Ep 6 Fretboard Stabilising - Hand Tool Only Acoustic Travel Guitar Build - From 4x4 FENCE POST

  • In this episode, Ben does a lot of sawing by hand to get to enough woods to book match the top, back, and sides. He also stabilises the lightweight, relatively soft Mahogany fretboard using thin superglue, and then has to re-cut the fret slots and install the frets. Oh, he also has a minor slip-up...comment when you see it.

Welcome to Crimson Guitars th-cam.com/users/CrimsonC... and Ben's home workshop.
You asked and Ben will deliver...our eccentric (read insane) Luthier will be building an entire guitar out of a single piece of Mahogany! With hand tools only...maybe!
    Chapters:
    0:00 Introduction and recap
7:12 Plane saw and repeat. Where to begin though? Perhaps sharpen the plane?
    11:40 The Plan!
12:17 First cut......and many saws later he is still going. Bet he is regretting this build!
16:42 First plank a success, 5 more needed. Rinse and repeat.
21:52 Onwards and upwards - gym workout not needed.
26:51 A break from sawing so back to the neck and headstock - and spooges of superglue?
30:47 Sanding with the beam and then High Build Finishing Oil. Perfect shine, but .............
    36:30 Re-cutting the fret slots
39:44 OH NO! He has just realised......
40:45 Back to the fret slots.
41:42 Frets are going in next, however, there is a slight hitch that needs addressing!
    49:52 Conclusion

A common literary device is dramatic irony, where the audience has access to information the characters don't. As the story continues, the audience feels increasing tension as the characters continue to progress without a key piece of information, as in the tragedy of Oedipus, or the Hand Tool Guitar Build. Both Oedipus and Ben make mistakes early in the story that are eventually revealed to the horror of the protagonist and, depending the audience's temperament, any emotion between resignation, catharsis, or even delight of the viewer. In modern literary criticism, we refer to this moment of elucidation as a BIG OOF.

I would say in your defence, a bit of buffing is not part of the actual construction. But oh the fun when you realized. I can but imagine that King Cnut moment of realisation that the tide was not for stopping. Cest la vie.

Tim is actually a distant cousin of mine and even came to our family reunion, once. He’s a cool guy and so are you!
Thank you for all the wisdom and boost of confidence for my building. I’m getting ready to start my second guitar. Hopefully you’ll see me in a build off soon.

Once this build is done I'd love to see a bladed-tool-only build; saws, chisels, planes, spokeshaves, and scrapers only (with an exception of files/abrasives for fretwork, and drills for wiring/hardware). Would be great to see how a flamed top looks with sliced rather than abraded fibres... Plus it would give you an excuse to get out your violin makers' planes!

  • @MrAaroncissell
    @MrAaroncissell 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ben just want to point out that at the start of the video you did say (The powerless build except for that "one time" we will not talk about) So that one time drilling now that one time buffing. Your all good. If you don't go to two times using power tools for a singular task your covered. I am sure that if there is electronics you will want to use a Soldering Iron.

For all of that heroic sawing. For giving me a great idea for the next build for you. For the huge amount of fun and entertainment that this is. For working on the hottest day of the year so far. For planing wood like a don you are completely forgiven for the two minor power tool incidents. Especially as you explained what and why you were doing it before you realised your blunder, it was a genuine and in my view valid mistake.
    BUT
In order to put the record straight and to achieve full forgiveness I reckon the next build should be power tools allowed but no modern chemicals. We would love to watch you boiling up a few fish heads for glue and chasing shellac beetles and distilling your own alcohol to dissolve them in from potato ferment made from the warmth of your tube amp.... oh yes and picking the nettles for the green fretboard dye that we all so want to see.

Don't worry Ben, we'll let you off! Actually, one thing I should start doing is using a triangular file to go over the top of the fret slots, like you say. Not because it guides the tang in (although it does), because I've never had a problem with that before. But because if/when you have to refret ot take the frets out, if you don't go over the top of the frets and put a bevel on the edges (with the triangle file), the barbs on the fret tangs will tend to pull chunks of wood out of the fretboard. If you put those micro-bevels on the top of the fret-slots, it will tend to stop that from happening.

On long rips, start as you did with a guide cut either side then make a start on the actual rip cut from one side, complete say, 15 or 20 passes of the saw and then turn the wood in the vice and do the same from the other side. Rinse and repeat. By doing that, you'll cancel out the drift and stay on line a lot easier. :)

FINALLY! I waited soooo long to see this build continue! It was great to see the tops and backs cut. One thing I have found out about using hand tools only for a project, is not to be near any power tools at all! 🤣 I know it sounds silly, but if a power tool is handy, you will pick it up. We have been spoiled.
The use of super glue for a finish blew me away! There is a satiny look to the fretboard that as you pointed out looks vintage. I love it!
Thanks so much for bringing this back! I can’t wait to see the body of the guitar being built!

Very glad to see this build moving forward. I have a similar large fence post (cedar in my case) and I was considering making sides out of it for an arch top. Maybe the back as well, I don't know, haven't built anything acoustic before. The hand tools part is important, as I don't currently own a bandsaw. Thanks for this!

I made a tool a few weeks ago from an old pair of fret-pulling pliers with a notch in for the specific purpose of spreading the fret tang when it's too narrow for the slot. Works well, though it does tend to straighten the fret a little, so I need to slightly over-radius the fret to compensate.

I've got a socket that used to have a lamp plugged directly into it and I would use the switch on the socket to turn the lamp on and off. Later I needed to power a modem/wireless router, so I put the lamp and router into a 4-way and always good... except that I'd forget and switch the lamp and router off at the socket! My solution was to put a post-it note over the socket with "NO!!!!" scrawled on it. I suggest Ben does the same to all electric sockets and electrical devices for the duration of the build.

