I think it's totally possible for it to be successful. I'd want to see new mechanics like ... An interesting thing to note about Twisted Metal Black with regards to the darker narrative. Since it was a darker story, most contestants who get their wish granted with no strings attached are those that have a malevolent desire. Junkyard for example, wishes to kill the man who stole his wife and so, he gets his wish. Outlaw on the other hand gets punished for actively wishing to help others. I found this detail incredibly fascinating.
Well, what else would happen in Needles' mind? Needles hates cops, feds, preachers, etc. It makes sense their endings showcase their demise as he would like it. The unhinged get their wish because it seems Needles appreciates petty revenge. And the evil get their wish, but nothing that outdoes Needles himself. Case in point is Warthog; who needs implants and surgery to achieve the homocidal tendencies that Needles has naturally. In Needles' mind he IS the greatest of all time.

2 other things worth pointing out about Twisted Metal Black. First, they put a lot of attention to the Instruction Book, it reads as the journal of one of the contestant complete with hand written notes and scribbled drawings. The other thing that still kinda impress me to this day is that the intro movie for all characters features an opening sequence where the camera travels from outside the asylum up to the door of their cell. But almost each character has this sequence edited in a different way that showcase the psyche of the character. Twisted Metal was the first game my dad bought when the Playstation came out and one of the first video games I remember playing....and probably the cause of my twisted, horror and slasher film loving mind I have today. Thank you David Jaffe for a badass childhood growing up with Twisted Metal!
You do a remarkable job of making things we already knew sound new and interesting. There are a few things wrong - like stating Jaffe was an employee at Singletrac - he wasn't. I also understand that while Jaffe thinks that dodging was a happy accident, he was one member of a huge team. Later he doesn't seem to know the game ran at 60 fps for example, which would have been a big deal for the team to make happen. He also has no idea about Warhawk as playable. Other people were in charge of tweaking car and weapon characteristics - that wasn't Jaffe. They almost assuredly knew a great deal of what they were doing.
40:00 "I'm having a problem with Bloody Mary's story, there's child on child violence." David Jaffe: "...what the fuck is child on child violence" LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I've been waiting for this since the first part dropped! Black scared me so bad as a kid I couldn't play it for a few weeks after I got it, and it still gives me the heebie jeebies.
TM came out the year after I was born, and my dad was a huge fan. Some of my earliest memories are asking dad to put in the cheat codes to unlock minion and sweet tooth before he left for work, and I'd leave the PS1 on all day so I could play as my favorite characters. TM was a huge part of my life growing up, thanks for this vid.
Thank you Ghenry for making an amazing retrospective on a truly unique franchise, And thank you Mr Jaffe for creating a games series that's something you wanted to make your way. You are definitely one of the few people in the game industry that truly inspire others to create their own works such as Kojima (Metal Gear, Death Stranding) and Hennig (Legacy of Kane, Uncharted).
I distinctly remember getting angry at that and rantings about it in a TH-camrs comment section when that cutscenes played. That man no longer has comments active
Twisted Metal Black was, and always will be, my favorite. I only had a mild interest in the series up to that point, but the characters and the story drew me in, and I remember playing it fervently until I'd finished it with all the characters. I don't know that such a title could ever be done again in today's environment. Jaffe made a fan of me with that game, and cemented it with the God of War series.
Twisted Metal, particularly Black, would make an excellent dark animated film. Something like the Batman: The Animated Series or Samurai Jack style. Maybe even something more Eastern-influenced.
Damn, sad to hear that Jaffe thinks no one gives a shit about TM in Europe. Because I still remember falling in love with this game in my childhood. And only 10 years later, in 2013 or so, I found out that this game had cutscenes. Fucking awesome ones by the way. Too bad I had no opportunity to watch them back in the day, because I think I would literally shit my pants. P.S. Was quite surprised to hear the TimeSplitters theme on the background.
I love that Jaffe actually addresses Small Brawl here. There was no mention of if in Dark Past, and very limited development info online. Hearing about what could have been is very satisfying and gives me hope for a sequel someday. Thank you for posting this.
If he were to ever go back to making like a more low-down, low budget Twisted Metal game, it'd probably be a legitimate shot at the Small Brawl concept. I'd be interested in that, so long as they were allowed to do what they'd like.
I used to think that idea was awful, also being that I hate BR games mostly, but then I started thinking about it. It would be like playing a 32 man (TM PS3) match on a huge map with only 1 life. In other words, probably the only BR game I would legit play.
