I feel like Jake Gyllenhaal needed no persuasion at all to do this role
this ain’t even a role he’s just being himself
I think he may have thought it was way too normal and not far enough out there. :-)
@@tylkoniejulka6629 i genuinely felt that too. Maybe it was great writing, but he seemed to enjoy it so much
@@MHilstrom Mulaney wrote for SNL for years and helped make Stefon and he's good at writing kooky off-beat characters
Check Jimmy Fallon, John Milanese talked about it
John Mulaney: "can you play this role"
Jake Gyllenhaal: "sure how much do I pay you"
I'M HOWLING
Why does this have 2.3k likes and only two comments?
@@themorrigan7702 the comment's so perfect i'm not sure how to "yes, and" it
Quite comical, but this is not the version of events that took place
Also, does your insurance cover mental trauma? Just in case.
"Is Mr. Music okay?"
"No, Mr. Music is not okay. He's having a lot of trouble."
Jake must have studied what it's like to be on cocaine, or have the brain of Marc Maron.
2:48
@@toastedjoe1013 right i'm sure jake "studied" the effects of cocaine
I just put it to 2k
Big Mood
Jake Gyllenhaal's range makes him a little scary.
you should watch some his old movies
And the list of his films...
I have been a bit scared of his acting since watching Donnie Darko. Now I am fully scared.
Before I clicked on this I was literally just watching him in the zodiac movie lol.
And hot
one of the kids just called him Dad and then it's never explained or mentioned again
mazie LMAO i noticed that too
I just assumed they put his daughter in the sketch. Didn't bother to check cause I barely care halfway about work acquaintances kids, children of a celebrity are even less interesting.
I think it's a callback to the bit from earlier in the show
@@LC-sc3en It's not his real daughter, genius.
@@suicidesquid3581 how was I supposed to know that? I only know his name because it is in the video title.
do not let taika watiti and this man be in the same room
Or or or or let themmmmm
I think you mean please put these two crackheads together
That would be amazing!! My favorite actor and favorite director together is my dream
OMG PLEASE
Melanie Cast youre giving them ideas....
mr music has aggressive '3am existential crisis' energy
yes sishtar
Super manic!
You know the struggle, too?
That's convenient guess what time I'm watching this for the first time?
It’s impressive to be able to make a joke about someone else when it’s really about yourself and land it, and I say that non sarcastically
We love a man who commits 150% to even the smallest role. I don't think I'll ever forget seeing this.
Exactly what I was gonna say!
I feel like Jake Gyllenhaal needed no persuasion at all to do this role
@@andrewlam8580 he didn’t lol Mulaney confirmed
"Am I supposed to do an hour?"
"No no who told you that?"
"I CAN do an hour!"
"ABSOLUTELY NOT"
After learning that Jake did the song live because he had no time to record it because he was doing Sea Wall / A Life, I love it even more
Paula Arielle Luco Bravo bruh WHAT?? how did i not know this?? a KING
I wish Hollywood people would dare to do that more often. Reality trumps fake „perfection“ every time
Aritosthenes donnie darko, nightcrawler, and mysterio
John Morley no mention of end of watch?
@@squattingheads It’s not very common because it’s not super practical or efficient with the way film sets normally run. Generally actors are expected to spend entire 12 hour days on the same scene doing it over over and and over again because on top of just doing it until it feels right, you’re also setting up the same scene to be shot from different angles. If you’re singing live, that’s a lot of strain on your voice to do it that many times (and even more so if there’s a dance routine involved that you also have to do repeatedly). It’s also a lot of extra work for editors and sound mixers to take all of those takes and blend singing audio from them to make it all match and hide the illusion that different pieces of it were recorded at different times (which is not an easy task to do well). Working to a pre-recorded track also gives the lighting and camera team more freedom because they don’t have to worry about where the mics need to go. This piece is very much an exception to the rule because everything plays out in static single shots without any complicated lighting or choreography and there are little breaks built into the music and the scene so he doesn’t have to give off the impression that he’s been singing the entire time. It also means he was likely not spending more than 2 or 3 takes on each 30 second part of the song so it all sounds much cleaner and more cohesive live. Live singing for film can be done well, but is a very high risk, high reward style situation because it introduces a lot of technical complication to a process that’s already very technically complicated.
"I stayed up late trying on clothes I already own"
That one hit a little too close to home.
That is what I do at 3am instead of homework
The best line in the entire special.
Good thing he said that....
