    Nice video, but missing several items. Major issue I had that took me a good 3 hours to resolve is at 13:10 where you mention "Secure Connection = Required". That really screwed me up as it killed all connectivity to my server. Based on my searching, seems a lot of others have this issue also. Could you expand on how this function should be properly used by a new users setting up Plex on Unraid for the first time in more detail?

    • @MikeFaucher

    I’m planning on replacing windows 10 with unRaid today for my plex server.
    After I install unRaid, can I just add the drive that contains my movie files to unRaid without the drive being formatted?

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not usually. There is a process for importing data but I do not believe it is automatic. Drives will be formatted by default. I would search the support forums or youtube for the exact process if it can be done. The cleanest way is to setup unraid with the data drive and the parity drive, then copy the data into the share. This way it is properly setup and will have the redundancy. Once you are setup you can attach your existing drive to the server, use the unassigned plugin and import the data on the drive but you should have everything already running first. Again there may be other ways but this is how I would do it to keep it clean. Here is a link to their forums: forums.unraid.net/forum/55-general-support/

      Thanks for the Sub. Yes, you do need a Plex pass for hardware transcoding. I neglected to clarify that in the video. Your build sounds awesome. There are a few videos out there that talk about setting a VM for gaming. It will be fun but you might want to consider if it is worth having enough horsepower in 1 system versus splitting it in two. Thanks mike, super helpful. A few notes I have after messing in Unraid for 48 hours. For the RAM transcode, instead of using /tmp I went with /dev/shm, as I have been told it limits the RAM usage to half the open system RAM. I would assume this help with some stability; alternatively there are ways to manually set allowable RAM usage. Also it did not seem you set your cache drive to hold the Plex app data/directory. Any reason not too? I would assume it would vastly improve the responsiveness of Plex. Thanks for the video!

      This can be caused by many different things. I would monitor the CPU to see if it is maxing out. If it is then make sure you are using hardware decoding. If it is not, it may be a network thing. Check you security settings in Plex under network and try to set the setting to "Preferred". I assume you are not running this on WiFi? The other thing is make sure your systems (internal) are set to use Direct Play. What CPU are you using?

    Mike, question about folders. In plex i have multiple sub folders. Where in unraid do you create subfolders. I watched your creating the movie share and then saw you had the subfolders in it and then later in plex you had the subfolders there as well. I also see the mention of Data in plex but don't understand how data equals the share you created in unraid

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe you are referring to "Libraries". Plex does not really care about folders so you can divide you data however your want and once you are in Plex and create a library, you can point to 1 or more folders for that library. For example if I have some movies in a folder called Movies 1 and more movies in a folder called Movies 2, I would create a library and point to each of these folder to create one global move library. The process at 27:18 is repeated for each folder of the library. The share I create in UNRAID is a high level folder such as MEDIA which in UNRAID becomes the default location and I then create sub folders under that. Hope that helps.

    • @andygonzalez7012
      @andygonzalez7012 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeFaucher First thanking for replying. I figured it out. I am new to Unraid so much can be confusing. What I wanted to know was how to create subfolders within the share. I was attempting to create subshares but there was no options for that so after going around several other youtubes I realized that you created the folders within the share either by doing so on the file manager after creating the network map or via unraid dashboard under View of the pool device which let you create one.

    I currently have a plex server set up. It works great but a pain in the butt for backup! In a 12 bay rack mount rosewill case. AMD X4 840 processor, Windows 10 Pro, 8GB Ram, 6 drives (4-5TB and 1-8TB) totaling 28TB backing up to 6 drives (4-5TB and 1-8TB) totaling 28TB. I want to go to unraid (8-4TB and 2-8TB) for 56TB. What would be the best way to convert to unraid without loosing any files? The drives have 2 directories, TV Shows and Movies. Maybe buy 2 more 8TB and make the unraid and then start copying over files till old drive is empty then add old drive to unraid, then rinse and repete till all old drives are in case with unraid and I would just have 2 old 4TB drives that could go into another system. Also are the files with shows and movies on unraid accessible with windows explorer? I use VLC once in a while to access plex shows. What about data safety and data loss? ie. drive crash? There are probably more direct ways of ingesting data without a second systems but I have not done it so I do not want to miss lead you. There community is very active and they can possibly recommended a plug in that will import the data more directly but what you described will work. • @MikeFaucher

