You can use a lighter to heat the outer slide without worrying about the lacquer so long as you don't overheat the slide. Just warm, not hot! I get my mallets through one of several instrument supply companies. They are rawhide mallets that improve with use!
I imagine that once the penetrating oil doesn't work on my trumpet (which obviously isn't a tuba), do you think a lighter of some sort would work without removing the lacquer? I won't do it unless I hear from you. Also, Dr. Tuba, where do you get these soft mallets? What are they called? Thanks for posting this!
