    Getting the right camper van conversion can be tricky in a small van, check out this video to see what decisions I made to get the right mix for my van.

    • @VantasticIdeas
      @VantasticIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว

      The rear conversion has some good benefits if it suits your needs. I think the main thing to watch out for with my conversion is that you have the seat rails that go all the way to the front and if the bed length is good enough. If you watch my bed conversion video ( th-cam.com/video/Qy871J2cICg/w-d-xo.html ) you'll see my final steps for making the bed as useful as possible with this layout.

    Sage words about the fitted hob - I like having ours for an occasional cup of tea, but for cooking I'm always going outside with a folding table and a separate hob set. I like your set up - I'm thinking a 3/4 rock n roll bed with a side bench/storage box set up for a full width bed, and a similar kitchen to yours. Nicely done and great video.

    Hey absolutely brilliant video, the last conversion was a real winner, that said I loved the box that doubled as part of the bed. I’ve done something very similar, ours houses the Chem’Loo but also acts as a bench seat when eating at the table.
    The ONLY thing wrong with ours is my wife has to sleep diagonally, because the design of the cabinet/unit juts out into the bed space...she’s always got a corner to contend with. I’m going to build a smaller curved unit with a s even teardrop shape burner and sink all intergrated. My issue is taking all the electrics and gas apart...I haven’t a clue where to start!

    • @VantasticIdeas
      @VantasticIdeas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the positive feedback 👍 It is a great place to hide the loo, mine didn't fit in that space unfortunately. We had the exact same problem with the mid side conversion (conversion 2) I was always diagonal or bent around the kitchen unit!! I used to wake up with all sorts of aches down my side, so it had to go in the end.
      Taking the gas and electrics out can be daunting, if you label everything and take lots of pictures it can be done. Cheers!!

      @VantasticIdeas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! yes having the seat belts for the kids was a priority for me. With such small vans it's never going to be perfect, so compromises are needed. @@VantasticIdeas excellent. I suppose it's how the bed actually goes together and fits in with your coking area etc. How the storage area is fitted and your amazing pull out drawers. do they sit on the seat runners or have you fitted a rail. Thanks, it's been a super useful drawer. It does have wheels on the bottom (they were wheels designed for under-bed drawers so low profile, plus I inset them so the drawer could be as low as possible). I drilled the locks straight into the plastic trims, but might improve on that, but seem to work well. If you'd like more info just let me know!

    Thanks for the video, really detailed and to the point. The row of standard seats that you have now in your current DIY side conversion, are they just the standard 3rd row seats? Also have you had to fit child seats to them? (have read of some issues of fitment of child seats)

    Another Bongonaut here! I love your conversions, and the beautiful finish on them. Very inspiring!
    I treated myself to some power tools (circular saw, jigsaw etc.) for Christmas so I'm now at least in with a chance of learning to make the furniture for my Bongo myself. My big question is how do you fasten the wooden panels (cupboard sides etc) to the vehicle body? I'm stumped on that basic point! Any advice very welcome. Cheers! 💐

      Hi, sounds like you're all tooled up and ready to go!! it's so satisfying making it yourself and watching your creation come to life. I'm going to try and make the unit removable so I'm going to redo the fixing points at some point (I'll make a video about that when I do). If you have a decent wooden floor installed you can screw down to that. For more security you can drill into the metal floor (super carefully) and use self clinching nuts (then you can just bolt down to those). I also secured the worktop to the plastic side trim as it's very firm. Good luck with your project!!

      On the passenger side the little storage seat/unit I updated it so it's got a quick release system. The drivers side is a bit more of a pain and you have to prop up the seat when you lift it to access the engine bay, not ideal but manageable.
      I'm going to be making another version of my kitchen pod with some new features and I intend to make it removable so I can get better access to the engine bay. Cheers!

    As a first time owner of a bongo, silly question have you lined the floor with ply first before doing the conversion, if not how do you fix the units to the base

    • @VantasticIdeas
      @VantasticIdeas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! The floor was already ply lined when I purchased the van. I fixed the kitchen to the floor with brackets (quite a few) and screwed into the floor, then the worktop is also connected to the side panel via brackets. The rear box is bolted to the floor using the previous conversions nuts that were installed.

    Great video. I've been trying to work out the best layout for my Bongo for a while now and your current option looks to tick all the boxes. I'm surprised the bed is long enough on the sink side, I'd been put off doing anything that restricts the bed space.
    Do you have any tips for children in small van/campers? Maybe a future video idea ;-) I have a 10 and a 6 year old and you can't put both up in the top as they just will not settle. I'm thinking of getting an awning and sticking the oldest in that!

    • @VantasticIdeas
      @VantasticIdeas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, glad it's been useful :) It's so tricky getting the right layout. As for bed length it does depend on how tall you are, my wife or one of our kids is usually that side being slightly shorter than me (but I've been that side and slept fine). As for the other side you would have the option to extend the bed with maybe a simple board set up (or use dining table) so you could have a hugely long bed. I usually mock everything up inside the van before committing to anything.

    • @VantasticIdeas
      @VantasticIdeas  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It doesn't detect the rust, but it will let you know if something has been heavily filled with filler! as the magnet won't stick to filler only metal :) It's common on Bongos to be bodged up with filler so take a magnet (maybe not too strong a magnet) along with you.

    I’m 6’4”. Is there a configuration that somehow magically allows me to sleep at full stretch? I’m seriously considering a bongo due to what you get for your money - nearly all other campers are so much more expensive…

    • @VantasticIdeas
      @VantasticIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With this layout (and I imagine with most others) you could add an extra (foldable) extension to the end of the bed. There's usually room behind the passenger seat to do something like that. I measured that out in my dimensions video (th-cam.com/video/ioZXs4UXc_4/w-d-xo.html) where you could potentially have up to 8ft.
      They're not massive vans, but like you say often better value than a lot of alternatives.

    • @NickOdantzis
      @NickOdantzis ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VantasticIdeas thanks for the info! I’m just wondering - if you were to do a slimline rear conversion, would that give enough room for both passengers? I don’t need 8ft, but about 6’6” would be sufficient for me stretched out I think. Can the seats be moved forward to give more space for increasing bed length? Thanks.

    • @VantasticIdeas
      @VantasticIdeas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NickOdantzis Yeah that would be a good option, one thing that would determine the depth of the rear conversion is if you wanted a fridge and how deep that fridge is, as they are one of the bulkiest items. As for seats, some Bongos have different configurations of seats so be sure to check if the runners are where you would need them, but usually you can move the seats all the way forward. You can even turn the seat round to face into the back if needed. Cheers!
