Notably, for those who don't know, Battles enter the battlefield under the control of the player who cast it. I've been hearing lately people saying it enters under an opponent's control probably due to the picking someone to defend it part
I personally think the Last Sword in the Cycle should have a spot, I mean it’s protecting from blue bounce effects and black spot removal and grants graveyard instant/sorcery utility. Certainly not the strongest but certainly a card to give a nod to :)
not only its super obvious, I mean its a total 5 mana to play and equiped + it needs to be done at sorce speed it also doesnt really provide you if a way to hit the oponent unless black and blue is everything they have, in which case they might just blow up your creature before its equipped or bounce the actual equipment, after that all you get is a survey 2 and maybe one free spells, its just too many maybes
@@pedrof6767 Perhaps so but then remember, Mono Blue and Mono Black isn’t all that unpopular, you’ll have your time to shine against them. Obviously timing is key, you play it when your opponent is tapped, both the equipment and the equip cost. A lot of Maybes but a lot of thinking it through too. Any of the swords is worth playing I’d say, some give busted effects like untapping lands, others make you ramp which is cool, others just deal 2 damage and draw, not that great for commander but still. The thing at hand is that your argument would make any commander costing 5 or more also unviable in any way or form. Look, you could run Muldrotha, but it’s gonna be killed immediately, run cheaper. You play Winota, but she gets countered, run cheaper. Play Isamaru, but a turn 1 Mono white commander isn’t very good, you have no chance to win past turn 6. A lot of ifs but a lot of maybes is what makes the game interesting.
@@schumerus6786 I see whats giving you trouble, you mistook "this card is not top 10" for this card is not worth playing. Your arguments where it protects, yeah it protects against the colors with most instant effects in the game and it takes 5 mana at sorce speed to do so, and even after you do it the ceiling for the pay off is not that high and the floor is a whopping survey 2. That's not top 10 material at all
@@schumerus6786 honestly in commander the sword that draws and gives +2 is better than this one. Drawing cards in any format, but especially one with longer drawn out games like commander, is FAR better than the surveil and cast an instant
I’m really sad they didn’t name the last sword “The sword of Dreams and Nightmares”. That wouldn’t sounded so much cooler, and represented the nightmare of the phyrexians being fought back against by the creativity of the multiverse. Ashiok should’ve stolen it from Jin’s treasury and given it to Kaito before saying: “Fuck him up”
Invasion of Kaldheim looks like one of the best wheel effects ever, giving you one extra turn of access to your previous hand. A perfect fit for any RX exile-matters decks (Bell Borca, Nassari, Prosper, Faldorn), and the back side is fine. I'm always on the market for things that tap Kalamax down, so any new convoke instant is intriguing. Meeting of Minds seems like a perfect fit, while Invasion of Arcavios gives me an extra target to attack and a cheap Swarm Intelligence.
The fact that it doesn't put you up on cards really makes things awkward. One of the things that makes the og wheel so strong is you could vomit your hand and then guarantee a fresh 7, and the invasion leads to awkward situations where you wanna not play spells to try and play the invasion first before dumping your hand which is just unnatural sequencing. Can't play your mana rocks/rituals first, gotta hold them (and have extra mana) so you draw more cards off your invasion. In decks that synergize with it there's potential for sure but idk that I'd play it outside of specific lists
I'm personally such a huge fan of amonkhet and just finished building bintu the glorified in edh so djeru and hazoret have me so excited. I'm going to be buying their single and building an edh deck as soon as I do.
props for the DS9 reference Prof, and thanks for the info on Picard, have not started the season yet, but wrong Founders...unless this is revealing the Belladros and the other dragons the college are named after are secretly five changelings who left the Great Link following Odo rejoining at the end of the war in DS9 or something.
The one for me is Tribute to the World Tree. 1/1s become 3/3s and 3+ become a card draw machine. It's good in literally any deck that can somewhat consistently cast the 3 green.
As a green player, I wholeheartedly agree😂. Most of my decks include green, so I’m stoked for Tribute. Previous cards with similar effect only triggered when >4 power etb’s, and don’t buff anything smaller like this does.
Thank you Professsor for the Star Trek references and story discussion. I really actually enjoyed your video with Princess a few years back about your Star Trek custom picks.
I love your content bro. I know I'm just a lowly commenter, but I've been supporting your content since I was in college and missing the smell of freshly opened booster packs. I remember when all I had were 3 decks that my brother helped me make. A mono red burn deck, a golgari scavenge deck, and an animar edh deck. They all got stolen at a card shop after a draft tournament and while I was in college I didn't have any money to replace them. That's around when I started watching your videos. Your videos helped me a lot. To save money, feel better, and keep my love for magic alive. Thank you so much for what you do, and I wish you safety and peace in your future bro.
