  • Living with the 2018 Suzuki GSXR1000R - In Depth Review: I've been living with Suzuki's flagship sports-bike for a couple of weeks now and I've got a good feel for what the bike is all about - both the positive and negative points. As for the exhaust, you could almost think Suzuki did that as their solution for Euro4. Basically "we threw this huge can on to get it to pass Euro4, but made it really easy to swap out for aftermarket *wink wink, nudge nudge*"

      Good luck finding a street legal euro4 aftermarket exhaust without any power and much more important torque losses for this bike. There isn't any according to tests by independent reviewers (dont rely on power curves by the manufacturers... and if you do - see if the measurement was taken with the baffle out , as this renders the can illegal)

      YES. It's better than having a huge catalytic converter under the bike and need to be there unless you get the full exhaust system. With Suzuki, you just get a slip on.

    I just bought a new gsxr1000r having traded my mt10sp tractor in .Got 165 mls out of a tank whilst taking it home @ 70 mph average .Never test rode one as i have had a few gsxr;s in the past and its riding position is fine but the seat is mega hard and hopefully it will soften up .No rear hugger is a bummer as decent ones aint cheap @ over £200 .Bonus was that my radiator guard from my mt 10 fitted with a little fettling and also the front fork protectors also fitted .Whilst fitting a tail tidy i used the original number plate light from the bike to save cutting any wires just needed to elongate the holes .Yoshi slip on fitted just for looks and its not too loud either with or without the baffle in place .The dash is not as good as the mtsp but i hardly ever used the electronic suspension once i had set it up .Engine agree is super smooth and in mode A the power delivery is great mental fast .Good value for money bike compaired to the Ducati or Yam R1/M.

    I absolutely love that inverted white on black dash. I'm not sure why manufacturers are insisting on colorful bright screens when this works just as well and is better looking that standard black on white LCD too. This and Africa Twin's dash for example - just lovely.

    Great review TMF. Imo the big Gixxer is the optimum blend of power, performance and value for money in the litre sports category. Compare price to others, the money you’d save on this beast would pay for a Yoshi pipe, re-map and a few Trackdays still leaving money to spare. It’s everyday usability also makes it a winner in my book 👍

    Great in depth review as always, I was surprised at your insurance quote as you are a very experienced rider with full no claims. My insurance for the Harley (valued at £18,500) for the 2nd yr was about just under 300quid & that included breakdown & recovery. They took 1yr no claims in to account, they wouldn't recognise my 18yr no claim in Oz ---buggers. All the best 👍👍😎

    Really like the coverage you've given this. One point I was curious about and the main reason I'm looking at this particular video, is the variable valve timing. Do you feel that having that capability was an asset that helped at those lower speeds and with the mileage. I've seen a few pieces of information on this and I'm really shocked that more manufacturers aren't doing something similar. It makes a lot of sense to me. I just don't know if it's a gimmick or truly advantageous. It'd be nice to see if Suzuki continues to expand on this through their other classes of bikes.

    As ever a good objective review. Fully agree with the "lack of character" aspect of the bike, and for me inline 4 cyl bikes in general. Nice engines, smooth and plenty of power (usually too much for the road at the top end) but I just dislike inline 4s at 60-80 ish MPH where you spend most of your time, the constant, busy noise, both engine and exhaust really gets on my nerves, so I would disagree with the touring aspect. I recently had a BMW S1000R when my own bike was in for a service, I'm sure most would say it's a great bike, and for the most part I understand why, but 2 minutes into the ride and on a dual carriageway I just couldn't wait to give it back, I just rode it straight home and straight back to the dealer, no wish to ride it further than I had to.

    Good review TMF
    The Suzuki is keyed as you point out but I don't really understand what's wrong with keyless that you mention, as do other comments here. I've had several keyless bikes including my latest, a GS1200, and none have been a problem. Quite the reverse, it's an advantage in that you can start and stop the bike, and lock the steering if you wish and operate the fuel cap, all without taking the key out of your pocket. That is is a lot more convenient than having to use a key for all these operations. So for example on a day ride somewhere, from taking the bike out of the garage to returning it later, with a stop for a meal or whatever and a fill up on the route, I never once have to access the fob. The only time I need to, on the GS, is to access the panniers if I have them on the bike.
    Agreed that it's not exactly a major hassle to use a key, and my Street Scrambler has one, but personally I see little reason to dislike keyless, I find it welcome. In any case it's becoming increasingly common on bikes and is quite common on cars now. Again, I've never had a problem with my keyless car.
    regards

    Nice review mate. We had a crazy hot summer in Sweden too, first summer with unrestricted license could not have been any better. Only thing was you had to go out riding at night because daytime was just scorching. But I digress, been watching your videos for the better part of a year and finally got around to subscribing. Also I watched your MT 09 SP review and I'm this close to getting one, I have a Yamaha FZ6N S2 2009 which as you can guess is my first bike, and while it sounds great with the LeoVince exhaust and is easy to ride, after having tested a friend of mines mt09 I just miss the torque so much you know, without having to rev the hell out of it. inline-4 is fun at high RPM but I can't be doing +8k RPM all the time right. :)

What doesnt make sense is you said “after trying a friends MT09, I just miss the torque” - what do you mean you miss the torque..you said youre FZ6N is your first bike so is this the one you “miss the torque” or is the MT09 the one with more torque?

