Linux as a desktop environment is horrendous. If you're a kid, tinkering and endlessly debugging all its faults might seem cool and 1337, but once time becomes a precious commodity, you really just want to get shit done instead of hammering your head against a wall while trying to make trivial things work. That's one thing the Linux community hasn't understood yet - that a operating system in the context of personal computing needs to be frictionless for productivity - not an endless obstacle course.
"I kissed a girl and I liked it!" You kissed Ubuntu, but your first real Linux experience was Arch, you're good lol. Why you'd be a masochist and go with Arch as a noob is beyond me, but hey, I prefer FreeBSD over most Linux distros so I can't really talk lol. With FreeBSD, it's a minimal CLI install as well, the "ports" collection is where the idea for Arch's AUR came from I'm pretty sure, and if you configure what is commonly called "the Linuxulator" to run on startup, you get all the benefits of the extensive Library of Linux software (including Steam) with the sanity and simplicity of FreeBSD. If you want a fascinating research assignment, check out what makes FreeBSD different from all the different flavors of Linux. Not trying to convert you lol, I just thought it might interest you since FreeBSD is about as close as you can get in the BSD world to being a BSD version of Arch lol.
I think its control that they want. They need to know everything about you so they can manipulate you in to spending your cash on your interest to the highest paid advertiser of that interest. That said, the TH-cam algorithm showed me you because of my interest in linux so it works as a positive as well.
Long live Tux
!! Sick music on your channel
@ thank youuu!<3
Linux would have had me and kept me but for two issues. First was it's support for applications, like Photoshop and loads of others, yeh yeh I know about Gnome but as I just said there are loads of others which Windows supports but Linux does not. The other is the need not only to install a base program but also to install a chain, often quite a long one, of dependencies. My own experience being that sometimes dependencies have errors! End result is the base program will never run or even install...
Good thoughts, think I agree. I've always just liked....learning. I've bounced around so many things throughout my life just because I kinda feel pulled toward trying things or just learning about something new. It's really fulfilling even if it amounts to being mostly useless in 1000 things at this point. xD
"Bloatware detected!!" - jk
I've used Linux since 1995 (back when you had to compile your own Red Hat kernel modules) and have distro-hopped many times. Since 5 years ago, I finally just stuck with Linux Mint on my desktop as everything just works. I can't remember the last time I had to use the command line, probably a couple of years ago. 👍🏻 On my laptop, I test out other distros, the last three being FydeOS, Nobara and Bazzite. I have absolutely no need to downgrade by going back to Windoze. Enjoy your Linux journey! 👍🏻😎
I access the majority of channels that I watch using RSS and Newsboat. With it's TUI interface, I don't have to deal with patronising clickbait thumbnails, I get a single line of text on the screen that lets me make a decision as to whether or not the video is worth watching. It also blocks ads because it's RSS and not HTTPS, if a content creator puts inline ads in place then you don't have the benefit of extensions like SponsorBlock but it is easy to use the cursor arrows in mpv to scroll through the "unnecessary" parts easily. (For those that don't know, Newsboat will launch videos in an external video player of ones' choice.)
awesome to see more folks joining linux

