I was maybe 8 years old, so it was around 1988 when I saw the first and only time a Clodbuster in a shop. Couldn't believe how big it was. Even a Midnight Pumpkin was around. I swear I'll get one someday 😂
Fantastic build and beautiful work! I'm 60, and I got into RC in my 40's because I was finally able to get some of the RC's I could never afford as a poor kid. Of course I knew of Tamiya but they never were really on my radar back in the 80's and since I never had one or wanted one back then I don't have the nostalgia for them that most of my friends here do. I love the way the Clod looks and I love building kits but everything I've done up to this point has been with awesome, modern high performance kits, and from everything I've seen about the tamiya models they seem rather toy grade as far as the electronics, suspension, transmission etc. And also very limited in the performance. Now I do know that they are immensely upgradeable and a person could spend an absolute fortune modding one to run somewhat like a modern basher but I'm still having a hard time wrapping my mind about the appeal of them other than the looks and I totally get it if someone had them as a kid or for their first RC, so I get the nostalgia part of it. But stock they basically seem very outdated, with toy like stock parts. I do have a Konghead I'll be building this winter and maybe after that I'll get the attraction more. I really love any RC really and learn to appreciate them for what they are after driving them. I was the same way about crawling several years ago. I just didn't get it because I was a basher and thrasher lol eventually I tried it and after doing it and seeing that it requires a different skill set and was rather relaxing, I loved it. Right now every time I watch a tamiya video I kind of shake my head and go why? What's the attraction, they run terrible 😂. Now, that isn't entirely true, I've seen some that actually looked really fun. But in general they definitely don't seem to have any kind of performance or good suspension. But since I haven't yet driven one, I'll reserve any true judgment until I get my Konghead built and drive it. I hope it changes my mind about them. I just don't have room on my shelves for too many underperforming but great looking shelf queens 😂 yours looks amazing, great work and great overview of the build! 😁👍🤜🤛⚡⚡🔥🔥
So I can definitely see your logic on Tamiya especially if your experience is a bit on the lesser end came in as you stated 40 That would put you around the nitro craze a bit and the rise of sedan racing and of course bash style rc traxxas. I was for sure lover of those the thing is I’m 50 but got the rc bug at 8. My uncle introduced me to them around 1981 with a Tamiya rough rider. And kyosho peanut rc. I was amazed. All metal rc cars and big and heavy. I would later get a Tamiya grasshopper around 86-but my first was hobby grade rc is 84 Marui Big Bear. Meanwhile I’d get Nikko tyco radio shack rc along the way as my parents couldn’t afford those. The magazines and commercial appeal really aided the attraction. Like it or not Tamiya made pretty rc. The realistic approach with Tamiya bruiser a s speed truck or the 1/14 semi trucks. Also the track killing Tamiya Dyna storm. Tamiya is legendary they just are. My favorite rc brand no that is Marui because of it being the first one and they died off. Sadly. But I love any rc brand that is trying to keep rc in the stay. All of them hence my library of 175 videos and more of various companies. I can respect that even if I don’t get it. Which I generally do airplanes took time but I now dig it-I can learn to accept it. @@LukesVintageRC absolutely! @@LukesVintageRC as far as drones go, I'd suggest getting a sub 250 model so you don't have to register it. A small one is much better to transport and fly too and draw much less attention. Plus I had to register it and all of that stuff. All this regulation stuff is killing the fun of drones. And people are paranoid and suspicious of them🙁 so, the smaller the better. A small dji or autel like the dji air 2, or dji mini 2 or Mavic mini, Autel nano will be perfect for videos. They are the perfect size and have incredible video. I use my go pro and phone camera s for video and wanted to introduce Ariel views but my drones are too big like I said. I may end up selling my big Autel and switching to a new small one. It's a shame too because my autel flies beautifully, has 3 batteries, a case, extra props etc. And the video is amazing. Funny you say Ed's rc. awesome video! I had a clodbuster in 89 had it all tricked out, even had a snowplow hooked up to it, sold it to a friend in 2000, regretted it, I have all kinds of fast trucks, but it was something about the clodbuster. I just purchased the black edition I will not be getting rid of this one I am glad I caught your channel, you have given me some great ideas!
