Flying in IMC back to Wichita KS | We get a SHOUT-OUT from ATC!

  • Janis and I are on our return flight from Ruston, Louisiana to Wichita, Kansas after visited Janis' dad for the 4th of July. We had a great visit and ate some great food. Weather delayed our takeoff due to some pop-up thunderstorms, although we still flew a lot of this flight in IMC and had one area we requested a deviation as I couldn't see through the wall of rain or the ground, Nexrad showed a small red cell along our path, but it was about 12 minutes old and what it was showing looked far less ominous than what we were seeing out the window. Couple that with we would have passed into that area in hard IMC, we elected to take a more conservative approach and simply go around it. Which only added a few minutes to the overall flight.

I liked this video so much that I watched it twice! Great example of picking up an IFR clearance at a non towered airport. Ron, I like how you verbally call key items during various phases of flight. Janis is a very skilled non pilot passenger. She is a great example of how an experienced non pilot can be a great asset in the cockpit. You guys have great CRM working together. Your videos are a great blend of the flying journey and the fun activities at the destination. It was fun to hear the ATC shout out to Parr 4 The Course. Folks are watching y'all!. I would never expect a bug at 8000! That is a first for me. Finally, it is nice to see Janis is still sporting the latest pair of sunglasses. How many weeks has this pair lasted?

Thanks Jeff, ha for watching it twice!!! Somehow I ended up editing out: "On-Instruments" as I say that prior to entering IMC to focus my attention on instruments before entering IMC . Janis helps out more than she knows, not sure i could manage a flight without her as she has become an asset in the cockpit!
Ironically, Janis received a one-year anniversary letter from Warby Parker, I still cant believe she hasn't broken them yet! Its becoming a a joke now as everybody wants to know how her sunglasses are holding up-HA! I'm CHEAP, but appreciate VALUE and i hate to admit it, they have paid for themselves!!

Thanks Kevin, the deviation most likely wasn't absolutely necessary, however I KNEW before we would get to that location we would be in hard IMC, and if hard IMC or IMC at night, I would only trust on-board radar. I know some think that SiriusXM Satellite is pretty good, but for me in those conditions not quite good enough, as a fast developing thunderstorm would render that as outdated information as well, just my $0.02 though!

Sad statistics are that VFR only pilots that fly into IMC (Clouds/Rain, etc.) have approximately 178 seconds to get out of it or it typically ends in a fatality!