This is adorable. You do you :-) PS: love the soldering iron burns. Very artsy.
if its free, YOU may be the product.
I've been looking into Neocities. Do you have any thoughts on the indie web?
Adblock for everything, I have BlockTube with 67 keywords filtering videos for TH-cam, and I have the same amount filtering Reddit and have 150+ subreddits blocked, Sponsorblock to stop in-video ads for TH-cam, Unhook extension to remove Shorts, Search Fixer for TH-cam to remove dillusional results, Brave on Mobile to remove ads and filter keywords, cracked spotify APK etc I am at my wits end with media on the internet now, I am having to filter so... so much shit AND NO ONE ELSE DOES THIS, people just use these services as they are designed, it's INSANE.
For those that don't know, ALL memory sticks have a lifetime warrantee. If your memory is damaged in any shape way or form, every company will accept the damaged memory, and they will send you a brand new one in replacement for it. Just thought people should know this information. 🥰 Btw, I am a Linux user as my daily driver. I use Vanilla Debian with KDE.
Due to YT algorithms I rarely subscribe to a channel. I think that would limit me even more in my options and what there is to offer. I am happy to comment, but I hit the subscribe button very sparingly.
Have you tried Zorin OS yet? I think it is the best distro for beginners :) Very polished and I love the Zorin Appearance feature!
hi, I completely agree with you!!! regarding websites, last month I saw someone using a tip while searching on Google. this trick involves adding before:some_year to the search query:), try something like: some_query_lalala... before:2010
Even Pornhub respects us more than TH-cam does
yup. taking care of business
I was trying to do this for plugging and unplugging my laptop a couple days ago, ran into a few problems but managed to figure it out
I hate it so much. I am so tired.
Funnily, I got recommended your videos because of doom scrolling about linux stuff. If it's not for that, you weren't followed by many.
I like your explanation of Dead Internet Theory.
All you say goes way beyond just the internet. Great vid. Cheers!
What kind of Bread, is the question lol. Hi.
Hey Bread! If you allow me a little bit of purely constructional critique, that you can just ignore of course, I couldn't help it while be watching this particular episode. Not sure if it was the same before, I never payed attention. And of course when you shoot outdoors, this is not the case. But when you shoot indoors, your walls and ceiling ringing, the reverberation of the room does spoil the quality and comprehension of the video you make. There may be very simple quick solutions actually. I wouldn't recommend you going down the bottomless rabbit hole of the acoustic treatment (there's a lot you'll find online) - you won't achieve professional studio sound anyway, and that's not needed. But a couple of simple clever moves can actually improve it significantly! I mean, few pillows in the corners, some canvas paintings on the walls in place of mirrors, maybe curtains, maybe heavy rug under your feet and turn that microphone a little lower. If you have a wardrobe with doors, you could just open it while you are shooting. Stuff like that - I mean, it will cost nothing but a little time. The spot from where you record and the angle of the microphone stand can become a game changer, if you figure out. That's it. And this is only because I'm looking forward to enjoying more of your content 😊 And that's because I choose to, not because TH-cam decided that for me, no...R-right? PS The sweater is phenomenal!
Bread, the TH-cam examples are most of all quite bad, tbh. I agree on the shorts part (I hate them too, and it's annoying that you can only temporarly disable them) but the rest being seen as a dark pattern or forcing you it's just bollocks. So, first of all, YT doesn't want (or shouldn't want) for every single user to watch as much as possbile. There are those weirdos (myself included) who paid for YT Premium. Guess what, there are no ads in this case and the payment from the user to Google is fixed, so YT would surely like for me to only spend a little amount of time on YT, as the more I watch, the more I'm using their servers and bandwidth, increasing their cost to service me. It's true that watching more I might leave comments which might make others stay more on YT, or I might decide to become a member for a channel or to give super thanks or super chats. But guess what ? I don't give super thanks or super chats (well, I gave 2, about $30 in total, in over a decade of heavy YT usage). Yet I still get the same algorithm. The algorithm has its flaws, but on the broad, wide picture, it's benefiting both YT/Google and the users. I did, over the time, found a lot of interesting stuff on YT that I did not search for. Of course there's a lot of trash too, and most of it it's very obvious, so it's easy to stay clear from. But these are minor parts (actually more like exceptions) of the algorithm, as it's clear they're sponsored. And then there's the YT homepage. That it only shows 20 or so videos. WTflyingF would you like it to show to you ? Sorry for sounding impolite, but it's so obvious to me that that's the normal thing to show, and I find it a stretch to say that this specifically is a dark pattern. I enter YT and there's a selection of new videos from my subscriptions and some other videos very related to some other videos I watched (really, the algorithm is quite good at this, I've been at times watching a creator for like an year until I decided it's time to subscribe. Would've certainly forgotten to check them if it wasn't for the algorithm). I don't see how it can show to you millions of clips at once, so you no longer feel that the choice is made for you. Or I don't see why it would be better to not show anything at all. You can still search for what you want/need. Maybe there's another option/idea that I'm missing. The videos are a (quite nice) convenience. You might say it's the same as the endless scrolling, but I disagree, you can (and I've done many times) NOT engage with any video shown. The shorts have that stupid autoplay feature that makes you miss having a pause and ponder what to do next. And that stupid lack of a seek bar so you can jump back. Well, videos have autoplay (which is very annyoing) too, but at least you can disable it. I do agree on most other parts of the video though. On topic of dark patterns, there's a gigantic amount of methods, details and examples.
My hot tip for everyone: Go get yourself a book. A real, physical one - printed paper, the classic kind. Best to grab it from a local store, the library, a public book swap, or even an old bookstore. Doesn’t matter, just make the effort and get out of the house. Seriously, take the time. Then grab yourself some hot cocoa or tea, snuggle up on your favoirite spot on the couch with a blanket, and dive deep into whatever you've gotten your hands on. You’ll love it. Promise :D
I will NOT touch the grass
Speaking of, this comment has been brought to you by RAID SHADOW VOLUMES!! :D
I agree with you 💯.. Ive started using Linux Mint, been uisng it about a month or so now. Im really liking the software, still have quite a bit to learn though. Side note, that is a awesome shirt youre wearing, really like the different cloth patterns.. Keep up the good work! 🙂🙂

great counter to fork bomb is to have limits.conf set

I remember when youtube's search was usable. Just can't find anything lol. 5 results, then SHORTS, then a couple more results, then RECOMMENDED or YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE again...
I can't help but think that the number of people waking up to the dark patterns of TH-cam is why they're going to go under. Truthfully, with the number of times they've censored my posts, I kind of hope it happens. I just hope that whatever platform takes their place, they aren't nearly so censorious.
full support to fellow arch users.