Good timing on this purchase and build. You ought to get many new viewers and subscribers from this one since you are the 1st to post a video on this new Clodbuster. You and I both appreciate the modeling aspect of RC, I like the little painting accents you've done that set it apart from other builders rigs. Nice work Luke! Thanks Joe, Hurricane’s are the worst. Luckily all good. Prayers to all that suffered. Luke, this one brings back memories too! I had the original Clodbuster and modified it while I was in college. At some point when I moved I ended up giving it away to a kid who just drooled over it. Wishing I hadn’t. Now I’m seeing these videos and makes me want to buy a new one! I feel that itch in my wallet!😉😊😎 most of all that kid in me yearns for it!(besides, I’m not married!)😆
This is such a cool looking truck. I'm not sure how much I like the baby blue hardware. I just think a black roll bar and bumper would look better. Thanks for showing us the build that's quite helpful.
So bro, honestly I like to do my own thing instead of completely box art as I’ve been for minute or two like everyone does. But the cool thing about this kit and I highly recommend it, you get spares so you can change anything out quick if you need.so color blue is are nowhere near baby blue. You need to see it live-but Robert there’s metal in the blue so just not possible-The bumper on mine is black. So..Your referring to chassis guard that comes with kit in the blue color. Honestly this clod kit is the best one. I own an 87 original red so I’m no way being just bias because of new is better but in this case absolutely. Plus it’s a limited ed. but Tamiya has been known to ramp production and then halt. Tricky company. ie candy green GH. On my channel I never really play by the so called rules to follow for good video format -You have to film the videos in multi stage video format, or you have to use this or you have to do that. Nope never I’ve always let my adhd rule out on my single video of all resto/paint/run formula per rc car truck boat etc. Same idea goes into my random rc restos too. So remember if it makes you happy that’s key right, Preferences are a sticky mess that just rocks or rolls. Flavor or Flavour..😆 thanks 😊
Hi there Luke, a great looking Super Clod for sure. It’s turned out to be stunning, that grey & blue colour combination looks awesome. Lots of work indeed. Take care and best wishes 😊😁😉
I was kind of disaapointed in the body molding but overall it is an amazing truck. I goofed and stuck two Sport tuned motors in mine and one is running really fast and the other slow due to the timing in them... I totally wasn't thinking about it what I grabbed them. The replacements will be here tomorrow I think so I can actually get mine wrapped up and running! Yours looks really great and I like you did the roll bar in the blue. That looked really cool. The gray paint matched very well also, better than the Tamiya paint did!
Hey Adam, I’m excited for you with this truck. So yeah i originally bought the torque tune myself and they have a timing set. But before I could rebuild one the other came later so I ordered my traxxas 20t motors. As they are zero timed. Definitely wakes these big guys up as normal is 12mph mine is 14mph so I’m good for now. I had fun doing this one and yeah some people aren’t doing anything to the bodies paint wise regardless the issues. I believe RCdriver didn’t do any paint on the body when they did there’s recently but ran it 3S pack on it. Moves nicely looks a tad faster than mine in 2s mode. I’m tempted to 3S mine speed should be around 17mph! Thanks for watching.
Well that turned out great Luke!!!! Looks fantastic with the painted roll-bar, isn't another one like it!!!! Awesome job!!!! Plus, did I hear you been talking to The RC Elf? That's AWESOME man!!!!!
Great job, the Clod looks awesome. Unfortunately I have now a lemmon for you. The TT motors are timed, that won't work on this car. Or real bad, because they have to run on this rig in different directions. Not sure if you builded in the original TTs, the foto was to short to see for my eyes. Sorry. RC4WD has some low turn motors without timing.
