Paul ive just been overhauling my 1987, new head, crank, and what a misson. Nearly there now, feel for you. But one thing, do share rebuild, because no real rebuilds on youtube 😢
A sad video, paul I knew there was a problem with it probably not the outcome you were hoping for, but one thing for sure is if you rebuild the engine, you know it's going to be right I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next with the mighty perkins keep up the excellent work pal 👍 😊
Thank you Benny .. yes very sad 😥 I was hoping for the best or maybe an easy fix, but this is going to be far from easy, we need to think of a plan of what to do next with our trusty 3CX 💪
R.I.P Allan , Lorry Driver sadly missed . I did a phaser engine in a 1989 3cx 2 years ago new lliners pistons rings and bearings ect in frame Paul no probs I made a liner puller I ccould lend you it mate 👍
Nick .. Allan was a great man and helped me any time I needed him. He will indeed be sadly missed R.I.P Allan 🙏 I will keep you in mind should I need any help with the trusty SiteMaster in the future - thank you very much! 👌👍
@@deezelfairy I know, I was just hoping that the rocker was all I needed to change, in my mind I knew I would have to do more than change the rocker, worth trying the easy stuff first before pulling the engine, or the head 🤞
Not the result we all waited for, but now, it's no looking back and start removing and tearing that engine. Best of luck. You can do it Paul! Stay positive!
Big shame Hartley! That engine was a sweet running Perkins 1004-4T. It will have to come out and be investigated. Second engine this year Iv had to pull - thinking back eariler in the year when we pulled the V8 out of the Range Rover! 🙄👍
Thank you Gary from Crewe. Keep watching a commenting. We get involved with all different jobs around the country using our classic equipment when we can 💪👌👍
I don't want to teach Granny to suck eggs, but you should make sure you get the engine to TDC when doing the tappets. Otherwise you could be adjusting on the quietening ramps of the camshaft. To find TDC make sure 4 is 'rocking' when adjusting 1., and vice versa. Likewise 2 and 3 are a couple. Hope you save that 3cx for posterity...1
I really hope this isn't the end of your legendary 3CX. Once it's sorted, would it be worth getting a spare engine built up?. Don't worry, I've got no problem help spending others cash!.😜😆
I really hope this is not the end. These Perkins 1004-4T engines are long lasting, a rebuilt engine could last 20 years or more if looked after, would it really be worth having another 'spare' engine, just in case? If I could get a good one for cheap, maybe 🤷♀️ 😊
Ah that’s a pain .. I thought you might get away with just the rocker … on the up side the Perkins 1000 series is a fairly simple beast .. Might be time to pull her down and check the motor …
@ I’m changing the water pump tomorrow on my P8 with the Perkins 1000 series.. I’m Hoping and praying the 2 bolts that go into the timing case don’t snap ..
The P8 maybe easier to change than the P7. When I changed the water pump on mine, I ended up pulling out the radiator - not a two minute job. Good luck and hope all goes well 👍
@@PSExcavationsLLC Water pump went well and thankfully being carful managed to get the bolts out without snapping any .. Made such good time even got the dipper ram re sealed also …
Thats is a good one to check, I checked the crankcase breather and it was clear, I go under the machine regularly to check things under there, good time to grease the drive shafts too! 👍
Don't get me wrong it was a good digger and a massive step up from he 3c mk11 we had before lighter and with the 4wd it rarely got stuck on site unlike the 3c. Definitely better off storing older stuff under a lean to though.
Perkins phaser not the best engine. The work places these machines are typically amongst wouldn’t know what an oil & filter change is So not good really.
I dont find Perkins to be a bad engine, Iv owned a lot worse then the Perkins! Any engine with poor service and maintainance will not do well and could lead to a shortens life. What would be a better engine that JCB could have used in the 3CX? Remember JCB used Leyland before the better Perkins 😊
Agree with what you said I had a fordson tractor with a Perkins P6 which was well looked after Started immediately in a sharp frost . Lack of servicing is the problem with your digger. Have the engine rebuilt properly or find a good used engine I guess
Not sure of the service history in its early life as I didnt buy this 3CX from new. All I can say is that any lack of servicing must have happened before I took over ownership, I am very meticulous with that kind of thing. This engine did have over 11,000 hours, 36 years of service before failing. I dont think thats too bad, what should this Perkins engine have done before failing in this way? 🤔
Yes and the 4/98 is a bloody good engine ,and easy to work on if needed the 236 or 248 are good when going ,biggest problem is getting them going .not a nice engine to work on .@@PSExcavationsLLC
i can clearly see valve 7 is sticking up but you didnt notice it and how you set the valve clearance up is a poor way always do the rule of 9 way is best as you were turning it over you could of been 180 degrees
The valve is not 'clearly sticking' and may look that way in the video, it was operating fine and as normal with the eye. The way I set the valve clearance is also fine. I have many years of experience working with this type of engine, turning the engine over by hand, looking and feeling what is happening inside, I cant see how I would have got this wrong! A novice could potentially get this wrong by 180 degrees so the rule of 9 would be a better way to adjust valve clearance - I should have explained this more in the video. 👍
Arguably the best version of the 3CX JCB ever built, hope you can save her.
Very good machine 1988-1991 Project 7. I will do my best to save the one I have ..
Paul ive just been overhauling my 1987, new head, crank, and what a misson. Nearly there now, feel for you. But one thing, do share rebuild, because no real rebuilds on youtube 😢
You have, wow ... hope it all turns out good when finished. I will share what I decide to do 😊

My man, a rocker doesnt break for no reason.
@@deezelfairy I know, I was just hoping that the rocker was all I needed to change, in my mind I knew I would have to do more than change the rocker, worth trying the easy stuff first before pulling the engine, or the head 🤞
Very rare occurrence in my experience! Must be a valve sticking?
Not the result we all waited for, but now, it's no looking back and start removing and tearing that engine. Best of luck. You can do it Paul! Stay positive!
Its not the result I wanted - thats for sort. But we have to move forward with these things, its just which direction we move now ... 🙄
Shame it wasn’t just that , yeah reckon now you got to take the head off , just as well rebuild, very interesting vid .👍

I would be very surprised if a valve was bent on a 2 valve per cylinder setup, the valve would often seat themselves with a little use,
I know what you're saying, I just dont know what to think at this point. Possible valve train issue - we will all find out 👍
My 3cx was spiting oil , Turned out that the crankase vent tube was blocked and the oil was coming out of the turbo .
Thats is a good one to check, I checked the crankcase breather and it was clear, I go under the machine regularly to check things under there, good time to grease the drive shafts too! 👍
Is that Butler on the plant lorry?
😊
¿Sabe alguien a que presión hay que tarar los inyectores? Yo tengo una con 14.000 horas y va fenomenal.
It should be around the 1800psi area, this pressure is from other mechanical injectors Iv tested in the past
@PSExcavationsLLC gracias.
Service Ex Engine !!
That an idea! Thanks Alex 👍
Hi u need a full engine rebuild
Its looking that way 👍
Bit of bad luck there but still beter off rebuilding the old girl , modern stuf is far worse, anything past project 12
Very bad luck Robert, rebuilding is the direction I will be going, I really dont get along owning modern stuff
We had a project 7 brand new ,not a bad digger but the electrics on it were absolutely shit
Not really had electrical issues, maybe you was unlucky to have one with issues ?