Haha I know, that was so sweet!
i love how his mustache is just casually falling off half the time
Funny, they were trying to keep it on, but it kept falling off so they were like you know what, we will go with it
Halarious
If you told me this was completely unscripted and Jake just showed up to set and did this I would 100% believe you.
Not unscripted, but unrehearsed and in one take. He was busy doing other films and had very little time free.
he didnt knew how to play it ...he tried different styles and then landed in the "1995" the mask behaviour ...and it was MAGNIFICENT !!!
we gotta credit composer eli bolin though!
PEPSIMAX2022 I don't think that's true, according to Mulaney. On the Fallon show he said when Jake got to set he asked him how he wanted the part to be played and John told him his first choice was Harry Belafonte in 1961(obviously impossible), so Jake said do you want me to have a Caribbean accent? John said no that's kinda problematic, so Jake went ok what if I go with a European guy trying to sound like he's from the Caribbean? John said genius and this was the result
When he stepped on glass I wish he said mother trucker dued that hurt like a buttcheeck on a stick . 😂😂😂
"Follow me! - but also give me space" Yeah that's me.
Lol
Jake Gyllenhaal's look of unadulterated joy when he realizes "Nobody cares" speaks to my soul
That realization you have in your early 20s
“I’m making music, you’re ignorant!” Haha
Good times
@@cordeliacomando3241 Oh wow, it's you! You were great in this.
@@tegrenath thank you 😍
I love how Jake is doing his nightcrawler face
Omg I knew I'm not the only one seeing his Nightcrawler side showing
wait what...
That’s just his faceYOU’RE IGNORANT!
Me, going to like this comment only to realize that I've unliked it, because apparently me of the past also agreed with this comment and liked it then, too.
I thought the sack lunch bunch was enjoyable and then Mr. Music entered the frame and I suddenly was witnessing a masterpiece.
Jake Gyllenhaal should win a emmy for this.
Oh yes!!
He really should haha
I just want to mention that Mr. Gyllenhaal's clarinet skills are much better than they appear here. When he tooted, there was no reed on the instrument. That's pretty impressive.
sorry can you pls explain what that means? i know nothing about clarinets 😂
@@karena4684 The bit that makes the sound on the clarinet is missing, which means they must have added the sound at the end in post. So it's a failed attempt at mimicking failure xD -I loved the irony so much that I had to make an ironic statement of my own :)
Magic here, magic there, a magical clarinet played by Jake.
Rasmus n.e.M oh hahaha okay, that makes sense! sorry if i ruined your joke! 🤦🏽♀️
@@karena4684 Np. The great thing about youtube jokes is that replies are not as visible as comments.
They really just gave Jake a bunch of coke and went “alright, out on the stage you go”
pearlwingdraws they didn’t need to, this is how jake is on daily basis
i wish i could like your comment twice.
Didn’t need coke, just pushed him out on stage and said “go nuts!”
Worked for Robin Williams
he just be like that....
You all realize that this wasn’t acting right? This is just Jake Gyllenhaal in his natural habitat
He just showed up on the set and they happened to be recording
Does that make this a documentary?
"Even a cat can bat a TUUUUNE!...
... do it".
"meaw..."
that was actually adorable
The cat cooperated. I hope it got paid!
Did someone say tuna?
Jake Gyllenhaal has that crackhead energy, that's why we love him!
chaotic good
Genuinely one of the greatest things that John Mulaney has gifted this world.
“It’s okay, I know him.”
Just noticed at 6:57 he takes the clarinet and says “I want this I’m keeping this”
Grace H 😂😂😂😍
It’s like “don’t hug me I’m scared” but not as scary.
I was just texting my friend the same thing
i think if cocaine were a person, it would be jake gyllenhaal
"I'm making music! You're ignorant!" I laugh out loud every time
John Mulaney nails that "Child entertainer who quietly hates his life" vibe.
John to the kids: "It's ok...I know him..." 😂
I don’t know if John actually made this show for kids or if the advertising was a joke, either way it was very entertaining for someone who is not a child
half the time it came across as a show made for kids and half the time it came across as a parody of a show made for kids lol
Amanda Boone exactly
Based on some of the topics/language, I'd say its ironic. Plus it's a spoof of 80s/90s kids shows, so kids these days wouldn't get it.
@@AmandaBee So, it's Pee Wee's Playhouse filtered through Don't Hug Me I'm Scared and TV Funhouse (this short-lived Comedy Central show based on Rob Smigel's cartoons he did for SNL in the mid-to-late 1990s).
