      They all have unique animations, too, of which I found tend to be similar across most characters.
      If they do a flip, their going to jump. If they swing out first, it will be a get-up attack.
      If they just hop up, simple get up.
      And lastly pulling up (the character will not stand as they climb the ledge) shows they will roll.
      Looking for these can help you react faster.

    Some super basic tips that I've learned along the way...
    Aerials: Press Jump Button (Default X & Y) and Attack Button (Default A) to do a short hop aerial. Additionally pressing a direction will change the aerial attack type/direction. Experiment with this to get a feel for these types of attacks.
    Shields: Super important. Default button L or R. Use it constantly. It should be your go to button after most actions. You will start to pick up when to use it and when not to quickly as you play.
    Dodgeing: Default Shield button (L or R) + a Direction. Use this when you anticipate an attack or grab is coming so you can avoid the attack and potentially punish the miss. Note you can do an dodge in the air aswell by pressing shield or shield + Direction.
    Grabing: Default button Z. Use this when an opponent is shielding. Once grabbed press Z to strike them rappidly while you have them in place. Press a direction yo throw them. You can hold an opponent longer the higher % they are.
    Tilt attack vs Smash attack. In control settings switch your C-stick to tilt attacks. This will make your life much easier. Titlt attacks are fast attacks that can KO at high %. Smash attacks are slow attacks that can KO at moderate % depending on your character and opponents character. Experiment with both tilts and smashes to know how and when to use them. It's important to note that most smash attacks can be punished if you miss or your opponent fully blocks the attack. Most Titlt attacks when used properly wont be punishable even if you miss or are blocked.
    Last thing. Watch pros play the character you play. Watching what abilities they use and when, will help you figure out that characters optimal strengths and their weaknesses.
    But most importantly. Have fun and don't get discouraged. Try and friend online opponents that are good sports and are near your skill level. Setting up arenas is a great way to hone your skills quickly with frequent matches and a more positive match atmosphere.
    Hope this is helpful to someone. :)

      I'd say I'm a lower mid-level player (Idk where 3.4m - 4.4m GSP falls, but I'm in that range, some days I'll drop down, and other's I'll get a good streak and gain a bunch), and I'll admit that I don't use tilts nearly as often as I should. I also hardly ever grab. Probably have an average of 0.5 grabs per match. I know it's not good, I just can't ever pull it off, and when I do, it's wasted bc I don't react quick enough to know the best option.

      Tl;dr experience is the best teacher, smash ultimate is a lot like smash 4 and melee so find videos for those games.
      I highly recommend checking out videos for old smash games. They may have different advanced tech, but the same general rules apply through most all of the smash games. It's a 2d platform fighter series. Smash 4 for Wii u and 3ds has a lot of the same logic as ultimate. However, I recommend just playing online a lot. It's similar to how, no matter the skill of a martial artist, they'll never be a perfect fighter without ever being in a fight. You can spend all day in training mode, but you'll be surprisingly how much information you can learn, and how quickly, in online play. 6ou start to pick up on things. When you fight someone better than you, you definitely notice what stands out that makes them better. On top of that, as you get better, your global smash power rises and you fight better and better opponent's. When you get out of lower tier, you start getting whooped by guys in mid tier that do things that you don't.

    I easily fall under the “not nearly confident enough” category when it comes to offstage play. I may technically be the one with the advantage in that state, but you won’t fall to your death if you whiff something in neutral. So as stupid as it is, I usually just wait for the opponent to recover and hope I’ll be able to knock them off the stage again.

    2:55 It's a lot harder than you think to get precisely that close or notice that someone is precisely that close, let alone react within milliseconds to such a quick and tiny detail, let alone ALSO predict what an opponent will probably do next. In general, I think you underestimate the actual difficulty of "simple" things like rolling, spacing, and shield grabbing, and combos, even with what you call "noob misakes". Watching this video just makes me feel like I'm at a level even lower than whatever it is you call a newbie.

    • @LeBonkJordan
      @LeBonkJordan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jcmm99 The thing is, I'm interested in getting better at the game as a whole. This video is talking about getting better at 1v1 (sometimes 2v2) stock battles using a certain playstyle on only ~9% of the most boring and generic maps in the game with items and stage hazards turned off, meaning that the strategies the video talks about may only apply to the metagame that exists within that ruleset, and not the rest of the game.
      There's absolutely stuff I could improve on that's universal, like shielding, dodging, and probably teching, but ledge pressuring doesn't really matter that much if the stage I'm playing on doesn't have a ledge.

    • @jcmm99
      @jcmm99 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      IɴSɪmpʟeTermsJordaɴ this video was made more for those who want to improve in a purely competitive and technical aspect. If you want to play competitively, no items is essential. Same for stages that give each character equal chance

    • @LeBonkJordan
      @LeBonkJordan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@jcmm99 If those stages give each character an equal chance, then why are certain fighters more or less viable? Fighters like Samus are obviously not gonna do well on tiny stages like Battlefield. In my opinion, that's why Ultimate changed stage selection to take place before fighter selection.
      My point is that if you get too used to playing exclusively in "safe" stages with predictable conditions, you're gonna get thrown off by the rest of the stages' hazards. That's why I believe it's important to practice under as many different combinations of settings as possible in order to be ready for anything, not just what can happen in 1v1 3-stock Final Destination No Items -Fox only- fights.

