  • In this video we add splashes, waterfall meshes, and foam particle effects to our forest stream scene. These amazing assets were create by Tom Harle from the THARLEVFX TH-cam channel - so this video is the start of a collaboration with him. Starting in the new year, Tom is going to be creating a new series of videos aimed at teaching how these effects were made - so be sure to subscribe to his channel so you can catch those tutorials:

    It's getting there :) Only thing that sticks out is the height of the waterfalls. Water will try to get lower down as fast as it can, you never have any kind of thickness to the water as it pours over the edge unless it's flooding and moving extremely fast then you'd have all kinds of turbulence coming from the higher tier, in the waterfall and especially in the lower tier where it connects. This is where strategic placement of rocks etc plus foam and splashes will aid you.

    Im new to unreal and game development but I started with ue4.26 and thought the water sim is nice but now I really realize how big the deal really is lol! Still awesome water effects, looking almost better then waterplugin

    Great job, but just a suggestion here. The water that flows through the rock is a bit of an eyesore. Perhaps by using splines, you can curve the effect around the shape of the rock and let there be no water at the opposite end of the rock where water forms a triangular shape curving from the edges and reconnecting to the rest of the stream past the edge of the triangular shape

    Hi! The video is superb, you deserve it, adding the waterfall is time consuming but looks pretty!
    How did you manage to make water passable?
    Now I have waterBodyLake from UE 5 in my project. I did not find a way to add a collision to the water material in waterBodyLake. Please help me to make the ability to enter the water for the character and if it's not difficult to explain about adding splashes - what is the algorithm, in total?

    Ben you´re the only guy that can be able to explain exactly how is working the material nodes DDX and DDY. Nobody is able to explain to me exactly the use of this mathematical node. More or less I know it whe Iam using particles imported with alembic but Iam with seriouse dubts.. Ben Is it posible deal this theme in any of your great explanations?. Iam working to Enviroment Artist td 15 years ago and your tutorials technically are perfects. Thanks Master. Sorry for this question here. I follow you during years, Congratulations.

    amazing result! Could you please make a video how to make water ripples and splashes on footsteps when our third person character runs in the water? Or recommend a good tutorial on that. O maybe add this to your new tutorials about Unreal 4.26 water system? this is very important as the scene is hyper realistic but the character doesn't look realistic in the water... And it would be also very useful for your previous tutorials about puddles and raining system.

    • @BenCloward
      @BenCloward  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that is a good suggestion - thank you.

    Thanks for Sharing! Just a small thought about the Depth of Field. I feel in games, or interactive projects DOF is not really needed. Well, maybe just a small, very, very small amount to soften the edges. Reason being, the viewer's eyes when focusing on an item, will blur everything else automatically. When I focus on the horizon, I expect the background to become sharper, but as you have it defocused, it feels off. It feels like my eyes didn't adjust. Anyway, just a note. I love all your vids. Thanks again.

    • @BenCloward
      @BenCloward  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep - it's optional and mostly serves to separate the background from the foreground. Next week, I'll be talking about adding fog, which also does that - so you could use the fog for that instead of DOF if you want.

    they should make water a particle system but the particles are translucent and extremely small and respond to surfaces and collision. So instead of having to manually add in the water you can just "Pour" virtual water onto a map until it fills up to the right height. Then when the water flows over a water fall it can respond in a natural way.

    • @BenCloward
      @BenCloward  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That will probably be realistic to do in another 5-10 years, but currently, that type of method would bring any machine to its knees.

    I was actually going to comment on the fact that you haven't used any procedural textures on this scene. I thought you were going to use procedural moss for the logs and rocks (like the ice shader).
    Anyhow, great tutorials!

    • @BenCloward
      @BenCloward  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re right! I was planning to do a video on adding moss to things but I totally forgot. Oops. I’ll have to circle back to it. Thanks for reminding me.

    One would think, by Unreal 5 - they would included this basic feature with all the rivers, oceans, lakes and such. I mean.............

    How to deal with the boundary between waterfall and water surface ? I noticed that the waterfall seems to be using vertex offsets .

    • @BenCloward
      @BenCloward  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way I'm dealing with that is by making the edges of the water transparent and the edges of the waterfalls transparent so that the assets blend into each other. It looks pretty good to me. Do you think something else is needed?

      Also, super psyched about the collab! I hope you can keeping doing collabs moving forward!

    • @BenCloward
      @BenCloward  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, but I have to learn them for myself first so it might take a bit. Also, I'll have to figure out how to make the water look more realistic - because it looks cartoony in all of the media I've seen so far - like it belongs in Fortnight or something. :)

    I bought this pack and it works well so far but I can't get the splashes to move, they are just frozen static objects. How do I get the splashes to move/animate? I need this for when the bottom of the waterfall hits my lake's surface.

    • @nikolistary
      @nikolistary ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, the latest version 8/2022 is missing a lot of the meshes. This video shows 7 meshes, I have only 4. What gives?

    Can you edit the speed of the waterfall with this water VFX package?

    • @BenCloward
      @BenCloward  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I believe you can. If you can't, Tom shows how to create the entire waterfall material in his tutorial series here: th-cam.com/video/Uwy_6wQdmZ8/w-d-xo.html So you should be able to watch those videos and make your own waterfall material - or edit the one he made.