If you think they did well, it was a genuine kids show
If you didn't, its ironic and meant to be like that
*This is the funniest version of Jake Gyllenhaal i’ve ever seen* 😂
HAHAHA HAHAHA I WAS CRINGING SO HARD AT THE BAD ACCENT BUT IT GOT SO GOOD 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Then you must see Okja!
gyllenhaalic4jake, Elizabeth Gyllenhaal
i’ll check it out, thanks! ✌️
only him could look that good in those clothes
Christian Ureña the thing is that’s just a more colorful version of one of Michael Jackson’s outfits
He*
That jacket is fire tbh
That mustache gives me nightmares, but Jake Gyllenhaal is talented at playing the weirdest of characters.
“Dad...” Kid in the back: “dad???😦”
I missed that, what's the time stamp?
Aria Grace 5:16
The kids around her when she said "dad"
👁👄👁
It’s because it was done in one take I think. Or so I heard.
The part where he is tap dancing on the bed had me in tears. The lyrics, the faces, the choreography, the dynamics; it’s pure gold. 3:40
Is this another version of Mysterio from the Multiverse?
The flash is also there
@@Bob-pu5jw John Mulaney and Grant Guston are not the same person even though they look similar.
@@LoveNeko64 I'm referring to this video
th-cam.com/video/L941SgWJRv4/w-d-xo.html
Yes it is
MAKE THIS CANON, MARVEL
I know he primarily does drama, but Jake Gyllenhaal seriously needs to do more comedy. He nails it.
RIGHT?!
@@jednakniezofia Seriously. You see him on talk shows and he has such a hilarious personality. He'd do great.
i want jake gyllenhaal to come to my birthday party and sing this song for no reason at all
Unfortunately Jake Gyllenhaal is kind of known for *not* showing up at people’s birthday parties...
@@tigerlily219 Ohhhh shit!! Oh no you di-in't! 💞
This is the alternate reality where Donnie Darko grows up
Yasssssss!
Meanwhile in a tangent universe...
1:25 this part when he drops his accent is by far the best part.
yAS i cried laughing!
I’m so glad I lived to see Jake Gyllenhaal not only a have a Hollywood moment but also a full psycho moment.
The best part is that it’s actually Jake’s cat meowing at him
He has a cat? I thought he only has dog(s)
eta: he said he doesn't have cats cuz he is actually allergic to them
Réka Mészáros right-
That’s not his cat, he is allergic, he was gonna hold the cat but he said I am allergic so that is not his cat. Also, the cat owner was on set
the bit where he's dragging the boom mic into the toilet bowl honestly makes me laugh so hard i start crying every time i watch it, it's just so good
Most underrated moment: "DAD, I think...." like how is the whole internet not talking about that moment
When
"No he is not okay. He is having a lot of trouble." Line to perfectly describe the mood of 2020.
LMAO, "Mother Mary! There's glass here! Who put glass here?!"
I'm dead. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Jake Gyllenhaal's not acting in here, he's in his natural habitat here. This is just him and his true chaotic personality, no acting, just him.
And we love that don't we?
Jake and John are comedy gold.
Please make more.
PostScript: I really needed this today. Had me laughing like a loon.
i never caught how he immediately kicks of the potted plant as soon as he enters 😭
Did she say dad
Farukh Khan I was hoping they would reference that again
I thought Angelina was gonna come out onto the stage.
Yeah, I think it's a reference to an earlier joke about kids calling adults mom/dad accidentally. But this moment was played pretty straight - so I wasn't sure if she somehow really was his daughter at first.
Worst way to find out youre adopted. On tv.
I'd call Jake Gyllenhall dad(dy) too
I died a little when he yeeted the clarinet out the window.
Please Mr Music, you have no idea how much those cost!
Good thing it landed on a truck full of pillows that was passing by just then 🤔
"I stayed up late trying on clothes I already own and I didn't prepare."
That when I lost it...🤣😂
“And I failed”
Story of my life.
I love this whole thing I keep watching itttt what gets me every time is at 6:59 the girl goes for the clarinet and he just goes “no I want this I’m keeping it this is mine” and walks the other way
“Oh yeah follow me!”
“But also give me space.”
If that ain’t me 😭😂😂
Jake Gyllenhaal’s reaction to the 10 min version of ‘All Too Well’ - the Music Man
2:45 I love it when the two kids break character when Jake starts hip thrusting
I womder what ryan reynalds is saying after watching jake doing this hahahahaha
Didn't notice in the end he says "I'm keeping this" about the clarinet. This sketch just keeps on giving.
