What made AR RAHMAN say okay to the script? What would be his first impression of youngster like you when you met him and vice versa?

For Ayalaan 2 would your approach in music creation with ARR change, while presenting the script and explaining the song situations?

I think, ARR is the only music composer who used vocals as instruments, Yes his music overpowered the lyrics as well as singers.

Unfortunately I have to say this but if India was into Arts and music that much and the politicians were really intellectuals who paid attention to non hindi languages, he would have already received it. Unfortunate for him that our politicians are useless. He is already our bharat ratna.

exactly he said it.. music is not just vocal and lyrics... the whole sound design is the music... And I worship Rahman for that bravery. No other composer of his time had that guts to place music and sounds before vocal..

Will agree that ARR's music has at least in old days overshadowed vocals and lyrics at numerous times. Often it's lyrics/vocals that were hard to hear, other times the lyrics were just so bad (e.g. Latka and Telephone Dhun from Hindustani). Recent example of hard to hear lyrics was Ishq Mitaye (Chamkila) where there are a few times where I am still not sure what Mohit Chauhan says. Other such examples are Ranjha Ranjha (Raavan), Dola Dola (Dil Hi Dil Main), Khawaja Mere Khawaja (Jodhaa-Akbar), Kaise Mujhe (Ghajini), Zehreela Pyar (Daud), Rampage (Pipa), ans female part in Parwana (Pipa).

Of this entire episode, I liked the teaser of the next episode towards the end comparing the two stalwarts of Bollywood music, ARR and RDB. Will ✍️ reserve comments for that next week.
However, the whole talk of Rahman’s music overpowering lyrics is definitely not done with any intention to sabotage lyrics or singers efforts. Rahman’s music is already a one man show and he doesn’t need to resort to such tactics to let his music overshadow others contributions. That said, his music many times elevated both the singers and the lyrics (even when stupid lyrics are written) while equally overpowering in impact.
As Shyam Benegal said in one of the earlier episodes, his music has overpowering qualities which to his own surprise has pulled him towards working with ARR and it is this overpowering quality of his music, be it in Bgms or songs that actually gave them a great recall value as per the words of Mr. Bengal.
Though ARRs original sensibilities are more of the tune than lyrics, there were also times when he have more space to lyrics or singers voices as per the script demands. His music overpowering happened mostly for his commercial outings and certain dance numbers but when the lyrics are of utmost importance he made sure they were also heard no matter the grandeur of his incredible orchestra that could easily overpower them!

Absolutely just listen to background theme of Bombay & Roja in fact Alaipayuthey background score. This whole debate on how music is incomplete without lyrics is absolutely nonsense. Full credit to all great lyricists who wrote great songs but great music doesn't always require lyrics. Yaani One of the best musician who does grand concerts at historical places released his albums just based on instrumentals and they are very good.

Great composers like Naushad Saab never used tunes to make lyrics, except few songs less than 10 may be .that's why their songs of that time had the poetic and literary quality ..for AR Rahman no literary quality in his songs.. because he makes tune first.

    • @kalunaga1582

Not always...but even if the tune is made ...it's just a tune but the process of composing the song goes on until the end not before the lyrics

@@narresnair1154 ARR have good ideas .but his tunes is just with help of electronics..with out electronics and computer he would never established..
And he do not give any importance to lyrics, just make tunes and lyricist needs to use words to fit his abnormal tunes .Javed Akhtar explain this in an interview..about lagaan movies abnormal words for songs .
On the other hand the songs of Naushad Saab, Ravi, etc etc had great literary quality.. because the lyrics were written first. The lyrics of AR Rahman is like Mustafa don't worry
      Or oorvasi take it easy
      Or mukkala muqabla

I partially agree with you, Hisham. While his tunes might not be very deep, he incorporates raagas into his compositions and blends them with technological sounds, percussions, and synth pads to create impressive music. It's quite subjective. For example, "Thirupachi Aruvale" is a song depicting a rural situation, but the modern sounds make it more engaging especially those pads, and the sound quality is outstanding, thanks to technology. As for the lyrics, that's a matter of debate. Personally, I admire Rahman for his music above all. Cheers!

He broke the barriers and reached every nuke and corner of India (even across the countries). Moment when you asked what's so special about Vande mataram itself shows your musical taste 🙏

I love ARR the most musically and admire MSV and Ilayaraja too. But to admire one you need not degrade the other. Respect them for their talent. Not for the emotion you have on your favourite.

Each person connects to different level and mode of music, just because you like someone else's music, doesn't mean ARR music is just screaming. No one else in the world could produce some sounds and music and layers that ARR did in his career. Most of his songs are so soulful that it moves us in many ways. It's not a joke that apart from getting many accolades like Oscar's, Grammy, Berkeley University also honoured him with honorary doctorate!