12:36 Using Chain Lightning, while controlling the very thing you wish to destroy... The Founders are wise! You know, it reminds me of how, remember in "Broken Link", when the female changeling told Garak there were no Cardassian survivors from the battle in "The Die is Cast"? That in fact all Cardassians were already dead? And then through a series of events The Founders pretty much saw to the deaths of a significant chunk of the Cardassian population? Controlling the thing you wish to destroy can be very effective.
I really agree with you on the ikoria tutor its just great and worth getting a few in advance before they get pricier, while they'll never get to the prize of a finale, it is still amazing since you can get cards from your graveyard, definitely picking a couple
The tutor isn't bad, though I do think a more accurate comparison is Green Sun's Zenith since Finale of Devestation is so good because it also does an impression of Craterhoof Behemoth when you cast it, where Invasion of Ikoria does not.
You brought up almost all the cards I think are going to be really good except one. As someone who runs a LOT of basic lands in my decks, I tend to run Explosive Vegetation alongside the standard Cultivate and Kodama's Reach. As such, Invasion of Zendikar is in pretty much every deck, a better version of that card. It costs exactly the same amount, finds exactly the same number of basic lands, but has the benefit of being able to be flickered (in decks that can do that) recurred, and if it's defeated effectively gives you a third land. In any deck that's not recurring or copying spells, this battle is going to be strictly better. And on the note of ramp... while it's not very well costed, I LOVE that with Fertilid's Favor you can really politic since you can choose an opponent to get +1/+1 counters or search for a land. I'm going to watch and see how it does, but I also think Cut Short is potentially going to be very good here. Granted planeswalkers aren't often that great in commander, but when someone does tend to get one like an Elspeth, Sun's Champion or Tamiyo, Field Researcher out, they typically have little trouble defending them and have ultimates that can be very problematic. So being able to, for free and at instant speed, destroy a planeswalker feels like a handy tool to have. And in the event there are no planeswalkers, it still can target an attacking threat, or even powerful mana producers like Elvish Archdruid or Priest of Titania.
Surge of Salvation is one of my faves. I can easily see it becoming a White staple and it will be super strong in commander... 1 White cost for Hexproof to all your permanents and yourself until end of turn. PLUS, prevent all damage to your creatures from Red and Black sources. For 1 cost that is huge.
Nice picks! I'm excited to see if Heliod Radiant Dawn sees any play. Once flipped I think there's some nutty plays that could be pulled off, especially in commander.
I think my favorite battle is Invasion of Segovia. Other non legendaries worth mentioning for commander are Dusk Legion Duelist, Surge of Salvation, Faerie Mastermind, Stasis Field, Pile On and Kami of Whispered Hopes.
Local gamestores will likely not have said 8 cards.. and some are even selling re-sealed packs at premium rates.. so though "buy from your local gamestore" makes a novel sentiment, it doesn't really hold water
First of all, thank you professor for bringing me back to magic once again, as you did in 2017. I've been playing on and off since the 90's. I started playing in exodus and Wall of nets was a monster. Now, it would be a nuisance at most. Boy do i miss Urza's saga... But i digress. This time, i have to say i enjoyed Ravnica and War of the spark. Missed the whole school thing and skiped kamigawa. Now i returned once again for Phyrexia, since it stired up memories... I don't really enjoy it. I don't like the toxic and poison counters. I find it annoying that not only do i have to worry about my life pool, also don't accumulate 10 poison counters, since i lose anyways. Let's see what the next set brings. Hopefully, something more "traditional"? history wise, it's a different story. I'm enjoying it. Once again, thank you for your work. Amazing as always!! Best wishes from Argentina!
Really glad to see Invasion of Arcavios here, everyone seemed to be down on it during spoiler season but i’m gonna jam it into so many spellslinger decks
If you're in Black you can tutor for Aether Snap to instantly flip Arcavios by removing all counters from it (though it might have other side effects depending on board state)
Yeah I've been brewing up an Ovika, Enigma Goliath list and am definitely looking for a City on Fire when I go to prerelease next weekend. Lots of cool cards for that list in here. Definitely looking at singles after I play sealed.
I feel like Invasion of Ravnica has potential to do well in Commander. Colorless single target removal that can exile an annoying creature, artifact, enchantment, planeswalker or battle as long as it's not two colors seems like pretty solid removal for 5 mana. And if you're in a multicolor deck that can take advantage of the creature on the back side, even better.
