I've leased a 2024 Solterra Limited for two months-$399 a month for 36 months, $0 down. I love its handling and comfort. I do not like the Subaru entertainment system on this model or our 2024 Legacy (a deer hit our 1018 Legacy's path, totaling the car). It's very complicated, and I must take my eyes off the road to use it. I wish the Consumer Product Safety Commission would forbid it. I'm retired and never drive more than 150 miles daily, so the Soleterra is perfect. I test-drove a 2024 Tesla Model Y twice. Its road noise was horrible, and I felt too many road bumps. I also test-drove a 2024 Tesla Model 3. It was outstanding in all aspects, except carso space. I need cargo space, which the Solterra has plenty of. Overall, I would recommend leasing the Solterra if you don't need a long-range vehicle.
I’ve owned 46 cars and trucks. I leased a Solterra 6 months ago because my Lexus GX470 got totaled. My friends and relatives are shocked when I tell them it’s one of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned. I’m getting 260 miles on a full charge. I mostly charge at home. It does everything I need it to do and does it very well.
My daily work commute is 60 miles round trip. Last weekend I have visited my sister who lives 90 miles from my house. Still had 170 miles of range when I got there. Went downtown for lunch and to charge the car. Only cost $12 to charge back to 100%. When I had my GX I would spend $60 on gas to make the trip and have to fill up again when I got home. Like the said the Solterra works for me. I don’t need to go 0-60 in 3 seconds or +300 miles of range.
I am so proud of you and I am in same boat, I have owned leased over 20 Luxry SUV, currently Q5 and MDX and decided to lease Solterra tomorrow. I think I am taking a good decion, it will be only for local drive, going to work, grocery shopping, taking kids to extra classes, sports activities as for long trips I have two 7 passenger SUV, I think I will be happy like you $329 down and 329+ Tax month for 36 month and residual value of 20K, what else I can ask for.
@@paulholterhaus7084 Part of that is from the trim, but on a lease that's really not your problem.. unless you have no intent on sticking out your lease terms. Limited has a residual of 25k, so around 50%. But, you're getting the 7500 dollar credit during leasing that you can't/won't get financing. These are going to mostly be lease turn ins unless someone manages to stay really far under their mileage. Hertz dumping their EV fleet hurt residuals, as did inventory recovery after covid. If someone can get one of these off lease or that was a dealer demo/loaner for around 25k with low mileage, the certified warranty, and a manufacturer backed extended, that would be a fairly decent deal.
I really appreciate your in-depth reviews! I picked up my 2024 Solterra with luxury package in Canada last week and have already logged over 1,800 km's on our vacation. Had a solid driving and charging experience and am absolutely loving the vehicle so far. We have quite the decent and maintained infrastructure in eastern Canada, so this defintely makes a difference. Now that I have had more time and a lot more miles on the vehicle, both city and long-distance, I can say that it is an absolute joy to drive and I am really loving it.
Boy some states get some amazing incentive deals. Just the standard 329 deal for me. Probably would have gone with the Ionic if the terms weren't so clunky ($4000 down, 24 months, but only around 200/month). 4000 up front is just a bit wild to me.
This is the kind of vehicle that the Alex on Autos/Auto Buyers Guide perspective/philosophy lends itself really well to, and the pragmatism argument is well taken. I think this was a great review in terms of both asserting your own position/argument on the car with conviction as well as recognizing the differences in the way the majority of the general buying public is looking at EV’s
@@thomasshi8863 In Washington state, Spokane Valley, 4WD with 2 versions of initial price 2023 zlimited 52000 USD and lower trim 2024 both 4WD costing initially 46000 USD. Monthly payments 185 USD, 2000 USD down 3 years, at the end 16000 USD down.
I leased the 2024 base model 3 weeks ago, my credit score was close to fair. 36 months, 12000 miles, $350 a month plus $2500 down payment. I bought a 3 year maintenance package for a very cheap $750. So I planned 3 years of zero problems with the car. I was actually going to buy the Toyota Ev model but it was more expensive. I looked at them both at the dealership and they were similar vehicles. I didn't want to overpay, the car meets all my expectations for city use. As a former Mercedes E series user, it is definitely more comfortable than the Mercedes with a more comfortable seating position. The vehicle's suspension is quiet and absorbs bumps on the road very well. The four-wheel drive system allows you to control the vehicle very safely. The vehicle has a charging cable for home with 120V output. I have used the charging station 1 time so far. When I come home from work, I plug it in and it charges around 15-20% in the morning, which is enough for me for daily use. Subaru also gives $400 charging station credit. As a result, it has been more than enough for me to travel from work to home, from school to the market on weekends in city life. I am very satisfied.
nope I was about to get Evolve* AWD but there is not much deals and Nissan is being stupid pushing 24 months lease, 4K down and 465 a month (stupid). vs I am getting Solterra 329 a month with 329 down. Listener Lease is the way to go for EV as most companies are offering huge Tax rebates ( 7500 or more) but what it does it brings your MSRP down and based on MSRP your residual comes down and you buy the same vehicle after your lease, if you dont like the vehicle while leasing, return and go for something else.