TM was the series I grew up on, even if my first one was 4. I remember playing Small Brawl as a child everyday. Then I saw a new one came out on PS2 when my mom took me to rent a game for the weekend. I popped it in and was immediately scared. Then I started Sweet Tooth’s story and it scared me so much I had to pick a new character. I went to Brimstone next and the shot of him with red eyes and a demonic voice gave me nightmares. My mom returned it the next day lol. Since then I’ve played every game in the series to death. Twisted Metal will always be one of my favorite series of all time.
I didn’t even realized you posted the first part. I still remember when we first talked about you doing it during one of Jaffe’s stream. Good work as always my guy
Black is prolly my favorite TM game right next to TM2. The fact the game is Dark as all hell, and it's in Needles Kane's twisted head. And Marcus Kane is the sane part trying to fight the Darkside of his mind.
I didn't grow up with Twisted Metal, but I tried out Black recently and was awestruck by it's quality and presentation. Usually franchises going more edgy turns out bad, but Jaffe and Incog did it so right it's hard to believe. If I were a journalist I would've called TM:B The Dark Knight of video games. Fantastic job.
What a lovely surprise. I commented on the last video about a day or so ago on wanting the next part of this. After seeing it was up today, I couldn't help but think that Calypso heard my wish and granted it. This one was quite interesting indeed and I cannot wait for the third and final part to this Retrospective.
I think the semi-animation of the cutscenes is actually superior for getting in a character's headspace and it helps further develop the dreamy, hazy quality of the whole game. EDIT: "Woah, hold on to your fucking potatoes, Doctor Jones!" This guy's a trip. lmao
Liked the video before it even started lol. I absolutely love this game series, as well as the series you are doing that’s covering the franchise. Thank you so much for bringing an amazing game series to the forefront
Dave Jaffe is a creative powerhouse! Every team needs someone like that, to elevate a project. Those types aren't always the nicest, like a little dictator.
Dude, you have convinced me to buy every game in the series and play them. I’ve always been pretty familiar with them but never played anything outside of the first game.
I know 1 and 2 are downloadable on PS3, and the PS4 port of TM Black is excellent. And, while 2012's online servers are shut off, I bet you can find a copy of it for cheap and the single player/local multiplayer is still a blast.
I vividly remember looking up Preacher's cutscenes for Black back then. I never got a hold of the game, but the darker tone definitely was a far cry from what I expected from the series.
Damn. Awesome video. That hour flew by. I watched part 1 not too long ago and subscribed in hopes for this part soon, so I was excited to see it pop up today. Excited for part 3! Thanks for this series! Shout outs to Papa Jaffe for contributing his parts as well. Very cool of him.
If this were remade today we would get 90% of the characters and levels locked behind a paywall. And a lot of development time would go towards the mandatory battle royale mode.
Actually if this was remade today.you would get a similar result to Shadow Of The Colossus 2018/Demon's Souls 2020 with nothing being locked behind a paywall nor have developers waste time on adding a pointless tacked on mode thanks entirely to Twisted Metal being a Sony Interactive Entertainment/PlayStation IP
Fuck yea!! been waiting for this!! ;D great job all around ghenry! your commentaries aswell as david jaffe's are so interesting & awesome to listen too, i really appreciate all the time and effort you put into these retrospectives for all the twisted metal fans to enjoy, can't wait for part 3 aswell! ;DD
I loved TM2 when it first came out. My parents had gotten it shortly after it came out from a family friend. But i will say that TM Black was my favorite of the series, it fits the feel of what TM seemed to me was missing. Loved them both but tm black was definitely better to me. Loved the stories so much, i constantly go back and watch them all the time.
@@chesspunk489 crazy right? so Twisted Metal 2012 wasn't the first Twisted Metal to get a health bonus when you ran over a driver. but you have to be quick because sometimes it won't work.
31:30 Played lots of Twisted Metal 2 and 4 as a kid. Saw Twisted Metal Black on cover of a Finnish gaming magazine and friend got it when he got himself a PS2. Played through the story mode and left puzzled. It wasn't until the dawn of youtube I learned that there were cutscenes for all the characters.
