For me, in Syrup Village, in the live action, they failed to emphasize Usopp's dream; To be a brave warrior of the sea. Iin the live action, he's more into protecting Kaya. There are actually no reason for joining the crew. Same with Nami. Her only dream was protecting Coco village from Arlong. Not once they mentioned about charting the world.

As a first time watcher the way I understood it was that Usopp is done telling lies and wants real adventures, he did hesitate when they were mentioning the dreams at the end so I can't wait to see more of him in season 2. As for nami she did tell luffy that one should grow out of their dream then showed her stealing a map book in the flash back as well as her making maps for arlong. I don't know about how this compares to the original but thy made sense to me

They obviously nailed the first s1, it has it's flaws however all this can be improved for a s2. Really hoping they revise the scripts for s2 to take in the critcisms people are giving them cause they really can make s2 perfect now that they have a formula and foundation. Also if they continue with the b plot formula prob with smoker and tashigi I really hope they find a way to balance when they need scenes and when we need to focus on the straw hats cuz koby really took away time from usopp development in syrup village just for koby to really do nothing in that arc in the end. However, im glad my wants that Last of Us and One Piece are the best live action adaptation in 2023 are true.

    This worked brilliantly.

I felt exactly the same way as you did about the super close-up shots. Maybe the directors wanted to focus on the actors faces? Fine, but use bust shots then. Not having the camera _right_ on the actors' faces.
I was bummed that we couldn't see the characters' body languages and hand movements in some scenes because of these close-up shots. Like in the scene where Luffy defeats Arlong then calls out to Nami that she's part of his crew, and the Straw-hats are all laughing, Sanji is putting his hands on Nami's shoulders and Nami is placing her hand on his, but we literally can't see this wholesome gesture because the camera is zoomed in right on Nami's face!
Not to mention some scenes looked slightly weird/funny (in scenes that weren't meant to be funny) because of the close-ups.
But this is just one of the small nitpicks I had with the OPLA and overall, I really enjoyed this series. I can feel the love and hard work that went into creating this. I hope hope hope we get more seasons and if we do, I hope they can get more episodes per season because I felt that the not-so-great changes in the story mostly came from having to cut down parts of the story to fit it in 8 episodes. If the pacing is fixed, I think it'll make this series even greater!

I appreciate how you touched on Usopp’s portrayal this season. Jacob Romero was very charismatic and intriguing in how he delivered Usopp’s scared factor, but also the endearingly charismatic storytelling aspect of Usopp. So yea, he was one of the best live-action portrayals superior to the manga version in my opinion; I also found him annoying first time meeting him in the east blue arc. But I also wish they gave more weight to his backstory! I hope we get to see greater development of his character so his part in the straw-hat crew is very meaningful, not just for laughs & gags.
But nah, it was still goofy the way Zoro went from dodging & beating Marines in a bar at Shells Town, to getting instantly knocked on the head with a beer bottle to pass out is nonsense 😂

For me it was 9/10. I have some issues, mostly with some of the changes, but overall it's a fun time and I can't wait till season two is out. I seem to be one of the few people who enjoyed the Garp storyline, but he is one of my favorite characters, so maybe it's a simple as that. When it comes to the Usopp, I get the impression that they deliberately wrote his character in such a way that we're gonna get major pay off during the second season. Like specifically during the barrels scene where they all declare their dreams, he is the only one who doesn't declare his overlapping with a shot from his backstory. This to me comes off as very deliberate, and as a form of set up.

Although I disagree with the B plot. I liked it since it gives more characterization for Garp and Coby. But I do agree with the Cocoyashi stuff was a miss. The whole point of Nojiko even having tattoos is to comfort Nami being branded. They should've made Syrup village 1 episode and 3 episodes for Arlong Park.

I hard disagree with you saying that interconnecting everything makes for better world building. It feels way more forced to have garp call up mihawk and have him just be within two hours of Luffy than mihawk naturally wandering into them by hunting don krieg for fun. In the original it’s his character that causes him to come across the crew rather than the writers spawning him in like the final boss of the level. They do this kind of thing a few times in the season where they change a characters plan or motivations in a way that I thought detracted from the emotional weight of the situation.

    • @Pangora2

I am going to support your position. It gives a feel that the World isn't moving unless its in relation to Luffy. Garp is supposed to be off being a Vice Admiral. After Buggy is knocked away he's supposed to have his own little adventures and then teams up with Alvida for the Logue Town ambush. Instead Buggy's head is kept in proximity of Luffy and Co.
As you point out, Mihawk is booting the Krieg Pirates out of the Grand Line. To WORLD BUILD the Grand Line we're supposed to see the straggling remnants of the infamous Kreig fleet barely limp one ship back, starved and frightened. This builds up the Grand Line. Also how does Mihawk get from the Grand Line to Baratie so fast? I guess the ocean isn't all that big.
Having all the characters literally on Call detracts. Also Warlords don't follow orders. They get pressed into a showdown with the Whitebeard Pirates where who shows up and who doesn't is a big plot element, Jimbei, Boa.