Hoarding Broodlord and Sheoldred are the two cards I'm most excited for. But after watching this, Invasion of Arcavios and City on Fire look like they'd both have a spot in my Anhelo deck.
I love strixhaven so much. One of the best sets wotc has done! Honestly, I feel like Marxh of the Machines is the only one that equally gave me so much joy
Nooo I was holding off on City on Fire but said I'd pull the trigger now people might realise how sweet this card is. Fiery emmancipation is the card that got away, was drafting the set in my LGS and was boros agro but my curve stopped at 3 when it was passed to me so I couldn't take it and moved it on. Months later I wanted one for commander and was shocked at the price.
I'm not sure I would use Djeru as my commander, but I'm glad to say I remembrer the card even if I have no idea what his role in any story is or was; he's a cool tech for some of my decks.
It's cool to see you give a spotlight to Battle for Arcavios, which people have been telling me is impractical. I think Battle for Theros is just as good: Idyllic Tutor on one side, a God on the other.
I realy think invasion of segovia has potential considering its backside ia pretty much blue ramp and several other shenanigans. Also with how much exile removal we get i feel a exile-proof keyword is becomming neccessary soon, if just to make sure destroy removal stays relevant maybe "indispendible" or something.
geeking out for a second, while watching the video I was like "that is just bonkers good" about Invocation of the Founders and right after I thought it Prof said it!
Great picks Prof, I'll definitely keep my eyes on these cards. Now, just as a heads up, it looks like Dragon Shield have a new Portfolio to replace the dragon scale. Might be just a reskin of their original portfolios, but it might not be. Then they have the dual matte sleeves if you wanna take a closer look at them as products.
Dude, you can like Star Trek *and* Star Wars. Excluding one because you love another is nearsighted. Also, they're different genres: Star Trek is Science Fiction and Star Wars is Science Fantasy.
I could talk Deep Space Nine for HOURS. Did you know that the first 3 seasons are actually far better than final 3 seasons? As for season 4, well, better buckle up because...
It'd be interesting to see how many people would watch it. Maybe get it sponsored by Helix Sleep cuz it's so boring haha zing Deep Sleep Nine haha The previous joke made me sad to type but I stand by Deep Sleep Nine as a banger of a line.
As much as I've disliked how many alternate arts there have been in the last few sets, this one does have some fantastic art for the various plane showcase frames and art styles
I'm going to put Invasion of Theros in my aggro Ephara deck. Allowing me to search of Heliod, God of the Sun to give all my creatures vigilance? Very helpful. And if I already have him, it'll allow me to have another indestructible enchantment, with a useful effect, to give my Ephara a higher baseline devotion be able to turn her into a creature.
I’ve actually finally hopped on the bandwagon with buying singles. I can’t justify spending the money on boxes with the rate that WotC is pushing content plus the price jacking they’ve been doing.
Singles are the way to go! I was planning on buying a booster box to get all the cards I wanted, but I stead I got them all (and other cards besides) for only £40!
Immediately putting Invasion of Ikoria into Yarok for the double FoD, at the cost of losing the +X/+X. But who needs +X/+X when you can find Craterhoof?
Man, I could listen to the prof talk about star trek for hours, even though I'd probably disagree with a couple of his opinions (DS9>TNG) I was kinda bothered when the goo face said that Vadic was expendable, since the whole deal about the founders and changelings is how much they care about their species and their survival. But the latest episodes seemed to hint that, while Vadic and her crew are Changelings, goo face is not, so now I'm super excited to find out who the real antagonist/s might be. Although I wish we had more of Vadic and she had a better ending, she was superb in my opinion as a villain.
Hello community, hello Prof, need your help! Friends of me are discussing the new battle type cards. In my eyes there is a big lack of ruleing here! What is the exact definition of "defeated"?! So a battle is defeated when the last defence counter ist removed. BUT WHAT CAN REMOVE DEFENCE COUNTERS? Ofcourse damage can.... But what if you "destroy" or "exile" a battle with another target or global spell? Will it "flip" (go into Exile to get casted) or not?
Urabrask's problem is you've going to have a hard time flipping him in commander. The restriction of casting three instants or sorceries in a turn is not a hoop a lot of decks can jump through in this format. I feel like, at least for this format, he's got the same problem Chandra from Origins did. Great if you can flip them, but they set the bar for doing so too high, especially compared to the others.
@@Uefeti except the other four don't really require many hoops to be jumped through, and Vorinclex doesn't have any extra requirements at all. Urabrask is very niche in what kind of deck can even play him at all.