I have loved owning a BEV and a PHEV - so many people buy cars that have 10x the capacity they actually need, and then are shocked that someone would get something that covers only 100% of their needs I don’t think this vehicle covers even 75% of mine…
Sat in it at the New York International Auto Show. Dash cluster was blocked by the steering wheel. It's not a vehicle that I found myself comfortable in.
They aren’t painted because that’s how it is on every Subaru for a more rugged look that is capable of “off road*” type conditions. bZ4X has painted fenders because the target audience 🎯 is different. bZ4X gives a more stylish sleek look while Solterra (Latin for sun and moon) signifies a more outdoorsy type look. Sure you may not like the look, but what’s the vehicle capable of? That’s what matters
The all black interior would make me feel like I'm driving around inside a coal mine. The instrument cluster is form over function for perhaps the most critical interface in a vehicle. The only reason to have one of these in your driveway is because it has one of the cheapest leases in the USA. Shiny black plastics are always bad to actually live with. To purchase one would be a terrible financial idea since it going to depreciate like a Geo Metro.
Nobody in the US including Motor Trend has been able to come close to that 35 minute claimed time. That to me is a huge difference between it and the Mach E. False advertising on charge speeds just like they did with the 2023 version.
I own a Subaru Outback XT and a Tesla Model Y. My Subaru dealer has tried so hard to sell me a Soltera and I want to like it but the range, efficiency and charging speeds are a non starter. You forgot one more factor, you can get a Tesla model Y for 3-5k less in inventory at the end of the quarter. We just bought our Model Y Dual Motor LR for 44.6k plus we got 12.5k in tax credits because we live in Colorado, so we paid 32k! We are seeing efficiency of 260-270 kWh/mile. Plus we got 2 years of free supercharging since we traded in our Model 3. We have already driven across the entire state to go skiing and the Tesla is just so easy. The charging is ridiculously fast. It’s so fast at charging that we almost can’t get back to the car before it hits 100% and we were aiming for aiming for 80-90%. At the end of the day, I can’t justify any other brand until they come down in price. I also love not having to haggle. I watch inventory until I see the price I want and reserve. Done!
I’m leasing my 2023 Subaru solterra for $213 a month for 3 years 36 months. I charge it on my off grid solar panels therefore no cost to charge. I love the car, I only have a 12 mile commute so I don’t need to much to worry about longer trips etc. this car fits my needs perfectly!
Personally I still would not lease it and waste $8K on a 36 months lease. That $8k is 25% of a Prius LE $32K OTD here in my neck of the wood. And a Prius can go almost 500 miles on a full tank, in my 30 miles round trip commute I would only gas up every 4 weeks+, I only work 3 days a week in the office. If I want to go even cheaper I can get a Corolla Hybrid LE at $27K OTD.
It should be a wagon like the Outback, with over 140KW battery, to offer more range for road trips, less ground clearance. 2024 Impreza 2.5L Sport-tech is more tempting especially for long ski trips here in Canada. Range and handling are most important characteristics for me ... don't care much about power.
Thanks for bringing up the vampire drain. This is actually something I feel gets glossed over with EV's. I have an older Model S and I exclusively use public chargers. The 2 to 5% I lose every night isn't trivial. Something maybe worth mentioning is the Solterra having a heat pump, not too many EV's outside of Tesla have these.
Just reminds me that some legacy auto makers waited so long to really push the ev space to new highs. The entries of this and the BZ are the equivalent to "here, stop asking". The Hud-like setup is hard on the eyes is putting it nicely. The range questionable for its suggested usage and it has cheaper better competition.
The sweet spot for these is going to be those coming off lease or that were dealer demo/loaner fleets selling for around 25k. Get it low mileage, certified, and with a manufacturer extended warranty and you're gonna have a good deal. Pragmatic is a good word to describe it, it's for people not looking for all out performance, that don't want a Tesla, but want a comfortable around town vehicle. Even quick weekend trips haven't been a problem for me in my 24. I haven't pushed my mileage yet to see just how far I can get, but around 200 with hvac runnig seems to be where I'm at, but at 40 miles a week average it's more than adequate.
