  • This model 6788 is part of International Harvester’s 2+2 series tractors. The 6788 replaced the 3788 in 1983, followed by the 70 series tractors in 1984, the last in the 2 plus 2 series. When the J. I. Case Company purchased the agricultural division in 1985, it ceased production on all tractor models International Harvester had in development.
    A total of 347 of the model 6788 were built in Rock Island, Illinois with an original price tag of $70,500 in 1984 or about $174,000 in 2018 dollars. It has a 200 horsepower 7.6 Liter 6-Cylinder International Harvester Diesel Engine that can do 142 horsepower on the drawbar and weighing in at about 16,900 pounds. The transmission has 12 forward gears and 6 reverse gears with on the move power shift. Visit classictractorstv.com/about/ today for more Classic Tractor Fever! In the late 70’s we needed another tractor for our dairy farm in southeast Minnesota. The 2+2 series was new and I had studied the brochure well,,, and I was 12. My dad had me call around to IH dealers to see who had which model 2+2’s, which options and what price. I remember at least one salesman not taking me seriously and asking what dairy farm I was on and he didn’t recognize the family name. My dad was on the Minnesota Dairy Promotion Board and was good at giving speeches, he was fairly well known in the area. After my multiple calls one dealer had a 3388 for $33,000. I was hoping for another one at another dealership which had the auxiliary fuel tank and rear differential lock, but it cost more. I got to put in a fair amount of hours on it including pulling the corn chopper because I knew not to fill the back of the Gehl wagons full or else the floor feeder chain would break. The farm was sold in 1981 to Con Man Clement.

    I put a rear end in that tractor for the previous owner, that tractor will run for a long time.

    Very few 70 series 2+2 were built. Some were assembled from left over parts on the halted production line. CaseIH sold them for far below list price because they wont be supported.

    Why did Case cease production of the 2+2 design?
    Were there design flaws?

      Some might say so, but these machines weren't built to take the same amount of abuse as say a big old Steiger, they were more versatile than that. The back end is basically an IH standard tractor of the time, coupled with a bespoke, but still comparatively cheap front end assembly, housing the fuel tank in the rear half, and the engine up front. IH st the time, as with many other tractor manufacturers, was undergoing some financial difficulties due to the market of the time. The 'Snoopy' was some out of the box thinking, by the IH Engineers, for not that much more money than their standard high horsepower two wheel drive models of the same era. I think they are an iconic machine, much maligned, wrongly so in my opinion. With IH being merged with Case, there was way too many individual tractor models in the line up, and so rationalisation was the order of the day. The 2+2s were sadly a victim of this policy. On the other hand, the transmission IH had been working on prior to the merger was used as the basis for the gearbox in subsequent Case Magnums, as it was superior to the equivilent Case transmissions of the time.

    Correction when Tenneco merged case with IH . Case did not buy IH .

    • @tshoff1013
      @tshoff1013 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correction. Tenneco was the Parent Company of Case (All one Company just different names) and it merged the IH Agricultural Division into Case (Tenneco) forming Case IH. All one pot of money. Case (Tenneco) and Tenneco (Case) bought IH in 1984 and introduced the Magnum in 1985.

      Correct the correction. JI Case was financially unwell when they were purchased. You are correct, Tenneco was the parent company of JI Case. They (Tenneco) put the JI Case managment in charge of the merger. IH had what we kno as the magnum mostly done, set to be introduced in the Fall of '85. Case soon found this out after Tenneco acquired IH and chose to build off that platform by changing the hood, engine, rear axles and wheels, and the cab front. There was a few refinements needed to make the transmission shift nicer.
      The frame, front axle both MFD and 2wd, entire cab... less the dash and steering wheel cap, entire rear end, clutch, hydraulics, 18 speed transmission, and 3 point hitch were all of IH design built off the 88 series tractors. There is a tractor in Nebraska that proves this to be true. The magnum was not released until 1987

      This is not a "correct the correction" reply you are just telling a story that everyone already knows. The new Case IH Magnum was introduced to dealers at Denver in 1985.

    • @trentphillips9238
      @trentphillips9238 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was telling you the story because you seemed to not be as informed as you should be for correcting someone else. The tractor you are referring to is the red painted Case tractor which was used to get Case Ih by until the magnum was introduced.
