    Most people who are buying an estate car want to see the luggage area, rear seat space etc., missed from this vid. Air con can be adjusted by voice command- probably the safest way..
    I drove the old model back last year for 3 months on a short term work contract and was highly impressed by its value, comfort, refinement and space. This one appears to build on those features, plus it’s a good looking car and a big step forward in desirability.

      I have to disagree with voice commands being the "safest way" to manage the AC.
      Voice recognition systems are notorious for struggling with accents, even when the speaker has a voice that is very clear to other human beings.
      Meanwhile, a traditional physical control only requires you to be able to reach it. And because it's in a fixed location, it's possible to develop the muscle memory to be able to use it without taking your eyes off the road at all. At worst, a well laid out physical control will only require a quick glance.

    Love my 3rd gen Octavia. Moved to it after owning a car with full touch screen controls and having dials and switches is by far the best option. This is a classic example of an industry pushing forward with an idea that the majority of consumers dislike. They look good, but touch screen controls for key functionality like climate control is a dangerous step backwards. I'm sticking with my older model for as long as I can.

    Thank god they converted the centre console for RHD cars. It's been a bug bear of mine with the mk3 having the cup holder beside the driver and handbrake beside the passenger. I would've liked the 2 buttons on the infotainment screen to have been beside the driver but I don't think the new Golf does either.
    What I noted not covered in this review is engines developing 150hp or more will have independent rear suspension, engines under 150hp will have torsion beam.

      VAG is cost cutting, simple as that. When you put everything in a touch screen you can save a couple cents in R&D and production by not having to design and produce individual buttons. Consumers can't really do much about car trends besides drive trains and body styles, for "small" things like ergonomics consumers won't switch brands.

    Love the look of this and as a former owner I'm very interested....however seriously put off by that touch screen.
    Seems ridiculous that using a phone is illegal yet manufacturers are allowed to provision touch only screens instead of retaining simple dials. All in the name of savings manufacturing costs but sold as something desirable. Voice control is no argument - another added distraction and doesn't work well in a car full of chattering people.

    why are people still comparing the Octavia to hatchbacks like the golf and the focus, the new Scala goes up against those and other hatchbacks. Where as the Octavia is more in the line of family liftback saloons like the Mondeo, Audi A3 saloon and BMW 3 Series as well as the C Class. And the Superb also goes up against those the Octavia does but also the A6 and 5 series as well as the E Class, in terms of space and practicality that is and not luxury to an extent

    • @EinkOLED

      The Octavia is similarly priced and the saloon version has a hatchback style boot.

    • @runawayronnie
      @runawayronnie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because it's exactly the same car as a Golf, same engines, same chassis. It's only the body that's changed. But then you say it as a hatchback should be compared to family liftback saloons like A3 saloon and a 3 series and C-Class? Sorry, never in a million years can I see why it would be compared to those. A 3series or C-Class estate perhaps but saloon?

    • @harleyrobertson73
      @harleyrobertson73 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@runawayronnie I see what you mean, on the other hand though, the boot on the Octavia is similar in shape, size and style to other saloons where as the Scala is more like the golf and focus, if you go by boot space the Octavia is 200 litres which is way bigger than any hatchback where as the Scala more closely competes with other hatchbacks. As for the chassis the same chassis for the golf is on the Passat, superb and Scala as well as SUVs and roadsters and convertibles so the chassis doesn't make a car this body style or that body style......it's used for everything

    Why is it illegal to use a mobile phone when driving but car companies can put what is effectively a large mobile phone on the dash. This should be banned. I guess this is another example of the politicians not being sensible. Please politicians ban this! I will never buy a car with touch screens like this. They are annoying to use and need constant cleaning to remove finger prints. Bring back buttons and stop being so incredibly stupid.
    And boy is the front of this car ugly!
    Please when you review cars can you comment on the security aspects and point a camera at the dash when you are driving. I really want to know which companies are taking security seriously. I went into a Kia showroom and asked how I could disable the keyless entry feature and they looked at me as if I was crazy. All car reviewers talk to the camera when what you want to see is the car especially how good the dash is and what the view out the front and rear is like rather than looking at the reviewer.
    So car companies seem to think we want dangerous touch screens and keyless entry to make it easy for people to steal the car. It seems to me that it would be so easy to put a slider switch on the side of the key to just turn off keyless entry when you are not using the car. But I guess they can't even think of the idea of a button. Maybe they will do it when they can put a touch screen on the key.
    Please please tell me they are not going to be so stupid as to use a mobile phone as a key in future!

    • @jacobthompson8507
      @jacobthompson8507 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree. Luckily I’ve managed to disable Keyless Entry on my Audi, but not on my Volvo. Previous gen Mercedes have exactly what you’re on about, you can take out the start/stop button and behind it is a slot for the key fob... which I feel most people prefer.
      Some Manufactures clearly don’t care about their customers and just want to “show off” innovative tech, which is frankly useless to operate on the move.
      My Volvo has an iPad type screen which controls pretty much everything - climate, nav, etc - and although I’ve got used to it, it’s much more distracting than my Audi’s MMI rotary controller system.
      Manufactures need to realise interior aesthetics isn’t everything these days... and don’t get me started on the trend of huge grilles.
