Linux also got me into actually learning about computers. The Arch install process blew my mind the first time; taking an OS running from a usb stick, then partitioning and installing everything on a disk, then `chroot`ing into that disk's root partition which is mounted inside the already running OS. It's insane. I'm really enjoying your videos BTW.

There are so many moronic TH-camrs who post videos about trying Linux who never give it enough time to learn and become proficient then turn around and say bad things about it, that it's refreshing to see your video. You took the right approach, stuck with it, learned and now are proficient. Beautiful. For many years, since I heard of the word "Linux" when I was too young to think really logically, I watched some videos that mentioned Linux as stupid, and took it at face value. I did not consider it as a serious operating system. Many years later, when I was in my last year in high school, I was watching Mutahar's videos on Linux and decided to give it a serious try, and I was instantly hooked. My wonderful i386 with math coprocessor could not be used to his full potential (simply at least) with DOS and Windows3.1. Only the new Linux could give full potential before 32 bits Windows NT. Only the first 640k of RAM was directly available for computing and I had a full 1 Mb of RAM on my then top notch computer. So I moved to Linux for a memory issue too. ;-) And yes, I'm an old fart.

Try to run Termux on an Android device. Then you know it's running Linux! Plug in a keyboard via the USB-C/micro port and you've got a full console! I don't know if this comment is appropriate, but I was just amazed that it works so well, and not just for ssh-ing into other network attached devices, but also being able to install/remove/update the packages inside Termux, like using apt, with pkg! 🤩

      @reyalicea หลายเดือนก่อน

@@rkan2 Yes, Android is based on the Linux kernel. Here are some key details:
      1. Linux Foundation Connection
      - Android uses the Linux kernel as its core operating system foundation
      - Google adapted the Linux kernel to work specifically for mobile devices and smartphones
      2. Technical Details
      - Android uses a modified version of the Linux kernel
      - The kernel provides core system services like memory management, process management, device drivers, and security
      3. Open Source Nature
      - Like Linux, Android is open-source
      - The Linux kernel forms the base layer of the Android operating system
      - Google adds its own middleware, libraries, and application framework on top of the Linux kernel
      4. Differences from Traditional Linux
      - While based on Linux, Android's kernel is customized for mobile devices
      - It includes specific optimizations for battery life, touchscreen interfaces, and mobile hardware
      - The user interface and application ecosystem are very different from traditional desktop Linux distributions
      5. Ongoing Development
      - Android continues to incorporate updates and improvements from the Linux kernel
      - Google works closely with the Linux community to integrate new kernel features
So in summary, Android is definitively a Linux-based operating system, though with significant mobile-specific modifications from a standard Linux distribution.

Encouraging. I went from Macbook to my first windows machine, 2014 Razer Blade with the GTX1060. It was fine but man did the battery not last.. In 2016 I started experimenting with Linux Mint as my first Linux experience. It was mostly fine, and I jumped between Pop_OS and Mint for a few years. Battery life was improved greatly. Last year I moved to the Lenovo Yoga 9 with the touchscreen, etc and stayed on Windows for a bit. The forest and the overall landscape looks just exactly how the nature looks around here, though it's literally the opposite side of the globe (it's western parts of Russia, seashores of the Baltic sea). Which made me think - how curious is that, that people can be so distant and yet in so many ways connected: be it pinetrees, rain, admiring arts, enjoying music, or just using Linux! Also started with Ubuntu many years ago, and also due to bluescreened Windows (I think in my case XP). I'm an old man. I got a Commodore 64 for my tenth birthday. It was so much easier to figure out and master! I knew assembler by the age of 13. A PC was, and is, so much more complex. Yeah, I also found that Linux is much more "forgiving" to memory problems. And I never liked Gnome! I liked KDE from the first getgo of using Linux. Mh, when I tried out Arch I also found the installation to be cryptic and something difficult to master - so I went the Manjaro route. And from there I went to one of the other variants of Arch, CachyOS.
Glad you got a chance to start using Linux early! It's so much easier to learn then. Back in 1998 I just decided to use it, no matter what, just to learn. You just have to jump into it.
Where ever this was filmed, it looks a lot like Norway!

That's some good story tellin'. Sounds very similar to me in the 90's learning DOS, editing config.sys and autoexec.bat files because 4 MB of RAM wasn't enough to run a certain program. Now that I've fully migrated to Linux, I feel like that 20-something kid again, starting over from square one, learning my OS inside and out.

Cozy video and good story :D I got into linux because I'm very curious when it comes to tech, as a young teen I wanted to try out Ubuntu just because it was different from Windows Vista and I was bored. I tried for a while but eventually went back to windows. Years later some friends and I wanted to setup a minecraft server, noone knew what we were doing but I went in a tried. Dived in and learned some linux along the way, as the host we rented the VPS from ran CentOS and I got the minecraft server up and running. Now I have a raspberrypi (for pi-hole and syncthing) and a laptop running linux. My main desktop I switch between windows and linux, depending on what I want to do. I appreciate your videos :)

A spark of interest for Linux popped out of nowhere for me back in the Fall, and I've done a lot ever since.
I'm currently using EndeavourOS at the moment, but I've been using an old laptop to distro-hop and check other distros. One thing I always done since I started was manually partitioning during installation, because it feels nice to configure things to the way you like it.

People obviously have varying degrees of aptitude for, and interest in, this kind of stuff, but I actually think this kind of courage is the main thing that holds a lot of people back.

