My wife is from Ifugao and I have spent time up there. I have never been offered dog meat, but I know the men will sometimes eat it as a pulutan/snack while they are drinking together. Maybe nowadays done a bit more discreetly. Up there, it is just part of the culture. Generally in Asia, there is a different attitude towards animals. Nothing is really off the table. As a westerner, there is a psychological barrier to the thought of eating many of the things Asians and Filipinos love to eat! Would love to see you visit Batad and Mayoyao.

Back in the 70's, Baguio is surrounded with huge mining towns usually around benguet province. Some may have reduced operations and others closed. Mining at that time was the biggest employer in the Cordillera region and surrounding provinces. So many sons and daughters got educated, thanks to the mines.

In the mt. Provinces. We have a ritual called Daw-es where dogs are sacrificed to ward off evil or bad luck away from somebody. Some elders require dogs to be used as they are better in guarding people.

one of the oldest and original eatery here in baguio. you might just want to order an extra serving of rice when viands are served. yet i still have doubts if the "bakasyonistas" who say they often return to baguio, would try their palates on these real cordilleran menus....

We used to live in Baguio which I miss very much. Baguio was kind to us, with quiet but beautiful Igorots, I found kind of calming and welcoming people whose pride you can see from their elders , walking so regal with their having suit and ties shirts while just using their “ bahag” kind of covering at their lower extremities no matter how cold the weather is. Beautiful Warriors I called it Snd I was just a little girl then. The people taught me how to dance with the sound beat of the gong or just any thing that can make a beat and sound . They taught me how to weave by tying ( tie) each edges of colorful threads together , until they form huge balls of threads used for weaving fabrics. The end products are magically beautiful garments of colors! Most of all, I miss the simplicity of how their people live. As Da Vinci says “ Through the eyes, all the things of various nature are represented to the soul.”
And to the Igorots of Baguio, they were the first and example of the world of different cultures and yet the same , somewhere around the world of other cultures. Different and yet the same when I say… “ simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”( Leonardo Da Vinci)

Pre-travel days, I did not know that other Pinoys consume dog meat but as I started exploring my country I have learned the sad fact that yes, in some areas in the PH they do consume dog meat. Take care you both and have a nice evening. Hi Ms Grae.

Back at home, in the Mid 70's the US Military hired Filipinos for construction project on base & I heard that some of their dishes was eating stray dogs 😳 that it was weird how they had that as a dish to eat. And my 1st time I saw Gay partners coming out on weekends for relaxations, it was very shocking to know of that. Then I had travel to PH for shopping and medical purposes bc it was cheaper compared on my island that was just (3hrs) away for dental work and Executives Checkup, enjoyed staying at Serenda-2 that my Gf and co-worker gave me her condo in at Fort Bonifacio that was so convenient bc Market-Market Mall was just across the street and did my fruits & veggies fresh bc Farmers Market 🍎🍉🍌🥑🥬🍅🌶🥕was next to the Mall, Green Hills during my 2wks stay. Love the customer service their & shopping Malls & outdoor market, Divisoria and Tutu ban. Now I don't go their anymore since I relocated to the US😇🎁

I wish Foie Gras wasn't considered any more cruel than meat consumption in general. Geese LOVE to be fed in the way they are to fatten the liver. They also can not be stressed, or it puts the flavor off. It has been used as a target by PETA simply because the methods used have machine assistance to feed them, and it looks controversial in black and white grainy fake hidden videos.
Dogs have more value as companion and service animals. So, usage as a food source is usually relegated to only certain breeds and not near as common, and then in times of great famine. It is also a cultural target by racists who claim people from Asia will steal your dog or strays and just eat them. First, that is a major health risk because dogs can carry many pathogens. Second, racists treat everyone who isn't themselves as a monolith to be othered and less than. So, of course, they would use a trigger for an animal that has been of use for survival longer than even the horse to rile people up in their hatred.

How about neuter or spayed the animals, so that they don't over population, I see that people didn't come up with that thought when they let their pets roam the streets/ no longer want it and throw them in the streets to die , don't blame the foreigners for the ignorance of incosiderate people.
You think that eating dog meat is looked down upon just because is moraly wrong no, most look down on eating dog meat because eating dog meat can be dangerous to human health. Dogs are dirty; they'll eat anything, as omnivore their stomach handle it, ours not so much( this is why we cook food most of the time). The rikt of getting things like cholera, dangerous viruses, and pathogens are very high. One it's not regulated( the conditions in which the meat is obtain is unkknown, the cleanliness in how the meat was processed is unknown, and the shipping and safety in which the meat was preserve is unknown. ), two the contamination of rabies, ecoli, roundworms, tapeworm, and other viruses or pathogens are high( no one knows where that meat came from/ how it was obtain). There's a reason why they are only pets and not food, some mammals especially if they're carnivors are not meant to be eaten even if you can because the probability of contamination with a dangerous virus, bacteria, or pathogens increases x 2; unlkie them our stomach can't kill the bacteria or pathogens making the consumption of their meat dangerous and even deadly (it's like playing russian roulette with your life).
In Asia alone, thousands of people die because of rabies from eating dog meat that has been contaminated; you see a dead dog you think it died from olf age, you pick it up and sell it( its that easy to get sick, bc it's not regulated). Rabies has been found in dogs traded for food in China, Vietnam, and Indonesia (these are the countries that have register it, imagine the ones that havent, or in the rural areas; some people don't register death) herd animals are regulated and even then we have to be ver careful of preparation, because this meat or the places that sell it isnt regulated, the preparation of it is unknown; no cleanliness when preparing the food, not cooking the meat correctly; dogs are omnivores so their meat has to be well done unlike hervivors meat which is possible to eat it rare, dog meat carry blood pathogens more often than herdding animals. Even if the meat is well done the utinsils can still be possible contaminated with a virus ( no soap and water, vinager, or hot water can kill it on the surface).
Roundworms and tapeworms can live in high temperatures and are very hard to kill and detect, so your dog meat can be well done and full of worms eggs which then you'll consume and get something like hydatid disease (tapeworm in the liver ), dog tapeworm unlike cows tapeworm don't just stay in the intestine and unlike pork tapeworms which can go straight to the brain, dog tapeworms love to go straight to two places your heart or your liver which is very dangerous. Ascariasis(roundworm in humans) is no joke either they can travel all over your body and turn you into their host. In conclusion the parasite cannot be cooked away, the viruses canno't be cleaned away, cross contamination is high af , and thats why is mostly looked down upon, not just a morality thing.