"I'm making music - you're ignorant!"
I wheezed.
Jake is so chaotic. He’s too powerful
Jake’s laugh at 0:41 kills me every time
This is the duo i never knew i needed
I've watched this too many times now because it's the most funny thing i've seen in a long time. The respect I have for Jake Gyllenhaal has grows immensely because of this!
"It landed on a truck full of pillows that was passing only then."
Such a warm sweet idea.
He didn’t have to do this, and put so much into it, like he’s one of the best actors, this is just the dude loving life like a complete manic and that’s great. 👍🏻
After watching Jake G as "elphaba" on SNL last night and now this, I am thoroughly behind his Salvador Dali phase.
i have no idea what this is about but jake being chaotic is amazing. always.
🎶 MUSIC EVERY WHEAAAA 🎶
I like how Jake Gyllenhaal (my favorite actor btw) can go from a kid that meets a scary bunny, to a gay cowboy, to an obsessive detective, to an obsessive newspaper maker man, to a boxer, to a man that likes paintings, to an author, to a Prince (of Persia), to a man obsessed with his doppelgänger, to a man that lost his wife and took apart a vending machine, to a man that lost his legs in a war, to a supervillain that tricked Spider-Man, to a brother, to *this*...
A strange man that teaches people about music. Without music.
I also spent the better part of his childhood in a bubble.
I like to call this one ‘Spider-Ham meets Mysterio’
"It landed on a truck full of pillows that was passing by only then"
Still hilarious after watching it 30 times
Greatest actor of his generation
john's "when you were back over there especially" is criminally underrated
That mustache evolves Jake's frightening upper lip to it's final form
Jake is living his best life 😂
That "I want this. I'm keeping this." in the end is very underrated
jake shaking hands with the kids after a bombastic chaos filled performance is all i needed to see today
Hands down the best part of the special. I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe the first time I saw this.
for some reason, John saying “wHaT kInD oF sOuNd dId iT mAkE?” with a blank expression at 2:15 sent me
He almost looks like he knew it would make him upset to ask. It sounds like he doesn't believe there was supposed to be a sound.
I've watched this with my kids every day for the past week and we laugh so much every time. Never gets old!
"Follow me! But also give me space!" I died. 😆
The manic energy is off the charts, amazing
this is basically Jake Gyllenhaal's character in Okja if he was into music instead of animals
i can't help falling in love with Jake!!!
Nobody:
The Cat at 7:01 : *YEEAEYYEAYYAAAYYEEE*
Jake Gyllenhaal turns in the comic performance of a lifetime as my new favorite character on the planet, Mr. Music, and I'm just so glad we humans must have been good enough to deserve such delight in our lives.
Lmfao this is like extended footage of Jake’s character from Okja. He needs to play more acerbic kooky people-it’s so fun/funny. 💀
faith_forever yES
They picked him because of his performance in that movie!
Sheryl Smallwood Really!? Did John Mulaney mention this anywhere? Because I would be in heaven if Jakes minor character from Okja influenced his choice 😭.
faith_forever yeah it’s in a jimmy fallon interview
I’ve never been able to look at Jake G the same after Nocturnal Animals. “Didn’t he die?!!! Oh right. Just a nightmare of a movie!”
NA really is a magnificent film.
Inventor: Lets make something that’s a mix between crack cocaine, addiction to margaritas and Donnie Darko
*Mr Music exists*
Inventor: Success
Mr music has my exact energy and vibe. The cat at the end *chefs kiss*
“I stayed up late trying on clothes I already own”
A squishy sound ... Like what? Like a butt!
He really did this part very well 🤣
I wasn't really buying it at first but he won me over so damn quickly
I laughed so hard at the "like a squishy sound like a butt" part and stupid humor is hard to do...
Reminds me of the Hitler character from Jojo rabbit. Lovable, hilarious and scary at the same time somehow
Yes he is so similar to Taika Waititi! There are some other comments saying the same thing
Anyone else interested in seeing Jake Gyllenhaal work with Taika Waititi?
OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD YES YES YES. my favourite actor AND my favourite director? i genuinely think it would be the comedic masterpiece that would truly save the world
Skinny trumpet 😂😂
0:37 "Follow me!!! But also give me space hahA"
The CDC liked that
I love how that girl called Mr Music “dad”
my 3 year old brother absolutely love this, he cracks everytime. 😂
