- Another quick one-off on a Dark Souls Mechanic I wanted to dedicate a quick solo segment to, as I don't think this is well-known.
The Lifehunt Scythe is a very powerful weapon with a huge downside that forces you to dedicate your build lest you find yourself quickly losing 50% of your HP, but if you just want that extra bleed build-up you can hotswap to it for the final bleed build up and gain the extra 10%ish bleed damage!
Lifehunt Scythe was my go to weapon for PVP back in the day, able to deadzone shields and bleed em out quick. simply put on the blood shield and keep some moss ready

Yeah I was dying for a way to turn off enemy AI, but that fact you can also eliminate damage dealt to enemies while still seeing the damage done is super helpful. Was able to capture the remaining footage for the 80+ weapons I didn’t have in like 1/4 of the time as the previous 50ish
@@trevthedev6134 I think DSR Gadget is made for speed runners and testers like you tbh. I only came across it because I am developing a mod and this helped me get items to test it all out.
i knew priscillas dagger on offhand to proc bleed was a good call, but never tought of lifehunt scythe due to the self damage, using another bleed weapon to build it up seems a great solution tho
Chesters set, pharis hat, blood shield, blood bite ring, lifehunt scythe. Try it sometime.
Having the Bloodshield and Bloodbite Ring basically eliminate the drawback and are pretty entirely worth the slots, IMO. Very few enemies live long enough for you to proc the bleed on yourself. Can't say I've ever been in a "long, drawn out fight" when using the Lifehunt Scythe. I like to 2Hand the Scythe anyway, so I'm not parrying or blocking while using the weapon. And I wear the Gold Hemmed Set with it, so there's no need to use Havel's ring.
Yeah I think the intention is to have this and Priscilla's dagger used in both hand slots for a build. Chip chip chip away with the little dagger, then land a couple hits with the scythe for the big bleed outs.
Lifehunt Sychte is very powerful againts weak to bleed high hp PVE foes.
Used with blood bite ring or blood shield and rarely blood moss too.
Eg. Infested barbarians, drakes, Snake Soldiers, and the 3 Asylum demon bosses.
In NG+ cycles triggering a bleed for 50% health loss usually kills basic high hp enemies.
I wonder how fast the status decrease seems to lose around 4-5 points per second decrease regardless of the character resistance bar.
Maybe it is the same for the PVE enemies.
Wikidot's resistance stat page seems to be good for enemy status resistance.

For a game that's been analyzed to death, but still has a lot of misconceptions surrounding some calcs it's really nice to actually have breakdowns like this. Good stuff man!

I’m split. It’s great damage but I like going poise heavy big weapon builds, so doing 50% to myself is a big turnoff.

You really cant compare the +0 Great scythe with the +0 Lifehunt scythe, as the Lifehunt scythe is a +10 ascended weapon and thus should be compared to +10 great scythe
Unupgraded Great Scythe damage shouldn't be compared to unupgraded Lifehunt. It's a special weapon type, therefore equal to a +5 titanite weapon. Just saying.
*edit Only talking about the AR, I'm aware this doesn't affect bleed which is the video's subject.
I'd equate it more closely to a +10, since that's what boss soul weapons require and are thus a direct lateral move from