So I originally ordered the Tamiya Torque motors but one is fine, the other would need endbell adjustment to zero which I will do sometime in future, I live for challenges don’t you know lol! So as stated in beginning traxxas 20t stinger is the overall result. Please watch again. I do post information in description telling the basics in my videos. Helps those who wanna build there’s too. I’m honestly pleased with traxxas 20t stinger motors. Great prices too. Future 87 vintage clod resto I contacted Team Brood who has motor kits for these trucks I’ll do sometime next year. Yes Sir aftermarket support is strong for Clods. Thanks for watching and commenting, keep rocking your rc channel.
I think this is the best looking clod buster from Tamiya! I need to get started on mine, but really didn’t want to paint it. Guess that I need to though….
It is quite fantastic looking but no escaping the paint process. Especially if you want to display and not cheap rc so I say do it up. You’ll be glad. Limited series too. Probably a collectible in future. Thanks a ton 😊
@@LukesVintageRC yeah she’s going to be on display with my Tamiya Juggernaut that is a Tamiya light blue . Should look good together with the grey clod. Where did you purchase the light kit? I want one to install … thanks
Nice work on the clod! Honestly for me, I like the color of the body. To me, the color grey is already nice color and doesn’t need to be painted. I plan clear coat mine.🤣 Didn’t really care for the blue on your roll bars. It looks more toyish, but to each their own! I’m now thinking If I could just find the clod buster black f parts instead of using the cyan blue parts, the clod would look more aggressive, stealthy, and just killer looking. I’m also gonna order a MCI repro 80’s decals and changing the yellow and orange strip, to another color. Gonna think on that one.🤣. I may hold the cyan blue f parts and see if I can hunt some black f parts of which I know is gonna be hard to find. Any who, great job on the clod. Hope to see some bashing videos on the toy!😀
no worries bro, the only problem with the grey molded body is the molding marks and impressions are visible. Tamiya does require their own grey paint for the body actually I just chose my own. With the body imperfections issues Many people have this problem but if a shelf queen is not your thing don’t worry about that. Nice to see you on the Tamiya kick.😀
Could someone help me with my Clodbuster? It ran great for years, then it developed this problem where at full speed the rear axel would ROW (picture someone rowing a kayak.) The chassis rocks back and forth, and it rips all the suspension out. I can't find anything wrong with it! The wheels are on straight, I don't see any alignment problems, everything is screwed in tight, I don't get it! I miss driving it so much, it's such fun, can anyone help?
Just got done putting the same one together. Doing research on the painting part and found your vid. Hows is your paint holding up?? Ive read to stick with the tamiya brand stuff because the hardware stuff pretty much sucks...appreciate any info

Absolutely. So stock is 11 to 12mph right. This does around 14-15 mph. If there’s drag or drain it would not be faster than stock. @@LukesVintageRC Thanks luke. I bought some 20T high-polish motors from RC4WD for my Bullhead but one of the motors burns up when I run it and i was "assured" they are 0* timing...hence why I was asking...
@@goldenmanuever1176 lol it’s all good. The traxxas 20t stinger motors were a universal design for traxxas for multiple uses in many different specifications including boats too where twin engines was necessary in different positions or configurations. Also these were used in rc tanks too where as positions are reversed too. Just a good all around motor that has been around for years and used in everything. I’m definitely not the first to use it in a clod and won’t be the last lol. I have a stinger in my kyosho raider and my Nikko Scorpion as of now and both run like a beast. Both videos on my channel too and as you know the motor position is opposite on these vehicles. So I don’t have experience with rc4wd brand’s motor but I do have other things from that company. I’d contact the company and see if they can accept a return on the motor. If you need help with anything else let me know I don’t mind helping you out. Take care
@@LukesVintageRC thanks Luke. I remember having the traxxas stingers in my Villian IV. It was water cooled and moved pretty good on 7cells! I wouldn’t mind trying these motors in something else !