There's some crazy lease deals on these since the 2024 year is coming to a close. For the average consumer that wants to try it out, I think a lease deal would be great. Yes, it doesn't have the best range, not the fastest charge speeds, and has quirks, but it will be great for those looking for an EV commuter and would like to drive out to the mountains once in awhile. Like I said, it's got some great incentives going on and you can probably get one at a great payment. I wouldn't recommend this if you take long trips regularly.
When comparing EV charge times, peak charge power is only a small part of the equation, as charge curves vary widely and peaks are only met under ideal conditions.
Are some ICE auto makers, like Toyota and Subaru, overdesigning their EVs or they are making them ugly on purpose; may be to avoid cannibalizing their ICE product line?
@@100M2BFor years, people complained that Toyota and Lexus were boring. Perhaps this was their reaction to those comments. (I actually liked the boring look.)
@@JBM425 So, basically there are 2 types of cars they can do. Either boring or ugly. Those are head opposite of each other? And there are really no other options now, is there?. P.s. I really doubt they go look at the comments to figure out what the cars supposed to look like.
There are a bunch of these up here in the PNW. I'm personally not a fan of the tight cabin after sitting in one. Much prefer the ID4 with a larger perceived cabin. The ground clearance here will stand it apart.
I drove a Solterra for 6 days. I could handle the plastic molding on the body, the piano black interior and the low range because it worked well enough as a city car. The thing that was a absolute deal breaker was the digital gauge cluster. You either have to lower your seat to the bottom and move the steering wheel all the way up or force the wheel to almost kiss your legs and move your seat forward and up - maybe it doesn't work for 6' with long torsos. The drive quality is great for putting passengers to sleep - buttery smooth. The interior design choices are just facepalm.
If you can't charge at home, research your charging stations nearby before buying an EV that only gives you 230 miles. Similarly, make sure that the distant places you plan to visit have reliable stations along the way.
Unfortunately, this is a hard pass. I get Subaru’s vision of an all electric sensible car but it doesn’t match the platform Toyota provided them. I’d love to see what Subaru could do from the ground up.
I really liked test driving the 2023 Solterra. I really wanted to like it, but the strange lack of a glove box, mixed with the slow charge speeds and lower range are conflicting. The idea behind the car is one designed for going off the beaten path. So they gave us one that can’t go very far and would take much longer than the competition to charge to get to a destination. I still see the Solterra as a product great for people living in super muddy and/or snowy regions that would use it to putt around town comfortably. Where EV’s are most prominent, Southern California, it doesn’t make sense to buy one in a climate where the off-road capability isn’t really necessary. Speaking as a San Diegan who’s owned 3 Subarus and wanted to stay brand loyal.
Fellow San Diegan and a Subaru fanboy, had a deposit on the Solterra and never test drove it but figured out pretty quickly that it had some major flaws that would preclude me from writing the check, mostly that I had poor charging infrastructure at home. No driveway or a garage that would fit a vehicle. Bought a Impreza RS instead which I’m very happy with.
Was thinking about the Solterra, then heard the AC charging max of 6.6kW/h. That IS a show stopper, b/c I don’t always have overnight access to my 11.2kW capable home level 2 and need to fill during the day much of the time. Wow, slower than a GEN1 Bolt EV, what were Sub/oyta thinking? And no on-demand battery preconditioning. I can get a mini-spare, but I can’t fix the low-balled charging. Bummer.
There’s just no other way to slice it, the Solterra is not a good road trip vehicle. The poor range and slow charging speed limits its versatility. However, it is good as a second car for commuters and running errands and with those lease rates, makes this worth considering. The AWD system, high ground clearance, and suspension tuning is ideal for Northern climates that deal with snow and potholes.
I Love my Solterra & the amazing deal I got on it. It's not for everyone but seeing how Teslas are made with such cheap parts, I'll take my slower charging, less range &, performance in exchange for longevity & reliability. Done deal for me.
Have you recently tested the Rivian? I own an R1S and used to experience vampire drain when I first bought the vehicle maybe losing 1-2% per day but that has not been an issues for a while now as it was patched from an update sometime ago.
Really surprised Toyota/Subaru haven’t done an update to this. Haven’t found any good reviews on this. How can they be ok with a vehicle that falls short in so many ways? But it is the best looking Subaru to me. lol. Top model is same price as a Model Y Performance.