I like that they change things but keep to the overall feel of the story. Like you pointed out, what works in animation doesn't translate well to live action. Also, I don't see the point of doing a one for one narrative. Retelling the same story over and over with no changes is boring.

About Cocoyashi: I don't think the change ruins Namis character (maybe even makes it more tragic like you mentioned) but it does kinda ruin Genzo and Nojiko's characters because they already knew Nami and should have been speculative about her joining Arlong at such a young age.

I do wish the Garp b-side story could have been a lot more clearer on why he's going after Luffy like if they focused more on a personal goal instead of being like. I'm a vice marine and he's a pirate so I have to capture him. Instead why not focus on stopping Luffy from achieving his own bounty which officially symbolizes him as a true pirate crossing that threshold of no return. And it would also clash with the whole idea of Luffy's dream better. Also I get why Garp was laughing in some of the scenes in the live action. But I do feel like it clashed with how his character was portrayed at Rodgers execution making him seem a lot more serious and threatening there than how he was portrayed after. Luv the show by the way XD...

Every change they made for dramatic emotional moments was to it's detriment. And it would have taken like an extra 20 seconds maybe to do Usopp justice in his battle to become a brave warrior of the sea when defeating Chu. That was such a triumphant moment for him in the anime. They really dropped the ball in a lot of ways. That being said i loved the show and will most likely watch it again multiple times. I'm just surprised that they changed so many fundamental things about some of the Strawhats backstories and motivations. Nami got kidnapped right after her mother got shot in the head after paying for her freedom. They immediately took her freedom away and enslaved her. But in the live action she's a 10 year old girl boss who approaches Arlong with a deal? What?!

I think hair and dialogue are the main issue I have with live action adaptions
Don’t keep the hair coloured make it a natural colour that is close to the original. Make the dialogue grounded, vague and realistic. The live action has so much material they could’ve used that to foreshadow or imply more.
-and the clothes (they don’t have to be the exact same) make them look rugged and tone appropriate
    And the camera angles/shots😤

So does the original need to have problems that the adaptation fixes? I feel like a big part of the problem with adaptations is that people already feel like the original is flawless, so any changes made in the adaptation are unnecessary, but either it's to fit the tone of a different medium, to improve upon elements in the original that were under-explored or underdeveloped, or to change things for the sake of it that makes it worse than the original. I think writers have to be so careful with what they change, what they add and what they remove from the source material

I want to complain and explain my personal issues but don't want to put the 10 minutes of explaining into a comment.
In short, the actor's script/delivery are just off in the most important moments. They altered Roger's speech at the start. Zoro's losing speech doesn't hit. Luffy's agreeing to help Nami just seems awkward. And Shanks saving Luffy and giving him the hat both fell flat for me.
The live action is good (especially compared to others in the same medium), but there was just SO MUCH potential that was missed out on that wouldn't even require that much more time/effort/money.
Weird how they get some things like set and props filled to the brim with love and scattered easter eggs, and then missing on any emotional beat possible...

    • @Pangora2
      @Pangora2 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I agree, you're also one of the few that also doesn't like Roger's speech. Sanji reverting to a happy kid about the All Blue, a face he almost never makes in the series. Nami asking the villagers to "Die with me" in battle against Arlong, not to mention the Help Me. Nami's theme of relying and willing to sacrifice others is going to come up again with Vivi.
One cannot meddle with One Piece and not have consequences.

The worst part was changing the garp, mihawk, and coby. Garp is not himself way too serious. Mihawk does not listen to the marines until his position is threatened. The extra scenes with coby and garp made important moments rushed in east blue. I.e. syrup village and ussop arc, arlong park, and baratie having arlong instead of don krieg misses the whole point of sanjis introductory arc. If we cut all the koby, garp subplot the pacing would of been so much better.

I think the main problem they need to deal with going forward is episode count or runtime. They either need at least 10 episodes or 15 additional minutes of runtime. & I think Skypiea & Thriller Bark should be standalone projects like a movie rather than taking up 3 or 4 episodes of a season since they are 1-off adventures that Don’t really affect the plot other than foreshadowing & introducing characters. Oh yeah, & more interactions with the group on the ship. That was the best part of pre-timeskip & especially Baroque Works with Vivi. Their ship interactions on the daily.