Howdy, if you watch my videos you know I only use 2S because of the rarity of my rc cars and trucks. I’d be a dummy if I ran 3S. I would kill all the work I put in to restoring these rc yet alone the cost of parts if any could be found. @@LukesVintageRC I just subscribed, so I’ll be watching more of your videos. I didn’t realize you only did 2s but definitely makes sense as some of these older ones don’t take the beating. I want to buy this kit, I'm trying to find some information about the ESC and connections, I'm going to be using an IC5 battery, or IC3 if I have to buy a new battery, is the Tamiya connector to the battery male or female? I don't want to buy a new charger. Thanks
I believe you could just buy an adapter off eBay. So the battery is a male connector. the esc itself has the female Tamiya connector. I usually just make my own from scratch as I have tons of different connectors IC5, XT-30 to 90, JST, DEANS, EC2-5, TRX to TAMIYA. You just need to be careful when mixing as it’s easy to get the pos to neg configuration wrong when making your own custom version.
my opinion is the material used or the amount of material to make these bodies are less. It could just be a different recipe from Tamiya but it’s definitely different than my 87. Thanks for watching

Great video. Love the last jump over the Grasshopper. The car look awesome. Best clod I've ever seen!
Yeah Tamiya killed it with the box art this time. Thanks 😊
Hi there Luke, a great looking Super Clod for sure. It’s turned out to be stunning, that grey & blue colour combination looks awesome. Lots of work indeed. Take care and best wishes 😊😁😉
Hi friend, I truly believe this is the best reissued out as of yet for the money. Big, beautiful and fun! thank you.
I just got one of these and can't wait to drive it.
Waiting on bearings and steel pinions.
Yours turned out great
Have fun man! 👍
I think this is now my favorite color scheme! Looks great!!
Thanks man.😎
I was kind of disaapointed in the body molding but overall it is an amazing truck.
@@LukesVintageRC yeah I saw it on 3s when he was driving and I may but it'll be with the old banged up body on it and not the nice new one!! 😂
awesome build and great looking rc
Thank you 😊
Great attention to detail looks well...only one word will do AWESOME!!!!
Your awesome, thanks 😎
@@LukesVintageRC 👍
Well that turned out great Luke!!!! Looks fantastic with the painted roll-bar, isn't another one like it!!!! Awesome job!!!! Plus, did I hear you been talking to The RC Elf? That's AWESOME man!!!!!
Thanks man, so yeah RCELF sent me some goodie’s. Amazing human. Beyond excited! ☺️
@@LukesVintageRC He said he talked to you in an email I got from him, He is most definitely a one of kind human being.
I'm building one of these myself! Great video!
Ooh Yeah buddy get it done. 👍 thanks 😊
Sweet man.
Hare Krishna
Thanks 😊
Favorite of the “box art colors”
Agree. Thanks 🙏
whish tamiya had done the black edition in black and gold.
You never fail to make an amazing product. 👍🏼 So happy for you that the RCElf reached out. Any RC in you hands is in good hands 👊🏼
Thanks bud, yes RCELF is amazing. 😊
@@LukesVintageRC Sorry, sha,e on ,e I hadn't read the description.
@@RCBirds no worries my rc brother 😎
Great channel subscribed just come over from Andy RC recommendation 👍🤩🚴🏅
Thank you ☺️
Great job. I like the blue roll bar. Gotta start mine in a couple weeks.
Awesome bud. Thanks 😊
luke i got two coming for my bullhead. you running stock tamiya pinions? stingers are direct fit??
Yes sir. 👍
Love the colors on this edition.
Absolutely
Looks great.. Awesome run too.. My cousin is passing down his original Clod down to me soon. I also would like to get this kit too. Thanks
Cousins are awesome. Thanks 😊
@@brianwood9849 eBay search- rc car lights.
Subbed from this build. It looks so good.
Addams playground sent me here.
Thank you. 👍
Looks fantastic mate . 👍
Thanks a bunch.✌️
Could someone help me with my Clodbuster? It ran great for years, then it developed this problem where at full speed the rear axel would ROW (picture someone rowing a kayak.) The chassis rocks back and forth, and it rips all the suspension out. I can't find anything wrong with it! The wheels are on straight, I don't see any alignment problems, everything is screwed in tight, I don't get it! I miss driving it so much, it's such fun, can anyone help?
