Friday Harbor - a scenic flight in the Bonanza

  • The Pacific Northwest is stunningly beautiful, especially on a nice summer day like the one I flew from SeaTac (KSEA) to Friday Harbor (KFHR). Gorgeous views of the water, islands, downtown Seattle, and iconic airports like Boeing Field and Paine Field make this short flight highly interesting. From Friday Harbor it's just a short walk into town.

    Ive never flown a real GA a/c in that part of the US. But I instinctively knew that layout as the old Microsoft FSX free flight mode always had you on downwind for Friday Harbor.

      Ha ha! I remember asking a Seattle native many years ago about the weather - on many visits it had mostly been very nice, instead of the stereotypical drizzle. He said: "Don't tell anyone, we have enough people here the way it is!" 🤣

      Does anybody remember the song "Don't Come to Seattle" which was on an album released by the radio station KEZX back in the 1980's?
      "Don't come to Seattle,
      The sun don't shine up here.
      Oh, it comes out accidentally
      Maybe once or twice a year.
      It rains so long that moss grows
      On the southern side of trees,
      And summer feels like winter
      In the clammy ocean breeze."

      When I was a kid the entire valley from Kent to Auburn was farmland. When I graduated in 93 a person could still hunt within walking distance of their house on the east hill. Horses were common and I could ride my motorcycle from the high school to tue junior high in the woods without seeing a house. We may not be able to stop the change but I don’t have to like it. I miss my old hometown.

    I’m still trying to figure out the speeds and power settings for the different phases of flight in the bonanza. Every POH I look at is a little bit different. It was interesting that you cruise at 2500 RPM when I would think it would be around 23.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      In my opinion, the POH makes it look more complicated than it needs to be. I cruise wide open throttle, 2500 RPM, lean of peak. If I want to reduce cruise power, I start by pulling the RPM back (2400 or 2300 RPM). Or lean more aggressively (which means less HP when on the lean side).
