Today (11/8/2023) I saw Backbone sent an email about it's 2023 holiday line-up and it looks like they are finally making it clear that there is an updated 2nd generation version of the controller. So it should be easier to pick up the 2nd generation with less confusion now.
Thanks Mario! Great video. I just ran into this same situation. Luckily I am able to return my gen 1 backbone. However, they should market their gen 2 model for consumers looking to purchase this product specially for iPhone 15.
In the official web site there are the differences between the free version and the plus. But yeah It’s kinda frustrating that is a paid version feature🫤
This review helped me so much. I was about to purchase the PlayStation portal for $200. Although you do get the feedback and the PS5 like controller, you would still need a STRONG internet connection to play since the portal is NOT a stand alone console, it’s more of an accessory. I also purchased the 15 pro max and Apple does claim some video game support and I’ve been wowed myself having the phone for a few weeks now. I think I’ll pick up a back bone for travel and road trips because I’ll always have my Verizon 5G network on hand to play games / complete daily’s on Gran Turismo ETC. Thank you so much for the great review, I am now subscribed.
Thank goodness I waited to buy one of these for my iPhone 15 PM. And now on sale at Amazon for $69.99! The price and having to remove the case on the original BB was a dealbreaker.
I mean, I was so shocked when I saw the number of subscribers that you have. The video is great, it's clean and your voice sounds like you're made for that, you gained a subsciber aha
Why would anyone game with a case that has the overheating issue iPhone has with gaming? Phone gets hot and the screen dims. I think The biggest priority these gaming controller companies need to have is adding a cooling system to their controllers to help the phone cool to run better while gaming with their controller.
I Bought An Otterbox Case For My IPhone 15 Pro Max But It Doesn’t Fit With This Controller Unfortunately & Now Need To Buy A Second Case But It Also Needs A Cooling System, Wireless Charging & Bluetooth Support For Use With PC
Wow, I purchased one of these 3 days ago and had no idea the 2nd generation existed. After checking my box I was sad to see that I indeed have the older model. Welp, I’ll be returning it tomorrow for the newer model. Removing the phone case certainly annoys me.
Actually there is a controller that is compatible with almost any case the flex vice and it’s awesome I have both and gave my backbone away cause it got tiring taking care off plus the vice as a better ergonomic feel
I have the first black Backbone controller and its the best controller I've ever owned for my iPhones. I've paired 8bitDo controllers and PlayStation controllers to my iPhones before, but none of them give you the complete all-in-one feel and control like the Backbone. Once you slap that baby on it feels like one solid unit, like you are holding a new handheld gaming console like a Switch Lite or PlayStation Vita. But I don't use it outside of the house since my version doesn't support cases. I'm very careful with my devices, but the one time I don't have a case on it outside is the time I'll drop my phone knowing my luck.
Didn't really know about the second gen version until Amazon had this on discount for black Friday😅 $69, definitely not a bad price and I've seen some people use it with the Fold 5 ( which is the phone I have at the moment).
Are the face buttons (circle crosse triangle square) as loud as those of the first gen ? I didn't liked their super clicky sound and i found they were a little too hard to press. Is there any difference ? Thanks
No, the buttons feel the same. Still very clicky like the 1st gen. I have another video coming out soon comparing it to another controller (GameSir G8 Galileo) where I’ll highlight that a little more.
There’s a list of compatible phone cases on the website: help.playbackbone.com/hc/en-us/articles/18306138828311-Which-cases-are-compatible-with-the-Backbone-One-2nd-Gen
@buybyetech can you show a video of you taking the original fittings out in order to put the adapters in? Not one video of anyone doing this available on YT so would be appreciated! Thanks
They should just offer an exchange with money on top, instead of money grab. The first gen wasnt bad but obviously a design flaw, why would anyone want to take off their case for gaming and put it back on again?
Yeah I mean other than the case thing there’s nothing wrong with the 1st Gen model, it works great, especially with the new iPhones as advertised. I was just disappointed because had I known there was a 2nd Gen version I would have obviously gotten that one instead. I wasn’t able to return the 1st Gen model I purchased so I wanted to make sure no one else fell in this boat if they wanted this. Thanks for the comment!
I bought the Gamevise flex just for this very reason. Turned out it still would not fit my phone case. Also turned out that phone would heat up so fast on demanding emulators. Also turned out it was the best controller to just slide one of the those phone cooling pads behind the phone. Bayonetta switch on s22 ultra kept phone cool no frame drops. So the game vise without case and a cooling fan best combo. Still like the back bone style but no way to install a fan.
Thank you so much for this video. I would’ve like to see more of the Gen 2 differences with the Gen 1. It seems the iPhone doesn’t sit angled anymore with those magnetic tips.
I actually don’t even use the magnetic adjustments at all for my 15 Pro Max and it’s like the perfect fit. And there isn’t any stress on the spring mechanism like there was on the Gen 1 version. The Gen 1 version will fit a 15 Pro Max fine but not with a case. I’ll try and put together maybe a Short noting some more differences between the two, thanks for the feedback!
I'm going through the same buyers remorse with the Galileo G8. I like it a lot better than the Backbone but it doesn't work with my case. The metal plug is too short with the case on to reach. And with any kind of extender, its too long to fit. And the case is a massive hassle to take the phone in and out of all the time. Geez :/
Great video! So I have a question about this new generation. For pro models (13,14 and 15pro) is necessary the adapter anymore? Im afraid that the controller bends due to the camera bump. I was thinking on getting it for Christmas and I’m further investigating 😂 Thanks! I’m subscribed now ✨
The 2nd Gen controller will only work with the iPhone 15 because it’s USB-C only. There isn’t a 2nd Gen Lightning version of the controller. No adapters are needed with the 2nd Gen controller because it comes with them in the box. Thanks for the sub!
The D-pad feels the exact same as the Gen 1 controller in my opinion. Backbone I know said they improved the D-pad with the Gen 2 controller but I can't really tell the difference. You can look up some teardown videos or iFixits teardown of the Gen 1 controller to maybe get an idea of what it uses but I'm not completely sure to be honest.
Appreciate you bringing attention to the magsafe controller adapters, didn't know they existed (traditional controller brackets don't fit on the center of the iphone without pressing the side buttons. I am not a fan of the Backbone's yearly app fee to use hardware we already own. Also the ergonomics on the grip and thumbsticks could be better (like the Nacon).
No problem! I think the fee is a little much too, you have to be a SERIOUS all in mobile gamer I think to really consider it, but it still works fine as a controller without the subscription. The MagSafe options were my go tos but I like the better portability of the Backbone controller, personally. Thanks for the comment!
Seems the 2nd gen is only USB-C or am i reading this wrong? Seems kinda lame that in order to get the new version you also need to have the newest iphone, if you are an Apple iphone user. Either way, I'm happy with my gen 1 and iphone 14 pro and will be for many years.
Yeah you’re reading it right, the 2nd Gen version right now is only USB-C. If you have an iPhone 14 Pro this wouldn’t work with it so you’re still good with the 1st Gen.
On Backbone's website they have a list of cases they've tested that work. I don't see the Quad Lock case but you can check to see if there's a comparable one on the list: help.playbackbone.com/hc/en-us/articles/18306138828311-Which-cases-are-compatible-with-the-Backbone-One-2nd-Gen-