@@gram440a perhaps check out a ClodBuster forum on Facebook for a more comprehensive overview. Thanks 😊
Awesome build 😎
Thank you 😊
Hey Luke we’re do you get your head light? Any lights on eBay? Planning on getting a pair of lights for my Clodbuster.
Howdy, yup tons of lights on eBay just search rc car lights. Thanks enjoy
Just got done putting the same one together. Doing research on the painting part and found your vid. Hows is your paint holding up?? Ive read to stick with the tamiya brand stuff because the hardware stuff pretty much sucks...appreciate any info
Prep,Prep, Prep is the main method and that applies to anything your starting with in the hobby of paint. Super large catalog of rc car restorations on my channel which includes all aspects of the beginning and ending via running analysis of a total restoration. Enjoy 😉
What light kit did you use?
So I grabbed the cheapest “rc car lights” off eBay. Many choices, but beware the cheap ones take time to come.
Are the Traxxas motors faster than stock?
I was considering getting it and a couple Holmes hobbies brushed motors.
So yeah stock clod 12mph. 14-15mph traxxas ones. Holmes is good choice too probably similar to traxxas.
Quick question about the paint. Do you have to prime the plastic parts before painting? If so what did you use?
no just paint and go. Thanks
Man we love ours. Time for another one. lol
Awesome stuff. Thanks 😊
@@LukesVintageRC Yeah man you did a very nice job with the detail paint work.
I do my best bud thanks ☺️
Hey Luke are you sure the Traxxas 20T Stingers are 0* timing and can be reversed?
Absolutely. So stock is 11 to 12mph right. This does around 14-15 mph. If there’s drag or drain it would not be faster than stock. Be sure to check out my other videos where I fix, restore run and speed check rc cars once or twice per month. A new vintage restore of multiple Rc type cars, truck, boats and and custom movie themed rc each and every month all in one video. Nobody else does this on TH-cam. like comment and subscribe. Hit notifications bell to never miss a video as there’s nearly 200 to check out.😉
@@LukesVintageRC Thanks luke.
Yup wouldn’t you know that’s a boat that’s coming on the channel so stay tuned. If you like check out my Instagram Luke’s Vintage RC @ VintageLuke. I post my collection and upcoming videos. Take care
Bro, how can i use that to fill
In the blower intake area. I just want a smooth flat hood
Buy a sheet of abs plastic from a hobby store cut into shape, glue and add filler.
I have a set of clod tires but there old and cracked.. having trouble finding a match... any ideas. They are on a blackfoot so i have rims.
Sounds like IMEX tires?
SICK!
Thanks
Question was that speed run on a 2s or 3s I didn’t remember you mentioning it.
Howdy, if you watch my videos you know I only use 2S because of the rarity of my rc cars and trucks. I’d be a dummy if I ran 3S. I would kill all the work I put in to restoring these rc yet alone the cost of parts if any could be found. This channel is more for knowledge but there’s always a small run I do at the end to get an idea of the character. If your not a subscriber I urge you to consider. Do like and share. Thanks
@@LukesVintageRC I just subscribed, so I’ll be watching more of your videos. I didn’t realize you only did 2s but definitely makes sense as some of these older ones don’t take the beating. My clods are updated so I normally run up to 3s on them, though to your point I have broken some old weak gears before.
Did you paint the truck the same as box art
Should I say or have ya watch 😉
Thanks, Ill give it a whirl. @@LukesVintageRC
Did anyone know that the original Clod Buster had an appearance in the LANGNESE advertisement in the 80´s ?
It's weird that it has those sunken spots on the hood area, the other clod bodies don't, or at least they didn't.
my opinion is the material used or the amount of material to make these bodies are less. It could just be a different recipe from Tamiya but it’s definitely different than my 87. Thanks for watching
Con un motor Traxxas 12T titan volaria 🤤
But large but modifiable I guess. Thanks

I do not support RC Race mixing 😂 those Traxxas part should stay on there side of the track. My grandpappy taught me that.
I guess super slow is fine right gramps.😆
