Just 165 off 60 overs! So different to modern ODI's, but it was more enjoyable to watch because the bowlers were in the game (not just cannon fodder) and the batsmen played proper strokes!

Both sides got their overs in quickly too. Pakistan bowled at just over 16 overs per hour (possibly helped by Majid's overs). England bowled at 15.5 overs per hour (despite Willis's long run up) Compare that with today's sides.

A few months later this Pak side was to visit India. Turned out to be Asif Iqbal's final series. Also Majid and Sadiq rarely opened together after that series. The brilliant performance from Pakistan came from Wasim Raja who virtually played a lone hand. At times supported by Miandad.

Yes, the match never felt like a 1 day game. The run rate was only 2.7 throughout the whole day - slower than most days of modern test cricket!! yet it was absorbing to watch (I'm sure equally as exciting to watch it live). The over rates are what struck me most. Pakistan bowled at 16 overs per hour and England just over 15.5 overs per hour.

I remember i read in pakistani cricket magazine “Akhbar-e-Watan”,Sikander Bakht quoted that Imran Khan was confident to get remaining runs and he again and again asked Sikander Bakht not to play big shot and just rotate the strike. But Sikander played a silly shot and got.He wrote اف خان صاحب کا چہرہ۔۔ that Imran Khan’s face was red with anger.Sikander after getting out ran to dressing room and tried his best to avoid Imran Khan who was furious over his silly shot.

I was actually there in June 79(! .. not 83!!) and what a superb atmosphere marred a few times by a little ridiculous trouble on the terraces between the morons on both sides.. police dogs were called in and we had the inevitable invasion by the Pakistanis which was common in the 70s and 80s( Thank god security is better ).. back to the match , as an england fan , I thought we were dead and buried .. Bob Taylor played a vital role with bat and glove but Hendrick was sensational.. his best spell ever in an england shirt . By the time Zaheer was out and they were six down I had to down a pint fast to believe this was happening . And Boycott as a bowler . In truth Pakistan should have won when Imran Khan was playing sensibly keeping sikhander Bakht off strike with a few runs to get BUT a rush of blood, a catch by Hendrick off Boycott !, I recall Imran being utterly furious with Bakht who cost them the game,
If england had lost I don’t think they would have made the final
    Still a great CWC memory

The pakistan team is a very good spearheaded by Imran, Sarfraz, Sikandar Bakth and top class batsman Zaheer, Majid, Asif , Mustaq, Wasim raja. But Hendricks did the magic. Hendricks got very nice action with high arm. Some how with a such talent this tall english bowler could not shine. Zaheer played without specs on his eyes .But it looks like a classy test match than one day international.

look at the pak batting line. wasim raja coming at number 8 and imran khan coming at 9. still not able to chase 165. And that was the time almost every cricketer was playing country cricket regularly. Certainly pakistani team is the most un predicted side from day 1. When they are favorites they usually lose and when they are considered under dogs, they surprise every one by defeating any team any time.

England had prepared an extremely seaming wicket for their home conditions. 4 times out of 5 in more normal conditions this 1979 Pakistan team would have been beaten England. In the first ever ODI in 1974 Oakistsn thrashed England with Majid Khan spanking 109 with century in 88 balls. England got very lucky in 1979.