I used it for a couple of years on Arch after I got better at Linux, but eventually, I dropped Linux entirely when I bought a really powerful PC and stayed with Windows for a while.
After 4 years of using Windows only, I tried Fedora as my server OS for the first time. Now my love is GNOME. I remember that I didn’t like GNOME in my teenage years, but now I’m very much in love with it.

I got curious about Linux in high school because I was feeling nostalgic for a more command line driven experience. This was right around 2000 and I was using Windows 98 at the time. Managed to get mandrake downloaded and installed but had no idea what I was doing. Back to Windows for a few years. Fast forward to college and a few guys in information services were part of a local Linux users group. They sponsored an install fest and I had an extra computer to let them put suse on. A year later someone turned me on to Ubuntu. Now, I've hopped all over the place but still tend to gravitate back to Debian or Ubuntu based distros.

I have the same journey as you it seems but I didn't download my Mandrake. I bought a boxed copy at Walmart for $20. I also have pretty much gravitated to Debian based distros. Ubuntu, Mint, and Debian. Debian 12 was a HUGE improvement from years past with the inclusion of non-free-firmware. A few years ago I bought my first home server and have been tinkering with proxmox, truenas, LXC containers, docker, portainer, self hosting. Super fun stuff.

A couple years ago, I fully switched to Linux. I do NOT run any Windows OS anymore (thank you GNU/Linux!). I still have a lot to learn, but it's a good learning experience. Happy Thanksgiving to you, Bread! Take care!

I also got one of those CD's of ubuntu in the mail. That was back when I was distro hopping once a month. I would download a distro and run it for one month and put it on a list of 'Keep' or 'Toss'. I got the CD in the mail and installed it on my computer. IF it DIDN"T have that sh!tty brown color, it might have lasted more than 3 days on my hard drive! I hate that color and when the Purple color (14?) of ubuntu came out. YIKES! One good thing about ubuntu was it helped me recover a Windows users password. I was rewarded quite well for that!

Why I started using Linux in 2017 is a W10 update that borked my HP sleekbook. It wouldn't restart or shut down and a hard reset didn't fix it and since I always wanted to try Linux this was the perfect opportunity to do so and I did. Started with Peppermint 8, liked it and never have used Windows again. Current daily driver is MX Linux Xfce. Quick, stable and easy to use. Install it, make it your own and start using it.

I just had a slow laptop at the time, and Linux made it usable because it's lightweight. And then distro hopping started. That was the spark for my curiosity and my tinkering soul. Since then, for 15 years or a bit more, I have mainly used Linux. There have been two fallbacks to Windows that couldn't keep me for more than a year. So first I had to make some scripts and run tests before actually installing Arch as I would be in a lot of trouble if I just broke my machine (im having money issues ig, not me specifically but the whole country SLK). Exact reason for my switch is on Windows 10 one day I put laptop to sleep to go to shops, got back, tried to wake it up. It didn’t. Switch it off on the power button then switched it back on again. It started doing updates. Before I left I had WiFi disabled and set up stuff to make sure updates don’t happen when I’m using it. My device isn’t capable of Windows 11, so I’d need to switch for security purposes in the long run anyway.
I made copy of all my files, tried Linux Mint on live USB for a few mins then installed. Kept using it for about a month then saw a video about KDE 6 on TheLinuxExperiment and wanted to try it for myself, so when to KDE Neon and stuck to it for about a week (because of infrequent stability issues), distributed hopped for a few days to find a distribution that is more stable and uses more current packages, eventually disabled secure boot and installed Tuxedo OS 3 stuck to it ever since. Upgraded to Tuxedo OS (from Tuxedo OS 3) only a few days ago

Its weird to hear this because I was an IT admin for a local university and got very old very fast trying to keep all the windows servers going. Every update on a server was very stressful not knowing if the darn thing would reboot again without errors (10,000 students would not be happy). I could not take it after 20 years. Since I retired I ditched Windows the first hour I got home and never looked back. I used a Chromebook for a while and I was shocked to find I could reset the machine to original clean slate, in 2 minutes...log back in and EVERYTHING was right where I left it. I then have used Linux mint and Ubuntu (both are 15 minute installs and EVERYTHING works) and I could not be happier to forget everything I leaned about MS Windows. I did have a MS certified Engineer's (MSCE) certification and needed it to keep things going...Now life is good without all that.

Probably for the same reasons as your dad: it's a decent, dependable distro that doesn't get too experimental with their UI, and doesn't require me to tinker too much (if at all) to get things running. When I was a student, I loved to tinker with the PC, try out new stuff, invest time in learning about all sorts of things. But right now, I just need the computer to get out of the way so I can get things done. So yeah, it's not just for beginners; experienced users use it too.

I love and adore your fresh perspective. My Linux experience began in college with Unix around 1980. I got a job around 1986 in a purely Unix environment. Computing was a male dominated world. A lot of testosterones in that type of environment. I give thanks to all the women who were brave enough to break that wall down and are still doing so. During my cubicle days, In the belief that I should observe the dichotomy of the male/female experience in the workplace, I noticed one thing in particular that applies to both men and women, personal confidence is the key. I observed that women who were breaking into the computing field, were timid, and that overbearing males tended to try to take advantage of that. As time went on, women picked up confidence and the interaction between these overbearing males and these confident women became a source of amusement to me. I loved watching the alpha males have their egos hurt by these smart girls. It very much tickles me when I think back at all that. Keep up the good work and stay curious!