I like this Subaru a lot even though I am still not convinced how practical an EV would be in real life for me. No typical "HUGE" center touch screen... thank goodness! One thing stop me cold to even consider buying it... no rear wiper!
There is a backwards camera that makes a rear windshield viper useless, you just simply dont look through the back window, and with one you'd loose more range, and driving faster than 40 miles, water and snow will just slide off, should you for some reason use it.
@@oblivionnokk3531 In theory that should work as you have discribed however according to many full-time reviewers who even owned EV6 or iONIC 5 mentioned that it is a disaster in poor weather consider there is nothing to clean the rear camera as well. There is a very good reason why the newer iONIC 5 is putting the wiper back on the car.
People there is extra storage under the center arm rest.Just take the shelf out. That's were you will find the manual stored. Take the time people before you judge.
I see a lot of these and Toyota BZ4X's in Vancouver BC. Way more than I would have thought considering how they have been beat up on so many (not this one) reviews due to their 'short' range. I would definitely like one but I really don't like the steering wheel or the gauge cluster. I have heard people say you get used to it (like Mazda's dial controlled infotainment system). I look forward to testing one out.
That digital gauge cluster is one of the worst design ever, Toyota needs to get rid of it, just offer a regular one as well as regular round steering wheel. Also, that infotainment screen with climate controls and center console is asymmetrical, which is eyesore. Also, get rid of that black plastic cladding around the headlights. Nissan Ariya is the best looking EV so far in my opinion. This car is just bad.
Totally agree. Why do EV's have to look so alien? I just want a "normal" looking Electric car. Congratulations Toyota and Subaru, you made an electric Aztek.
As someone who likes to adjust the steering wheel as low as possible and still be able to see the gauge cluster, I completely disagree with that part of your take; the driver’s position is amazing for me as a result of the unusual gauge cluster design. I agree that the plastic cladding is ick.
European Solterra has a superior Japanese Panasonic battery instead of crappy Chinese CATL. These Panasonic battery has been demonstrated to do DC fast charging 135kw in very cold conditions.
Doug Demuro got this one right: one of the worst new cars for 2024. This car is loaded with compromises: No glove compartment. A steering wheel that has to live in your lap. No front trunk. Three separate cooling systems that are not integrated. A storage area with a window that cuts into usable storage (and no spare tire). Cheap and tacky upholstery. A very distant speedometer with tiny fonts. A battery that is purposely hamstringed to give the driver an artificial impression of longevity. Slow on board charging on 220. Expensive to buy with no Federal incentives. Inefficient heat pump that cannot function below 14 degrees... so as a result Winter range is halved. I think ANYONE who is a Toyota loyalist and with a brain deficiency should indeed buy this car. And, as a Subaru loyalist I have to say that this is just a Toyota that is sold at Subaru dealerships.
Yes but, the upside is you can lease these for dirt cheap because no one wants to buy them. Then in three years you can get a much better (potentially) Subaru EV. As a commuter in SoCal who wants a cheap car that comfortably fits 2 child seats, it works good for me. I dont like the cheaper EVs interiors as much as this ones, but that's just up to personal taste
@@normt430 I agree, for an around-the-town car, 23000 dollars could be a good deal for some. However, for me this would be a bad deal, for I intend to be driving about 5000 miles per year on road trips. This would not be feasible in this car. Subaru, supposedly will be coming out with their own line of EVs; and hopefully will solve the mechanical shortcomings such as poor thermal efficiency during the winter, which for me is critical in a climate that regularly gets down below zero. That would interfere even with modest road trips to the big city for me. Disgust with Musk is preventing me from buying a Tesla, which unfortunately is a much better car for my climate than for southern states (I do miss the Los Angeles of the 1950s, my early childhood home).
And there we are, I bought an ICE car 3 months ago, after all the dealership I visited were talking me out of buying an EV car. Someone maybe have an explanation why dealerships do not want to sell EV cars, because I can't figure it out.
loss of business on the repair and maintenance , EVs have fewer moving parts. More work on dealers to charge up EVs and have charging stations, vs they just fuel up ICE cars in minutes.
If you are talking about efficiency, combined hgwy+city in SUV category. Only Tesla Model Y(AWD, Long Range AWD, RWD) gets more Le/km. If you are looking at whole bev category then only Lucid air touring and pure, Ioniq 6, Model Y and 3 are the only ones more efficient than this/bz4x. They match Model S, EV6, Bolt EV and EUV. It still more efficient than ID4, Ioniq 5, Model X, Mach E and everything from BMW and Audi.