      What I meant was that after having a go at my mates MT09 and then hopping back onto my FZ6, I missed the torque from the MT09. I did eventually end up buying a MT09SP the very same year, probably not to long after I made that comment to be honest. Then I had a go at a MT10SP at the dealership whilst my bike was being serviced, so I've been lusting for one of those ever since. Maybe next year. :)

    It's so easy to take this exhaust and replace it with an aftermarket its just crazy,I prefer that than paying 900 pounds for a decat pipe for a r1

    Regarding fuel economy.
    You quoted some "MPG" numbers according to the display(?).
    Do you know if this is US-gallons, or British-gallons? (I hear they differ.)
    And did you ever check if what the bike displays is correct? (I notice my 2006 Ford Focus actually uses less than what the display says most of the time.)

    Love how your Speedo is blurred every time you open her up lol, I believe Suzuki are still offering a free aftermarket end-can exhaust with every new sale, that exhaust seriously put me off, the cost as well, you can get a BMW S1000RR M package for £16.5k, great vid, would you go buy one of these after riding it, the gixxer that is.

    Its nice but not sure I could own one of these as my only bike, built to go very fast. Euro 4 exhausts on most bikes look rubbish and get ripped off by owners and replaced, I do wonder if this will get clamped down on more in the future? After all what's the point of Euro 4 if you can just rip it all off?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer

    • @mrvwbug4423
      @mrvwbug4423 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might not be strictly enforced in the UK, but you MUST have all the Euro4 stuff on the bike to pass TUV in Germany, so you can only use a Euro4 homologated aftermarket exhaust in Germany. Not an issue in the US, I don't think any US state does smog tests on bikes, not even California (technically you need a CARB EO number on any aftermarket exhaust in California, but it isn't strictly enforced).

    The simple dash and standard key ingnition are so indicative of Suzuki's design and engineering philosophy. They make bikes that will still be running properly in 5, 10 and probably a whole lot more years. Expensive fashionable items that don't enhance performance simply isn't for them. It's such a pity they never quite nail the looks!!

    Nice review,that exhaust system looks like it should be sticking out of a tractor. Lol . 45 mpg isn't bad for a liter bike it should improve with a few more miles on it. I'm getting 48 on my Kawasaki VN 2000 towing a camper trailer across the Canadian prairies this summer. 5200 miles in total.

    Suzuki makes a bike which has "everything everyone wants" and people go on about how it lacks character. What's a character?? R1M, or panigale can never beat a GSXR, that's CHARACTER

      @@TheMissendenFlyer you're saying that the Ducati 899 panigale can beat a GSXR 1000, and so can the R1M? I've seen many races with GSXR 1000 demolishing these 2

    Another in depth review but it lacked any evaluation of its raison d'etre: i.e. going bonkers!
    I don't know why everyone goes on about the silencer. Sure, it's ugly but that is obvious to anyone. There are plenty of aftermarket alternatives and I'd just make the one of my choice to be fitted by the dealer as a condition of sale.

    @themissendenflyer I test rode the 2017 model and found the handling to be a bit of a heave and couldn’t flick it around from side to side. What are your thoughts on handling of the 2018 model? I hear Suzuki have now made changes to the chassis on the newer models so I don’t know if this issue has been resolved?
    Thanks!

    What RPM does it sit at when it's travelling at 60 MPH in sixth gear? I have a GSX650F and it sits around 4,000 to 5,000. Traffic often flows a bit faster so it's common to be sitting at 5,500 RPM. It gets a buzzy after an hour or two of highway riding and I was curious if the bigger engine does away with this problem or whether it's still there.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude i have a gsxr750 and id never use 6th gear traveling at ~60mph..too low of an rpm...put it this way, breaking in my new gsxr750, i know that 6th gear at 7k rpm is roughly 90mph - BUT to ans your question (even tho its 2 yrs later) yes my bike gets LOUD/deep sounding after riding for a while whether its highway or main roads, its when the engine temp warms up higher and i have a RaceFit exhaust which gets loud as fuck 😉
