    power outage: keeping plex up and running not a huge need. Have it auto shutdown properly, because there would be a time where you're away and the power goes out.
    Also, I'd use a rack shelf if you're having problems finding rails, and you could put your NAS drives on something besides your UPS'.

    Coming from a commercial IT background, when it comes to power, you have to ask yourself, what are you trying to achieve??
    If you have a power outage in your area, your LAN may stay alive due to your UPS's, but you are going to lose your Plex clients and TV.... Unless you protect them with a UPS as well !!
    Therefore, in your situation, the whole point of the UPS is to have enough runtime to be able to safely shut down your servers and NAS's.
    There is really no point in trying to get yourself into a position where you are able to still watch a movie, when your whole neighborhood is out !

    • @jpsimmonds-au
      @jpsimmonds-au 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes 100% agree with this (again commercial background) however I would want to caveat this by saying assuming you have an NVR and the cameras are powered via POE (and perhaps a VOIP system as well) you want to maintain this as long as reasonably possible as I have had multiple clients with issues of thieves breaking in and cutting the power lines.

Now thinking of changing up the Plex server to a dedicated Intel 11th i7-1100k only for Plex and reuse the 3900x for other tasks. For me, the most important thing was to have Fast, safe and reliable storage and it doesn't get better than Truenas with ZFS.

    Great video Jason. Something to keep in mind about keeping plex up and having redundant power. If your home loses power, then you will not have internet connectivity. Especially is your block of the grid goes out - as it typically does during failures. If that's the case, your ISP's router and switching hardware in your area will likely also be out, so it wouldn't matter if your server is spinning or not.
    I only mention this because the exact same thing happened to me. I had my nighthawk router and plex server both on a UPS when power when out, but the local ISP network was down rendering my redundancy useless.

    • @909SportRider
      @909SportRider ปีที่แล้ว

      This is partially incorrect. If your ISP goes down your Plex server will still operate 100% fine on your LAN. As long as your server, router and TV have some backup power you can enjoy all your hosted content 24/7 regardless of your ISP being up or down. The only thing that would not function would be remote streaming, however with something such as the UniFi LTE you could easily have 4G/LTE failover that works automatically whenever your ISP goes down so yeah you could even remote stream when the power and ISP are offline.

It can do about 7-10 1080p transcodes before it starts chocking and buffering ( and this is with about 8 dockers and one Ubuntu VM running in the background ). I wouldn't try a 4K transcoding on it, but it gets the job done. As you said, running a discrete GPU is not for everyone. Modern Intel CPUs with integrated graphics cards offer more than more home servers need. And it should be significantly more energy-efficient too in comparison

    There are probably seven answers to that question . I would say that if you are going with a 100% Plex only server , I would say that your gen 10 is a good idea. If you are running other stuff , I would go full on GPU. I started off with going the CPU route , but I run Unraid with a lot of other apps so I dedicated the P2000 to Plex so that I could peel cores off to other tasks .. I’ve build 27 data centers for the death star and we use power distribution power rose so we can switch between grid source A , grid source B , UPS, and Generator. The power rose would detect power drop and make a seamless transfer from grid A or B then use ups for warm transfer holding the IDC until the generator hit the required RPMs in the automatic spin up.

The Intel GPU is like you said, a beast. I have no regrets and my whole server still pulls 60-70W most of the time.

    I just use a 5 year old AMD A8 7600 with 8 WD Red's in a JBOD and don't transcode anything. Handles 4K just fine. Why would anyone transcode? Seems silly to me.

      Honestly, I find 4K transcoding useless, at least for me. Anything 4k should be played directly. One case scenario I can think of is when you are traveling, or somewhere else, you can transcode to watch your 4K collection on a slower internet.

    What about 4K HDR transcoding? Thought you needed a dedicated GPU for that to work, or does it work on Integrated GPU too?
    Also that rail flex when installing, wow so scared… Saying of the video: “It’s back in my rack” lol

    Why not just use your server as a NAS and connect your NUC to it to pull files over the network and use that as your Plex server?

