gives new meaning to the term "convoluted", For convoluted comic book history try 'The X-Men'. Not to mention the way the 'Con-stan-teen' movie bastardized a dark little straight and to the point gem of a horror story 'Dangerous Habits' that on the printed page went straight for the jugular in a perfect combination of horror and humor and a bit of satire and reintroduced us to one of the all time great blue collar anti-hero bastard of comics playing a dangerous high stakes con game with Heaven and Hell and a clever little warning on the dangers of smoking all courtesy of Garth Ennis and company among other things. Plus with that 'Con-stan-teen' movie thanks to Keanu Reeves we got a character who was basically a spineless moping dead fish sanitized to the point of putridity with no humor or charisma or edge whatsoever and was no more John Constantine than Sylvester Stallone was Judge Dredd. Am I a hardcore Hellblazer fan? Why yes I am. :-)
Anyone who is a fan of John Constentine will almost certainly also like Harry Dresden the Main character of the Dresden Files Novel series, the first two of which have been adapted into Graphic novels, and three comic book limited series. Like John Harry is working class Wizard, occult detective and troubled Anti-hero who is known for his snarking, cunning, ability to defy the odds and do the seemingly impossible like kill two immortal god like Queens of the Fair Folk, almost kill a two thousand year immortal Sorcerer/Host to a fallen Angel who pretty can't be hurt by anything, exterminate an entire species of vampire in less than a day, come back from the dead about two and a half times (First time he was only technically dead and revived by CPR as part of a Thanatos Gambit to team up with his own Ghost to defeat a powerful evil spirit, second time was as a ghost while still kinda dead and the third time he came back all the way), steal from Hades while managing to back stab the immortal Sorcerer/Fallen Angle host and utterly ruin said evil master minds carefully cultivated reputation as a honest/fair dealer. Then there is the moment of awsome that fans always talk about, the time he rode a Zombie T-Rex into battle.
have you checked out the new TV series of Constantine yet? Its what got me interested in the old Hellblazers comic in the first place.....just to see where this really great character came from ^^
What are your thoughts on the idea of Constantine becoming part of Batman's Insurgency in Tom Taylors Injustice: Year Three, which was announced over the summer and started last month?
great video any constantine novels you would suggest as ive started reading different novels and looking for new ones and john constantine interests me
Constantine is my favourite dc character. I loved the TV series and it's sad it was cancelled before the end off the first season as it Heavily kept to the source material.
Thanks for the Info. I worked at Forbidden Planet in NYC when Hellblazer came out but was not a follower. But i did like the movie, wish there was another.
Constantine is pronounced tine like rhymes with fine. But that aside great video. I absolutely hate that modern DC has no clue what to do with the character, in comics or Adaptation ( which sucks because they have the perfect actor for him in Matt Ryan) and the character has (ironically fitting) been stuck in limbo. What they should do is basically relaunch the Vertigo series, have some story where you find out the New 52 version cut a deal to make himself younger but at the expense of his history and just do Hellblazer #301 and go forward. As for adaptation yeah the Arrowverse is ok, but to be honest with how good Titans was and how Doom Patrol is literally the best show DC has ever made, why not a streaming series? Less restrictions, bigger budget and more complex writing.
you are surprised that a comic book character is not well known outside of the comic book world which is hard for you to get your head around because he was the lead character of another comic book...
I loved that Constantine got involved with the Magus that was holding Morpheus. There was a big party, and one of his friends got lost in the bardo. Somehow Constantine ( there is a lot more to the story) connects all the dots between the real and unreal worlds

do you only write comics or do you draw? If you also draw or know ppl who illustrate for you, I have a 5 page script I would like to see get illustrated.
I'm just amazed of how much time and knowledge you put in to our child hood comic books and superheros . Thanks !!!! Keep Up the good work
Hellblazer is what you get when Supernatural merges with Breaking Bad.
Actually it's what you get when you mix True Detective with American Horror Story and shake.
@@Beerbottles123 throw in the music video for Sting's - If I Ever Lose My Faith In You
This dude cracks me up. In a good way. You can just see that he is so passionate about comics. Good for you dude. As a fanboy myself I look forward watching your other videos.
Just want to point out that John's mother died because his father tried to abort him and his brother with a hanger.
I wish the show had run long enough to get to some of these awesome stories!
This guy's hair is simply marvelous.
o.O
Raiden wants it back, last I heard
almost as marverlous as that guy from Ancient Aliens, now his hair defies gravity
+Casey Nystrom it is amazing
Casey Nystrom it’s bloody awful mate!! Get a grip pleasssseeee!!😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😝😜😝😜😝😜🖤🖤🖤💋