Look at any real world test and this falls massively behind the claimed efficiency and range, same with charging, this car never achieves even close to what it claims it can. In basically every real world test the ID.4, IONIQ 5 and others out preform it in terms of efficiency (and basically everything else) by a wide margin.
Subaru is strange. They cannot sell this car and have the highest inventory backlog of 82 days of product on the lots across America right now with only 2092 for sale. Meanwhile the Legacy, which they plan to discontinue permanently, has a 58 day supply and is the lowest inventory backlog with 3498 for sale. Not sure Subaru really has a handle on what America wants right now. The fact this is in the Subaru image of offroad, and there are no offroad chargers, with a range of only 220 miles - you can only go about 30 miles offroad before you have to return to civilization to charge (assuming you have to drive 70 miles to get to the offroad portion). Not very practical for off road use.
Anyone here can recommend me a quiet car Alex has reviewed recently? I have hyperacusis (cannot tolerate loud noise) so that factor matters. I believe the Genesis G80 electrified and the G90 could be the best options when we talk about riayd noise levels, and of course the Audi A8 and other luxury german cars as well. Thank you!
Once again, Alex and Auto Buyers Guide have read my mind. I was just thinking about all the hate that the bZ4x and Solterra received from EV car reviewers for their low charging speed might be a little more than unfair. By the way, your info card lists the Solterra as having a "continuously variable" type. Now that would be unique!
It is also the view of Consumer Reports, that the charging is subpar. However, in Toyota's defense, one of the reasons to have abysmally slow charging is to protect and prolong the battery. If the cooling system for the battery is inadequate, it is sensible to limit charging speeds.
@@ronkemperfulI would believe that if the bZ4X outside of the US also had such slow charging. Nope. The North American AWD bZ4X and all Subaru Solterras were saddled with the slower charging and frequently underperforming CATL battery, while Europe got the faster charging Panasonic battery in all their bZ4Xs.
yeah those EV car reviewers are all hella biased against Toyota and Japanese autos in general because they have more sensible approach that it is not just all-or-nothing EV future. It is hybrid, PHEV, EV among others. That really angers EVangelists and environMENTALists in them. Do not take them seriously. Afterall, bz4x is one of if not the best selling EVs in the electric car haven of Norway.
All these reasons why its bad is why you can now buy a loaded 2023 limited version with less than 5k miles for than less than 30k. And if you plan to charge everynight at home its the best ev deal on the planet today.
I really think if more people knew you could just trickle charge at home over night more would choose EV's.. There are so many people who think you need special electrical work done ..EV companies should push that narrative over range .
I still wouldn’t waste $6.5k on a 3 years lease on this. I would rather use that $6.5k toward a Corolla Hybrid or Prius LE, pay in cash and drive that thing for 15 years.
I leased a SOLTERRA At 100% charged my range was 232 m. Why's is it different from others? My charging time is 2 days and 5 hrs from home, 0 to 100%. there is no wiper at rear window.and visual was difficult during rainy days. much more during snow.. Disappointed on the charging time. Won't advise getting SOLTERRA.
This looks so much nicer than the new Forester. Too bad it's an EV. Would've been an awesome looking regular hybrid SUV or even better a 2.4L turbo SUV. As of now, it's relegated to being a very mid EV that's still too expensive
So you’re all saying your favorite Toyota hater is wrong for saying Toyotas are underwhelming in the real world…? Might want to check your prior comments where you laughed at me…😂
I see this and the Toyota sister as profit losses for both manufacturers to get around government mandates... I doubt either one will ever sell any volume or make a profit.
Well, you dont. Tbf, calling it an off roader is not really right, but its amazing on snowy roads. Unless you wana slowly charge from a diesel generator.
the thing with these financial incentives is that if you are in the income range that qualifies for the incentive, you can't afford the vehicle anyway. for example, in Canada, the incentives fall off in steps. So if you make $60,000 or less, you get the maximum $5000 rebate. Then it tapers off as your income goes up and if you make over $100k you don't qualify at all. I'm sorry, but if you make $60,000 per year, you can't afford a $60,000 vehicle. It's absolutely ridiculous. The solterrra and bz4x awd tech package trims are $65,000 CAD sticker price. They are one of the worst EVs on the market feature and (subjectively) aesthetically yet they are demanding a premium, not only that but interest rates are 8.99! On a 60 month finance that is a $1,500 monthly payment on a $65,000 car and $18,000 in interest paid. It is INSANE. A person making $60,000/year cannot afford that, neither can the person making $100k who doesn't qualify for the financial rebates. It's totally bonkers. Subaru and Toyota have lost their mind with this vehicle. You cannot find these lease deals in Canada. I don't know what's going on with that for the US and why we don't see anything similar here in Canada.