Twisted Metal, 2, Black and the 2012 version are all masterpieces to me with a shitload of nostalgia. Parts 1 and 2 I played through with nearly all characters and a shitload of split screen versus. Two was an amazing improvement. They all had thier own feel. I definately viewed the series as a kind of fighting game. Playing versus in splitscreen really had alot of depth, even though you could see the other persons screen. Black was an awesome introduction to the PS2 along with Grand Theft Auto 3. Really enjoyed DMC on a smaller scale as well. Great launch period. Unfortunately the 2012 version didnt seem to do that well. It didnt help that the online crashed for about 3 months , mid game, before it was finally fixed. Alot of players probably dropped off during that period. The online was one of my favorite online games , but after a brief period it became very hard to even get in a game, once it was finally fixed. Tons of replay with the singleplayer as well. The hardest setting was alot of fun. One of the games I want to see most on PS5 is another Twisted Metal. Not a cash in though. Small Brawl had a horrendous story, but I had some fun with it on emulation gameplay wise. The environments are cool since it makes small areas like a kitchen seem huge. No where near as good as the main entries but a fun game to playthrough. I recently went through on hard mode. The boss fights were not the highlight. Head On was one of the better unknown versions. The ps2 version has the most content. Id like to check out Rogue Trip Vacation 2012 again. I returned it years ago. Its made by the same company but I dont know who was involved. There is also a submarine combat game on PS1 by the same team. Not sure if that is any good. Forgot what its called.
The Mr. Grimm Black clip at the beginning just blew my mind concerning the "TM:Black is all in Marcus Kane's head" thing. The line "I think my mind bent so much, it snapped in two" makes so much sense, regarding the Sweet Tooth/Markus Kane dichotomy.
It was always so tragic that instead of having their life fixed, caused by whatever someone did, they just wanted revenge on whoever screwed them over...
Will never forget Twisted Metal Black being the flagship PS2 Summer of 2001 game playing on large promo screens at the food court in an up-scale Canadian local mall.
wiating for part 3! 😛 these 1st 2 videos are the best Twisted Metal videos i have watched. I had 1,2,3,4, Small Brawl, & Twisted Metal Black. sold them 😭 i regret my dection to sell them.
i was 5 years old playing twisted metal black it did gave me nightmares as a kid here and there its not surprising because twisted metal 1 was my first T rated game i ever played on PS1 when i playing on PS2 black was the first M rated game i played to this day i play the good twisted metal games
I think one of the major changes from the PSP version to the PS2 version of Head-On was the massive decrease in speed, something that probably contributed to some preferring the pace of the PSP version.
While I couldn't capture the footage myself, I played the PSP version again and it feels a tad slower to me. But I think that has to do with the fact that the framerate is much lower. Still great for its time and platform, though.
I bought my PS2 the day Twisted Metal Black was released!!! I loved every second of it! I was 19 and took it with me to college with me after my summer job! Maybe that's why my grades went to hell because then Silent Hill 2 and GTA3 came out and PS2 took over my homework and study time. 😉
I remember being obsessed with Twisted Metal growing up and wanting TW:Black but because I was 10 years old my mom wouldn't get it for me.. Thankfully I had a rascal of a brother who took my dad to walmart who was oblivious about the "M" rating and I got it for my 11th birthday. The title screen scared me shitless and I would try to skip it as fast as possible.
My parents were even more strict with m games in my early teen years in fact I only rented this game because the greatest hit copies which had black online had a t to m rating.
In my own fake movie trailer for Twisted Metal I tried to combine the darkness of Black with some of the more silly/action themes of previous games. That's why I love this franchise: it really embraces many different concepts!
18:23 I'm replaying Black right now, and honestly, yeah, I have to agree with you to some extent. I typically dislike comic book cutscenes for their lack of... Presentation. But in Black the animation and sounds are presented in such a way that even the stills come to life. I was honestly sickened to my stomach by the game because of the combined grotesqueness of the game's dark stylings: from the character bios, to the cutscenes, and the frantic gameplay with screams galore; I had to put it down and come back later. And that I did. Now I am having a great time trying to unlock Minion once again.
A little fun fact I'll always hold dear is that, as a European, it was Black that got me into modding consoles, back in around 2014 or so. On the PlayStation 3 Store, they had Black available, and upon buying it and realising it was the censored version, I was so annoyed that I spent the next week figuring out how to mod my PS3 just so that I could play the US version of Black on it. Good Times. Simpler times.
I bought my copy of Black day one, but couldn't play it cause I couldn't afford a PS2 at the time. lol Really seeing the first interviews pop up for Black at the time made me save my money to buy the system just to play it. Still have my copy as well.

And I'm glad you were able to grab the writer and let him break down how they made Twisted Metal Black. Thanks again. Edit: Oh and also nice touch with using music from Timesplitters Future Perfect! If you ever make a deep dive on that underrated masterpiece of a series you'll have at LEAST one constant viewer. Lol.

