    Brearley used Boycott as bowler because, according to his excellent book Art of Captaincy', he (Boycott) used to be a very useful bowler in the Sunday League competition and, in humid conditions, could swing the ball as much as anyone. In a Sunday league game just a few weeks before he had bowling figures of 2-5 off 4 overs!!

And that was the time almost every cricketer was playing country cricket regularly. Certainly pakistani team is the most un predicted side from day 1. I was actually there in June 79(! .. not 83!!) and what a superb atmosphere marred a few times by a little ridiculous trouble on the terraces between the morons on both sides.. police dogs were called in and we had the inevitable invasion by the Pakistanis which was common in the 70s and 80s( Thank god security is better ).. back to the match , as an england fan , I thought we were dead and buried .. Bob Taylor played a vital role with bat and glove but Hendrick was sensational.. his best spell ever in an england shirt . By the time Zaheer was out and they were six down I had to down a pint fast to believe this was happening . And Boycott as a bowler . In truth Pakistan should have won when Imran Khan was playing sensibly keeping sikhander Bakht off strike with a few runs to get BUT a rush of blood, a catch by Hendrick off Boycott !, I recall Imran being utterly furious with Bakht who cost them the game,
    If england had lost I don’t think they would have made the final
    Still a great CWC memory

    Okay someone tell me if I’m imagining this or it’s true: the boundary line appears to be far away from the pitch - folks were able to easily run four runs while fielders gave the ball a long chase. Nowadays the boundary appears to be so short. Isn’t there a uniform rule in cricket that the boundary has to be a certain distance from the pitch?

    Who else thought Bob Willis the more deserving of the Man of the Match award? 24 runs (sharing a 43 run stand with Bob Taylor) and then 1-37 off his 11 overs (removing the dangerous Asif Iqbal). He was probably more reason why England won the game rather than lost it!!

    • @atherqadeer2570
      @atherqadeer2570 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I agree first his vital contribution with the bat and than he removed Asif Iqbal who was batting so well and that was the decisive wicket

      165 would still be not enough if Hendricks had not bowl that well Early in the innings. You cannot defend 165 in 60 overs those days as well despite taking wickets regularly. But yes England came back in the game with Willis's innings and wicket

      England had prepared an extremely seaming wicket for their home conditions. 4 times out of 5 in more normal conditions this 1979 Pakistan team would have been beaten England. In the first ever ODI in 1974 Oakistsn thrashed England with Majid Khan spanking 109 with century in 88 balls. England got very lucky in 1979.

Hendricks got very nice action with high arm. Some how with a such talent this tall english bowler could not shine. Zaheer played without specs on his eyes .But it looks like a classy test match than one day international.

      But it was Sikander Bakht who played that terrible shot when he was required to just to stay there. Asif Iqbal's sensible innings had put Pakistan back in the match and Imran batting with a cool head would have easily scored the 15 runs required in 4 overs and out of which 3 overs were to be bowled by non-regular bowlers
