so just curious. During 2007 wwc, the coach replaced Solo with Scurry for the whole game and most thought that was a wrong call. In 2011 wwc, Pinoe was replaced by Heath (who i really like don't anyone take offence). Was that not a wrong call, atleast because Heath took the PK shot instead of Pinoe? Tobin's great, (I saw her PK goal in nwsl) I just wonder if Pinoe would/could have made that shot.
+sky stranger Those are two very different situations. In 2007, the team was reportedly already in a bit of turmoil. Hope was the starting GK but Ryan made a last minute decision to start an aging Scurry in goal for that match. As we know, Hope didn't handle the decision very professionally with her comments after the loss and that's what really caused the controversy. In 2011, Heath was a frequent late game sub. Pinoe started in the final against Japan, but was clearly losing steam and I think was rightfully substituted at the time. Unfortunately by then we didn't have many options for PK takers and the game didn't go our way. (Both Boxx and Lloyd missed their PKs as well) But all is well, they are world champions now! :)

I'm wondering cause i heard or read somewhere Tobin was only picked because Pinoe was supposed to take it if it went to PKs but since she was subbed out, Tobin had to take it. +sky stranger Right, PKs can only be taken by the 11 players on the field at that time. But Pinoe was subbed out before Japan scored to tie the game. Tobin is a ball handler, so bringing her in was a defensive move to try to keep possession to prevent the game from going to PKs. Unfortunately that didn't go our way. It was a tricky situation because the USWNT got into a PK shootout in the quarterfinal against Brazil. That meant that Japan got to study how our usual PK takers took their kicks. You could argue that's why Boxx's PK was saved, since she went the same way as she did in the quarterfinal. So as a coach you have to decide if you even want to use the same players to take the PKs. After Pinoe and Cheney were subbed out, I couldn't really see anyone else being chosen over Tobin to take the PK. In the end, I think nerves got the best of them. Carli just straight up missed the goal completely in the final. Wasn't our night. But yes, I can't wait until 2019!