I feel your pain Ben. I've started my GGBO scratch build yesterday and it's been a hand tool only build so far. Probably will stay that way since most of the heavy duty cutting, sanding, planning, flattening etc. is already done ;) But seriously saying, there is some kind of wild, old school pleasure to this. It's a good challenge. Thanks for the inspiration Ben! 🖖

The the reason it went better when you had it at a 45 degree angle is that the cutting part of the saw is nearer your hand, while the trailing edge is cutting less and being guided. A 90 degree cut means that the edge furthest from your hand can wander

  • @stratwackpj

    Ben, Ben ,Ben.
u need an oiler ,ie some rolled thick felt impregnated with light grade oil to rub the side of ur saw with which will make it glide much easier.
the oiler looks like a cinnamon roll, bound around outer circumference so it can't uncoil and let oil soak into it so u can just rub sides of saw when needed.
    old school tradie trick.
also helps to keep saw from ever rusting.
    happy sawing..

Oh Ben ...As I sit here watching you re-think all of your life choices (lol) I am soo happy this build is back. I've been really wanting to see your processes for this. I was worried that the Japanese saw would overheat and distort thus drifting off line. I know the Western rip saw is not as sexy, but it does a job. p.s. you need to talk to Andy Kline (who built Adam Savages work bench) and Matt Cremona (who supplied the lumber - and who built a guitar at your school a couple years ago) and get a really good bench!!! And one thing I'll tell you is that teflon fret dam material is GREAT for keeping it out of the slots. As long as it fits the slots real tight. Leave it sticking out of the ends of the fretboard, and you can pull it right through when everything is dry.

The Japanese saw is a Ryoba and the rip side is good for thinner pieces of wood. You might want to try a Kataba for extremely thick wood say 4"+. The rip variants come in roughly 5 tpi and the crosscut about 16 tpi.

Ben - don't worry about it - back in the day of hand tools for everything that is anything you , as the Master Luthier, would have a shop FULLof... MINIONS !!!
So consider that spinny thing with the buffy thing on it one of the crew from the main office madly rubbing away with pads and compound etc until presenting back to you for approval a finely polished neck with fret board - in this case he just happened to be bench top sized and his name is Stanley or Triton or whatever it is.
besides, after all that sawing and planing and a head full of CA fumes, you can be allowed the deviation from script....we want you to build after all, not collapse (unless that is a necessary step in some new technique your inventing...then....and only then....maybe)

The buffing wheel did nothing to move the construction forward. So it doesn't take away from the concept.

Sorry, Ben, I keep watching the realisation bit back and forth. It's just hilarious. :D

I can forgive a quick buff, going to have to do it again anyway, and especially after the cutting effort

Ben, when using a handsaw use the whole length of the blade and this will massively increase your cutting accuracy, and if your elbow is moving at the speed of a bee's wing you are doing it wrong.

This reminds me of last year when I had to rip a 3 inch thick, 1.6m long 400 ish mm wide elm slab into 4 parts, experiment with the saws while trying to stay straight, ended up buying a 3tpi giant rip from a local vintage seller. I also felt very very old and incredibly unfit hahaha.

Good advice about having the work area well ventilated and using masks when working with cyano adhesives. A good friend in the US died from the fumes in his workshop. I think the dangers of using cyanoacrylates need to be understood a lot more than they are currently.

I will count the buffing wheel as “finishing” not so much building….lol…doing a 95% no power tool build is still more than I’d be willing to do Ben…lol

I wouldnt worry about the bench grinder haha as funny as it was. Its only polishing 🤷‍♂️🤣🤣

I can't believe you broke the power tool rule to just buff up the fretboard. You could have used a bandsaw for one of those rip cuts and made it worth it 🤪

I think it would be cool to do a build with any tools that are $200 or less. So they are more accessable, but also more efficient

First. You're not out of shape. Anyone would be out of breath doing that much hand sawing. Second. I get it with the buffer. Falling back to the tried and true is a hard thing to shake. The thing I like about your show is that you show your mistakes and fix them in process.

Ben don’t worry about use the Bench Grind as a power tool because a Power Tool is Made by a Company to be use a A Grinder can’t help someone put Polish Wheels on a Grinder. So you are Safe. 🤣😅😂. Should Ben change the Lettering from inside to the Back So We Can See ALL THE LETTERS 👍🏻 Vote. Power of the People 🙏🍀

Oh, Ben, Ben, Ben, Ben, Ben... What are we going to do with you? (Watch more of your videos, I think)
For your next build, you need to start by removing all power tools from your shop. ;)
Today's lesson, however... There are times when every rule can be broken. Nice work with the superglue. I'm rebuilding a Gremlin bass for a friend, and I've been debating what to do about the frets. (A previous owner had wanted a fretless bass, and just yoinked them right out. :( ) Flooding with CA as a stabilizer just jumped to the top of the list of options.

If you want to avoid further risks of using power tools, move them in the new part of your shed and work in the old one for the rest of this build!
Btw. If you have to work with soft wood and want to stabilise it, you might want to look for _Cactus Juice._ It is a very thin resin (with the consistency of water) that cures in heat. You'll need also a vacuum-chamber to draw the air out of the wood, which is afterwards replaced by the resin. There are a couple of TH-camrs giving tutorials in how to use it.

If you use a power tool in the next episode, it becomes a tradition instead of a mistake.

Wears dust mask. Snorts line of dust directly off of wood plank. Awesome.

I felt knackered just watching you rip cutting by hand. I would have even let you off if you would have used band saw "by mistake "😂