Anyone else wait a liftime for this video?
No. We all waited just a couple months, like you.
Luckily for me, these popped up as recommended and already had the 2nd video available. Eagerly awaiting the third video!
I just found Ghenry a couple days with his Suda stuff. So I didn't. Instant Gratification! :D
Never in a million years would I think I would hear the director or twisted metal talk about MR. FRICKEN MOSQUITO
40:00 "I'm having a problem with Bloody Mary's story, there's child on child violence."
David Jaffe: "...what the fuck is child on child violence"
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I've been waiting for this since the first part dropped! Black scared me so bad as a kid I couldn't play it for a few weeks after I got it, and it still gives me the heebie jeebies.
Dude this channel is so underrated. Deserves much more awareness
Thank you Ghenry for making an amazing retrospective on a truly unique franchise,
And thank you Mr Jaffe for creating a games series that's something you wanted to make your way. You are definitely one of the few people in the game industry that truly inspire others to create their own works such as Kojima (Metal Gear, Death Stranding) and Hennig (Legacy of Kane, Uncharted).
Agent stone got no scoped one shoot at about 500 meters with a handgun! Terrorist was mouse and keyboarding...
LMFAO
I distinctly remember getting angry at that and rantings about it in a TH-camrs comment section when that cutscenes played.
That man no longer has comments active
Twisted Metal Black was, and always will be, my favorite. I only had a mild interest in the series up to that point, but the characters and the story drew me in, and I remember playing it fervently until I'd finished it with all the characters. I don't know that such a title could ever be done again in today's environment. Jaffe made a fan of me with that game, and cemented it with the God of War series.
I really like your take this interview. it is awesome you got a interview with David Jaffe and I really look forward to seeing the third retrospective
The theme for TM: Black being the Rolling Stones song Paint it Black is still one of the best choices for music I've ever seen in any game
Twisted Metal, particularly Black, would make an excellent dark animated film. Something like the Batman: The Animated Series or Samurai Jack style. Maybe even something more Eastern-influenced.
"It's less cartoon-ish" he said over footage of the transforming ice cream truck.
I'd love to see that happen. I think that kind of humor and theme would still have an appeal today just as much as it did then.
If there was a game that's begging for battle royal..
TWISTED METAL!
I used to think that idea was awful, also being that I hate BR games mostly, but then I started thinking about it. It would be like playing a 32 man (TM PS3) match on a huge map with only 1 life. In other words, probably the only BR game I would legit play.
Addendum: Just not if they compromise the single player portion(s) and the story content. I was already burned by Epic disowning Save the World mode.
That's true.
Plus we’d have some sweet skins
Vahlok142 also the weapons in BR is just like TW on the floor.
Your sub count is criminal. Just spent the night going through your work...please keep it up!
I'll just say this about Twisted Metal 3, that soundtrack was intense!
I think the semi-animation of the cutscenes is actually superior for getting in a character's headspace and it helps further develop the dreamy, hazy quality of the whole game. EDIT: "Woah, hold on to your fucking potatoes, Doctor Jones!" This guy's a trip. lmao
I love this so much. I didn’t even know of the beta cutscenes. I’m gonna watch them after this.
I can’t wait for Harbor City!!
5:35 when he’s talking about scrapped content I see concept art in the back for a battle arena in NY with the Twin Towers lol
TM black was unbelievable, in 6th grade when this came out. Truly captivating
GhenryPerez
Heck yeah!!! I’ll get right on that! Thanks :)
Tm 2 and Tm black are definitely must plays
I vividly remember looking up Preacher's cutscenes for Black back then. I never got a hold of the game, but the darker tone definitely was a far cry from what I expected from the series.
Twisted Metal Black is the best one for sure. The feel and the controls of the game are just amazing! I still play it to this day.
*Three months in the nuthouse. It was the longest I had ever been confined.*
Good things come to those who subscribe and wait!
❤🚘💥
My problem with Twisted Metal 2012 was that it limited the characters… I really wanted the narratives to return. :’(
Kickass video, Loved hearing David talk about development, especially for black
I want a sequel to this game. Next console generation I want Twisted Metal Black 2 for the PS5.
Me too! I l'm still waiting for the next twisted metal game! They will be back!
I'm always more than happy to hear someone talk about Twisted Metal: Black for nearly an hour.
