Never played the basic game, but got the SuperBattle version a few years back to play with my kids as well. Same positives and negatives you outlined as far as fun, quality, and immediate replayability. It does include building a structure that spreads out as well as up. It also has multiple figures that have to battle if they ever end up on the same level. If you liked the original it may be worth a look at. (I bought a second copy to double the size of the structures we build and have even used pieces from Animal on Animal to add extra players.
Thanks for posting. I went through a stage as a child of building tall playing card towers and shooting them down, probably lucky that Al Q weren’t recruiting. I share your ambivalence on Rhino Hero, in my collection but not called out often ( no kids ).