    • @jcmm99
      @jcmm99 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IɴSɪmpʟeTermsJordaɴ you're missing the point that this is a video for those who want to improve competitively. That means playing under the competitive rulesets. Super epic sword character tip (marth, roy,)
    if someone shields your side-b, and if they dont expect it, you can use the down input version of dancing blade. the down version (or green, i guess) can apply more pressure and if your opponent parries the final hit of side-b (which some people will) the multiple hits of the finisher will hit them anyway, as they only parried the first hit. And if they do shield, it can often shield poke, which is pretty good.

    • @Chahol17
      @Chahol17 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Idk the tech but attacking back you can punish by just outspacing, tho I believe they will be ready to attack soon after as they are grounded, tho there's likely some lag there. If they climb without attack, they may be more agressive as they can come out with any move as you likely showed caution and kept distance. More lag/less invincibility possible here as they're normal attacks. As for jumping, you can try to juggle from that but look out for where they try to land and their next move. Overall, while the options appear strong due to invincibility/speed, they are also predictable as they only have three options, so learn the spacing and lag on these to find openings to punish.

      some characters are better at this than others, and each character has its own unique strategy which is why it's not gone into depth here. but for every character, the basic idea of prepositioning, laying traps, and being comfortable playing at, near, and beneath the actual ledge is how to get started. to get more into detail you need to go to a character specific guide because each character plays the ledge vastly different than others.

      Ah yes. I have recently dealt with a “Dark Pit Side B” person. But since I’m not pro or anything I can’t punish it EVERY time to try to get them to switch it up. My god it’s a pain. “I’m just spamming this because I gave up.” Really?! Like if you gave up you could have told me so I could go to items + chaos mode or something like that. But I feel that they just have no faith in improvement, not that they gave up.
      Now that I think about it, that’s kind of an issue with beginners and mid level. Low self esteem when it comes to what they think they can do. The best example being the fear of off stage play. When they feel just shit enough they just give up entirely when it comes to bettering themselves. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
      Idk how to motivate the special spammer. But there’s gotta be something right? Just thinking out loud here

      What helped with my friend in Melee times (Yoshi Jump + Down B) was just getting some more casuals/mediocre players together and him expierecing other´s playing, raging, tilting, smashing and sometimes downright rocking the game.

      This was literally me in Smash 4. I would be Counter spamming when I was starting to use FE characters as mains. First Lucina, then I really got bad with Corrin Counter spamming because of its range. I started getting punished hard for it, and initially I actually stayed away from playing FE characters altogether since I was scared about doing the same thing again. Three-quarters of the way through 4, I picked up Lucina again, and she became my main. I got much better about using Counter.
      In Ultimate I main Lucina and Link, with Fox and Cloud as secondaries. With Lucina I've pretty much fully learned to NOT Counter spam and now work it into my play style, only saving it as a mixup to either surprise kill or get my opponent off of me so I can plan my next move. When I'm Corrin in Ultimate and fall behind, I tend to get back into the Counter spamming habit a LOT, wheras when I fall behind w/ Lucina I don't roughly 95% of the time. It's a hard habit to break but I'm getting there.

    @BananaBoySSB So i need help with something related to this. I've been trying to get better at reading my opponent's tactics as i play, instead of focusing on my character (which is actually Yoshi, if that helps at all). It's been working to some degree. Im still new at it but Ive been able to do things like punish a fox that constantly goes for up tilt setups at low percent and side B approaches off the ledge when he's at disadvantage. My problem arises when I figure out what my opponent does. It's almost like my brain pinpoints a habit they have and then clicks into "Oh that's what I gotta do to punish this guy" mode. Take the up tilting fox, for example. He is constantly trying to get me in the air and get under me. I fell for it twice or so before i started preemptively nairing when he approached or down b if i was already in the air. Works great for the first stock or two, maybe the first match. But then my opponent adapts to my adaptation and I end up kind of lost and start reverting to bad habits of pressing too many buttons and throwing out unsafe options. That's not to say i can't re-adapt. But it takes me longer than i feel like it should and i lose sets because of it....so i guess my question to you is, what is your mentality in games in regards to reading your opponent? How do you tell when they've changed their playstyle to adapt to yours and that you need to approach the fight differently? Is there a way to predict your opponent changing their playstyle before they do so? Kind of a loaded question but I figured I'd ask another Yoshi main so that i might understand it better.

      @RanOutOfSpac 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I’m no professional player by any means (pretty trash tbh), but I want to toss in my 2 cents because I know exactly what you’re talking about. What you described is basically conditioning. That’s when you punish a player for doing something so they stop that and do something else. Technically, it’s a good thing. To answer your question on how to predict if the enemy will adapt to your adaptation, I find it best to analyze the player’s over all skill.
      A good player will be much more likely to adapt than a bad player would. If you’re at a tournament or are consistently fighting high level opponents, it’s safe to assume they will adapt to what you’re doing.
      That’s part of what the video suggests, to stay unpredictable so that your opponent can’t adapt to one strategy.
      Again my 2 cents, it doesn’t really stop me from getting bodied lol.

    • @poodychulak

      In this case, the opponent conditioned you first, then you conditioned them on your punish.
      People talk about neutral game in the sense of stage placement, but let's talk about it metaphysically. Your strategy was a reaction to an offensive, so before the opponent can aggress again, you should probably initiate an approach to put them on the defensive.