      I created one main share called "Movies" which is the path you use when you set up UNRAID. Then I created sub directories for every type such photos, movies, blue-ray, etc. Then you go in the Plex and create your separate libraries there. Unraid only needs the one main share, and Plex handles the rest. You can create as many as you want. You might want to check out some videos on actually configuring Plex as once it is installed, the rest is really handled by Plex and not UNRAID. Good luck and let me know.

    Hi Mike! Awesome video--huge help! Quick question: I'm planning to use a Ryzen R5 3400G in my rig (my hope is that this will allow me to stick with AMD without buying a GPU). What do you think? Also, I'd like to use this NAS as a cloud server for all of my documents (books, papers, miscellany, etc.,). I'd imagine unraid has functionality for this, too, but I thought I'd ask just in case you know off the top of your head. Thanks!

      You can certainly run something like nextcloud, (and a couple of others), Sync, or even Dropbox on UNRAID. The community is excellent and there is allot of apps available. I believe that NextClould is on of the favorites but you have to jump through a few hoops to setup secure external access. As for the AMD R5, hardware transcoding as far as I know, is only available on Intel or through a dedicated GPU. You might might able to find someone who has gotten it to work but I am not aware of it. Though I share your desire for AMD and will be using one on my next desktop build, I would stick with Intel for a NAS build unless you plan on adding a GPU. Just my two cents. Good luck with your choices and let us know what your decide.

    I'm building an unraid server with NAS and Plex server. I have option to choose between Amd Ryzen 7 1700x and Intel i7-8700. I think to go with Intel but not sure if extra cores of Amd aren't better. What would you recommend?

    • @MikeFaucher
      @MikeFaucher  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Both will be great for a server however if you plan on using it for Plex you will need to add a graphics card if you use AMD. If cost is a factor and you are going to use Plex, go with the Intel. If you were planning to add a graphics card either way, then the AMD will be a good choice as well. Personally if you are thinking about he 8700, then go for the 9700. You will get the extra cores and not need the video. I just put in a 6 core 9400 and it runs great. One VM running Windows 10, Plex, and NAS functions and it barely breaks a sweat. hope that helps and thanks for the question.

    Hi thanks for the amazing guide! I got so close to the HW transcoding working, however I'm just getting a black screen when it's trying to hw transcode. Do you have any idea what might be causing this? I followed your guide exactly except I installed Intel GPU TOP plugin to make /dev/dri appear. I can see that the GPU is being used 100% for a while, then it drops to zero, like one or two threads are pinned on 100% while it's doing this. If I remove /dev/dri it starts software transcoding normally.

    How do you back up that much data without enormous monthly fees. My media server just runs on normal window and I don't have any drive redundancy. I do use backblaze's unlimited service. My strategy is a bit over the top. My Unraid which mostly has media and data archives, has one drive of redundancy and is currently backed up to one of 4 NAS units. The data I have stored on the other 3 is backed up to each other meaning NAS to NAS. In addition, critical data (non media) is copied to Wasabi cloud storage on a weekly basis. These containers have different developers so that means the settings may be different. SpaceInvaderOne has a lot of videos on Unraid but he really doesn't have one to set up plex. You have selected some very good and high-end parts. I only have one question and that is the video card. Is there a reason you selected the P2000? Though the P2000 is good for certain things gaming is not one of them. You might try the exact setup you have defined without the video as that CPU will transcode 6-10 streams (depending on media) and see if you like it. Once you get everything working you can always check out what others are using and add the video later. The concern I have how are you planning to configure. Are you using UNRAID as you OS and then going to run a VM or are you running Windows with P{lex in the background? How you plan on configuring will determine which video card you select.
