  • “The Treasure of Abbot Thomas” is a ghost story by M.R. James, first published in 1904 as part of his collection “Ghost Stories of an Antiquary.” The story follows Mr. Somerton, a medieval history scholar who uncovers a coded message in a stained glass window while researching at an abbey library. This message leads him on a hunt for the hidden treasure of Abbot Thomas, a disgraced abbot known to have concealed a significant amount of gold somewhere in the monastery.
Somerton’s investigation takes him to Germany, where the message suggests the treasure is located. Despite the warnings embedded within the riddles and the ominous history surrounding the abbot’s treasure, Somerton presses on. His search culminates in a terrifying encounter with the guardian spirit of the treasure, which haunts him until he agrees to return the gold to its original hiding place.
The tale is renowned for its atmospheric tension and the chilling realization that some secrets are better left undiscovered. It’s a classic example of James’s ability to weave scholarly knowledge into his narratives, creating an intellectually engaging and deeply unsettling story.