    Re build Loki with an Intel Xeon W-1290p + SUPERMICRO X12SCZ-TLN4F + 128GB DDR4 ECC + unRaid, drop Blue Iris in favor of NxWitness (works on linux or windows), the 1290 should handle everything with ease.

    Depending on how soon you want to build, the new Ryzen chips (that aren't out yet) will have integrated graphics also. Something to keep in mind if your build doesn't happen too soon.

      AMD is a no go for transcoding. You definitely want to go Intel/Nvidia.

      Would they have the equivalent of QuickSync? It's not the iGPU itself but the QuickSync that makes it a beast on Intel.

    I don't think GPU transcoding is dead. I think it has its use cases. But the update is a great idea. Can't wait to see how things go with your power setup(working on the same), the updates to your server(wish I had the free time to drive down and buy Zeus from you).

    I've been running a 9th Gen integrated intel for about 3 years, and it works great. It does sometimes give me trouble when people transcode 4k HDR content (I only let people who know what they're doing access my 4k stuff, but subtitles still tend to force transcoding). Other than that, it's worked fantastic - I've handled 8 simultaneous transcodes without issue. In a few years, I'll probably upgrade to a newer gen to try and improve 4k HDR with subtitles, but I plan on sticking with integrated graphics.

    Question for you, not sure if you will see this or not. If I watch a movie on my plex server and pause it for a lengthy amount of time and then come back to it, it will play for like 1 minute and then it will pause and try to buffer indefinitely. The only solution is to close the chrome tab and open another one and reload plex and then it will play fine, have you ever ran into this?

    I've been playing with PLEX for many years now and have tested GPU hardware acceleration and no hardware acceleration. I tested Plex on Ubuntu and windows on both bare metal and VM's. I also run my home networking hardware off Solar+battery Storage, so power usage is a big deal. I've concluded that running PLEX on a Bare Metal install of Windows on a Intel Chip works BEST. So I ended up picking up a Nice used Lenovo ThinkPad X390 with Intel i5-8365U. This has worked GREAT! I just link to my larger server for the Archive storage needs. This same laptop ALSO runs my Blue Iris security camera setup like a champ at the same time. Much more power efficient than running these two things on any sort of a VM with GPU passthrough. The laptop is the best $300 I've spent on my home setup in a while. Keep the videos coming, don't be ashamed of your setup!

    iGPU isn't always an option on a "server" platform. Supermicro has some boards where the onboard gpu for the ipmi kills the ability to use the igpu. Ask me how much I wasted on a XEON before finding this out...

    Use your NUC for transcoding and client server access, use your Synology(s) for media storage. For power saving and sound a NUC specific server seems like the way to go (There will be redundancy issues but performance and power savings would be worth the trade off this is a home your not Netflix). Also use the NUC for your Blue Iris. Get a quote from Tesla solar panels and powerwalls. The Tesla power software would be something I thing you would like.

    So, I'm running an i3-9100F, with 16G RAM, Plex running in a container using the nvidia compatibility layer with a 1660 Super. Videos are NFS mounted from NAS. I regularly have 3 or 4 concurrent transcodes going on (obviously, I've got the driver patch installed that circumvents the 2 stream limit). The whole server runs on a Mini ITX board in an NR200 case that's compact and dead silent. Why so much extra hardware for your server? The setup you're describing seems like so much overkill for very little return on investment. What am I missing here?

    I'm waiting to see how Intel's discrete GPUs stack up. If Intel has a gpu model that is low profile and can be powered by the pcie slot only. It might be a good solution for having quick sync regardless of the platform and won't get you stuck with a specific motherboard, socket and cpu generation. I currently am using my old AMD pc with a 1650 Super (which is limited to 2 streams with stock drivers) as my Plex server. Transcode isn't really that necessary since most of my clients can direct play but sometimes you need it to downscale to a lower bitrate.

    I have two of those cases in 2u wings like yours. Get the 2u wings for it, they hold way more weight than that 1u you got. Also, mount it at the very bottom. You will have problems later mounting it at that height. Thats just too much dangerous weight to have on 1u shelf wings at that height.
