I’m currently waiting/saving for my first Rolex.

Don't you find, despite all your intentions to the contrary, you can never sell a single one, with some cockamamie excuse. I'm gonna fix it, blah, blah, blah.

So Mark should now let us meek automatically build up credit then he sends emails to “The club” recommending “this months best buy” - say for $300 per mtg, we we can hold off for as little or as much depending what we want……. Over to you Mark, time to start the watch club!

I looked at some used Rolex watches once at a jewelry store. I was wearing my Engineer M Pioneer Ball watch at the time. I thought they were fake when I picked them up. They felt like cheap toys with the hollow end-links. It was illuminating and disappointing at the same time. It made me feel a lot better about getting the Ball for instead of one of them. I didn’t know until now that they used to make them like that. Crazy. Thanks for all of the information. I love the videos!❤

My favorite watch in my collection is a Seiko spring drive which is from their Presage line. It's a limited edition collaboration piece done with Studio Ghibli and from the animated film Porco Rosso. It's the SNR047 limited to 500 pcs. Incredible enamel dial adorned with Porco Rosso elements. Truly a cool piece. I also have it's companion piece which is a chronograph limited to 600 pcs. I feel fortunate to have both of these unique time pieces.

When I got promoted last year I picked up an SNR049 from Japan as they were gone here in the US. It's a chonker of a watch height wise, but it definitely wears really well. I took mine off the bracelet and opted for a blue sail cloth for now. The dial is one of the best seiko dials I have in my collection and certainly the best AR coating. There have been times wearing it that I felt the crystal fell out of the watch. It's just amazing. Great collection, Mark.

I agree with the "if a'int broke, don't fix it" approach to servicing. Only times I'd go with a regular 3-5 year regular interval is with a very special vintage watch, where parts are very hard to find later on. A "preventive" service so to speak.

For some reason so many of watch youtubers seem to enjoy bashing Rolex at every opportunity (perhaps it generates clicks as frustrated youngsters fume over not being able to actually buy one and pretend other brands are better) so it is great to see so many real heavy Rolex hitters. So my mom worked for a big dollar non-profit when we lived in Dallas and a retired doctor that volunteered there had a Datejust or maybe a Day Date that was extremely similar to your father's watch. Definitely two tone and had the lines on the dial. That is literally the watch that got me interested in watches. I've never owned a Rolex but do own two Omegas and previously owned another. If i were to get one, 80% chance it would be an Explorer but probably a Datejust would be the better option. Great video. It felt quite personal.

Beautiful. My first Rolex after I graduated in 2003 was the Sub 16610. To me, the dimensions of it are perfect. Couldn't buy a modern Rolex Sub because to me, the Maxi Dial and the Lugs are too big to feel like a sub. Plus, no way a plane jane sub is worth 10k+ lol. People are getting hosed if they are paying over 10k for a modern day sub.
Now my 2nd Rolex I bought was the 18k White Gold Daytona with Arabic Numbers black dial. I bought that in 2006/7 after my first deployment. It was such a killer watch. I felt that the weight was well balanced and it just fit like a glove on my wrist. I sold it in 2020 for 30k with box and papers. No regrets but its crazy how much that model gained value in about 2 decades.

I love the Seiko Spring Drive watch. The movement is amazing and keeps very accurate time. I love the sweep of the second hand go round and round. I wish I could afford one. This inflation has killed my buying power. I used to have a few Rolex watches, but this was before 911 happened, and in the DC area many banks would not lend money, so I lost job after job not getting fired but companies going under all over the place and I had to sell everyone but one off. I had a 1987 Datejust, an older Yachtmaster, but I kept the no date sub as it goes with everything and fits well on my small wrist. Back then I could just go to a dealer and buy them with a discount, and I think it was close to 20 percent off retail. Now they seem nearly impossible to get at MSRP, with no more discounts. They try to make you buy a bunch of junk first, and I suggest you leave the store and go elsewhere.

I guess everyone just assumes that seeing as you are a 'watch guy' and run a 'watch channel' you MUST have really high end watches in your personal collection, totally failing to see that it's NOT just a hobby for people who have vast amounts of money. OK, we all admit that an A Lange & Sohne is visually more interesting than a Seiko 5 watch, but it's NOT just about the price or perceived 'quality'. I have watches with a RRP of about £3K and watches that I've bought for £25 in my collection, and the one I wear the most was under £200! As always, thank YOU for posting an interesting and informative video.

Great collection. Funny, my first "real" watch was my Dad's circa 1984 Rolex Date (smaller brother to the Datejust), two-toned with pale champagne dial, which was given to him by a dear friend and business associate, and my beloved UN Maximarine Chronometer (opaline dial with Arabic numerals) which my Wife convinced me to buy on our honeymoon in 2007. The UN has never been serviced, the Rolex was serviced once that I am aware of in 2001 and both run like fine Swiss watches! Great minds!

Those polished center links are what puts me off buying the Rolex models that have them. They're just scratch magnets and the bracelets look worn very quickly. I guess you could just put them on a strap, but Rolex bracelets are so nice it's kind of a shame they don't use brushed center links on more of their watches.

The Daytona seems consummately impractical as a chrono -- have to unscrew the pushers ... and it doesn't have a rotating bezel ... but I'm probably actually the weirdo for *using* my chronos frequently ... Good looking watch, but a Type XXI seems way more usable -- and has a date and a flyback.

Beautiful collection ! And interesting coming from someone who lives and breathes all things watches.
Price becomes irrelevant really...Given the choice, I'd have left the Daytona on the table and grabbed the Seiko :) That's stunning.....
    All the best...and thanks 👍

I think I like that U-N best out of this fine selection.

I saw this video yesterday, and I can't get the Seiko out of my head. I woke up this morning and started reading about it, and just seen your other review on it. I've always wanted a Springdrive, but this Seiko ticks so many boxes for me (even though the Snowflake is drop-dead gorgeous, too). That gradient dial from blue to black looks like a gem. But, the only thing I have against Springdrive is the whole servicing deal. From what I've read, it's a bloody agony in the central bum-region and quite expensive, too. What's your thoughts, Mark?
Also, thanks for all the great content you're putting out. I love that you get so up-close to the engineering end of it, and you are genuinely excited by talking about it. No wonder you're TGVs first choice for a good watch talk.