They said they improved the d pad, were you able to tell the difference? I decided to order gen 2 after watching your review, I'm not a fan of console controller with a phone holder, it feels imbalance.
I honestly can't tell a difference between the D-pads. They feel the exact same to me. But I didn't really think there was anything necessarily wrong with the Gen 1 D-pad. So if they said they made it better then that's just more good news about this revision. Hope you enjoy the controller!
With respect specifically to Call of Duty Mobile, are the joystick controls similar to the Sony Dual Shock controllers? I’m concerned it may be different in terms of sensitivity. Seeking your advice. Thank you
The controller DOES support Call of Duty Mobile. The “design and look” of the PlayStation edition version is more about the colors and branding. The black version (the standard) one is the exact same in terms of the button layout and analog sticks placement. So the analog sticks are placed more like where the Switch Pro Controller and Xbox controller have theirs. If you’re looking for a more one to one feel of the DualSense controller I’d recommend just using a DualSense controller and something like the phone clips I showed in the video. A super slim phone should fit a Gen 1 model just fine. In the video I was showing that the Gen 1 does support a phone as big as my iPhone 15 Pro Max. It just won’t work WITH a case unless you get the Gen 2 version.
I believe theres a new sonic game that is exclusive to apple: Sonic Dream Team. So I think they are definitely trying to compete in the gaming space. I personally doubt they will succeed, but we'll see.

