  • In todays video we are talking about if getting a MBA is a better path than a project management certification. I received my MBA in 2011 and my PMP years later in 2018 and have been able to use both in my current role in corporate America. I walk you through in this video the pros and cons of both pathways and unique differences that I think are important. Let me know if you have any questions about either pathway and I really hope you enjoy todays video! Have a good night!

    The ROI on a PMP is phenomenal. Training is key to moving through the career path for project management and so is growing your EQ. There are great career paths with high salaries available for the right people and it is very open to women due to their already naturally high EQ.

    Can you show us more of an actual day in PM? Like, maybe make up a project, or use a past project, and take us through your thought process? I really miss these mentorship mondays, I know they arent the most popular, but I feel like if you tweak them, they can really take off! As you can see, tons of women including myself are inspired to go back, or now are aware of PMP certification being a thing, and now its a #wakandatakeover in the PM and MBA world!

In the other hand the MBA as you said is an opportunity to diversify and complement your career, may be to be a high level executive or even an entrepeneur in your own business. I definitely recommend the both if you have the opportunity. Nice videos Krystin! I just subscribed to your channel.

      @Rachel Bruce for my particular program, we had to code. I’ve never coded before so that was super challenging for me and extremely time consuming. I’d say if you already have your heart set on a Master’s in BA, there’s no need for a cert but learning R and/or Python would help you out a great deal.

    I know there is a like button but there should have been a love button for this content. I loved it. It was most definitely informative so thank you so very much. I graduated about 3years ago with a Bsc in Dental Hygiene Dental Therapy and I've always wanted change careers to do my masters to be more involved in corporate. . But I didn't want to get involved just for the sake of just having an Master. I researched and thought about it and I wanted to do my masters in either health promotion or health administration this year. . However they are both off cycle programmes which runs every other year. Bomber. So in the interim I wanted to the Pmp but I was told you have to have experience in planning projects etc. So I decided to do a Diploma in Project management to make myself my marketable for jobs in the future and even when the schools are selecting candidates for the master programmes. What do you think? Your advice or opinion. would be appreciated. ❤️❤️

    In the engineering world the PMP is not necessarily as sought after as people think. Usually the PMP needs to be accompanied by a PE (which is more valuable 10 fold) to be of any significance. When I’m hiring and see only PMP its not a discriminating factor. Additionally on any business card I do not recommend including any degree such at MBA or PHD unless pursuing a position in academia. There a fantastic project managers without certifications, and there are terrible project managers with PMP, MBA, PHD and a host of other ego boosting certifications.
    As a younger professional obtaining the advanced degree and any certification isn’t a bad idea. I would just suggest it is not the highlight of your resume, business card, or even your elevator speech/introduction. Your accomplishments or appetite for experience should be what you highlight. I’ve hired hundreds of people and its only my professional opinion, take what you can use and leave the rest.

    • @shamekadunbar
      @shamekadunbar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To each their own. I have learned of hiring managers who look for the letters such as PMP, MBA, etc. I do agree there are awesome PM’s who do not have the certification, but then again, everyone is different. I have obtained an MBA in Project Management and have yet to hear back from companies for a PM role. I am now going for my PMP to see if I can leverage more opportunities. I also see you have the state of Texas as your display pic. I’m originally from Houston and have worked both in Houston and Austin. Unfortunately, the market there did not work out for me, so I ended up leaving the state as the result. I do thank you for sharing your input, at least it gives me an idea of what some hiring managers have in mind.

    • @KristynAlexis
      @KristynAlexis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Thanks for chiming in Bob. I would agree but I also think that it depends on the company. Some companies require the certification and do not hire PMs without it and some do not value it. (If I am not mistaken I believe I touched on my perspective on this a little bit in the video.) At my company which is engineering focused we do not have a ton of PMs but if you do not have your certification you most likely will not be considered to compete for a PM role. They also often outsource many PM roles to consultants who are certified PMPs. I also see a lot of PMs coming from consulting firms that don't do project management for us but are all certified (BCG is one.) I guess my point is I think it depends on what each organization values and focuses on. I do also agree that a certification doesn't guarantee skillset but I do think that it does offer benefits to someone who knows how to sell it on their resume and for me increased my confidence level tremendously. Thanks again for chiming in and joining the discussion! It's good to have various perspectives for those who are debating how to proceed with their careers.

    Hello! I am an Architect and I am currently studying a Master in Real Estate Development, would you recommend to study a master in project management a couple or a few years later to keep my career moving? Would a Master in Project Management be a waste of time and money or would i benefit from it? Or do you recommend a MBA instead?

      Hey Shamese, I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been stressed out. Does the school where you got your Masters have a career services office? If so I would set an appointment with them to review your resume and provide placement services. You can also email me if you want a non-biased opinion at contactkristynalexis@gmail.com. Maybe I can add some ideas as well.

    I'm in my senior year of undergrad majoring in Marketing with a Concentration in Supply Chain. I want to pursue an MBA program after graduation, but I'm not sure if it should be in a specific area or a general MBA. Also, what are some tips for preparing for the GMAT exam?

    • @KristynAlexis

      I did Kaplan but I don’t think it’s necessary. I would for sure make sure you do a few practice tests to ensure you’re ready. That exam is no joke lol.

    I have a B.S in psychology would they count that as a 4 year degree towards my PMP certification or do they only recognize specific degrees related to Project management careers like B.A's in Project Management, Business, Management etc. I would rather I only have to do the 4500 hours directing projects and 35 hours of education to become certified. I want to get my MBA afterwards since it will look better on my college application.

      I found a few people at work who were interested in doing it with me. I would also look at the local chapters to see if they have any recommendations as I am sure there are a lot of opportunities to connect with others who are on the same pathway. Good luck with the exam!

    Do you think it’s better to do a part time or full time MBA?

    • @KristynAlexis
      @KristynAlexis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Full time from a ranked school ❤️

    • @lindseym1199
      @lindseym1199 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      KristynAlexis Thank you! That makes sense. A full time program would be an adjustment now that I have been working full time for four years. The main concern would be the lost income (vs. part time I could keep my main job), but I would likely recoup that with a salary increase after graduating.
      I appreciated your explanation of the MBA vs. PMP in this video as well. 😊

    I mean isn't it the goal to get the MBA with the PM concentration then get the PMP right after??? I feel like that would be the most solid thing to do. That is kinda the path I am on right now. I'm doing a double concentration then going to get the PMP cert after.