@@anthonydelfino6171 if you flip it once you are good cause when you get to the third part of the saga it will go to normal and you have to all instants and sorceries in all graveyards and you can cast 3 and pay 1 to activate it again and rinse and repeat
I'm betting they are prisoners and other Changelings that didn't return to the Great Link, staying behind to exact vengeance for how they were treated. Do you think Jack's telepathy is Borg related though? Something left over in Picard's DNA from when he was assimilated?
good evening Professor one card as a 99 honorable mention i would like to suggest is polukranos reborn. a 3 green generic legendary hydra that is a 4/5 with reach. it also has 6 and phyrexian white mana to transform into Polokranos engine of Ruin, a 6/6 reach lifleink phyrexian hydra that has "Whenever Polukranos, Engine of Ruin or another nontoken Hydra you control dies, create a 3/3 green and white Phyrexian Hydra creature token with reach and a 3/3 green and white Phyrexian Hydra creature token with lifelink." do i here wormcoil engines coming back into play with this new hydra?
I feel like this set might actually be worth getting a box or 2. There seems to be a LOT of commander playable cards in here. All the teamups/battles/praetors etc. Singles will still be better but I feel like there isn’t that much unplayable bulk here. Could just be me but this set feels like it was designed more for commander rather than standard.

Fiery emmancipation is the card that got away, was drafting the set in my LGS and was boros agro but my curve stopped at 3 when it was passed to me so I couldn't take it and moved it on. Months later I wanted one for commander and was shocked at the price.
Really superb video! I am still longing for Universes Beyond Star Trek and the fight of Megatron vs the Borg Queen 😅
I'm not sure I would use Djeru as my commander, but I'm glad to say I remembrer the card even if I have no idea what his role in any story is or was; he's a cool tech for some of my decks.
Thanks for the video and information on this mtg set and recommendation ❤happy Easter 🙏🙏🙏 💕
I can’t wait to put City on Fire in my Tor Waukie burn deck along with Fiery Emancipation. 36 damage Lightning bolt? Let’s go!
Dang it! Now I'm extra mad because it's not getting released in March! Why did you destroy my ignorance?!?😭
Ah Ikoria, I love when anyone mentions this plane. Battle of Ikoria having the ability to Transform into Godzilla is funny too
I just made a titania gaea incarnete deck and was freaking out at how perfectly wrenn and realmbreaker fits in
It’s def the changelings and the Borg, Brian!! When is your theory video coming out?
..unrelated to the actual content of this video, but that was such a sharp looking outfit. I loved the tie. 😊
I love the Star Trek bunny trail! I am right there with you Prof... Star Trek Universes beyond set? It could happen.
Find these MoM singles in your area!
But are they hot?
geeking out for a second, while watching the video I was like "that is just bonkers good" about Invocation of the Founders and right after I thought it Prof said it!
Excellent video! Very positive and informative with just a dash of that Prof style cynicism!
This is the channel I fell in love with!
I really like your top 5 picks. One card I find interesting is Herald of the Hoofbeats. Thank you for the video Professor.
Thank you for reminding me about picard forget last weeks episode!!
DS9 is the only star trek season where the ending can be described as "Large Black Man tackles Space Satan into an Errupting Volcano."
My personal favorite card from the set/commander products is Vodalian Wave-Knight. Seems like a super great card for merfolk or knight decks
Saheeli, the Gifted would be an awesome commander to run City of Fire with!
I'm very excited for Wand of the Worldsoul. Give Elesh Norn (either one) convoke? Yes please!
Love to see City on Fire at #1 - been wanting that card for my Mardu tokens deck since it got spoiled.
The Star Trek rant made me laugh so hard I spit out my cereal! I pray that the Prof is a Star Trek fan and this wasn't just an elaborate joke.
Dude, you can like Star Trek *and* Star Wars. Excluding one because you love another is nearsighted. Also, they're different genres: Star Trek is Science Fiction and Star Wars is Science Fantasy.
Maybe not for casual commander, but for staxier competitive-leaning decks Drana and Linvala seems like an absolute house.
The DS9 Reference made me so happy. Well played, Professor.
I could talk Deep Space Nine for HOURS. Did you know that the first 3 seasons are actually far better than final 3 seasons? As for season 4, well, better buckle up because...
@@TolarianCommunityCollege please do
It'd be interesting to see how many people would watch it. Maybe get it sponsored by Helix Sleep cuz it's so boring haha zing Deep Sleep Nine haha
The previous joke made me sad to type but I stand by Deep Sleep Nine as a banger of a line.
