The Super Mario Bros. Movie vs. Super Mario Bros. (1993)
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been hyped up as the first true big screen adaptation of its source material but video game fans who have been around since the 90's know that isn't the case. Mario and Luigi were also the stars of the 1993 film Super Mario Bros. which, despite being critically massacred, has found a cult audience years later praising it for its ironic entertainment value. We certainly enjoy both films albeit for much different reasons which has prompted us to compare what aspects each film adapted from the games to determine what worked in one case but didn’t in the other.

The 93 film is more interesting as a novelty piece in Mario history. However the new film is one I can actually look at and confidentially say "this is a mario movie". And a spectacular one at that.
The 1993 movie has became a meme over the years but it is actually alright. However if you are looking for the definitive Mario movie, the most recent one is the best because it is the one most like Mario.

The new Illumination Super Mario Bros movie is the best video game movie of all time in my opinion, and when they make a sequel it could be better. It's fine that Yoshi will be an added character in the second film of the franchise like how Puss In Boots was added as a new character in the Shrek sequel.

It will take me time to watch the 2023 "Super Mario Bros" because i have a problem that makes it hard for me to concentrate in movies/shows/books/games i like, but great video either way.

@Marshmallow I like the actors more, specifically Mario and Luigi. I think Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo were great as Mario and Luigi. I prefer them to Chris Pratt and Charlie Day. I also like the soundtrack more. I know the 2023 movie has music from the games but I prefer the soundtrack from 1993.

I still love the new 2023 animation remake better than the old crappy 1993 live action movie. Since Yoshi was in the after credits and Diddy Kong was in the jungle crowd along with Dixie Kong and Chunky Kong, I still bet Anthony Ramos would be a great choice for Yoshi (Along with John DiMaggio, Bill Hader, and Tony Hale being perfect for additional Yoshis) and Tom Kenny would definitely be a perfect choice for Diddy Kong.

Hey WickedBinge I pretty much agree with all of your points that the 2023 Super Mario Bros. movie is better than the 1994 Mario movie. I admit that I think that on it’s own, the 1993 movie isn’t really that bad of a movie on it’s own merit, but what brought it down was slapping the Mario name on it, and deviating from the source material.
The movie by itself looks really awesome and action packed but by slapping the Mario name on it, it really crushed people’s expectations that they thought they were seeing a Mario movie and it probably got negative reviews because of it having nothing to do with the source material. I think a better title would be Super Action Men or other things like that. Not Super Mario Bros. Since it had nothing to do with what we think of Mario. I’m not saying that the 1993 movie was necessarily a bad movie, it might have a so bad it’s good territory by cult classics but it is a BAD as in TERRIBLE territory instead of so bad it’s good territory Mario Movie.
I hope for your next videos before Guardians of the Galaxy 3 comes out, that you do these videos, Who should voice Yoshi, Wario, Waluigi, Princess Daisy, Professor E Gadd. Bowser Jr., and King Boo if they appear in the next movie or movies. And also which The 2023 Super Mario Bros. movie character would win Squid game. I think the winner will be Princess Peach, we saw her rule at the obstacle course, so Glass bridge, might be easy for her, she is a princess so she would underand she is and red and green lights, she is physically strong like with stopping the cages from being lowered into the lava, strategic, like duping bowser with an Ice Flower in her bouquet, a survivor so the night time brawl won’t hurt her much, and other things. I don’t know about the Honeycomb challenge though because I never saw her cut things.

honestly the one from 1993 could have work if it wasnt associated to mario, i liked the 2023 one better, i was part of the mario community for a long time until i started doing mario related things less frequently and eventually stopped, i stopped some months after bowser fury and this movie made nostalgia hit me with a baseball bat

In some ways it seems like the script began as it’s own original idea, that just so happened to be about two brothers until a studio person read it and said “Hey, why don’t we tweak this into a Mario film? Those games are all the rage right now, it’ll be a hit!”
The only thing Daisy in the 1993 movie had to do with The Daisy in the games is having a relationship with Luigi.

Bob Hoskins was masterful as Mario.. if Mario was a person in the real world, Bob’s performance was spot on. Amazing he nailed the role being a British actor with no prior knowledge of the Super Mario Bros. or baseline to model his performance after.

If I had to try and find o n e area that the live action film did better in an objective way... its the fact that Mario & Luigi are together longer in it. But because the personalities of them are so... off, it still doesn't feel too much like Mario & Luigi. As to where even with them being seperated a lot of the film, Mario & Luigi's portrayal as brothers is 100% accurate in this new one.

The Super Mario Bros 1993 movie is just a more realistic version of Super Mario Bros 2023 movie... Literary.

The 2022 movie is what a Super Mario Bros movie is unlike the 1993 version.
Neither movie is good, but obviously the 2023 version was better made and closer to the source material. I will say that the 1993 version is a bit more memorable on how bat-shit crazy it is where the 2023 movie I feel I will forget about it very soon. Not saying the 1993 movie is better, but I feel it left more on an impact on people, which is why it has its cult following including me.