Regarding the cinematorgraphy of One Piece Live Action...
I think an important objective of live action anime adaptions going forward will be to develop 'cinematic languge' for how live action anime adaptions should look as opposed to the approach that thas been taken thus far. Apparently _Creed 3_ of all movies has taken some very strong steps in this direction due to Michael B. Jordan's anime influences. And my gods if that man is lucky enough to ever get to adapt *_Dragonball Z_* and knock it out of the park in the same way that One Piece Live Action did - or even *_better_* than that!!! - then I think that will be a rather strong win as well.
It very much seems like One Piece Live Action has proven to be the _Batman '89 moment_ for live action anime adaptions so it will be interesting to see how long it will take for a _Dark Knight moment_ and then an _Avengers moment_ to happen for live action anime adaptions, the last of which would ideally usher in a *_Golden Age of Live Action Anime Adaptions_* not unlike what we had last decade with live action Superhero adaptions.
It's important to remember that we didn't go from those 1940s black and white Batman adaptions to 2012's _The Avengers_ overnight!!!

tl;dr not one piece fan but enjoyed the anime. didn't really like live action, it's fine i guess. lots of problem with luffy looking creepy, have some problems with nami and usopp story/character, sanji was better in live action
okay i enjoyed the one piece anime, even though i won't say i am a one piece fan (i watched it cause my older brother insisted, we even went to a point where if he watches it with me, i'll watch cause i cannot really be certain i'll watch it on my own lol). anyways, here's what i feel (i have not watched one piece in years, so maybe i'll have some stuffs i may have forgotten but i'll go with what i just felt, if i said anything incorrect don't mind correcting me (just not be too rude about it)
many kept praising actor luffy like he's the embodiment of luffy, but me and my brothers just cringes and laughs at him, like he kinda looks creepy whenever he smiles. our younger brother even does the "i'm luffy and i'm going to be the king of the pirates" and make a creepy smile face while trying to sound like a gremlin or something cause that's just how he looked for us. also that one scene where he sits silently then all of the sudden screams was unintentionally funny. no hate on the actor himself, i do like some scenes around him, but idk him being goofy and fun sometimes just look weird. and i really like luffy with his dumb smile and just going with the flow attitude, i think it just didn't click with me in the live action.
i do like the set pieces, that ate. cgi is expected in live action (and probably why they also cut hachi, his tentacles would have been nightmare for them lol). action is okay, wish some parts lasted more. music is nice. camera, as said in this video, is sometimes weird (and going back to luffy, them zooming in on him while he smiles doesn't help his case). the whole show does feel grounded, but also the neatness does sometimes just make the whole show also feel like a play.
i still don't like nami's story being changed, partly cause i really feel like it his more when they revealed everyone knew, they are just keeping faces for nami. i feel like in nami's shoes, you would have preferred if they just hate you and that they don't have to carry your burden. like yes, you are doing it for them, but you're still hurting them and taking stuffs from them.. that's what i think carried nami's story for me.
i can maybe forgive removing usopp's crew (though i really like that aspect) and maybe i can move on with the removal of his nose (rip) but he really didn't feel like he did anything in his own story. i like that part about nami and kaya though, but wish usopp had more impact, especially in his own story. also kuro is an infamous pirate but we only see two crew members. i know they tried to condense the story, but still they could have gone something more with his crew. also rip django
i think i like sanji a lot more compared to anime. him being not too heart eyes in a sight of a woman all the times, but just him hitting on girls if he have the right opportunity was a good move. though rip swirly eyebrows anyways, i also wish they did more with the other chefs, especially when they had a small fight scene inside the baratie. i can maybe forgive them for removing most of the fight scenes (and the part where the baratie got really, really wrecked), but man those chefs made the whole baratie feel like a family despite the constant fighting. no problem with sanji and zeff backstory, i feel like that was really good adaptation.