Great video
The Maquis did nothing wrong!
As much as I've disliked how many alternate arts there have been in the last few sets, this one does have some fantastic art for the various plane showcase frames and art styles
There's definitely something for everyone this time
I thinking they're not gonna find Odo without some Old Footage/CGI intervention as the good Constable, Rene Auberjonois, passed away in 2019...
I agree that battles seem much better in commander.
Dude, you crack me up. I loved the intro lol. Anyway, keep it up.
Glad you enjoyed
I'm going to put Invasion of Theros in my aggro Ephara deck. Allowing me to search of Heliod, God of the Sun to give all my creatures vigilance? Very helpful. And if I already have him, it'll allow me to have another indestructible enchantment, with a useful effect, to give my Ephara a higher baseline devotion be able to turn her into a creature.
Hey Prof, will you do a new Planechase video?
Professor: "Be sure not to buy mom, but buy the singles you want to play with"
Me: Giggity
i've heard suggested that the big bad is the borg, somehow. or that jack is possessed by a pah wraith. idk. xD
I hear that you play fnm near Portland, I would like to meet you, which lgs do you plan on going to on April 14th?
Watching the Professor mock the team-ups because they don't make any sense re-established balance to my inner multiverse.
I appreciate you for the DS9 reference 👌🔥🙌
I'd love to see how Worf would manage to reach Odo specifically in the great link.
I have been re-watching DS9; It is great. Secret Lair Star Trek?
Loved he first one, i'll definetely buy this for my commander deck
Man, I could listen to the prof talk about star trek for hours, even though I'd probably disagree with a couple of his opinions (DS9>TNG) I was kinda bothered when the goo face said that Vadic was expendable, since the whole deal about the founders and changelings is how much they care about their species and their survival. But the latest episodes seemed to hint that, while Vadic and her crew are Changelings, goo face is not, so now I'm super excited to find out who the real antagonist/s might be. Although I wish we had more of Vadic and she had a better ending, she was superb in my opinion as a villain.
Invasion of Fiora can also just wipe all creatures if you choose both modes
I'm going to buy a box 1 to support the game store and also because cards I guess idk mainly the first thing
Need to pick up, Kairi and Hidetsugu, also Fiery emancipation x8 sounds epic
Hello community, hello Prof, need your help!
Friends of me are discussing the new battle type cards.
In my eyes there is a big lack of ruleing here! What is the exact definition of "defeated"?! So a battle is defeated when the last defence counter ist removed. BUT WHAT CAN REMOVE DEFENCE COUNTERS? Ofcourse damage can.... But what if you "destroy" or "exile" a battle with another target or global spell? Will it "flip" (go into Exile to get casted) or not?
i feel like urabrask is a house for storm decks surprised it wasn't on the list
He’s the worse version of Birgi.
If you don’t run her, no reason to run him either.
@@anthonydelfino6171
Chandra and Urabrask requirements are EXTREMELY different. He will be easily flipped in the right storm/spellslinger deck
Wotc needs to make a Glasspool Mimic with alternative art featuring Odo
I'm betting they are prisoners and other Changelings that didn't return to the Great Link, staying behind to exact vengeance for how they were treated. Do you think Jack's telepathy is Borg related though? Something left over in Picard's DNA from when he was assimilated?
Does anyone else think its absolutely goofy that were getting a physical copy of the second Zilortha before the first?
As a huge DS9 Junky I didn't expect to get represented but I'm happy it happened!
good evening Professor one card as a 99 honorable mention i would like to suggest is polukranos reborn. a 3 green generic legendary hydra that is a 4/5 with reach. it also has 6 and phyrexian white mana to transform into Polokranos engine of Ruin, a 6/6 reach lifleink phyrexian hydra that has "Whenever Polukranos, Engine of Ruin or another nontoken Hydra you control dies, create a 3/3 green and white Phyrexian Hydra creature token with reach and a 3/3 green and white Phyrexian Hydra creature token with lifelink." do i here wormcoil engines coming back into play with this new hydra?
I feel like this set might actually be worth getting a box or 2. There seems to be a LOT of commander playable cards in here. All the teamups/battles/praetors etc.
Singles will still be better but I feel like there isn’t that much unplayable bulk here. Could just be me but this set feels like it was designed more for commander rather than standard.
Not to mention the multiverse legends cards
I'm not a Trek fan, but the DS9 segue was really funny
Any plans on doing this but talk about the best pauper cards in the set?
Can I just say I love all the Star Trek and Picard shout outs?
The ikoria battle is definitely the strongest battle