I bought Black recently since it was one of my childhood games and yes I played M rated games when I was like 4 and 5 years old
Fuck yea!! been waiting for this!! ;D great job all around ghenry! your commentaries aswell as david jaffe's are so interesting & awesome to listen too, i really appreciate all the time and effort you put into these retrospectives for all the twisted metal fans to enjoy, can't wait for part 3 aswell! ;DD
I loved TM2 when it first came out. My parents had gotten it shortly after it came out from a family friend. But i will say that TM Black was my favorite of the series, it fits the feel of what TM seemed to me was missing. Loved them both but tm black was definitely better to me. Loved the stories so much, i constantly go back and watch them all the time.
btw fun fact in twisted metal black when you destroy a vehicle and if you hit the driver you get some health back.
I did not know that.
@@chesspunk489 crazy right? so Twisted Metal 2012 wasn't the first Twisted Metal to get a health bonus when you ran over a driver. but you have to be quick because sometimes it won't work.
31:30
Played lots of Twisted Metal 2 and 4 as a kid.
Twisted metal black had some great backstories with characters tragic mr Grimm was one of my favorites
The Mr. Grimm Black clip at the beginning just blew my mind concerning the "TM:Black is all in Marcus Kane's head" thing. The line "I think my mind bent so much, it snapped in two" makes so much sense, regarding the Sweet Tooth/Markus Kane dichotomy.
Dollface (from black) is my favourite character in the entire series
The fact that you used the God Hand OST made me so glad I subbed
You should also talk about two other cancelled Twisted Metal projects for PS3
Wait 2 I only heard about twisted metal: apocalypse what was the other title?
@@CODEDNATOR the other cancelled twisted metal game for the ps3 was going to be called twisted metal revolution
Twisted Metal was battle royale before battle royale was even a thing!!
It was always so tragic that instead of having their life fixed, caused by whatever someone did, they just wanted revenge on whoever screwed them over...
Head-On was and still is my favorite entry in the series
Great theme tune, too
Will never forget Twisted Metal Black being the flagship PS2 Summer of 2001 game playing on large promo screens at the food court in an up-scale Canadian local mall.
You sir have won my sub awesome retrospective I've been waiting for a really good twisted metal one for a while
Thank you for taking the time to make this
wiating for part 3! 😛
these 1st 2 videos are the best Twisted Metal videos i have watched.
Thanks again for making these!
You could have asked for twisted metal 2. I think that's the best one, but black is pretty good too.
Great work on your retrospective. I'm thoroughly impressed and amazed. :)
In my own fake movie trailer for Twisted Metal I tried to combine the darkness of Black with some of the more silly/action themes of previous games. That's why I love this franchise: it really embraces many different concepts!
I remember playing black on my older bothers ps2 back in the day and that "vibe" has stuck with me ever since
18:23 I'm replaying Black right now, and honestly, yeah, I have to agree with you to some extent.
This was the first game I got on PS2. I was 11, how did I manage to get away playing this at such a young age?
A little fun fact I'll always hold dear is that, as a European, it was Black that got me into modding consoles, back in around 2014 or so. On the PlayStation 3 Store, they had Black available, and upon buying it and realising it was the censored version, I was so annoyed that I spent the next week figuring out how to mod my PS3 just so that I could play the US version of Black on it. Good Times. Simpler times.
Imagine a full twisted metal 2 or black remake god that would be nuts
I bought my copy of Black day one, but couldn't play it cause I couldn't afford a PS2 at the time. lol
Really seeing the first interviews pop up for Black at the time made me save my money to buy the system just to play it. Still have my copy as well.
This was AMAZING!! I'm brand new to this channel and this video is excellent on all levels. I'm not sure how this channel has so few subscribers, but you've earned a new one with this video alone. This series was great and REALLY seeing you deep dive into this was just. Wow. chef's kiss. Thanks for posting!
Lol.
2:19 the background song is from ShinMegamiTensei: Devil Summoner
4:45 God hand
I have an idea that, santa monica studio should bring back twisted metal black, like making the remake of it, that bring a new and improved graphics, making detail character, and maybe adding a few new character like twister, mr slam, crimson fury, 12 pak, etc. And i love to see this remake in next gen console, because the gaming industries in this time like to making a remake game like 2k with mafia definitive edition, capcom with resident evil 1,2,and 3 , square enix with final fantasy 7. I think that will be great idea to have a remake of twisted metal black
SIE Santa Monica Studio is not a good choice to do a remake their expertise lie elsewhere, just bring in the best in the entire industry Bluepoint Games to make it happen
I remember reading the tmb booklet and it gives you the impression that crazy 8 had ESP which is how he was able to “see” things even without his eyes
Yay! Thank You!
Was worth the wait but another 2 months for part 3