Why do I watch all of Alex's videos even tho I'm not in the market for a new car? I'm a detailer for a rental car company. And this video saved me so much headeache trying to to find the glovebox in this car.
I bought this car for my wife the BZ4X. And its literally the worst EV on the market. Its embarrassing. The residual value is terrible the implementation is horrible. Its just that Mr Toyoda, said, just get the damn thing done and out of our hair. Because they did nothing to make this a liveable EV. Its simply the worst. Dont consider either car. Subaru or the Toyota. The best design, and I mean I want it in ever single car. The drivers display at the window. Its simply a perfect design. To bad the rest of the car is bad.
This is a complete joke , Soltera,BZ4X and Lexus RZ shouldn't be throw out for sale , this 3 cars are a total mess in every aspect . How can this car be price same as an Model Y Long Range ?
Completely agree, those three EVs mentioned are completely garbage and this is coming from a Toyota and now Lexus household for the last 20+ years. Now if the RZ is $25k I would buy one just for my 30 miles daily commute. I would not pay a penny more on such embarrassment.
actually it makes perfect sense. Because off-road capable vehicles, not just EVs, have higher ground clearance and less aerodynamic thus eating up range compared to its less off-road focused competition. Look at the latest Mercedes G-class EV. It has a huge 116kwh battery. However, despite that under 300 mi of range. And that is in WLTP. In EPA it would be like 240-250mi
i do believe that the solterra battery is extremely well protected and in that sense its far sturdier than Hyundai EVs despite its flaws. i love cars visibility and 360 camera. the car is extremely smooth and fun to drive though i wouldn't buy one new. definitely will consider certified used
Compared with my 2017 Subaru Forester, the outward visibility of this car is quite terrible, the rear visibility with the massive C pillar and the hatchback is awful. But I agree with you, a 360 camera does help.
@@ronkemperful i do agree with you about the rear visibility and the C pillar, however I didn't find any issues with the forward visibility. i own a 2018 legacy and 2021 Crosstrek both of which have fantastic all around visibility and in that sense the solterra doesn't match them, but i love the instant torque and responsiveness. Though the range isn't helped by the 20" tires. one of the biggest complaints for the bz4x is the high rate of tire wear due to the weight of the vehicle, and the Solterra will be comparable in that regard. i wish they had considered smaller tires
@@z1az285 I agree. Tires on EVs tend to wear poorly, especially with the instant torque available. I tend to drive like an old lady from Pasadena and avoid quick takeoffs, so tire wear for me never has been an issue. My biggest complaint is after having driven my 97 year old uncle's Tesla Model Y, (yes he was 95 when he got his first EV) I am disappointed with so many compromises from a company such as Toyota that otherwise makes outstanding hybrids. Their first car was planned years after Tesla and other manufacturers designs... they should have emulated them and improved upon them..
As crappy as BZX4. To be expected from an identical car. Basicly, a "very fine" golf cart. Short range, slow charging and cannot do long trips since it has a limit on how many fast charges it can do in a row. To add insult to injury, it's not cheap. As an EV, there is no way to put lipstick on this pig!👎👎👎 At least if you buy the Lexus version they offer you a loaner if you need to drive far, unbelievable, but true!😂
I should also mention that when Tesla goes bankrupt, and hard to see how it won't with crazy nut Musky boy in charge, your Tesla will literally be both worthless and impossible to fix. The boring Solterra will still be on the road.
A big mistake for Toyota !!! Lost of wheels at the begining, invisible and awful cluster, range of a commuter car in winter. DC charge in winter is very slow and can even «freeze».
There is a huge storage compartment underneath the little tray that Alex showed inside/under the arm rest. He stopped just short of discovering it.
A lot of reviewers miss that. I had to show my dealership 😂
Even the guy that broke into my car found that compartment.

@@vikass-x8l You're saying the cat loses 60% of it's value in 3 Years........That is a no-go for Me.......Paul
Live in Co. Just leased the Solterra for 1200.00 dwn, 170.00 a month. Super stoked about how this will perform on the roads come winter time.
Boy some states get some amazing incentive deals. Just the standard 329 deal for me. Probably would have gone with the Ionic if the terms weren't so clunky ($4000 down, 24 months, but only around 200/month). 4000 up front is just a bit wild to me.
