Subaru Solterra 2024 review: Does a last-minute EV price cut help the new Tesla Model Y rival?

  • It goes without saying that the 2024 Subaru Solterra mid-size SUV is a critical all-new model for the Japanese brand. After all, it's more than just another mid-size SUV - it's the marque's first all-electric vehicle. Yes, it may be 2024, but the brand is only getting onboard the EV train now.
    In fact, if it wasn't for Toyota, the Solterra might not even exist, with it very, very closely related to Brand T's own first EV, the awkwardly named bZ4X. The similarities between the two are so much so that there's little to seperate them, which is why Subaru has been so relatively aggressive with its pricing, knocking 10 per cent off its model's price the week before its Australian launch.
    In this expert review, CarsGuide Senior Journalist Tom White gets behind the wheel of the new Solterra to find out if it can compete with more than just the bZ4X in the value stakes - yes, we're looking straight at you, Tesla Model Y.

    I’ve bought two of these now and think they’re awesome! Fee over time the reliability and DNA of Toyota and Subaru will shine through

    Good review. Up front and honest in what's on offer. We have had an EV6 AIR for two years almost and for less Kia and Hyundai Niros and Kona and IONIQ5 recently. Yes, these are very fast but lacks sensibility of an everyday drive. Too fiddly electro switch gear. dislike Gear selectors in Hyundai. I hear comments discrediting the Range on the Toyota and Subaru, but the range over the other models I have mentioned here, are not what they say either. I have driven the Bz4X AWD and found it ticked the boxes that I dislike in the EV6/IONIQ5. I find that with EVs you drive country runs with more, but shorter stops with charge top ups work better than trying to go the full Monty when you drive, to then require a charge. If you have more than yourself in the car on long trips, peoples' bladder/tastebuds and other noisy distraction require more stops. Just do a top up at each stop if able to keep range rage away. We have 12 EVs in total at the moment and pricing the Subaru and Bz4R. EV5 will be of interest as well.

    I would want a nice riding city car …range is not such a big deal if the price is right. Rear passenger space looks excellent .This would make the short list.

    If you damage the battery pack when off-roading, what does a replacement cost?

    • @carsguide
      @carsguide  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      This will depend on many factors like whether individual cells can be replaced etc. but expect an entire battery to cost between $15,000 - $20,000 according to overseas figures. -Tom

    50kw is more than fast enough Just today I got 200km range in 30min at a 50kw charger

  • @AlexBoneff
    @AlexBoneff 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    all real-world reports on DC fast-charging for the 2023 model indicate it can never reach 150kw of charging speed;
    more like 50-75 ish...
    have you tested this?

    Range seems rather miserable, the interior is nice, but masses of piano black up front will attract far too much greasy dirt and fingerprints. The cost of this thing seems rather high if you want the higher model. , no frunk? And single motor? It’s not even remotely competitive with Tesla’s Model Y. Nice to drive and good ride quality, but you’d need to watch that range if you drive outside cities. A city car perhaps, and I wouldn’t take it off road. Surely Subaru can do better? Thanks for a good review. I drive an EV, and if the Subaru Solterra had been available in late 2023 when I bought my car, I wouldn’t have chosen it. What are the ervice costs?

    The biggest issue with this vehicle is the poor range. It won't sell because of this as that is a main factor in buying electric vehicles. The Lexus and Toyota on which this vehicle is based have similarly very poor range. If you use standardised testing and not the quoted range it is less then 400Km !!!. Most other vehicles are at least 590 and some are greater then 600km .using standard testing

      To be a bit more positive it looks great and would be very mcc on my list to by but for the range as I do some country driving through hills with the aircon on - all range killers to start with. YMMV

    Cheap plastic inside the cabin, so much piano black is like putting lipstick on a pig, the backlit dashboard warning lights (1990's much), the display of the ac temperature read out (out of date much), disproportionate wing mirrors.... and they want 50-70k for it..... HARD PASS BYD Seal is better value.