Backbone has a list of cases they've tested that work on their website. I don't have any really bulky cases so haven't been able to test that but if you remove both of the magnetic adapters you should be able to fit even bigger cases than the normal ones that more common. I have a link in the video description. If it doesn't send you the Australia page you should be able to order one from here: playbackbone.com/au/products/backbone-one-usb-c/
Fantastic video! I also own an iPhone 15 Pro Max, and this was precisely why I decided against purchasing the Backbone controller. I have one question, though: where did you acquire the second-generation Backbone? Online stores don't seem to mention "Generation 2" in their titles or descriptions.
I picked both up from my local Best Buy. You can tell the difference on the box by looking at the Android vs. Made for iPhone branding I showed in the video. I also linked to a Gen 2 version on Amazon. As long as you see Gen 2 in the description anywhere you buy online or look for the box differences like I showed in the video you should be good!
You can also be sure that it is Gen 2 version by looking at the apps displayed on the phone. If it has COD Warzone Mobile it is, for sure, the new version since it was not even announced when Gen 1 existed! :)
the poorly designed ribbon cable in the controllers main support bar. over time the wear and tear of putting it on your phone will eventually break this controller. the buttons will stop registering correctly and you will then need to ship it in for repair. i got a razer kishi v2 for my fix.
The Kishi v2 is a solid option. I like how they borrowed the collapsible design of the Backbone controller and added other features like the programmable buttons. I saw though that some features like the Nexus app for the controller isn’t compatible with the iPhone 15, it seems like the USB-C/Android version isn’t fully made yet to support the new USB-C iPhones. They should do what Backbone did and refine the USB-C model. They should also NOT do what Backbone did and not tell everyone about it if they do make it even better. Thanks for the comment!
For $100 more ill pick up the PS Portal. The quality of the PS remote play on an iphone just isnt that great. Not to mention, adaptive triggers and better controller and wont get interrupted by calls and notifications.
I mean that only matters if you have a PS5. But the thing about the PS5 portal that I hate is that you can’t use regular Bluetooth or aux headphones when playing games
I already have the first gen, and I'm not a fan of it... Too clicky for my taste. I much rather play with my Gamevice Flex. I would consider buying a new generation of the backbone, if they make it with the USB - C port on the left side (for foldable phones), and they put actual buttons, rather than those mouse like clickers l
The Backbone app says it only supports PUBG via remote play. So doesn’t look like it supports the mobile version of the game from the App Store (I’m using an iPhone).
Today (11/8/2023) I saw Backbone sent an email about it's 2023 holiday line-up and it looks like they are finally making it clear that there is an updated 2nd generation version of the controller. So it should be easier to pick up the 2nd generation with less confusion now.
If it fits a OtterBox, it will fit anything
Will lightning come out second gen?
Never mind. Their site says “At this time, our case-compatible (2nd Gen) controller is USB-C only.”
Wow I was literally about to buy a V1 because I had no idea about this! This deserves more views! Thank you!
Thanks for watching and for the comment! Glad I was able to help.
I really wish they made one with the back open so you could put a fan cooler on your phone
Thanks Mario! Great video. I just ran into this same situation. Luckily I am able to return my gen 1 backbone. However, they should market their gen 2 model for consumers looking to purchase this product specially for iPhone 15.
They also claim you can use it with you pc/Mac but don’t tell you that the feature is locked behind their backbone+ membership 🙄🙄
Omg what a stupid decision
In the official web site there are the differences between the free version and the plus. But yeah It’s kinda frustrating that is a paid version feature🫤
On android you don't need backbone+

Thanks for the comment and the sub! I really appreciate it!
Problem with the PS Portal is it’s just a screen, it doesn’t do anything else -unlike a phone. And $200 is steep for what it is.
Thank goodness I waited to buy one of these for my iPhone 15 PM. And now on sale at Amazon for $69.99! The price and having to remove the case on the original BB was a dealbreaker.
I purchased mine directly from backbone website wich is also on sale 69.99

Thanks for confirming about the case compatibility, I was actually debating whether to get the Backbone V2 or not depending on that.
Better get the Gamevice Flex

Hey Mario great review thank you. Im waiting for my second generation Backbone one and will be my first .

Only exclusive to USB-C.

Yes, the white version is styled after the PS5 controller but they have a traditional black version that has the more common A,B,X,Y button layout.
With respect specifically to Call of Duty Mobile, are the joystick controls similar to the Sony Dual Shock controllers? I’m concerned it may be different in terms of sensitivity. Seeking your advice. Thank you