Well there has been some discussion about that in the comments lol. Apparently it’s a bit divisive. I’d always assumed a female because that’s the name of a Norse god who’s female, but it seems most translations use a masculine form for wolf (not all however)
I thought the aux effect of 500 on Lifehunt Scythe meant that bleed takes away 50% of an enemy's max HP?
It does but bosses(named health bar) take reduced bleed % damage.
This is true in DS3 and Elden Ring as well.
% based damage gets reduced to bosses likely for balance reasons.
Normal basic enemies will take the normal 30,50% health loss.
The number shown is the buildup per hit / 10. You can think of it as a separate HP bar - once you deal enough of that type of damage, bleed occurs. So for Sif, as she has a Bleed resistance of 200, once you do 200 bleed damage it takes away a % of her HP. I think every weapons except Priscilla’s does roughly 10% of a bosses HP, and I think 30% of regular enemies.
Most late game bosses are immune or really resistant so a dedicated bleed build will fall off after Anor Londo.
So what I'm hearing is, use the jagged ghost blade 6 hit combo and follow it up with the lifehunt scythe
Haha good luck farming that bad boy. I think there are only the 2 ghost mother that drop it? Honestly you're probably best off off-handing a different dagger or weapon that does bleed build up.
@trevthedev6134 the jagged ghost blade with the 6 hit combo drops from all the reachy stabby ghosts. The other ghost blade is the one that drops from the 2 screaming lightening banshees. My dex mage on the switch has both lol jagged ghost blade is my favorite weapon next to the catch pole. Can't believe I never thought to follow it up with the LHS before your video!
I have used both the Great Scythe and Lifehunt Scythe in my very first run three or so years ago, I wore the highest bleed resist armor I could find to reduce buildup on myself, I have no idea if it actually worked but it definitely felt like it did, I never thought of doing this and switch to another weapon for easier buildup but I probably came across it accidentally a couple times, neat!
In my experience, the gargoyle tail axe is usually better than the bloodshield, I don't know if there are edge cases or what where the bloodshield is better, but generally the tail axe is more useful.

Bandit knife? It attacks faster, idk about bleed build up tho.
I think (still going through getting attack frame data for attack speeds) a double R2 on the jagged ghost blade might be the highest bleed buildup in terms of bleed per second? Does 5 hits total for 150 bleed buildup over less than 3 seconds. I think it’s slightly faster than the PGCS, but they’re pretty comparable in that respect (PGCS can be buffed though)
Not trying to dismiss anything from here but I kinda doubt anything managing to be a drawn out fight with the lifehunt scythe, though I suppose there'll be more of a problem if you really can't use the bloodbite ring for some reason, cool video though
Yeah I am more so thinking in higher NG cycles against tougher bosses. Also a tough weapon to use for area clearing, definitely more of a boss weapon.
@@trevthedev6134 yeah absolutely a boss weapon, I have only used it in NG but I distinctly remember basically blinking with Kalameet falling to the lifehunt scythe, and that being the major point I can remember with the lifehunt I'm not sure how long myself it'd take for the self bleed to become a concern against a boss.
I used lifehunt scyth as a main build for a playthrough and if you offhand the blood shield and have the bloodbite ring then it takes like 20 attacks before you get a bleed prock and if you need more then that then just use a blood red moss
I never realized how good the bleed damage was on this weapon. If you use the red moss clumps it could actually be worth using for bleedable bosses. Also I'd like to see it used in the moveswap with the bonewheel shield because it will hit faster
This is neat! Priscilla's tail dagger is the only other weapon that does this much bleed damage on proc. It builds up 20 bleed meter per hit instead of 50, though.
I already knew this just intuitively. My reaction to these videos is always "surely everyone already knows this?" But I'm autistic about this game and i forget not everyone obsesses over it like me, to find out every single thing. Thats why i like your channel.
Armor - Gargoyle Helm, Sage Robe, Smough's Gauntlets and either Blood-Stained Skirt or Maiden Skirt

What is great scythe?
remember to subtract the damage of the hit that triggers the bleed when comparing the health bars in the screen shot. the bleed on the life hunt scythe did about 10 segments while the hit itself was doing 2, while the great scythe was only pulling half a segment in damage and the bleed did 5-6ish.
The great scythe only does 20 less flat damage when on +15 compared to a +t lifehunt while having the same scaling, all thos said the great scythe can be buffed and you dont have the bleed build up on you
Yet another reason to use my two favorite weapons in the game. Thank you for sharing this stuff, its so cool to see somebody still researching the details of the game
counting pixels is pretty silly. it should be possible, with cheat engine at least, to calculate the damage values directly

Hey man, I’ve been watching some of your challenge runs and it’s cool to see you break into this type of content. I usually watch on the TV so I’m not able to comment. DSR is still surprisingly active to this day and it’s nice to see someone clear some stuff up for newer players since it’s less apparent than later titles. If you run out of ideas, you could do build specific videos as well. Not sure if you enjoy the PVP aspect but minmaxing builds is one of my favorite parts of the series. A PVP mechanics breakdown of stuff like invasion ranges or how animation priority works would be a good couple videos.
Good luck doing these informative videos. Hopefully they get more concise but other than that these are pretty cool.
does the bleed count need to tick over 200 cause if so 30*5 is 150 plus the 50*1 takes it to 200 flat (one less hit needed with great scythe)

I don’t believe so, but I think there is a hidden ‘status’ bar for bleed / poison buildup, similar to the player, so it you hit exactly 200 with that combination it might not proc if you don’t get a hit it quick enough. At least that’s how it works in ER I believe. Will be something I cover in my next video.
Status should decay over time, so likely you would still need that extra hit.

