    cd - is actually an alias to cd $OLDPWD. Also, pacman (and I believe yay as well) have a dedicated flag to do what the yes command does, it's - - no - confirm. This may be because using yes pegs a core to 100%, and they figured "well, people are going to do it anyways, might as well make it performant". When you brought up the shuf command, it reminded me of the C function strfry, which does essentially shuf - e. But while we're talking about random number generators, the shell variable SRANDOM references /dev/urandom, which is truly random (some caveats apply, but not unless you access the variable a few hundred times a minute, and even then they don't matter, even for cryptography). But to give you an actually new trick, the <( ) construct does what the $( ) construct does, but <( ) creates a file descriptor for commands that want an infile instead of an argument list. I've abused this several times in scripts. The simplest time was wc - w <(echo $something) when I wanted to know how many words were in a variable.

    Thank for this! it was hella useful! This keyboard shortcut sheet is AMAZING, although I wasn't aware you could rebind them either. Lol! Question...I’ve been thinking about the idea of a universal GUI for Linux that works seamlessly across all distributions without needing kernel modifications. The idea would be to use a modular, layered approach-like networking protocols-with a compatibility layer for detecting hardware and system specifics, middleware for managing app interactions (including tools like Wine or Proton for non-native apps), and integration with technologies like Wayland, Flatpak, or AppImage for adaptability. Based on your experience, do you think this kind of universal GUI is feasible, and what challenges might it face?

    • @BreadOnPenguins
      @BreadOnPenguins 3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      No problem! A universal GUI is pretty ambitious - it could be a game-changer for Linux adoption, if it essentially made the experience like Windows/Mac for the average user. I think there are technical (and social) barriers to that, at least right now. - All distributions is a high ask - you'd have to either support multiple package systems or bypass them entirely. Filesystem or init system variations could pose challenges as well. - The middleware concept seems interesting but could be a bit risky for security if non-native app sandboxing was done poorly. - For development, Linux programs are socially decentralized. Universal standards (for GUI behavior, for example) might require a lot of convincing for devs to buy into. That's a really interesting concept, got me thinking for a few there.. thanks for bringing it up!

    • @benjamindevoe8596
      @benjamindevoe8596 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@BreadOnPenguins Thanks for your thoughtful response! You're absolutely right that this idea is ambitious and comes with both technical and social challenges. Supporting multiple package systems or bypassing them would be one of the most complex hurdles, especially with the variety of tools like apt, yum, and pacman. One possible approach could involve creating backend modules tailored for each package manager, while presenting a unified front-end GUI for users, eliminating the need to directly interact with these tools. Filesystem and init system differences could be abstracted through a middleware layer that standardizes common operations without limiting advanced functionality for power users. The idea of a virtualized adapter acting as a middleware layer is central to this concept. Tools like libvirt or Docker could help achieve this by isolating the adapter from OS-specific dependencies while maintaining compatibility. A networking layer capable of auto-detection and self-configuration could drastically simplify connectivity for users, providing a true plug-and-play experience. This abstraction wouldn’t just address compatibility but could also streamline troubleshooting, making the system approachable even for non-technical users. On the GUI side, leveraging cross-platform frameworks like Qt or Electron offers a practical way to build a graphical overlay. This overlay could centralize common tasks-network setup, software installation, and updates-while hiding the complexities of configuration files or command-line tools. To address security concerns, strict sandboxing and permission-based access could safeguard the middleware from becoming a vulnerability. Convincing developers to adopt a universal standard is no small task, given the decentralized and diverse Linux community. However, integrating with existing workflows, rather than replacing them, could make the system more appealing. For example, offering an optional plugin architecture could allow developers to extend functionality or customize the experience for specific distributions without disrupting their current processes. I’m glad this concept sparked some thought-it’s a challenging but exciting area to explore. With careful optimization, security focus, and community buy-in, this could potentially bridge the gap for new users while respecting the flexibility that experienced users love about Linux. What do you think?