Alex, Maybe the range and charge times are less than ideal but where else can you get horizontally opposed boxer electric motors? 🤔😉🤣
Fair point, it just be a Subaru exclusive. -Travis

This is the kind of vehicle that the Alex on Autos/Auto Buyers Guide perspective/philosophy lends itself really well to, and the pragmatism argument is well taken. Leasing at $199 a month with zero down on 2024 premium, no complaints. EVs will be much better 3 years later.
In April 2024 Toyota BZ4X was leasing with 185 USD a month, 2000 USD down, with overall car price discounted by 16000 USD 3 years later.

199$ a month where ???
I am getting Touring with 2400 down and 380 a month.
We snagged a Limited and we LOVE it. Seems like youtubers probably get more clicks by beating up on the new car models.
You should have included Nissan Ariya in the comparison, it gets price reduction of up to $6000 for 2024 model year.
nope I was about to get Evolve* AWD but there is not much deals and Nissan is being stupid pushing 24 months lease, 4K down and 465 a month (stupid). vs I am getting Solterra 329 a month with 329 down.
I have loved owning a BEV and a PHEV - so many people buy cars that have 10x the capacity they actually need, and then are shocked that someone would get something that covers only 100% of their needs
I don’t think this vehicle covers even 75% of mine…
Which ones have your
owned?
Sat in it at the New York International Auto Show. Dash cluster was blocked by the steering wheel. It's not a vehicle that I found myself comfortable in.
I don’t love that it looks like the front fenders got replaced after an accident
The charge times may be more on the european marked side as here it goes to 150kw/h.
Done!
I had no idea these existed until I saw one in a Ford dealer used lot already.
You should see Hertz rental for sale for $23k.
Just purchased the 2023 limited Solterra with 5k miles for $28.5k . Great vehicles for the price!
I just bought my used 2023 Limited off a Ford dealer who traded it in for a Lightning. I'm happy with it.
My '24 Solterra peaks around 142kw when I charge from 5% to 80% takes about 28min
After 80%.....go get a sandwich and get comfortable. 80%to 100% takes about 40min
Good review, however why wasn’t the Nissan Aryia not added to competitors list.
Cant beat that price :)
What do you think a 140 KWh battery would cost?
@WesBelisle weight of that pack would be an issue also, it would feel like a dump truck 😊
2024 BZ4X AWD charged from 18% to 80% in 35 minutes. In 65 degree weather on an EvGo Delta 350 kw charger. Peak was 92 kW.
4:10 Agreed. DC fast charge times are less important than AC charge rate and this car’s pathetic AC charge rate is the real problem.
If you run it low consistently, yes. Day to day it still likely wouldn't be an issue. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide So not a problem until it is a problem. Its just poor in today's world.
@@zoltrix7779Its just poor in USA, where there is panasonic batteries like here in the EU, it charges much faster.
The model Y yes but you pay a stiffer price. Something to remember, Subarus AWD has no equal on wet or dry pavements, in gravel or on dirt.
When comparing EV charge times, peak charge power is only a small part of the equation, as charge curves vary widely and peaks are only met under ideal conditions.
6.6 kW for AC is misleading. That's a generic reference. From 240 volts at home, you will draw a steady 30 amps. That's a rate of 7.2 kW
That's the difference between what comes out of your wall and what goes into the battery.
@default7950 No, that's just the max that could be delivered from a public charger... 32 amps @ 208 volts.
Are some ICE auto makers, like Toyota and Subaru, overdesigning their EVs or they are making them ugly on purpose; may be to avoid cannibalizing their ICE product line?
I can't imagine that would be the case. -Travis
It does seem like Toyota, Subaru, and Lexus are designing their products ugly on purpose. We just don't know what that accomplishes. 🤣
@@100M2BFor years, people complained that Toyota and Lexus were boring. Perhaps this was their reaction to those comments. (I actually liked the boring look.)

@@JBM425 GR86 looks pretty good to me but yes, these 2 EV twins are hideous
Alex, thank you so much for this review! I love your content. So informative and concise.
Unfortunately, this is a hard pass. I get Subaru’s vision of an all electric sensible car but it doesn’t match the platform Toyota provided them. I’d love to see what Subaru could do from the ground up.
Same.
Thanks for including miles per kilowatt hour, range is important but so is economy.
Plus the one year old Premium from Hertz us going for $23k.
Personally, I would wait 5 years and just buy one of these cars used and utilize it as a commuter car.
With lease prices as low as they are it makes a good argument for a commuter car right now. -Travis
Hertz is dumping 2023's. Premium (Base) are 23-24K. Premium (Mid Trim) for 28-29K. Buying new, you better get one hell of a discount.
Surpring these are dripping faster than comparable one year old bz4x's!
