Accounting is good because it is a solid major that allows you to branch into a variety of business avenues. At the same time, if you have a decent amount of debt and do not want student loans looming over your head you have a solid degree that can pay the bills in a tough economy.

Anyone from Plymouth University watching this? Was I the only one who found it just a little fake and patronising? Fake smiles, fake interviews and monotone questions and answers. We are in the right profession.
Most accountants do not work in those sort of environments and also do not earn that sort of money. Average qualified is about £40K if you exclude London, 60K with London, but most people in The City tend to be management consultants or similar profession and they skew the average salaries. A good profession but not as lucrative as many seem to think. For those where it is all about the money investment banking is what those chaps need. Your basic bonus will be more than 5 years of my salary.
If you're naturally decent with figures (don't have to be the best but can achieve a good grade at high school) it's a good career to get into. I work for a pretty big bank and worked in the UK then got the opportunity to move abroad. I make good money and the job is alright. It's not what I dreamed of but I wanted to be a football player, didn't manage so this will do! I get to live a good, comfortable life with a job I don't hate and I get good family time at the weekends. Plus you can go as high as you want with a bit of effort. Finally, you can do self employed work on the side or set up your own business.
A friend of mine is 50's and studying accountancy and I know a returner from children also just started mid 40's. It really is a career which suits any age range. In fact in industry I would say most accountants tend to be older. All the bright young things start out in practice as I did so do not let age be a barrier.
I want to study for a career where you don't really have to interact with clients. I want to have a career behind a desk with the work in front of you and no one bothers you. Is Accounting a good choice for that?
Every work on earth involves people interaction. For some, you interact with partners or suppliers. However, they are just as complicated and problematic or even more compared to customers. Actuary or Tech analyst or whatever still have to talk to clients, managers, and colleagues. No one works alone in the today competitive world. The least communicative jobs are those tradies like brick laying where you just focus on doing a nice job.

I don't think anyone would. But some find it okay or very okay. Accountants have a perception that work is not fun, because if it is it is not work. Another one is there is always a conflict of interest between boss and employee. This job is very opposite to marketing. Anw, it is a professional job.
Daniel Huynh That is the downside. I'm sitting on this dilemma whether it's worth to have a nice income, be respect by your clients but go through life unhappy, and in some cases even depressed. Tesla She would choose it again. She learnt lots of business techniques information from it. Her accounting was very necessary for her and my family. We have 6 properties now.
