  • A flight on Father's Day to Schaumburg, IL (06C), coming in over Midway airport and then along the shore of Lake Michigan with a great view of the beautiful skyline of Chicago.
    Schaumburg is just a few miles west of O'Hare International Airport, under the Class Bravo airspace. It has a very good restaurant on the field, "Pilot Pete's", which is popular with locals as well as pilots flying in from all over the Midwest. Their "World Famous Pot Roast" is to die for, and no, I did not get paid to say this. It's just THAT GOOD!

    Great video. You're making me home-sick for my home town of Schaumburg :). My 13 year-old step-son is in the early stages of pursuing his pilots license and is currently participating in the Young Eagles program out of HKY - Hickory, NC. I need to show him this since we've all enjoyed a number of great meals at Pilot Pete's and watching the airplanes and helicopters take-off and land there.

    Hey Martin, you brought back memories about the convenience the Meigs Airfield had to offer right downtown Chicago flew so many times there.in one of my visits included the witnessing of the Kellogg Corporate Jet crashing in to Lake Michigan ,in any case I think they closed it for security reasons.Once again thanks for sharing.

      Meigs Field... I flew into Meigs many times. "Closed for security reasons" isn't quite what it was, the mayor wanted it closed, and when he couldn't achieve that with legal means, well, he did it illegally and had the runway torn up unannounced, in the middle of the night. A real shame.

    Loved the video! I learned a lot about what it'd take to fly in the airspace, can't wait to do it myself.

    Great video sir! I just got my private pilot and I'm thinking about visiting Chicago area some day after the summer. It looks like bravo are not as scary as the sectional map depicts.

      @martinpauly  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!
      The trick with the airspace Bravo is simply to stay out of it (in this case under it). If you know how high you can fly without touching the Bravo, it's really simple. The alternative would be to ask for a clearance, though I've not yet been able to get one in Chicago. (Other Class Bravo airspace is easier to get into.)

      Yes, I've been to Schaumburg several times and always enjoyed my meal at Pilot Pete's. A great place for pilots and passengers alike, and the restaurant seems to be frequented by many locals, too, that come to enjoy food and drink, and of course watching airplanes.

    I agree with you that controller needs to slow down. It's not faster if you have to repeat it three times to be understood.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right, Eric. Fortunately this particular controller is an exception to the rule - most of the time, I find they speak at a very reasonable pace and are much easier to understand.

    In your estimation, sir, what does the Schaumburg Regional Airport lack in terms of airside and landside features, infrastructure, layout, operations, logistical support, amenities, etc.? I'm trying to get a real world, user and stakeholder perspective. You are someone who ostensibly is a relatively unbiased, objective point of view. Please let me know.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Schaumburg airport has more or less all the infrastructure one could ask for: an FBO/repair shop, a flight school, a beautiful FBO/terminal building, and a fantastic restaurant popular with pilots and local visitors alike. The recent addition of a weather reporting system (AWOS) was very helpful for pilots. Really, the one and only thing I can think of that is still missing - and this is a big one - is the lack off instrument approaches. Given the proximity to O'Hare, I don't know if this can ever be overcome. Given the kind of flying I do, I would not base my airplane at a VFR-only airport.
      I hope this helps.
      Kind regards,
      Martin

    • @johnmaer
      @johnmaer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@martinpauly Martin, thanks for your perspective. If they added a precision instrumentation-based glideslope/lighting, maybe another 1,000 feet of concrete, and preserved a unobstructed short-final glidepath course from the west, I believe they would be maximizing the airport. The airport is weather-locked, runway length limited, and looking at building construction on the western approach. My view is the airport is an underutilized asset for the community.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnmaer I agree, but I'm afraid I am not sure it will make a difference. Much of what you said was applicable to Meigs, too - an invaluable asset for the community, but the community didn't know it.
      - Martin

      @@martinpauly It is up to the local and distant aviation community, stakeholders - current and potential, as well as local citizens to pipe-up and help them make the right decisions. Meigs was a travesty....shame to the State Government and to the Republican Party at the time for not litigating the matter and rebuking Daley. Democratic tyranny at its worst. Schaumburg Airport is a bit of a paradox....squeezing in small corporate jets every now and then, being a workable facility for both fixed wing and rotary aircraft users (all major networks operate their news choppers out of Schaumburg), and seeing dwindling Gen-Av users (tie-downs have almost zeroed-out, etc. I'd like to see something done to make this a safer, more practical facility and grow the usage. It's location as an alternative to Chicago Executive, DuPage goes without saying.....its proximity to the city to the east, etc. Too much to like, much to make it better IMHO.

    Awesome vid as always. Very cool to share with the youth the awe of flite. What ipad do u use for flying? n do u hav to pay for a data plan to use foreflight n its gps ipad feature? Thank u.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tomas, the iPad is a standard iPad mini, the first mini that Apple made with a Retina display. I do pay for a data plan, but more for convenience than out of necessity. In flight, I get weather updates and traffic data through ADS-B right into this app, without a cellular data connection. The app I run is called "WingX Pro", not ForeFlight, but they are similar and do more or less the same things.

      Several apps can do this, but the one I use is called WingX. It is getting the traffic (and weather) data from an ADS-B receiver.