I like just saw you on another video.
It was too little to late with the show. It finally started getting better but by that point people had moved on and were not longer watching.
It should of been on Amc like Preacher and it's sad because they are both from Vertical Comics
Best video about Constantine's origin! Big Hellblazer fan, and you did a great job!

just finished watching all of your history video based on comics. they are great i like how you go really in depth about the characters or teams !
he didnt outsmart the rulers of heaven and hell, he just learned to work with them for the betterment of all

what do you think of the tv adaptation of constantine in legends of tomorrow?
What were your conclusions on Constantine (2005) The movie? Did it cover any of the DC lore? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Wow, the more I here about Constantine(comic book version.), the more I prefer the movie version more. The source version, sound so convoluted.

I rarely like things like this but it was well done accurate and not a waste of time.
but awesome recap for a guy like me who is a dedicated reader but is missing a few issues so i have a few holes in my story
some of the back ground music sounds like its from one of the silent hill games. is it?

can you make a video about the DC character Mister E
what do you mean by god? like the presence god?
Thoughts on the Constantine:The Hellblazer by Ming Doyle?
you are surprised that a comic book character is not well known outside of the comic book world which is hard for you to get your head around because he was the lead character of another comic book...
Can you do The DC hero The Question?
Love Constantine. I have to say though, your head is something I have only imagined in nightmares.
Constantine frees all the children trapped in hell... So that's super nice of him. Lmfao I'm subscribing! This was a great video!
will you make a video for pandora?
I'm surprised there was no mention of the amazing Constantine TV show.
When this video came out the tv series wasn't around
Diomio it was.
This video came out in March 2014. The tv show didn't air till October 2014. Lol
Lol had to Google it even haha
But I do think a pilot aired in May or June of the same year. Not quite sure
I will be really grateful if someone could tell me the title when constantine does his first act of magic? pls

well done
Do u have one on dr fate plase make one by the way love ur videos bro
I loved that Constantine got involved with the Magus that was holding Morpheus. There was a big party, and one of his friends got lost in the bardo. Somehow Constantine ( there is a lot more to the story) connects all the dots between the real and unreal worlds
I just finished watching V for Vendetta less than 5 minutes ago, "There are no coincidences"
Why did you bleach your eyebrows
i thought there was a mosquito-_-
please do history of the lantern corps for the old dc universe...
that would be interesting
Great video, only thing is his name isn't pronounced ConstanTEEN it's ConstantIne, it rhymes with line, sign etc. I know it's like Tomato, TomAte but Constantine did say his name is pronounced that way.
Dude, ur hair is perfect... Like anime style!
I miss him doing these videos
It'd be cool if you could do and episode on Roy Harper. I'm a big fan of him plus he was also my childhood fictional crush. :D
Roy Harper has been so mistreated lately. Makes me sad. I love that Arsenal miniseries he has.
Oh my gosh! Finally there's a history on my favorite comic characters! 😁
A bit of backstory really does help, doesn't it?
Where can i start the very very beginning of John? Name of novels
Can you do the history for Dante from Devil May Cry?
I'd like to see that as well ;)
Where do you get your t-shirts>????
love the skyrim map and skulduggery pleasant books in the background.
I'd be interested in a video about the Specter.
i am a subscriber as of right now nice history bro
the constantine in swamp thing is not canon ? i dont understand. the vertigo one is or viceversa ?
John toth I just refound the quote he says tine Constantine because a guy says I know who you are your john constanteen and that is what constantine rellies with is tine Constantine

When the video started and this guy showed up I was just like GOOOO!
What about lucifer ? you didn't mention him
Hey what are your opinions on the new Constantine show
I'd like to Lear more about JLD and how Constantine teams up with them.
i dont know if you do recommendations but you should do history of the mask it should be interesting but its only in opinion
do you only write comics or do you draw? If you also draw or know ppl who illustrate for you, I have a 5 page script I would like to see get illustrated.
and possibly with enough work and dedication get turned into a series
sweet..I just added you
So what do people think of the series so far?
