There isn't anything I enjoy more than repurposing something someone else has thrown out. Or WATCHING someone repurpose something that was thrown out/discarded and making something beautiful from it. How satisfying!
A great quote from Mr Steve Ramsey: Put the bad side against the wall;) you killed it man. Like your work. Like your style. Love your attitude/outlook.
From the start of the video, I was thinking poplar. Love that build, Matt. Goes to show even garbage wood can be turned into piece of art. Excellent job!
Just started my woodworking journey and happened upon your videos. Pretty easy to see why so many other youtubers reference you in their videos. Great videos, highly entertaining, and informative, especially for a novice that doesn't have thousands of dollars worth of tools. Really appreciate everything you're doing!
Really appreciate full build content completed with basic tools and affordable (or free) materials complete with the mistakes. I recently spent a great deal of time on a graduation present with the graduates initials routed into the wood. Got one of the letters wrong on initials. Recovered. Learned much. Thanks
I travel with work for months at a time during the spring and fall. When I'm not traveling for work I'm off to do whatever I want. I found your channel while working this spring and saved a bunch of your videos. I've been wanting to find something to do during my time off and you have inspired me to do some woodworking.
Love your work and the fact you always help educate hobbyists. Other channels do their best to hide the dimensions and angles, etc, lol. I believe most people will buy plans if they like it and want to replicate the piece, or use the plans and slightly modify them. Thank you.
We're In a travel trailer for now and rent dirt & hookups. The man he has a bench like this, super old. I think he just turned 73 or 74 & like you he remembers it from way back I'm getting my stuff together, had to move 1150 miles to get away from a bad situation. I, also, love pallets. I plan to rebuild this chair like your doing. Keep it up. Jonesy NW ARIZONA
It probably makes a lot of us woodworkers feel better when you don’t edit a mistake. Thank you , I have a project for this week buying your plans and some wood filler 👍🏻😀
Matthew, I remember many episodes of New Yankee Workshop with Norm Abram starting a project with old reclaimed wood. Sometimes it was from old barns, one of the This Old House projects, logs that were at the bottom of rivers…. And it was just beautiful material once cleaned up. Of course, Nom could take any wood and turn it into something wonderful!
In 1987, an 80 year old lady wanted me to make some new rockers and replace the seat, on a double rocker just like this one. thought it was neat started building and selling at craft shows and at our shop. Still make and sell them.
Matthew, you inspired me! Repurposing wood has been my mantra for a long time and this little porch rocker really caught my attention. My grandparents in Nebraska had one very similar and your project brought back memories of home. Your plans are amazing, the attention to detail, the full-sized templates - well worth the cost! Thank you.
Matthew, I always enjoy your content. I even mentioned you as I was showing how I distressed a birdhouse for Mother's Day. But, I really like how you took something distressed and made it "new" in this one. Awesome! Thank you as always!
This rocker is great! I have a lot of 1 x scrapwood of different lengths and I think I may just have enough to try and make one. If I have enough, I may try to make a single rocker to go along with it, too. Thanks for this lovely idea!
Wow wow wow. Such a beautiful job. Please also refinish the old bench to match, it would sand and stain up so lovely. Then you’d have two. I’m currently making an Adirondack chair out of old 2x3s I’d taken off a sofa base I’d added to help my mum get out of it and stop kids toys and pupper hair going underneath. Also made a fenced play area in our garden out of 4x4s from heavy duty pallets. Milled down into 2 inch x 1/2 inch slats and painted them with a different rainbow colour. Always get inspired watching your videos ❤️
That was cool! I was ready to chuck that piece of lumber away. I enjoy watching your videos, very inspirational for certain. Thank you for giving us ideas to add our own little spin on things to make.
I'm not new to woodworking but don't have a lot of experience and it's been a long time since I did any woodwork. Almost a beginner. Been watching your videos and finding them very valuable. Using the old chunk of wood to make the double rocker turned out really nice. I have quite a bit of old wood boards, most have been out in the weather for years. Decided to do something with them rather than firewood. Sanded a couple down with 50 grit sandpaper on a hand held belt sander and nice surprise, they were cedar. I made a couple phone stands that look pretty nice. Still have most of the two pieces left for some other things to make. Thanks for the informative videos and the inspiration.
Matthew... I have to come clean... I watch many videos on wood builds dreaming about creating the build... however rad your builds are, I come here not only to watch the build, because it doesn't matter what you're building. i just come to listen to you talk.... it's calming and the accent just, gets me. I'm from Northern California, we don't have cool accents. it's like listening to Raylan in Justified 🫶
Bahaha... Well ty. And I have to come clean... I actually try to lighten my accent when I record so people can understand what I'm saying. And I think that's the first time anyone has said my accent is cool. But again, thanks! Oh an Justified took place in Eastern Kentucky... I'm not too far away on the West side.
Love the build! I've often wondered how you can do all the measuring & cutting while narrating without making a bunch of mistakes. I was building a little table while talking to my son, big mistake! Well, two mistakes were made. 😂 Luckily, I caught them in time to fix prior to the glue setting. According to an old time woodworking buddy, it's the mistakes that remind us we aren't perfect, but also challenges us to fix without wasting wood. You handled it like a champ!!!😁
I'm working on a shed that is built for free out of wood that I brought home from work over the years (framer for about 30 years)...beam cutoffs and old pergolas we have torn down. I am using only wood that is rotting from being in the yard for 8-10 years. I'm making the decay a feature and using timber pieces so that it won't rot in my lifetime. Sheated with ¾" plywood, this shed is built like a tank that looks like it's beaten to death. Everything is pre-weathered.
My son, before he moved, had a buddy drop off 40+ pallets. Now I try to get them apart and want to make things that my wife or neighbors will use. A couple of benches seem like magic! Another great video/guide for 'build it as you wanna'. Very nicely presented (again).
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking it reminds me of artists taking a block of granite and revealing a statue. It's very inspiring. Especially when you show the human side of it as well instead of editing to perfection for lack of a better term and thank you for showcasing it all.
As Matt Outlaw says We're not building clocks! I have a large chuck of lightered pine looking at me. How many board feet of wood did hou use? Wild guess is ok!
And that busted TV and split dresser are the coolest freaking pieces I've ever seen. Do the upper drawers actually function where the dresser splits in half? I've always wondered
Dang Mathew! Are you paying the editor so much that you having to cut the budget with rotten wood?? lol. JK! That almost looked like a railroad crosstie but wasn’t sure from the angle. That was an awesome video and love the oops in the video because everyone makes mistakes. Your absolutely correct on how making mistakes makes you learn and how to best problem solve to correct it is a challenge!! Damn good job!!
I have a question, once you made the diamond shape for the diamond why wouldnt you stack the boards together to cut out the shape? Fyi legitimately curious if that would be a legit way to do it im a very poor woodworker and cant make anything square lol. Im trying hard to learn.
There isn't anything I enjoy more than repurposing something someone else has thrown out. Or WATCHING someone repurpose something that was thrown out/discarded and making something beautiful from it. How satisfying!
Great idea! Reclaiming a piece of wood hat most people would throw out, and reproducing an heirloom piece of yard furniture is such a good concept!