  • @Aviertje
    @Aviertje 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I feel the Syrup Village changes did Usopp dirty. They purely show him as the 'boy who cries wolf', whereas we know that his lies have always been his entire way of life, which also shows in terms of how he protects himself against the world by having 'thousands of followers' courtesy of tons of flags rigged up at the top of a hill.
Most actors were cast well. I think the weakest cast that can probably be excused because he's the most important person ever to be perpetually in the background, is Ben Beckman. That actor just looked like he didn't belong. I'm personally also unhappy with Bellemere's cast: she was a tough marine with partially shaved head and other tough vibes, and instead we got a full-on soccer mom, even in the war flashback when she was still enlisted. I understand that we have to cut out plots, but I have seen some people complain about the obvious logic of her mattering more to them alive than dead.. but in the manga, the people around her didn't think she could be a good mother to begin with, so she felt she had something to prove.
The Nojiko casting also felt off to me; they never quite felt like sisters to me. Yes, there is the obvious skin tone thing some people get hung up on, but it is more her entire 'build' that felt off to me. Perhaps the most identifying aspect of the two sisters is that they have very similar faces in the manga with especially gorgeous smiles. You can feel the similarity in their personalities through that and that they were raised as sisters with similar outlooks on life. But in OPLA, Nojiko is almost permanently frowning in a different 'flavor' than Nami would tend to frown, and same goes for other emotions which I don't quite feel were able to match. (For example, has anyone noticed how much post-TS Nami's attitude seems to match Nojiko's more casual and playful self-confidence? It's almost like she's a few years younger than her older sister...)
Garp B-plot was indeed the mixed bag you make it out to be. The board game scene was an utter waste of time, for example. It also felt awkward that he'd single those two out as much as he did long before he decided to offer them training. But the Zeff scene was amazing, with the caveat that I feel the entire 'Luffy resembles Roger' thing was pushed down our throats a little bit too much.
Nami's arcs changes are ones that annoyed me immensely too. The key issue is that Nami's real treasure is the villagers, and the despair that makes her seek Luffy's help follows from those villagers deciding to march to their deaths. Having her break down like that over money she could regather in a couple of years is not doing the tough nut that is Nami justice... and yet that event is only paid lip-service to afterwards.
    Great video!

In the Anime they all race towards the beach to stop the pirate invasion, and by pure accident Usopp winds up holding off the invasion by himself - but he doesn't run away. In LA? No invasion, Marines show up. Coby rug-pulled Usopp's first step towards being a hero.
Luffy resembling Roger is something that shouldn't start until Logue Town in the bar and scafold. Why is he stealing thunder from Sanji's time?

Jango was sorely missed, they made all this big deal about Morgan defeating the Black Cat Pirates (it gets repeated multiple times) and yet no one explained why the story is inconsistent.
I REALLY wanted to see Kuro crush Morgan's jaw 😢
I mean...those are the only (very) thin threads that connect some of the east blue villains and you deliberately ignore them?
(Tbf it didn't have to be Jango, they could have made Buchi or Sham the hypnotist,i just wanted Usopp to get a win against someone in his arc)
I also didnt like how they handled Cocoyashi's villagers, its such a good scene when Nami is STILL trying to keep a tough front and telling them she just has to get the money again, the rest of that scene as well.
It also felt...kinda out of nowere that Arlong would suddenly decide to burn the village, i guess its tied to that earlier speech about discarding humans once they're not useful anymore? Still kinda inconsistent imo.
Also out of all flashback nami is the one that gets trimmed? 😡
Where is my Bellemere torture scene? 😡😡
Those are my two biggest gripes about the series, the rest gets a 9/10 ❤

Without Jango, Morgan doesn't have a promotion for catching Kuro, and Kuro's plan to hypnotize Kaya into writing the will doesn't work. So. I just started the anime, i put it off for a long time because the art style bugged me. I watched 45 episodes and am in love with this world and am looking forward to the 1000s of episodes ahead.
.. i am absolutely not a fan of the live action adaptation and have NO clue what people are enjoying about it. The characters aren't the characters. Some of them to a wildly underwhelming degree. Luffy doesn't have the right energy, Zoro is too stoic, Nami is dull, Usopp is difficult in the anime and almost unbearable in live action. So far Alvida, Axe Hand, Buggy, Kuro, and even Arlong to an extent have been boring husks. I don't see how this broke the curse and renewed peoples trust in anime adaptations at all..

Assuming you're just 40-50 episodes in, I can't say much more than trust the process. The adaptation moved some of the characteristics a tad earlier (like Zoro's stoicism, for example).
It's definitely not perfect, mostly due to how ridiculously rushed it was, but I think they captured the essence of the characters almost perfectly (at least from the perspective of knowing where the story goes from here).

It's an interesting take and I am interested to see what they do with the next season. Oh and.. good Lord I loved Mihawk! Perfection. I've read some of the manga and never watched the anime. But it just seemed like the LA interpretation of Nami and Zoro's characters were very Marvel-esque. Caricatures of "tough, action hero" characters. And not true enough to what I have seen from their characters so far in the manga.

Nami in the source material is often called a cat burglar. She is often playful and smiling. She even gets the playfulness "maybe I can pay with my body?" from Bellemere. She is manipulative because she seems nice and approachable but then saddles a poor idiot with owing her 3x the money he borrowed and does it all with a smile. In the LA Nami she's gruff...constantly feels annoyed to be around people.
Zoro as well could be quite comical in the source. When he goes all stoic, you know its serious time. When he's hunting minorities on Whiskey Peak he's having a grand fun time. There's not enough layers to him in LA
