I had that bat. It was heavy and was on par with todays bats. I remember borrowing a friends DF Attack Botham bat in 87 ish, and half edged a slog off his bowling that raced to the boundary! I was only 17 years old. It put a big crack in the edge of it and he wasn't happy. I said, sorry, but that's a good bat! th-cam.com/video/dePXa0aXPJw/w-d-xo.html

Botham was a bludgeoning intimidating colossus of a player, once he got the bit between his teeth anything was possible.so many times either with bat or ball he could turn a game on its head when all looked lost. His batting was brutal when in full flow, and even the Great bowlers of the time found intimidating by his awesome big hitting and power,, nothing was safe when he got on top. He could also have blistering spells with the ball, he was ferocious and nasty and even the Great batsmen of the time hated facing him when he got his tail up. Yes Both was a fierce competitor and a brilliant exciting player. LEGEND

Lovely thing is, against Australia even the Australian commentators enjoyed his batting, bowling and 'bravado'. Had the privelige of watching one of his last international one day innings at the MCG. He was clapped on by the capacity crowd and even though he didn't score that well, went off to a standing ovation!.

Australia had 3 no. 11 batsmen all playing in the same team on this day (Reid, Whitney, Davis). Little wonder that Australia had a brittle batting line-up back then. I can't remember if any of them were required to bat, but I do remember Ken Maclaey's bad day getting worse that night when John Emburey took a screamer of a catch on the boundary line fence off a ball which looked headed for a six. I remember Ian Botham's innings too. The match was in the balance when he came to the wicket and he took it completely away from the Australians with some relentless strokeplay against what was a relatively stingy Australian bowling attack at that time. This probably explains why they had 3 no. 11 batsmen in their team.

Whitney was a great bowler, but he was a total pillock when it came to Botham. For instance, he was a pillock in 1981 when he dropped Botham at Manchester, the latter then going on to smash a magnificent hundred taking the game away from the Aussies (he also got Botham out and celebrated like he'd just taken eight wickets: Rod Marsh was not impressed). Here, five years later, you'd think he'd have learnt. Botham smashes for six over mid off and Whitney then proceeds to sledge the shit out of the guy. I remember wishing I could tell the idiot: "Mike, Mike, he's just clobbered you mate. I'd keep your mouth shut if I were you or he might do it again." Face palms all round.

Don’t know why they didn’t have boundary ropes in Australia. So dangerous. Also most of the boundary catches would have easily gone over the boundary rope.

With all that, Botham still took 32 balls to reach his 50. Distinctly ho hum these days, even at international level. Didnt Moeen add 50 to his score in 10 balls in an ODI once?

The lights aren't on yet but the spotlight is on Ian Botham...oh Maxy you were really the class clown of cricket commentators...hilarious on every level...incredible how terrible Australia still were in 1986. Yet March 2007 with the World Cup, everything turned around

100-2 after 25, so you'd expect how many after another 9? 150, 160, more? Yes, 130! Fair enough though, 80 odd came off the next 10.