Alex, there's now a lease available for the Toyota BZ4X for $159/month!!
No appetite for practical EVs? What of the Bolt? The Leaf? I suspect when EV3 and other next gen affordable EVs drop, they will explode in popularity

Doesn't Canada Subbies have the Panasonic batteries like we do in Europe which have more range?
That digital gauge cluster is one of the worst design ever, Toyota needs to get rid of it, just offer a regular one as well as regular round steering wheel. Also, that infotainment screen with climate controls and center console is asymmetrical, which is eyesore. Also, get rid of that black plastic cladding around the headlights. Nissan Ariya is the best looking EV so far in my opinion. This car is just bad.
Totally agree. Why do EV's have to look so alien? I just want a "normal" looking Electric car. Congratulations Toyota and Subaru, you made an electric Aztek.
@@Ghostbustingjedi that’s why I will never buy any Tesla, I will just patiently wait for the Honda/Acura’s own EVs.
I actually don’t mind the gauge cluster, I admit it looked very weird at first but in person, it is more intuitive and normal feeling in person
As someone who likes to adjust the steering wheel as low as possible and still be able to see the gauge cluster, I completely disagree with that part of your take; the driver’s position is amazing for me as a result of the unusual gauge cluster design. I agree that the plastic cladding is ick.

The steering wheel needs to go in 2025. It’s ridiculous and also the other display by the steering wheel that needs to change as well.
But if you are looking for used coming off Hertz rental lot these are down to $23k.
As someone once said, this car was designed by people who don't care for people who don't care either
Ditch the piano black in the interior and square off the trunk and I'd buy it
If you are talking about efficiency, combined hgwy+city in SUV category.
Thank you!
I heard Rolls Royce makes insanely quiet cars. Better bring your checkbook 😊
I want a wicked fast EV.
Wait this isn't a wicked fast EV?
Well I'm out.
@@miraphycs7377Just checked, and you’re correct, the BZ4X is selling reasonably well in Norway, I’m a bit surprised.
It deserves the hate, that charging performance in 2024 is not remotely acceptable especially on a car this expensive. Range sucks too.

Subaru should really get a Tacoma or Land Cruiser at this point.
Square wheel and piano black?
Adding at least 50 miles more range is extremely important.
there are lease deals under $180 with 0 down
I still wouldn’t waste $6.5k on a 3 years lease on this. I would rather use that $6.5k toward a Corolla Hybrid or Prius LE, pay in cash and drive that thing for 15 years.
I hope Subaru do much better with their next EV, this one is a disappointment.
How do you find an off road charger?
"Do you want to buy an EV?"
Me: "Maybe in about 10 years."
There will be plenty of options for you. -Travis
Why do I watch all of Alex's videos even tho I'm not in the market for a new car?
I'm a detailer for a rental car company. And this video saved me so much headeache trying to to find the glovebox in this car.
"Where do you put you registration?" In normal countries, that's up to the police to check, after all, what does a peice of paper prove?
Did he say 9 hours to fully charge this abomination?
"something off-road capable" does not make any sense with the real-life range of 150-170 miles.
actually it makes perfect sense.
Give it a solar panel!
Its like selling a PC I3 cpu, with 8GB ram for the same price as a I7 cpu with 32gb ram. Horrible price point
i do believe that the solterra battery is extremely well protected and in that sense its far sturdier than Hyundai EVs despite its flaws. i love cars visibility and 360 camera. the car is extremely smooth and fun to drive though i wouldn't buy one new. definitely will consider certified used
Compared with my 2017 Subaru Forester, the outward visibility of this car is quite terrible, the rear visibility with the massive C pillar and the hatchback is awful.
It’s a good car, but not at MSRP
As crappy as BZX4. To be expected from an identical car. Basicly, a "very fine" golf cart. Short range, slow charging and cannot do long trips since it has a limit on how many fast charges it can do in a row. To add insult to injury, it's not cheap. As an EV, there is no way to put lipstick on this pig!👎👎👎
At least if you buy the Lexus version they offer you a loaner if you need to drive far, unbelievable, but true!😂
يبدو ان سوبارو خرجت من المنافسة في قطاع السيارات الكهربائية
Wow that black plastic around the car is hideous.
Don't insult the Forester by bringing it up on the video about this trash car. They couldn't even be bothered to paint it
It doesn't take much to be the prettier sister of the BZ4x. That poor thing's been thrashed by multiple ugly sticks 😊
You could not pay people in the UK to have one of those it's the last nail in uk Subaru's coffin ⚰️ it's no good for nothing won't pull a trailer.
