Rusty 1970's Tonka Jeep Tow Truck Restoration

- Hey everyone and welcome back to another restoration. In today's video I am restoring a classic early 70's Tonka Jeep Tow Truck! The truck really wasn't terrible to begin with. Faded, rusty, but complete! The Windshield did have a few minor cracks but they weren't big enough to ruin the finished product. The biggest challenge I ran into were the wheels. These old solid plastic wheels are tough to separate without cracking the plastic. It is especially difficult to separate the rim from the tire. Because of this I decided to paint the wheels by hand to match the freshly powdered coated body. Hope you all enjoy!

What a nice restoration! Nice to see the ambulance too, i keep one of these and the farm truck. Love them 😊
Great job. We just don’t see toys like these anymore. My son loved the fire truck 🚒
MAN!!! Have I Seen Some Really Cool Old Jeeps Around Since I was A Kid!!! But This One Just Rolled Out Of The Car Dealership And Stayed They're For Well Over 40 Years!!! Looks That Way Though Joe, Wow Man Best Truck Resurrection I Ever Did See!!! VERY VERY WELL DONE DUDE!!!
Nice. Good to go for another 50 years!! 👍🏻👍🏻
and there goes the ambulance 😎👍 awesome tow truck
The kids will be proud. 👌🏻👍🏻🙂☺️
I wish they still made toys like this
Nicely done
I remember having a Jeep tow truck.
After watching you disassemble these Tonka toys. I woul like to see a old video of the machines they used to put them together at the factory....
Nice restore!!!
I received the wagon version of this Tonka toy for Xmas in 1970. I still have the picture my mom took of me holding it Xmas morning with a big smile on my face. Mine was yellow though.
Great outcome😁
Nice work
I love the sound of all the parts clicking into place.
Beautiful
Hi bro 👋👋👋 very good restoration Tonka Jeep Tow Truck
I LOVED my Tonkas... and thoroughly enjoyed this video!
Excellent work!
excellent job friend 🍺👍
would love to send you some of mine to redo. Great work, thanks for sharing.

Really nice looking restoration Joe. Thanks for saving another tonka. Makes me want to restore some of mine.
Just Beautiful.
Great job! Thanks!
Most beautiful... and nice to see the ambulance again!
Glorious. Thumbs up.
Looks sharp,
another great restoration. looks brand new 💯
Превосходная работа. 👏👍
Nice resto!!
You did a good job of restoring it to it’s former glory, with I have to say one criticism and that is the painting of the wheels. They, I am sorry to say don’t look right.
Looks just as it did for some child on Christmas morning many years ago
Nothing like a fresh restoration to spruce these up!
where can I get a rivet clamp and rivets like you use?
Very Nice!
Congratulations on another excellent restoration!
Joe? Have you tried doing the.. Hydroperoxide and a plastic contender and just leaving the yellowed parts outside for like a few hours?
Good job, thanks
Nice work. The only let down are the yellowed headlights.
Great! Please consider getting a replacement tailgate though.
Tonka seems to have made a lot of jeep based toys! I remember jeep pickups being j-10 or j-20 comanches
Yes that's correct. I worked at the Jeep dealership starting in 1988 till 2002 and there were still a few J10 and J20's around in the early 1990's. They never produced many of them compared to the 10's of thousands of Wagoners they made every year until they cancelled them in 1991. It was still running a 4bbl Motorcraft carburetor in 1991.
Hey Joe. do you film with go-pro?
Do a quick Tonka restoration search and you will find every single restore channel, lol.
I just subscribed to 3 channels just from the recommendations.
👏👏👏👏👏👍👍
Another triumph.
personally I would have done something different than all white with white wheels. Oh to clean rather than paint the plastic wheels, mix some baking soda with hydrogen peroxide a paste consistency. put in a baggie and let it set overnight. They clean up good, no painting required, tho I probably would paint the hub caps chrome or silver.
Why do people have to step on peoples nuts about what they did wrong why in the hell can people just say what a beautiful job you did the wheels look great and the rest of the truck is wonderfull! How hard is that to say something positive ?"
@@madmanmechanic8847 How about you mind your own business? If you read the first word, it says personally. I'm stating MY taste. And giving a tip while I'm at it. If I want your opinion, I'll tell you what it is. Shut the hell up and mind your own. You are probably one these idiots that thinks everything is hunky dory and our kids should be taught that everyone's special and everyone's a winner... what are you some Californian Libinazi?
by the way, a Libinazi is a so called liberal that is only liberal as long as you agree with them, if not, they come on like Nazi Gestapo.
Add a orange light bulb on top like on a towtruck so it would look even more realistic
good work! but maybe it's time to change/clean the sandblaster's glass? :D best, Alessandro
Back in the late 1950s, my aunt in the USA sent us some Tonka pick ups for Xmas. They had to be "Mighty" to survive our depredations -but they held up pretty well.
Does Tonka sell the Pintonka tool you used? I asked for one at the hardware store....
I had the Tonka Jeep Camper aka Mini-Tonka Camper.
think mine light blue ?
I believe Jeep referee to their 60s and 70s Pickups as Gladiators...
Do you do resterations for individuals.
Kinda of a fan of tow trucks.. What can I say?
Jeep made a great pickup truck in the 1960's, then they cancelled it. I understand Jeep will soon sell a pickup line. I might buy one.
They so well a pickup line, at least one pickup truck it's called the jeep gladiator. Hope I helped you in the slightest way and good luck buying one!
Who knows you might just stumble across an old Tonka police car.
It was so hard to watch him paint those wheels without taping them off, or just taking the rubber wheel part off.
Why do people have to step on peoples nuts about what they did wrong why in the hell can people just say what a beautiful job you did the wheels look great and the rest of the truck is wonderfull! How hard is that to say something positive ?"
Roger Hockemier lmfao, dude I'm not hating on his work at all, obviously it came out incredible. It looks so good that's not what I'm saying in any way, shape, or form. The whole point I was trying to make is that when he didn't tape it or take the rubber wheels off I got nervous because it's incredibly East my to make a mistake or get paint on the wheels or something. He is great at what he does, and he DIDNT GET PAINT anywhere he did a great job, I'm simply saying it made me nervous. Idk how you got that out of what I said.
****incredibly easy to make a
Camera is little too close :(
No eres un artista.
Lost me at painting the wheels.

What’s the matter with the sandblasting screen?!😭
