I was gonna start off saying the same thing except all I know about this game led me to believe I could see one player pee on another. I clicked. Same starting point, different path but we both ended up in the same spot. Wish the world would follow suit.
Thats not even remotely true. Video game tournaments had been going on since the 80s. During the 90s, fighting game tourneys specifically were going on all over the US, Japan, and Mexico. The only difference is now this stuff is streamed, but yeah, it has been going on since the 80s. Nintendo, Sega, Blockbuster, Midway, Atari, SNK, Capcom etc all held events often, both small and large.
@@ConfusionDistortion um hello knuckle head, try finding a primal rage tournament at that time without sponsors and paying for your travel. Go ahead Mr. Name me a tournament you went to for this game?
I absolutely cannot believe that I'm seeing this with my own eyes. Primal Rage was a HUGE part of my teeth cutting experience in the mid 90s. I still play this game and I NEVER EVER thought I'd get to see a tournament. THANK you for this.
Technically, it's not claymation, it's stop-motion animation. All of the models were hand-made stop-motion puppets, crafted from both clay and injected rubber mold over a metal armature skeleton, basically large, articulated toy models that they animated all of the moves with by hand. They are so, so fucking cool looking and detailed, too. They worked so hard on this game and I'm so glad people haven't forgotten about it. Glad I got to see my favorites Talon and Vertigo in tournament, though I'm not surprised Sauron is so represented given how ungodly strong he is. Edit: Backwards compatibility and perfect port emulation of this game is almost goddamn impossible given the nature of the copy protection the developers used on it originally. Not even they know how to get past it, which is why seeing an actual tournament of this game is like seeing a Unicorn in real life.
I mean they do deserve credit but the game was essentially unfinished. They were supposed to have necrosan be the boss in the end but he wasn't because of time.
@@licentiousdreams Yes it is, but claymation is called that because the outer layer is soft, moldable clay over top of a traditional stop-motion armature. (Think of the clay as a squishy layer on the surface that you can change with your fingers, to shape the animation even more.) Primal Rage uses more traditional stop-motion, which is more of a rubber "toy" that you can manipulate (it never loses it's original form no matter how much you bend it).
Last year or so, someone on reddit posted footage of a perfectly emulated port of Primal Rage. It seems they had gotten past the copy protection issue.
I would like to see more retro fighters like this played in tournaments. Like pre-MvC2. Games that never got the tournament treatment and weren’t really played competitively outside of the local arcade environment. It’s interesting to see this game played at a high level.
I really hope there's a next time someday. This was incredibly fun to play and the sudden death was only the icing on the cake! Easily the best match I've ever had in a top 8.
Just finished watching the entire thing. Made me happy that a gem of a game, under appreciated but also necessary in the FGC, made it to CB in pro play. Also it was phenomenal seeing 2 brothers in competition. Both are experts of their craft. 😊

Thanks for doing the commentary and showing this cult classic some much deserved love. I too am in my 40's and I couldn't wait to play this machine every time my dad would take me to the arcade.
It warms my heart when underrated fighting game gems like Primal Rage finally get some love in big tournaments. Some type of Primal Rage reboot would be an interesting project to be announced. Not sure who holds the rights to the Primal Rage IP now but hey, make it happen!

It's not easy to find a competitive footage of this game. The decision to make special move inputs attacks first followed by directions makes it much more interesting than I initially thought it was going to be, because it forces players to commit much like SF3's parries.
Can't believe this game is still in played in a tournament setting. I'm glad though. Shame the 2nd game didn't come out back then. Could have been a game changer honestly. Vertigo for life!
Omg I never thought I would see a Primal Rage tournament, much less one in 2023! I loved Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2, but I fell head over heels in love with this game when it first came out in '94 and have been a fan since. Thank you for posting this Tampa. My favorites were the apes Blizzard and Chaos, but I've since learned Vertigo was my girl - she's deadly in an experienced players hands, as you see here. When playing Primal Rage, the trick is to master the Tiger (hop) jump. It allows you to apply more pressure on opponents. With Vertigo, her dizzy and teleport moves combined with the Tiger Jump can be used to deadly effect. I was bummed this vertigo player was not able to fully complete his devastating combo by teleporting after the crouching low power and getting the last hits to connect. That would have been soo badass. Each character has 3 fatalities some more gruesome than others and a couple that are just stupid lol.
It's a shame that Primal Rage 2 never was completed. It had even more new mechanics than Primal Rage had. I wonder who owns the Primal Rage IP? We should have a remake or sequel of the game. Perhaps, even complete Primal Rage 2.
If Primal Rage had the success like MK, Street fighter and Tekken, imagine King Kong, Godzilla Scar King, George, Ralph and Lizzie (Rampage) as guest characters 🤔