Adding the Bloodbite Ring gives a huge chunk for the build up meter too!
Combination of the ring of F.A.P., bloodshield on the back while 2 handing scythe, armor with bleed resistance, the right stats, and proper attack timing makes the lifehunt so worth it, at least for a chaotic player such as myself
Gargoyle Halberd/Axe has higher bleed resistance buff than bloodshield
@@RandomGameClips27 and that would work if I didn't mention the 2 handing the scythe for the extra damage. I'll have to try it I've always gotten it but never used it
Kirk's armour has high bleed resistance, if I'm not mistaken, while also providing utility in additional damage on rolls. Bloodshield is good, but like Wonderking said, the Gargoyle weapons will be better on your back for the pure resistance.
If you have the equip load to spare, you can have the gargoyle weapon _and_ the shield in your left slots, and toggle whenever the situation calls for more resistance or a shield.
@amberhernandez thank you for providing more context than wonderking about that. I'll have to give Kirk's armor another try. I personally don't like the look as much as the dark armor. As far as darker armor goes for souls fashion

What about Priscilla's Dagger?
It has the same bleed buildup and does the extra bleed damage, but you don’t get tagged with self inflicted blood loss. The trick still works if the final hit to trigger blood loss is from the dagger.
@@trevthedev6134 I remember having a build with both the Dagger and the Scythe and i always thought i procd bleed faster on the Scythe lol even though the Dagger attacked faster!
Why Sif is called she?
I’ve always thought that was his/her gender. Apparently the Japanese translation uses a masculine form of wolf so he’s probably male?
Well, that's just straight up a miss from the devs. To fix this you could give every bleed spEffect another "spCategory" so they all don't stack but each would have their own bleed stack.
Hey at least it works to our benefit! Maybe they did catch it and that’s why there is just one type of bleed past DS1.
I would argue the shared bleed buildup for different damage-values was known and intendet (or at least tolerated), given that the poison status has many different damage-tick-values which all use the same buildup-meter, while having the source that fills the buildup-meter determine the rate of hp loss (and even the actual tick rate in the Remaster) [just like bleed].
It's hard to overlook such a thing, when there are more than a dozen different poison-tick-values.
The mechanic remains unchanged in later Fromsoft-Games:
- Sekiro even has an Item where you can poison yourself to prevent a more harmful poison to take effect (see: Contact Medicine)
- In Elden Ring you can start inflicting normal poison on an enemy, before switching to a source of 'deadly poison' (see: Venomous Fang) to finish the buildup [again: the hit that procs the status-effect determines its properties]
Elden Ring also techically has two types of blood loss, dealing 15%maxHp + 100 flat dmg / 15%maxHp + 200 flat dmg respectively, depending on the weapon used [I got that info from the Fextralife-Wiki] and they still use the singular bleed-buildup-meter.
honestly the build up is fairly manageable with the bleed reduction shield and ring, and you can always carry red moss clumps to heal the bleed when it gets too high.
The damage it does is absurd, even on bosses that don't bleed. I really love this weapon and its risk reward mechanic!

I’ve seen both, but IIRC in Norse myths Sif is a women so that’s what I go off.
@@trevthedev6134 yeah I looked it up. "Despite sharing a name with a Norse goddess, Sif's gender is unconfirmed, and is not directly stated in either the English or Japanese versions of the game. In translations for languages that have grammatical gender, the masculine form of "wolf" is often used when referring to Sif." SO, for pretty much every other language, Sif is a guy. Only going off of Norse can you say Sif is a girl. Therefore it is more likely Sif is intended to be a guy. Why else would they translate him as such in different languages?
